The Secret Garden Bookworm Gardens Sehboygan, WI, USA Exp. December 2012
Children’s books are brought to life in Bookworm Gardens. The non-profit community project has come to life after years of fundraising and donated time. Next to the main Hansel + Gretel themed administration building is a 1000 ft2 space that I have transformed into ‘The Secret Garden’ based on the original novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. As the book describes, a ruined brick wall covered in ivy will be guarded at main entrances by a massive wooden door and trees growing over the wall near each entrance hint to the blooming garden inside. The ruin walls will undulate in height to provide vistas across the nearby ravine and into a stream that runs next to the main entrance. Inside, two removable shelters and iron tables can be set up for meetings and weddings with planters flanking a main gathering space. The proposed stage in the eastern corner will be decorated similar to the German-style timber frame gable ends of the administration building and an interactive kitchen area will be set up in the north corner of the site for cooking demonstrations. All rainwater that doesn’t drain through the pervious brick pavers throughout the site will be released into a rain garden at the rear of the stage.
