ICON Recap

Hello Division 6! I am Elizabeth Wallace, the LTG for Division 17. I had the pleasure of attending the Key Club International Convention the first week of July. Going into the week, I did not know what to expect, as I had never been to ICON before. Little did I know it was going to be one of the best weeks of my life. From the first day, after we finally made it to the south pickup, the week was full of fun bus rides, museums, the metro, and of course meeting tons of new people. The Newseum is the coolest museum I have ever been to. From the Berlin Wall to the Pulitzer Prize Winning Photograph Exhibit, there is something for everyone. My personal favorite is a tie between the photograph exhibit and the sixth floor terrace with an amazing view of the Capital. Another standout was the Night Monument Tour we went on Tuesday night. If there is a perfect way to see the monuments, it is on this tour. Everything is so majestic at night and provides for the perfect photo taking opportunities. This was an outstanding way to spend our second night in D.C. Riding the metro can at first be a slightly terrifying experience. However, after you get lost once or twice and figure out what stop the hotel is, the metro is the greatest way to travel. It was the fastest way to get from point A to point B and became quite fun by the end. Once the convention started, meeting new people became the most common thing I did. From riding the elevator to sitting next to someone new in a workshop, there were unlimited opportunities to meet Key Clubbers from all over the country and even some from other countries. However, my absolute favorite part of the trip was sitting in the grass at the Lincoln Memorial watching the breathtaking fireworks display on the Fourth of July. Spending the Fourth of July in Washington D.C. is an experience everyone should have at least once in their life. I have never seen more wonderful fireworks. And of course the crazy, crowded metro ride with fellow NJ Key Clubbers is unforgettable. I cannot wait for next year’s convention in Anaheim, California. I hope to see all of you there, as I am sure it will be just as amazing if not more so than this year’s!

Youth Opportunity Fund

Michaela Patoilo The Youth Opportunities Fund, or YOF, is a fund set aside for Key Club International by Kiwanis International to provide grants for service projects. The idea behind the grants, which run from $100 to $2,000, is to help Key Clubs with a great service idea that requires a bit of funding. No project is too big or too small to apply for help from YOF. For instance, Jordan-Matthews High School Key Club from the Carolinas District used the aid received to buy copies of the book Love you Forever and taught first graders how to read the book. They then took the students to a local nursing home where the children, many of whom do not have grandparents, were able to “adopt a grandparent for the day and read to them. Other ideas that may require support by the YOF may include, building kennels for a local animal shelter and using the money to buy start up supplies, helping to repaint and restore an outdated recreation center, and using the grant to pay for transportation to an orphanage to donate supplies and time. The projects supported by the Youth Opportunities Fund can be pertaining to any need a club chooses to address in its home, school, or community. Be creative! Look around to see if there is a service opportunity waiting, it can be anywhere. The New Jersey District does not usually have a large number of applications for the grants, so take advantage of the opportunity! The committee generally chooses to fund clubs/club members who are requesting a portion of the total cost of the project or are working with other organizations to fund and complete the project. The deadline for applications is October 15, 2013 and more information about applying can be found at http://www.keyclub.org/service/fund/yof/yofgrant.aspx.
