Changhua County locates at south North Latitude, so the north side of the building can still get the sun in winter. It provides the opportunity of growing plants in the north side. However, the plants grown at the north side have to be the kind which needs less sun light or inderict sun.

Analysis
In summer, warm South-West wind blows in to Taiwan. It’s very warm and humid. Summer is also the season for typhoon. It brings lots of rain water. The humidity raise and things can become moldy sometimes. However, during the summer daytime, cloth can get dry very quickly if leave them under the sun. On the other hand, cold North-East wind blows in winter. The wind can be very strong and cold in somedays, which is Cold Current. Fortunately, the north side of the building can still get sun in the winter. It decrease the chance from getting mold.
Winter
Inspired by dandelion saw while the site investigation. Like weeds is everywhere, but they are not the same, instead, they’re different from each other. It’s like this building. Abandoned building could be found all over the world. However, they are all unique due to the location, culture, people, and other elements that make them rare. When the wind blows and spread the seed from the dandelion, it spread its’ next generation to other place and thrive. Take the idea, the designer finds the seeds of the building and blow it to other place. According to the research, the native of plant, flower nurseries,

The four-story building will be renovated into a community center which is for educational and recreational uses. Inspired by the four seasons and the actions of animals, the four floors will be distributed to each season. Story House is a renovation project of an existing modern building in Beidou Township, in the central Taiwan. The project seeks to re-attract residences and visitors to the area as through education and innovation of the area industries, such as nurseries of local flora, and textiles. This innovation and education can reinvigorate the industries, as well as educate future generation on the importance of local culture and the native flora of Taiwan.
the last, fourth floor will be Winter for guests staying overnight. Since Dandelion is a very common plant in the area, and very strong for the all season, so it represent the Taiwan original plant. And I use it as images and the symbol of the building. Since Dandelion is all tear and there are many different plants and flower thrive in different time, so I apply the four season: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter to each floor. Also categorize different levels from public to private, according the human activities.

and historical textile industry are the most valuable elements from this area. People come visiting, exploring, and remember here. Then they leave and share with whoever. The experience is the seed, the sharing is the wind. Sharing the experience is like blowing the seed to other place. More people will learn the place, know more about the area, treasure the native plants more. This is how the dandelion inspire the concept. In a short conclusion of above, designing an educational community center with commercial, educational, and living space, to promote the value of native plants, flower nurseries, and historical textile industry. Over time, people will see this place unique and keep coming back.
Concept Development Dandelion is the inspiration of the concept, so thinking about how to merge the abstract concept to the existing building is the key. Start from analysis the human activities and the function in the existing building. Since there are four floors, so the activities and the function will be easily divided by floors. From the first floor, which can be easily access by the public, will be the public function. So the designer decided to apply the functions from public to private, along to the lower level to higher level. First floor is for retail and the second is for restaurant. These two floor are for public use and will be easily access by the public. And since the second floor is like a mezzanine, so customer can see each other very easily. Third floor is for workshop space and office. It’s semi-public area. Public customers can easily access, but most of them come for specific request. For example, textile class and plant nurseries event. Students from nearby schools come for events. The classrooms are divided by moveable glass panel. So the classrooms can merge into one open place by moving the panel.

First Floor Initial ideas for the different functions. There will be a Cafe for attracting customer from outside, a Roasting Area to supply the Cafe, a Potting Shed to display plants, and a Green House to supply the Potting Shed. With more detail spaces provided to complete the main area. Different seating areas provide customers places to stay after buying drinks from the Cafe. A workshop area supplies the Roasting Area for packing and customer experiencing. Potting Shed is divided with an indoor plants growing section, a potting section for customized pot, and a section for display supplies. The Green House separates sections for plants which need direct sun, indirect sun, and vertical shelves for economic plants.

Second Floor On the second floor is a restaurant that provides lunch and dinner, and it has a private lounge area for regular seating for occasional events. With a ramp connecting to the first floor, customers can walk down to the Green House and pass through plants to experience a forest atmosphere. The main entrances to the restaurant will be next to the spiral stairs and the elevator. Another entrance will be for going down to the Green House. The restaurant also features different seating areas: a bigger group seating area with large table, more two-seat tables for flexible seating situations, a private seating area for more seats or events, and a patio seating area for an outside experience. The kitchen will be provide hot and cold food, and the bar serves drinks. The ramp leads customers to go down to the first floor, and leads customer to another outside ramp which goes up to the third floor.
Forth floor is only for hospitality. Customers can come up, but only can access by room key or the front desk staff open for them. It’s very secure and separated from public. According to the human activities, from active public function to dormant private use, it apply the dandelion’s growing phases. Thrive in flower shape, absorb the nutrition for later phase. Dry up the petal and grow seed. Develop in the seed phase, and let the wind blow and spread. Wait in the last phase and in winter. Spring is the most active season, like the dandelion flower attracts animal. Summer sun keep the world running, like the dandelion develop the seed for the big picture. Fall is another season for species bloom, same as the mature seed spread out. Winter is the quiet season, the dandelion is also waiting for another growing circle.
After areas are decided, circulation is the last step to complete before get more detail design. Customer will go through the Cafe to the Potting Shed. Pass the Roasting Area, customer will go up to the second floor. The Potting Shed is connect to the Green House, so customers can walk through the building very easily without hard turn.
