Now that you have created a concept idea through research, writing and image, the time has come to start to develop your design. Allow for your ideas to change and grow as you go along, because visualisations and realisation will bring new information that will influence the design process and enhance the function and experience of your project. how you plan your visitor’s flow throughout the event. Make sure there is a minimum of 900mm of pathway through the space to allow safe access. Include an alternative route for disable access. May your space not be assessable by wheelchair, or in case an elevator or ramps are not available, show how you could offer a similar experience for disabled. e.g. install webcams into the rooms that are not assessable so disabled can be a witness on a lower level.

Inventory: what will you need to include in your design

1. Drawings:

Produce a set of the relevant plans and at least one section in scale 1:20 or 1:50 of ALL the spaces where your exhibition/event will take place This will include entrances, exits, stairways, elevators as well as exterior plans (if applicable)

2. Visitor flow:

in your plan and section, that will support your event such as furniture, lighting rigs, display cases, projectors etc. (In case your project is virtual (app) indicate the locations of the different interactions in your setup. Format options: Autocad, Vectorworks, Indesign, Photoshop, Powerpoint or Hand drawings in presentable state.

3. Design Elements:

Demonstrate clearly in markings (e.g. arrows and/or dotted lines)

List and Indicate all the features that you need to design or curate

The original floor plan is done in scale 1:100 featuring the site of exhibition which is the balcony done in adobe illustrator (room is measured by using mesuring tape) Feedback: Put in visitor flow and the design element in the map, add sections drawing and visitor flow as well. (original feedback drawing can be viewed on attachment page at the end of journal)

Floor plan & Visitor Flow The visitor flow will be in U shape, as the balcony is dead-end exhibition site, to at the end the visitor has to walk back from the way they come in. in order to reach the exhibition site, visitor need to visit others exhibition on lower level first. The exhibition will be located in merchiston tower 3rd floor. which is building in medieval set up, henceforth its not accessible by disable person (no elevator and stiff staircase).

Proposed Design Elements As the design element that is proposed are as following:

1. String art installation:

The form of the installation will be in shape of flow (design is choose after the feedback of tree design is too literal, installation could be in more imaginative shape), thats why flow is choosen, as its tell the story of flow, migration, heritage, and like link between generation with flow as well.

2. The reader:

Instead of using mobile or tablet, reader will be design in functional shape where some level of engagement will be featured (to be considered still) Figure: Moodboard of colourscheme that is trying to archived

3. Ambient effect:

The room will be create in blue scheme colour ambient

4. Typography design

Some typography element will be design as well to work along with the whole exhibition (to create the sense of uniformised design)

Concept design: what could it look like? Now that you have created an inventory of what you need to design for your project, this weeks task is to visualise all the design elements that are involved, such as furniture, display cases, artworks, artifacts installations, light design, app design etc. Based on the ideas that you have developed already, concentrate on what your elements would look like, what their dimensions will be, what materials they will be made of and what textures and colours are involved. Also consider how they might be actually constructed. In this phase you can discover what is unique and personal about your design and which of elements you want to stand out, so that by next week you can start finalising your design.

1. Mood board appropriate for your design Demonstrate research of proposed materials, construction detail/requirement, lighting, ambience, sounds, smell, tactile experience etc

2. Sketches

Produce 3d rendered concept sketches of the main design elements, which will feature in your Exhibition/Event. Show its sizes, structure, colour and what material it would be made of.

Floor plan After the feedback, floor plan is remade in autocad, with all the line drawing and proper scale 1:100, site analysis is also been added. Feedback Change the colour into black define the thickness of the line: thicker line for wall

3. Space

Produce 3d rendered concept sketches of the space(s) which features your exhibition design (this can also be virtual design for apps) Format: free of choice (hand drawings, SketchUp, Photoshop etc)

Floor plan 2 models of floor plan are made: 1. the whole 3rd floor plan in scale 1:100 2. the exhibition space floor plan in scale 1:50 both are drawn in Autocad with precise measurement

Moodboard In order to get better understanding of the design, moodboard of material, design concepts, and design element is being expand. Resulting in choosen material and etc. 1. Material : Wool string (for installation) 2. Ligthing: Warm spot light for reader, and blue EL wire for the installation, room will also be illumiated in blue light scheme

3d Rendered skecthes & space Rendered space:

In order to fulfil the task of creating the 3d rendered image, the room is created in cinema 4d (due to my lack understanding of using skecth up, i decided to work on cinema 4d (which provide me with more tutorial online as well as more detail and realistic artwork.

The first thing that i do is to create some shape and remodeled it )with boole and other tool in cinema 4d to create the design of space (based on 1:1 scale), and to create some realistic feeling some material is choosen Design Element Progess: During this tutorial as well, I have decided to work on the reader, the reader will be in tube material and you can pull some element

out , and from there you can read the story of certain Napier, then after you finish reading it, the reader will roll up itself. The mechanism of the roller will follow the mechanism of measuring tapes.

Cinema 4d Tutorial after deciding that i will work on cinema 4d so i talk to my motion graphic lecturer Iain, and he recommended me some website where they give tutorial for free to newbie (very basic and easy to understand)

Final design: what will it look like? Now that you have completed the concept of all design elements, the time has come to finalise your design. Based on your ideas, communicate clearly and visually what your design elements will look like; what their dimensions, materials, textures and colours are, and how they are going to be constructed. Please note that from here onwards, any change of your design will have an effect on your drawings, renders models and posters and can cause delays, so manage your time wisely.

1. Sketches Produce 3d rendered sketches of the main design elements which will feature in your Exhibition/ Event. Show its sizes, structure, colour and what material it would be made of. 2. Space Produce 3d rendered concept sketches of the space(s) featuring your exhibition design (this can also be virtual design for apps or light) 3. Create a (sketch) model 1:100 or 1:50 of the main space of your exhibition design (If your proposal is virtual, you can produce a computer model)

Figure: Floor plan done in original scale 1:100 (images are not in actual scale)

Applying Material given the task to give more realistic view of the space, material and basic lighting is applied on the model, basically all the material texture that is choose is based on the material that visually similar with the one that existed in the merchiston tower, the string ambient element is also installed in the space (even though it doesnt look sleak at all). material also applied on the stairway. after finished with applying the material some light is put on (white light to give effect of shadow and lighting.

Material Image on the right show the detail of material that is used in the site, some wood and plain white wall, scaffholding element is also use to put some new wall on existing wall so that it wont ruin the wall of the tower. and as well you can see the reader thing where people can pull in and pull out the reading material. even in picture the string ambient is not obvious, during the exhibition itself the string will fill all the surrounding.

Napier Tartan Typeface In order to give similar visual to all the design element, I decided to work on some typeface design. eventhough its not a real font, its good enough to be use in all the display of my design. the inspiration of the design is coming from the idea of string art, the purpose of the typeface is for display, hence its not readable as body text. (only work as title and subtitle)

Typeface design The design basically very simple, I decided to work on old newspaper type, then I traced out the outine and draw some random riddle as the back ground by using pencil tool, then I created outline for the pencil stroke (to make sure the size doesnt change when I need to expand the text in the future) The outline then is put on the bg layer and by using clipping mask a new whole look of old newspaper typeface is created.

Reader & Linograph

Linographic look for the design In order to keep the uniformised look, the design of the image in the reader and the articles is keep in linographic outlook, the reason behind it because linograph produce old school look and as well keeping the colour very simple (one colour design) and the style of the drawing is also a match for the whole string ambient look.

after you get the reference image that you want to work on, you will need to trace it outline by using illustrator. The next step will be detailed line drawing by using brush tool in photoshop, ideally the stroke will be in detail giving the feel of the texture of clothing and even hair element

Last step is to put some texture on the top and make it overlay, so the images will have more texturised feel. and arrange them nicely in photoshop before exporting it as JPEG or PNG for furtherwork. final look can be viewed on the site below.

Referencing the image After pick up the story to work on, then the next step is to choose reference image, for example the one that I show here is about the 3 brothers of Napier family that is participating in great exploration, so I decided to work on images of “the three musketeers

Linographic look for the design In order to keep the uniformised look, the design of the image in the reader and the articles is keep in linographic outlook, the reason behind it because linograph produce old school look and as well keeping the colour very simple (one colour design) and the style of the drawing is also a match for the whole string ambient look.

Feedback for the design The design of art work with text on top and image on the bottom keep everything hanging. the text on the top giving feeling of the cloud. and it will cause confusing when reader see the image before text as well so it might likely be better if the image is on the top and text on the bottom (working with the density)

Reader Roller The idea of the roller as replacement of tablet as media will trigger more curiosty and engagement, the design itself is morelike fushion between threadroll and measuring tapes Material: Handle: wooden block Reader: Plastic that being wrapped by cloth (white) and some embrodied outline images will be place on the top

Now that you have completed the final design elements you can start a 3D visualization in the form of a model of the major space(s) of your design. Use the appropriate scale for your project. Does your design zoom in on details or is it a larger scheme? One or two rooms would be modeled at a larger scale than a model of the Merchiston Tower in the courtyard. Remember, you want the model to communicate your idea in the best possible way. Take advantage of the fact that a model can do more than a 2D image such as: looking inside the space; experimenting with lighting; experiencing the design through a scaled people point of view; photographing a 3D space. Please note that as you are not realizing your project 1:1 (with some exceptions), the scaled model is the closest you ever get to physically build your exhibition, and that materialising it into a model is part of the design process.

Napier Tartan Typeface After trying to fit in the string typeface design I stranggle upon a messy look, so then some adjustment is done for the typeface. Two new typefaces is introduce The edgy Napier and wavy napier the edgy napier design is basically tidier version of previous typeface that I work on, while wavy Napier is slightly modified version of existing font called Abys

Napier Tartan Typeface first of all the based typeface that I work on is Code Bold (as its bold and strong to make impact) after selecting the typeface, then I created outline of it, and distort it in the way that I wnted it to be (make sure its still look bold) then start using pen tool to draw on the top layer (just basic line in kinda string art kind of way). and create outline of each letter after, to make sure the spacing between the text doesnt go wrong after being expanded

Wall installation: String Art

Model Building The model is built on white card board with scale of 1:20. the model itself is site model of where my exhibition will take place (the 3rd floor balcony) the room is basically in L shape, one side of the room is for the main installation and the other side its about half of the main size, on the wall itself will be installed the wall string art which outline as shown above, then lighting trial also being imposed in the model.

POSTER DESIGN This is the week to design the layout of your two posters, to place all the content you have so far and reserve space for the elements/visuals you are still working on. Consider that you have already have done a lot of the work; so laying it out will help to see where the gaps are. Consider fonts, font sizes and a graphic style that represents the ambience of your exhibition. Leave out any information that is not relevant to the visitor, however, please do include it in your sketchbook, showing the process. Don’t spent unnecessary time on elements that will not be included in your posters or that will give the same information twice. Format is free, ( Indesign, photoshop, Illustrator, Etc) Beware of the resolution (300 dpi) of your posters and font size as A1 is a large size. Advised to make a test print in A2 (black and white)

Figure: Poster design: Explanation of the project, element of designs and sites (printed in 4 a3)

A1 poster The main poster is designed in A1 side and work as promotional and invitation poster at the same time, the design element will be featuring the element of flow and the weaving of thread as well as the element that showing the notion of flow. colour that picked are colour that representing colour of napier tartan. and on the heart of the poster the napier tartan is place to show the union of napier families.

Realistic room ligthing To make the 3d rendered sketches look even more realistic, lights are installed based on the experiment that has been carried on the scale model of the room.

Detail Design For the last task you need to produce a detail of one of the elements that you designed and is authentically yours. The purpose of this exercise is to explain to a carpenter, builder or engineer, how you envisage your design in a so called ‘shop drawing’. You do not need to be a wood worker or engineer in designing an exhibition, however, you might need to collaborate with one. This detail needs communicate what you propose what your design will look like, so that the crafts man can find a technical solution to make this happen. Consider materials, such as wood, metal, glass, mix etc. Consider junctions, shadow gaps, colours and textures. Propose a way your detail is fixed together (skrewed, glued, welded etc.) Keep the detail very simple, and zoom into one (interesting) corner or junction where materials come together.

Detail installation is done in scale 1:2, the illustration is done on white board, painted using acrylic and then its nailed and then lit up by using EL wire.
