Editorial Hello, hello to everyone in March! :-) The spring is slowly reaching us and awakening our nature from the winter sleep. It is time to use the spring energy and take a new challenge. Who are we? We are four EVS (European Voluntary Service) volunteers that now are living and working in Cluj-Napoca. We are from four different countries: Katharina from Austria, Hanna from Belarus, Janno from Estonia and Ieva from Latvia. We are working in the project Youth 4 community. Youth 4 community is a project of the “Support for Youth Development Association (S4YD). The association was founded on 17th of December 2009 in Cluj-Napoca, being an NGO entirely dedicated to youth development. The goal of our association is to stimulate and support the active, civic and responsible participation of the young generation within the social, educational, cultural and economic aspects of the communities they live in. This brochure is a tool that you can use searching for different opportunities that you can take in life. We believe that even though this brochure can’t hold all the possibilities that you can have; still, it can be a nice way how to start your journey to more active and meaningful life. At the end of the brochure you can find our contact details in case you have any suggestions or questions. We hope that the brochure will be useful for you! Have a great and active March! Yours: Hanna, Janno, Katharina and Ieva

Volunteer Of The Month On the pages of our brochure you will find quite often the opportunities to volunteer: for short-term or long-term projects, for an institution or an NGO. And we promise you, that this is going to be a really exciting experience in your life, whatever you’ll do. In our second brochure you again can find a volunteer of the month, a “superhero”, a person who just lives around and does amazing things. This March we will introduce you Theodore Somda, audio-visual and cinema engineer (film director), native from Burkina Faso, in charge of the cinema and audiovisual project at the French Institute in Cluj-Napoca, volunteer of the Francophonie (VIF).

<< p. 6
How did you find out about the francophonie volunteer opportunity, and why did you choose Cluj? I found about this opportunity on the Internet, through an exchange network. On that network I saw the call for the international volunteer program. Actually, I did not choose Cluj; I’d rather say Cluj chose me. The International Organization of La Francophonie launches every year its volunteer program on a 3-year period on specific positions, for the purposes of its partners or member organizations. Therefore, I have applied for one of the 55 positions available for 2012 and then I found out it’s going to be in Romania. Is this your first volunteer experience? Yes, this is my first volunteer experience. What was (or is) the biggest challenge for you in this project? The biggest challenge for me is, on one hand, bringing my experience in the field of cinema and audiovisual production at the French Institute in Cluj and, at personal level, making the most of this experience. 6
Volunteer Of The Month What is your motivation in doing volunteer work? The desire to share and discover – I’d say these are my motivations. Sharing on personal and professional level as well. Being confronted with an unknown environment and having purposes to achieve during my stay here in Cluj, these are the real motivations. In addition, knowing that these actions of mine help the Institute have more impact in its mission makes me happy. >> p. 8
7
<< p. 7
Do you think that every young person should try to volunteer in their life? Why? I definitely do. Being young and having the opportunity to put yourself in the service of a cause, community or organization – this, I think, is priceless. The place is not the most important, but the time and the impact that our actions, as volunteers, may have. We experience new things, meet new people, have doubts, know success and failure. But the sole purpose of all these is to refine and shape our personality and perception – of self and of the world. Any advice for people who want to try the OIF project? Hum! The best advice I can give is, that if you choose to get involved in this project, you must be ready to get out of your comfort zone, but staying assured that you will have achieved so much in the end. Being a volunteer means making a choice, means acting according to the mission that has been given to you and, in the end, improving yourself.

VIF: Another Volunteering Programme VIF it’s a volunteer program started in 2006 by the International Organization of la Francophonie (OIF), with the support of l’Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), l’Association Internationale des Maires Francophones (AIMF) and TV5 Monde. It offers young citizens, aged between 21 – 34 years, living in francophone countries the opportunity to: yy Engage themselves to use their competences and skills as involved in a 12-month project yy Live an international exchange experience in francophone countries, experience that will boost their resumes yy Contribute to the development of the francophone countries, especially those from South, Central and Eastern Europe Until now, 37 young people living in francophone countries have benefited from this experience, in the pilot project (2007-2009), as volunteers of the Francophonie. For the 2010-2013 period, 150 participants were selected.

It is a true masterpiece, a brilliant work of Croatian Renaissance literature in which the author presents Dubrovnik, its inhabitants and their lifestyle, in a humorous and ironic way. The plot is set in Rome, where Maro, a young man from Dubrovnik, is living and spending all his money on entertainment and easy living. Hearing about the wanton life Maro is leading in Rome, his father, Dundo Maroje, arrives hoping he can bring Maro to his senses and that his son will get back on track. The comedy Dundo Maroje is a fresco of one period of time and of a certain society. It is a world in which human virtues as well as faults are shown. Art & Culture Art What: theatre performance by Yasmina Reza When: 19 March, 19:00 Where: Cluj-Napoca National Theatre How much: 15 RON; 7,5 RON - for students and senior citizens. Description: Yasmina Reza was born in 1959 and has written five plays in ten years, all translated and widely performed in the world, but it is mainly known as the author of the play Art, staged in 1994 at Comédie des Champs Elysées (where it was sold out), then in Berlin and London. In Art we are confronted with an unusual situation (the purchase of a white painting, with white stripes) and a man trio – Marc, Serge, Yvan – three types of intellectuals of the end of the 20th Century, that insure the vivacity of the dialogue and the brilliance of the play. The doctrinaire aesthetical terrorism, but also the moral one, the cultivating of the absurd only for the sake of modern customs, the quasi-caricatured irony of the various psycho-artistic theories are all present in this dialogic space, a wonderful pretext for extrapolation. The play can be seen as a metaphor for the entire society from the end of the millennium. Contacts & Links: http://bit.ly/art_reza

Knitting Virus One of my greatest passions since I‘m 6 years old is knitting. Since then I managed to turn 1200 kilometers of yarn (just the distance from Minsk to Cluj) into warm and soulful items. There’s possibly nothing that I cannot knit. But, please, don‘t imagine me as a grandma in glasses and a rocking chair at once! One of the parts of our project is to make some creative workshops to share some knowledge with the local community. So, together with our partners from Incubator107@Cluj, we started spreading the old art of knitting, which seemed to start growing like a virus, combining it with the new ideas, like a trendy street art of yarnbombing in Cluj. The whole February, meeting on Thursday evenings I shared my knitting skills and techniques, we observed ourselves captivated by the Zen of knitting, and chattering and laughing a lot at the stories told by the participants.

Activities of Youth 4 Community I wish I could share with you the feeling of accomplishment I have after finishing knitting something, or the awesome feeling of being useful when you give the knitted object to a person you care about - but the only way for you to try this is to catch a knitting virus. And if you will need an advice how to live with it I‘m here for you! :-) Happy knitting!

Latvian Movie Night On 8th of February we organized a “white night” with three Latvian movies. That was a small get-together to get to know Latvian culture and language. The first movie was “Defenders of Riga”, released in 2007, the movie is based on a true story of Latvia’s struggle for independence. The next movie was “The fisherman’s son”. This movie was released in 1940 and during Soviet years it was hidden. It is about a young man Oskars who lives in a typical seaside village, but wants to break free of his father’s rule and the old ways – he dreams of new, large nets, an ice-cellar, and the fishermen’s independence from the fish wholesaler. The third movie was “The Passengers” released in 2010; and it is a movie that tells a one-day-story about a man, his wife, a young girl, a poet and a car driver who is supposed to take them around the city as long as they keep talking to each other.
48
Activities of Youth 4 Community The atmosphere was nice and homey. Unfortunately there was a small problem with English subtitles for the first movie, but after that everything worked very well. We heard a lot of positive feedback about the event and the chosen movies. It was great to hear that people enjoyed the movies; the opinions about the favourite movie out of those three were as different as the movies themselves.
