WELCOME

Welcome at Hannoveraner Verband!

Dear horse enthusiasts, The history of the Hanoverian horse breed is long and inextricably linked with the foundation of the Celle State Stud almost 300 years ago. The Hannoveraner Verband is today one of the largest and most successful horse breeding associations of the world with activities in many different countries around the globe. Since 2015, the Hannoveraner Verband has also been running the studbook for Rhenish riding horses. Their rideability, work ethic, ambition and temperament are the reason for the outstanding successes of Hanoverian sports horses at national and international competitions, at Olympics, World and European Championships. But they are capable of so much more: They are everyday life companion in home stables, boarding enterprises or small former farms, pleasure partner or the second member of a team.

As they are reliable, intelligent and honest, they are at the same time beloved family member or comforter. Properties that are as important as extraordinary quality exhibited in breeding and sports. We are happy to welcome you in Verden, Alsfeld or Wickrath! Attend our many events, for example one of the nine auctions a year where so many happy riders have already found their perfect horse and be there right on the spot when Hanoverian and Rhenish horses are celebrated, delighting and fascinating people everywhere.

Top athlete and everyday companion

T

he most fascinating thing about equestrian sports and horse breeding is the unique interaction between human and animal. Top sports performances, heart-warming experiences outdoor and joyful times spent in the stable are only possible if both partners trust each other.

these qualities, there wouldn’t be as many outstanding sports successes all over the globe, there wouldn’t be as many riders relying on Hanoverian horses and there wouldn’t be thousands of breeders looking forward to the birth of their foals every year.

It is more than just super jumping capabilities, impressive stamina or extraordinary dressage talent. Ambition, intelligence and willingness, but also caution, obedience and respect are properties that turn horses into a true sports partner and loyal companion in people’s life.

The sensational results of Hanoverian horses at Olympic Games, World and European Championships in all three disciplines are beyond compare. They have become possible only due to the consequent selection for riding horse qualities, tracing back to the Olympics in 1928. No other breed has achieved such fantastic results. But even more important than sports successes is the fact that many Hanoverian

horses are loyal companions in people’s everyday life. Their rideability and their amazing character turn them into perfect pleasure time partners. It is no coincidence that since 2015, the premises of the Hannoveraner Verband are fixed venue for the German National Pleasure Horse Championships. The Championships, launched by the German Equestrian Federation (FN), were already held in Verden several times: In 2012 the five-year-old Hanoverian Diordano was decorated with the winner’s sash as best young German pleasure horse. Faustus the Legend, bred in Hessen, won this title in 2013 and in 2015, the Hanoverian mare Gaudera won the golden ribbon.

anover‘s mares are the basis of success. The dam lines are known for their performance capacities and their sound hereditary background. The information system “Hanoverian Dam Lines” is a valuable tool for breeders when it comes to breeding plans. But Hanover’s mares fascinate even more in real life than in theory. Shop window of the breed are the annual mares shows, organized and hosted by the horse breeders’ clubs. The Friedrich-Jahncke-Show is held every second year at the regional level. The Herwart von der Decken-Show, the central Hanoverian mare show, is one of the most impor-

Particularly selected mares from Rhineland are also taking part in the show. The family division is held every five years, the last time in 2013. Similar to the male counterpart, the Hannoveraner Verband honours the „Hanoverian Mare of the Year“ once a year to highlight their special importance for breeding: The mares are the basis for sports and breeding successes, and their value is hard to top. There are always outstanding mares

that, bred to different stallions, regularly produce outstanding progeny in their breeding career. Their offspring delight at the different show grounds all over the globe or pass their genetic values on to their progeny. Famm, Luna, April Sun, Cecile, Wanda, Sammy Joe, Ria Grande and La Belle are the names of the past awardees that presented top athletes such as the World Cup winner Shutterfly, Olympic Champion Salinero, the full brothers Satisfaction I and II, shooting star Embassy II or Damsey FRH.

Grande-Prize

ZUCHT

The Grande-Prize was launched in 2009 and is dedicated to stallions aged around 10. This is an important time for a stallion, because at this age, the first secured information about his hereditary qualities is available. This prize is linked with the hope that the honoured stallion will considerably influence the Hanoverian breed as did the eponym of the prize.

Outstanding sires

T

he consequently applied selection methods are the reason and basis for the remarkable position of the Hanoverian horse at the national and international level.

Stallion licensing and stallion performance test Before the young Hanoverian and Rhenish stallions start their breeding careers, they have to be presented at the stallion licensing in Verden and comply with the performance requirements as are stipulated in the statutes. Breeding highlight of the year is the stallion licensing and stallion sales in October. Some hundred stallions show up in front of the licensing commission during the selection trip four to six weeks before – only the best ones are allowed to participate at the important final. Highest require-

ments when it comes to quality of movement, conformation, free jumping and health status have to be met to be accepted for breeding purposes. The most impressive youngsters of each age-group are honoured with an award. This selection may seem to be quite difficult and strict to many a one. But only these strict measures have turned the Hanoverian horse into what it is today: a horse breed of worldwide importance. A fact that has long since been known among experts: Not only the careers of Olympic horses such as Desperados FRH and Codex One started in Verden. Federal, World and European Champions were also already discovered at the stallion sales.

Stallion of the Year Each year, one particularly outstanding sire is nominated „Hanoverian Stallion of the Year“. The list of popular stallions of the past years is an accumulation of extraordinary stallions of the Hanoverian breed. They are all not only known for their outstanding own accomplishments, but also for the brilliant genetic properties they passed on to their progeny in breeding and sports. Weltmeyer, For Pleasure, Lauries Crusador xx, De Niro or Goldfever are representatives of this unique squad of stallions.

lympic Champions, World Champions, World Cup winners, European or German Champions – Hanoverian horses won all these important titles. Draufgänger was the first Hanoverian in history to win one of these titles with Carl-Friedrich Freiherr von Langen: The Aldech/Nordgraf-son and his rider were the celebrated winners of the individual and team dressage gold medal at the 1928 Olympic Equestrian Games. It was the first gold medal for Germany ever achieved at Olympic Games until then. And a number of athletes in dressage, show jumping and eventing continued the successful series Draufgänger had started. Their brilliant performances were honoured with 48

gold medals in total from 1928 to 2012 – no other breed celebrated such an impressive amount of medals. And there have been again and again these special duos that shine all over the world: Gigolo FRH and Isabell Werth, for example. Gigolo FRH is the most successful horse in contemporary competition history with four Olympic gold and two silver medals, four World Championship-titles, eight victories at European and four victories at German Championships. Outstanding performances and brilliant hereditary qualities go hand in hand in Hanover. Many sires have achieved fantastic own accomplishments and pass on their outstanding qualities to their progeny. Privately owned stallion De Niro is such an

exceptional stallion who has been at the top of the world rankings WBFSH for many years: The Donnerhall/Akzent II-son already won Grand Prix-tests at the age of seven, only shortly after tests at the German Championships for professional riders and at the Hamburg Dressage Derby. The overall quality of his sons and daughters is hard to top: Desperados FRH is the best-known of them. The noble and shiny stallion has been earning successes in a row in the past years. He had won the team silver medal at the 2012 Olympics in London with Kristina Bröring-Sprehe, one year later in Herning the team gold medal at the European Championships, the duo was honoured with the team gold and individual bronze medal at the 2014 World Equestrian Games in France and with team bronze and individual silver at the 2015 European Campionships in Aachen. Dablino FRH and Anabel Balkenhol, D’Agostino FRH and Fabienne Lütkemeier, Donnerfee with Diane Creech, Delgado and Beatriz Ferrer-Salat or Devon L with Claudia Fassaert are all sports horses made by De Niro. These successful combinations fill the slogan „Hanoverians – Success all over the World“ with life and spread the breed’s brilliant reputation all around the globe.

ot many stallions succeed in both, successful and exemplary own sports careers and outstanding progeny in breeding. There are a number of these breeding jewels in the Hanoverian breeding area such as For Pleasure by Furioso II/Grannus. He had become team Olympic Champion with Lars Nieberg and Marcus Ehning in 1996 and 2000 and team European Champion in 1997 and 1999. Many victories in outstanding Grand Prix-events complement his successful balance. Today, he is the best Hanoverian stallion at the top of the jumper sire list of the umbrella organization WBFSH of worldwide breeding organizations. He passed on his genetic qualities to successful horses such as Forsyth, For Feeling, Fit For Fun, For Joy or Fine Lady.

Stakkato is already a legend in his lifetime – he has influenced the Hanoverian show jumping breed like hardly any other stallion. The bay had already become Federal Champion in Warendorf in 1998 and had developed into an all-rounder. He had dominated the German Championships and Nations Cup-events with Eva Bitter, and his offspring are also top-notch performers over the fences. Ukato and Willem Greve, Souvenir and Philipp Weishaupt and Sambucca with Eva Bitter were and are the best. State premium mare Sensation produced the Celle state stud stallion Perigueux and Stakkato’s Deern the licensed Canstakko. His son Sandokan was nominated five-year-old

Champion in Warendorf in 2013 – also with Eva Bitter in the saddle. Codex One is one of Hanover’s most popular advertising mediums. The dark-brown by Contendro has perfectly started his career: First shown at the Federal Championships and World Breeding Jumper Championships for Young Horses, he then continued to successfully compete at the advanced level. Today, he is one of the most successful German jumpers with Christian Ahlmann. The duo won the Aachen Grand Prix in 2014 and finished fourth with the German team at the World Championships in France.

venting is a very demanding discipline. A couple of years ago, stamina was almost the only required property, but much more has become necessary today: Dressage is performed at a more advanced level, show jumping requires technique and potential – time, speed, courage and ambition are the main features in the cross-country course. Hans Melzer, national coach of the German event riders, describes it as follows: “Modern event horses have a refined conformation, with the desired thoroughbred influence to be found further down in their pedigree. This is exactly the advantage of the Hanoverian horse that – in addition – also contains outstanding dressage and show jumping genes.” Therefore, it is no coincidence that not only German event riders completely rely on the brand Hanover – there is hardly any other discipline for which all these features are that important.

German top event rider Ingrid Klimke celebrated impressive successes with her Hanoverian horses: She had been dominating the competitions with FRH Butts Abraxxas for years, both cantered to two Olympic team gold medals, became team European and German Champions. Today, the 18-year-old is the schoolmaster horse of Ingrid Klimke’s daughter Greta – best proof for the outstanding character of these top athletes. She won the team gold and individual silver medal with FRH Escada JS at the 2014 World Championships in France. FRH Escada JS is ten years old and was one of the youngest horses at the Championships. Andreas Dibowski also found his perfect Hanoverian partner: He became Olympic Champion in Hong Kong in 2008 with Butts Leon, with FRH Fantasia and FRH Butts Avedon team European Champion in Luhmühlen and Malmö in

Many careers start at the Federal Championships in Warendorf where Andreas Dibowski has already been at the top many times: His Corrida by Contendro was nominated Federal Champion of five-year-olds in 2014. Contendro had already presented the Federal Champions in previous years. Chipmunk FRH and Julia Krajewski won the gold medal in 2013, Corona and Sandra Auffarth in 2012.

FRH – an abbreviation that stands for “Supporters’ Club for Hanoverian Sports Horses”. Since its foundation in 1985, the supporters’ club has been focusing on connecting young, talented horses and successful riders to path the way for the later world-class horses into the advanced sports level. Highly gifted Hanoverian horses are supported in the early or later stages of their career, they are maintained for the advanced sports level in Germany or particularly acquired. The support of successful horse-rider-combinations by the FRH is possible due to its excellent contacts to approved trainers and instructors.

The list of horses with the name suffix FRH that shined at the international level worldwide is long – three examples: Charlott-Maria Schürmann and Burlington FRH are a young duo. The two were the surprising winners of the Final of the 2012 Nuremberg Cup in Frankfurt only shortly after they had won the team gold medal and two individual silver medals at the European Championships for Young Riders. here is excitement in the air, and this excitement is reflected on visitors’ faces all over the stands: Their eyes follow the auctioneer, the bidders and the horse that is trotting relaxed rounds in the auction ring of the Niedersachsenhalle, not knowing that it is the main actor of a thrilling show. And then: The gavel falls! The horse is sold, the new owners are happy, the audience applauds. Scenes like this one happen almost every month in Verden. Each auction has its own and special dynamic, each auction is different, but the basics are always the same. Visionary Hans Joachim Köhler launched the Verden auctions more than 60 years ago in 1949 in order to support Hanoverian breeders in selling their horses. And this is still

their aim and purpose today. And of course a question of offering the perfect horse for riders and breeders. To meet the different demands of customers is the engine that drives the staff of the Training and Sales Centre. The formerly developed system is still valid today. There have of course been amendments and improvements, but the basics did not change: The Verden auction site has since then been well-known for its smooth and careful selection of the auction candidates and high requirements when it comes to quality, rideability, health and an appropriate training period in Verden before the horses are put up for auction – and this is what has caused its worldwide reputation.

The Verden auction year reads as follows: The Verden auction in January is the first auction of the year, followed by the auctions in March, May and July. Early born foals complement the offer in March, May and July there is an additional Elite auction for broodmares and foals in August. Autumn highlights are the Elite auction of riding horses and foals and the stallion sales in October, followed by the Verden November Auction and the Alsfelder Advent at the Horse Centre in Alsfeld/Hesse.

MARKETING

Where dream partners meet

T

o sell the horse for the exhibitor at the best price possible – and to perfectly fulfill the wishes of customers from Germany and abroad: These are the tasks of the whole team around auction manager Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener. Versatility is the most important property of the auction venue Verden. The old auction system was modified in 2015 to offer a huge range of customers the perfect horse for the different demands. The collections of all six riding horse auctions are complemented by elite horses, increasing the interest in the auction collection even more with all horses of the collection being in the focus of public interest for a couple of weeks.

20

Auction

Customers who travel to Verden before the auction benefit from the fact that there will be a huge number of preselected horses, checked by the vet, available for test riding purposes. The customer advisors of the Hannoveraner Verband, but also riders and grooms are important contact persons and always focused on informing potential customers as detailed as possible about behaviour, rideability, most important strengths and weaknesses of the individual horses. But the auction service includes even more. Horses that are meant to be sold at an auction can be trained by the

auction team before the auction. And customers who have purchased their desired horse during the auction can leave it with the auction premises for further training purposes – competitions, shows and performance tests inclusive. “It is our aim to bring the perfect partners together. There are horses of all levels, disciplines and areas to match the demands of ambitious pleasure time riders up to internationally successful top athletes,” summarizes Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener.

Prime Example Lothar Grabe purchased Chacco Grande FRH by Chacco-Blue/Graf Top at the Elite Auction in April 2013 with the assistance of the Supporters’ Club. His new owner decided to leave the talented chestnut stallion in Verden for future training purposes: Enrico Süßenbach has meanwhile placed the athlete in jumper riding horse classes up to medium level. The duo also participated at the World Breeding Show Jumping Championships for Young Hores in Lanaken (BEL).

There are also horse breeders’ clubs in Denmark, Italy, Finland, France, western and eastern Canada, Russia, Sweden and South Africa. Customers from abroad who purchase a horse in Verden also benefit from the after-sale support. Meanwhile, the Hannoveraner Verband offers courses and advanced training in seven different countries, among them China, Russia and Finland. Besides, regular inspection trips are organized in almost 30 different countries to asses, register and Hanoverian mares and foals. A “Breed Orientation Course” is held once a year in Verden

for English-speaking breeders and friends from all over the world. The participants have the unique opportunity to experience the Hanoverian horse very closely. The autumn course includes the stallion licensing as a highlight. Theoretical knowledge is complemented by reports about the Hanoverian breed and bloodlines. Unique pilot project The first Hanoverian auction in Iran was held in December 2014. The premiere – organized by the Hannoveraner Verband in co-operation with a committed partner – was a great success. Ali Hojabr, the official representative of the Hannoveraner Verband in Iran, hosted the auction at his spacious equestrian

facilities. Such an event had never been held before in this country. The Hanoverian auction system also proved to be suitable in the faraway country. Young futurity prospects were specifically purchased at auctions before and then presented by the Verden auction team. Well-known training and show stables from all over the country purchased the young athletes. Because of this successful debut, Hanoverian sales events will continue to take place in Iran.

Highlight of the annual schedule is the International Dressage and Show Jumping Festival in August. The international horse show with its worldwide reputation has been attracting top international athletes for years. The reasons are as versatile as the program itself: The Hanoverian Riding and Show Jumping Championships, international dressage tests and jumper classes, qualifier for the Nuremberg Cup and Piaff Challenge Cup – all these elements are the most important features of the horse show in the heart of Lower Saxony. And just to top it: An exciting show evening and the huge exhibition Verden Country Days are approved components that turn the horse show into something very special. A visit that pays off!

The seminars of the Hannoveraner Verband are held in co-operation with Schade & Partner Fachberatung für Pferdebetriebe (Verden) and Pferdesportverband Hannover. Once a year, the Hannoveraner Verband also invites for an „Open Day“. Interested people and visitors are welcome to walk through the stables, the Auction Manager explains what has to be considered when selecting auction horses, vet and farrier present their work and many other activities related to the horse provide insight into the work of the Hannoveraner Verband.

t is impossible to imagine equestrian events in Verden and all over Germany without them: the Hanoverian young breeders. They perfectly showcase the horses, guarantee perfect whip guidance, support the breeders in preparing their horses and are the perfect assistants behind the scenes. The work of the young breeders has long since been fixed and approved part of the Hannoveraner Verband. The youth speaker of the Hannoveraner Verband is member of the board which ensures that the interests of the young breeders are represented at the highest level, a special membership with the Hannoveraner Verband for the young breeders is self-evident. What characterizes the work of the young breeders in particular is their love and passion for horses and horse breeding –

joint studies and experiences. There is a broad range of topics in the focus of the young breeders’ work: feeding and equine husbandry, breeding and history, evaluation of conformation, basic gaits and free jumping, health, preparatory training and presentation in hand. Children and young people aged eight to 25 are allowed to participate. There are contact persons with all horse breeders’ clubs and regional breeding associations who are responsible for the work of the young breeders. Advanced training and competitions in theory and practice at all levels and far beyond the area of the Hannoveraner Verband – up to World Championships – are fixed part of the work of the young breeders. And it is not only a question of know how: The responsibility

and identification with the Hanoverian horse, maintaining tradition and knowledge are important values that are passed on to the younger generation. Rejuvenating the Verband’s structures and the training and support of qualified young executives is as important. The gates of the Hannoveraner Verband are always open to the young people: The Hanoverian Young Breeders’ Day is held once a year – a cheerful meeting of Hanoverian young breeders from all horse breeders’ clubs and regional breeding associations for a performance comparison.

Following an 18-months lasting co-operation, the vast majority of delegates and members of both associations agreed on the fusion of the two horse breeding associations, bringing the forward-looking plan to life. As they know: A co-operation is the best opportunity to successfully face the structural changes in the German horse breed and to maintain a strong market position. Developing future structures is a comprehensive task: New perspectives were created for breeders and members when it comes to selection strategies, co-operation of the breeding associations and marketing purposes.
