Introducing SIZE:me. This independent pattern company produces dressmaking patterns for home sewists, but with a little difference! We chat to Donna about her aim to help sewers get the most from her SIZE:me sewing patterns

Tell us a little about yourself and SIZE:me?

The business name was the most difficult to come up with but it’s a play on sizing labels in shop bought items. When we make clothing for ourselves the size is size ‘me’ not small, medium or large!

Until very recently I was based in Bradford, West Yorkshire but have made a big move across the Channel to France! This has enabled me to get back into teaching and hosting French Sewing Retreats in the summertime, something I’m very excited about. It was my teaching that inspired me to become a pattern designer. Years of seeing how people struggled with instructions made me determined to produce accessible patterns for all levels.

In a previous career I was an engineer and when it came to designing, the two careers came together. When lockdown hit my teaching business I took the time and opportunity to start working on the designs and have never looked back.

What types of garments does your collection include so far?

The collection so far includes nine easy-to-wear and make wardrobe staples, which transcend seasons. I have a very simple boxy tee, two skirts, two blouses, dress, jacket, coat and the most dramatic wide-legged trousers.

What resources do you supply sewers when they decide to make one of your patterns?

Ok so this is my biggest passion! Every sewing pattern has a free to access YouTube tutorial that goes through each and every step, this combined with my very descriptive written instructions regularly sees feedback saying that the patterns are like a mini sewing class! This is the biggest compliment and my greatest achievement so far.

How do you decide what patterns to add to your range and do you have a favourite so far?

Usually it’s very simple – it’s something I want to wear! This makes it difficult to choose a favourite so let’s go with the pattern that I have made the most variations of and that has to be the Vienne Dress as it’s so hackable.

This year, I’m trying to be more focused and look for gaps in my collection that need to be filled and not just be selfish and please myself!

What would you say is the biggest problem that faces sewers who sew at home?

I have taught dressmaking for the past decade and have seen first hand, how people struggle with pattern instructions. This, along with finding time, I believe is the biggest problem home sewers face.

Knowing this inspired me to design my patterns with instructions that are truly written with a beginner in mind – no assumptions, no gaps and packed full of helpful hints and tips. I’m also with the sewer every step of the way with a free YouTube tutorial to stitch along to so they don’t feel alone and can begin to build confidence in their abilities.

Do you have any new patterns in the pipeline?

I have very recently been working on a new block to increase my size range and promised not to release any new patterns until this was completed!

Thankfully the tests are in my inbox to be assessed as I write, so fingers crossed I can get started on the new designs very soon!

I have a few in the pipeline including a shirt, a dress and a jumpsuit. They will be added to the Serene Collection as they’re all based on comfort, I’m very excited about these!

MAKING THE Alston Jacket from Sew To Grow!

With spring weather around the corner (we hope!), it seemed a perfect time to make a lighter but still warm jacket that is super quick to make. I made the Alston Jacket from Sew to Grow, which can be made as either a lined, reversible jacket or as I have made it, in a single layer.

My fabric choice

I have made mine with Modelo Boiled Wool in the mauve colourway, which felt like a lovely spring colour, after all the dark shades of winter. Boiled wool is a knitted, pure wool fabric which has then been effectively boiled to felt it slightly. This makes a lovely warm, textured fabric that does not fray and can be washed.

I pre-washed my boiled wool, although you should get minimal shrinkage due to the fact that it has been boil washed prior to purchasing. It is worth taking careful note of the number of pieces you need to cut for each pattern piece if you are making the single layer jacket. Boiled wool is very similar on both sides of the fabric, however I made sure that I kept all the pieces the same way round to ensure that there were no slight differences in the finish.

The Alston pattern includes instructions for making with Boiled Wool, which shows how to do faux flat felled seams to give a neat finish on the inside too.

My pattern choice

The pattern suggests that for boiled wool, you use a rotary cutter for the best results to make sure the cut edges are smooth, which is important for doing both the faux felled seams and also the raw edges around the jacket.

I found a walking foot made the sewing much easier as the fabric is quite thick. The markings on my walking foot also made the 12mm (½in) seam allowance very accurate. Once the seams are stitched you can then trim one of the allowances to do the faux flat felled seams. This needs pressing and to get a good finish, this is best achieved with steam and a pressing cloth.

Once the jacket was pieced together, I stitched a straight line about 3mm (1/8in) from the raw edges all the way round to stabilise them. This gives a nice finish to the edge and ensures that they don’t stretch during wear.

Finally, you can make the jacket with or without a belt and pockets. I found that the pockets were a little too heavy for

the boiled wool when made double and turned right side out, so I cut out the same pattern piece, but just once for each pocket. I added an extra ¼in (7mm) onto the diagonal edge and trimmed all the other edges by 10mm (3/8in). Along the diagonal edge, I turned in 15mm (5/8in) and topstitched this. The pockets were then topstitched onto the jacket in the positions indicated on the pattern piece. I did two rows of topstitching around the pockets to make sure they were firmly attached.

Summary

The end result is a very comfortable, warm, but not too heavy jacket that’s perfect for spring and autumn when you need an extra layer but don’t want to be bundled up in heavy, large coats.

For the Alston, choose broadcloth or linen to make a reversible jacket or make it like Jacqui in boiled wool for a classic single layer jacket that you will turn to time and time again! BOILED WOOL

What is Boiled Wool?

Boiled wool is as the name suggests, and is usually a knit wool or wool/rayon blend fabric that’s agitated with hot water in a process called ‘fulling’. This shrinks and compresses the fibres (around 2050%), so it traps tiny air bubbles to make a tighter, felted fabric. Wool is a natural material and has great properties anyway but the boiling process strenghtens these and results in a thick, breathable fabric that’s wind and water resistant and keeps the heat in!

Choosing a sewing pattern

Boiled Wool fabrics can be used to make a wide range of winter garments like coats, jackets, blazers, cardigans and accessories like berets, boots, slippers, hats and bags but you should also think-outof-box as it’s great for making dresses, tunics and skirts too! Because this fabric is very durable, it is a good investment and a garment will last several winters without losing its shape. Boiled wool garments are timeless and won’t go out of fashion!

TIP: It’s best to choose simple shapes where the garment doesn’t have lots of potentially bulky seams.

Pre-washing

Even though this fabric has been through a shrinking process in manufacture, don’t fall into the trap of thinking that it won’t shrink! I recommend that you pre-wash on a delicate wool cycle, and buy 20% more fabric than you need to allow for this additional shrinkage.

Cutting your fabric

Cut edges on boiled wool rarely fray so require very little hemming or finishing (which is great!). Use a rotary cutter with a new blade along with a ruler to guide the cuts. Transfer markings with tailor tacks in a contrasting coloured thread, as chalk pencils etc. will brush off on this type of fabric.

It’s easy to sew with a few simple tips:

Notions:

• Use a ballpoint needle that has a rounded tip that slips through the fibres without snagging or cutting them. For heavier fabrics use a 90/14 or 100/15 needle and for lighter-weight wool you may want to try a thinner needle, such as an 80/12 sized needle.

• Test your stitch length on a scrap.

• Choose a silk thread or polyester-wrapped cotton thread, this will give a more professional finish.

Seam Finishes

Boiled wool can be bulky, so avoid using finishing techniques like French seams, which add extra bulk. Take advantage of wool’s lack of fraying and opt for techniques like pinking and grading to reduce the bulk in your seams and keep them flexible. If you want to hide unfinished seams, consider lining your garment.

TIP : I like to add a stretch zigzag stitch on the right side of seams in a matching thread to add a decorative touch to the garment.

Pressing

Press seams flat with a roller or your fingers or press on a low heat sparingly, and use a pressing cloth to help protect the fabric as you press.

TIP : Don’t overpress as it can leave shiny marks and stretch your garment out of shape.

Hemming

Boiled wool doesn’t fray, so needs very little hemming! You can leave completely raw or sew a single line of stitching about ½in from the edge to create a fringed look over time.

Garment aftercare

Dry-clean your garment occasionally. A good time to do this is just before the new winter season. Unfortunately moths like boiled wool too! Help to protect your woollen garments by storing in a sealed garment bag.

QUILT Quick

Make a cosy light & dark quilt to snuggle up with, that’s super fast to sew!

Art Gallery Fabric Wonders 10in packs are a great way to make a quick quilt, we used the Dusk Fusions pack for this quilt but any of the many ranges would work well. Each pack contains 42 pre-cut 10in squares from the relevant range. Depending on the range these will vary in terms of light and dark.

1. I firstly split the pack into light and dark colours. You will need an equal number of light and dark squares to make the quilt. On doing this, I found that I needed to add a few more light fabrics so added four from the Art Gallery Fabric’s Elements ranges. I needed approx 30cm width of fabric pieces of each of the four colours.

2. Match each dark square with a light square and place right sides together, make these pairs as random as possible. You then need to draw a line from one corner diagonally to the opposite corner as shown here. I used a Frixion Pen for this as it disappears when heat is applied.

4. Now press the squares open, and press the seams towards the darker triangle. You will need to trim the squares you have made into an exact size. This is easiest done using a square quilter’s ruler at least 10in square and ideally with a diagonal line.

TIP: I found that mine came up at 9¼in but this may vary slightly depending on the exact size of your seams. Place the diagonal line of the ruler onto the seam across the middle of your square and trim two sides then turn the ruler round, line up the diagonal line again and trim the remaining two sides. Complete until all the squares are trimmed to the same size, you are now ready to choose your pattern layout.

3. This line will be your guide when sewing the squares together. You will see ¼in each side of this line. Once this is done, cut the triangles apart by either rotary cutting along the drawn line or cut with scissors.

Choosing a pattern layout

There are a number of layouts that can be done with these light and dark squares. Mine was done in a cross pattern starting in the middle but I have included some other layout options. You will have a few squares left over from whichever layout you use. I joined these together in a strip and placed them into the backing for the quilt as it makes the reverse side of the quilt a little more interesting too!

5. Depending on how many additional fabrics you have added you should have between 42 and 58 squares. I used a 6 x 8 layout and an additional 8 squares across the backing. My finished quilt measures 52in by 70in.

TRENDSETTER

One of the few things for which we can thank the pandemic is loungewearsomething that’s as comfy as pyjamas but also as stylish as a cashmere jumper!

READY SET CO-ORD!

This two-piece pattern is a relaxed but elegant set that consists of a long sleeve tee and wide leg pants with high, elasticated waist and no side seams. You can sew the straight cut tee as a dainty rolled hem funnel neck or a deep V-neck with binding. The blouse hem, sleeves and leg openings can be finished with a rolled hem or a simple turn-up. This sewing pattern comes in size XS-XXL, and can be made in cosy light to medium-weight knit fabric with approximately 40-50% stretch.

VERSATILE TROUSERS

The Jorun leggings is such a versatile pattern and has three different views to choose from. This pattern can be made as a classic pair of leggings with tight long legs, a ’70s-inspired flared trouser with a high waistline or biker shorts for warmer days. Both the classic leggings and biker shorts have no side seams so they’re very quick and easy to put together. This pattern is ideal for light to medium-weight jersey with four-way stretch like cotton jersey and viscose jersey.

This loose fit drop shoulder sweater is one of our favourites and also a bestselling pattern. It has a wide selection of options including a crew or funnel neckline, two sleeve and four hem styles that can be mixed and matched to find your perfect sweater. Make in medium weight knits with at least 10% stretch like sweatshirt fleece, French terry and sweater knits. We love the cute little extra details like curved hemline, split sleeve hem and waist tie!

Tracy Perks is the designer behind Rope & Anchor Trading. Working from her narrowboat studio on a canal, she takes inspiration from nature around her! Her quilt patterns come in an easy-to-use printed booklet format, and there’s currently six to choose from – the Bumble Bee, The Tomte, the Darling Bug, The Giraffe, The Hare and The Moth. All Elizabeth Hartman patterns are made using conventional patchwork without templates or paper piecing! She now has four new adorable quilt patterns to make both large and small quilts:
