Editorial Welcome to the new opportunities brochure. At first we would like to introduce ourselves. We are four EVS (European Voluntary Service) volunteers that now are living and working in ClujNapoca. We are from four different countries: Katharina from Austria, Hanna from Belarus, Janno from Estonia and Ieva from Latvia. We are working in the project „Youth 4 community“. Youth 4 community is a project of the “Support for Youth Development” Association (S4YD). The association was founded on 17th of December 2009 in Cluj-Napoca, being an NGO entirely dedicated to youth development. The goal of our association is to stimulate and support the active, civic and responsible participation of the young generation within the social, educational, cultural and economic aspects of the communities they live in. We are making this brochure for you as a tool which you can use searching for different opportunities that you can take in your life. We believe that even though this brochure can’t hold all the possibilities that you can have, still it can be a nice way how to start your journey to a more active and meaningful life. At the end of the brochure you can find our contact details in case you have any suggestions or questions. We will be staying here till first of May, 2013 so you will definitely have a chance to meet with us in workshops, cultural events or just to hang out if you wish. We are here for you. Go through the pages and enjoy! Have a nice November!
3
On the pages of our brochure you will find quite often the opportunities to volunteer: for short-term or long-term projects, for an institution or an NGO. And we promise you, that this is going to be a really exciting experience in your life, whatever you’ll do. Every month we will introduce you a “superhero”, the Volunteer of the Month, the person who just lives around and does amazing things. This November we would like to tell you about Maria Turda, the volunteer from S4YD and a good friend of ours, who’s now, when you are reading these lines, is volunteering in Ghana, Africa. Read the small interview with her and find out how a girl from Săpânţa went all the way to Africa. >> p. 5
4
Volunteer Of The Month Do you remember your first volunteer experience? Why did you decide to participate? My first volunteer experience happened long time ago, I was still in primary school and we made a small project about cleaning the forest near our village and the environment. After that, many other experiences followed, as I can remember ( on community, environment, education, social problems). Despite these, I will recall my earliest childhood, my community and village. Living here, in Săpânţa is most of the time part of a volunteer activity. I say this because I realized that it is part of a daily routine to be a volunteer. Just a small example, if some neighbors do some agricultural work, immediately, without thinking, you go there and help them and suddenly there are 10 people gathered together for a small work. Like this everything happens, so I consider that the volunteer work for me comes as something natural. I don’t need to think a lot about it, to decide, it’s just something that I feel that must do and it comes naturally. In the same time, it gives me plenty of satisfaction and I‘m going deeper in the subject, I see myself as a human resource for the society.
Why did you decide to go to Africa? I decided to go to Africa a long time ago. I think I was around 6 or 7 years old when I first saw some documentaries or news about Africa, the poverty, hunger and the situation the people are facing there. Despite this, there is also the beautiful culture, nature and all that comes along with it. So I thought to myself: I definitely must go there and make something. That something is contributing my energy and knowledge to bring some >> p. 6 5
Volunteer Of The Month << p. 5 good changes to the people. After that, as I‘m studying social work and had many experiences worldwide, my dream about going to Africa was very touchable. Finally, I found this EVS project within Millennium Center Association, which came exactly on time. It was exactly on the topics I was interested in, so I applied and as a result, in November I’ll go to Ghana for 6 months. Of course some people asked me why don’t you stay in Romania and help people, we have our own Africa here. I was thinking about that, but I realized that I was involved also in our social problems and I knew the situation that my aims were higher. Also when I realized that we were 60 students who graduated social work with me, and I’m the only one who goes to Africa, I thought they can do here what I’m going to do in Africa.
Give advice for young people who want to volunteer but don‘t know how to start: The advice I want to give it’s the one I received also from some important people in my life. Everybody has a purpose in life, has something to give to the others, everybody has different qualities and talents as a result, we all know what we like to do most, what we are good at and where we can succeed. I can say that I invite young people to work and to be there for the others also and I invite them to be active because like this they don’t get old but they evolve. Just to discover what they want to do, what they want to give to the others, how they can do it and to find a proper place where they can do this (google is a big invention, as a start) =))) Good luck to all and kind regards! 6
EVS: Best Volunteering Programme What is EVS? Is it real for you? Let’s try to figure it out together. Just answer a few questions for yourself and see if it suits you. yy Are you aged between 16 and 30? yy Do you have some free time (2 weeks – 12 months) or just want to make a break between studies/work? yy Do want to discover a new country, language, people, culture and be useful for the local community? yy Are you open for new priceless experiences?
If your answers to all these questions are positive, you should do your EVS!
