Salford Museum and Art Gallery Design Proposal

Feature Wall made of Corian faceted panels, with areas to display Museum and Gallery Artefacts and Artwork.

Design Concept Salford Museum and art gallery is a historical building originally built around 1800. Since then it has been extensively developed over time. This design will modify the downstairs space even further, with the intention to create a new destination to attract a younger target audience. In addition to this, the design also aims to show a clear flow throughout the space with a clear definition as to the uses of each space.

To ensure flow through the building, the concept of biomimicry has been used to create a free-flowing form acting as a feature wall. This shape was created with multiples of the same diamond like shape. The concept of biomimicry is applied throughout the whole design as the form represents growth and mimics the division of cells, this process is called mitosis. The use of natural forms and symmetry is aesthetically pleasing to the brain and allows the users to take in the space with ease. Using nature as the inspiration also links to the surrounding Peel Park as a take on bringing nature into the building.

The design is also aimed to connect with a younger generation. This is done through digital aspects of the design. Such as, having a digital welcome screen which you can connect to via a smartphone, this will then be able to give you a guide as you are going through the building and will update you on new and upcoming events.

Furthermore, research states that for a design to relate to the younger generation the design must be clear, have a strong visual identity and represent the brand’s values. This design promotes the value of sustainability with the materials used. For example, the main design feature uses the material Corian, which is sustainable, durable and uses recycled and off-spec Corian in new products.
