Midpoint Proposal: Hotel Design

Gotel Table of Content -Autobiography -Resume -Timeline -Portfolio -Thesis Proposal

When I applied to attend university the professor at my interview asked me , “Why do you want to study architecture?” My response was, “I want to build a dream house for my family.” This was my original motivation for studying architecture. Indeed my first encounter with architecture was while participating in the design of our family home. Painting is my passion. It has made me a patient observer of life and habitually attentive to detail. It also helped me later when it came to the development of space and figuring out dimensions and scale. As an undergraduate, I first studied spatial development and practical application skills. This began with handpainted construction plans and creating architectural models in order to better understand structure. Next came model conversion, achieved via computer graphics integrated with an aesthetic sensibility, to facilitate learning the application of software and drawings to exhibit concepts and processes. The last phase consisted of applying the appropriate final embellishing touches and formally presenting one’s results.

Autobiography

I am confident that these fundamental skills will greatly aid my future career development in the design field. My biggest gain from studying architecture came during the design process when I made conceptual breakthroughs strengthening my logical analysis skills facilitating my ability to develop important topics of keen personal interest. While acquiring an understanding of architecture I simultaneously came to know myself much better as well. For example, during the development of my graduation design exhibition, I learned to honestly confront strengths and weakness in my skill sets and general capabilities. Rather than primarily develop my command of theory and concepts, I became aware that I am in fact better suited to combine the latter with practical application and utilize data analysis to develop designs.

For this class, we are designing a hotel, which is located in 1540 Broadway, Oakland, California. We work for Hotels Group International, Inc. (HGI). The hotel is an eight stores building and we are doing first and second floors. There will be a lobby, restaurant, cocktail lounge, a grand ballroom, a banquet room, meeting rooms, a health club, and the executive offices. We are assigned to design one hotel room as well. There are two basement levels for parking and a rooftop sky bar. The sky bar will provide cocktails, musical entertainment, and light hors d’oeuvres from the restaurant kitchen (via a elevator). The hotel is inspired by Oakland’s culture and my feeling of first time visting the hotel. Our main target clients are travelers and business people, so I not only want to create a confort living area, but also want to connect outsiders with local.

The area of the city of Oakland was originally inhabited by the Costanoan Indians. In the early 1770s, the Spanish was the first white people to visit this area. Simple mineral mining began for common minerals but quickly turned to gold mining when it was discovered in 1848. The sudden influx of gold seeker forced the formulation of a local government and legal system, which also paved the way for the town to become a city in 1854. With close proximity to San Francisco, the area flourished with businesses locally and within its vicinity. Oakland profited from that advantage and became a major port for both cities. Currently, Oakland is one of the busiest ports in the world for container ships. There are many natural features along with numerous attractions.

Site Analysis

Solar Study

Strength of the site:

Weakness of the site:

- Long history - Lots of Events - Museums - Easy to access - People diversity - Less hotel nearby

- Not safe at night - Not many restaurants in the area - Parking for loading is not easy

Summary: The good location provides opportunities for hotel business. Due to long history and culture diversity, people have more options and are more welcome to try new things. Also, there are less other hotels nearby which means we don’t have other competitors in this area. This is our opportunity. On the other hand, safety will be our concern. This will be our challenge.

Site Analysis Neighborhood Study

Downtown Oakland Population Breakdown By Race

Source of Income

Household Income Distribution

Come with dierent culture and use habits, and the food types are aected as well.

By knowing the jobs around, we can know if the customer would stay for long or short term, these will aect the room design.

By analysing household income in oakland, we can set the hotel price easier if we need to serve local people.

Site Analysis

Site Study

Crime Distribution

Transportations and Activies Nearby ASSAULT MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT LARCENY THEFT ROBBERY DRUG ABUSE VIOLATION BURGLARY VANDALISM

By knowing the safety in the area, we can know where the security needs to pay more attention or avoid some mistakes.

Downtown Age Breakdown

By knowing the age in the area, we can design public are or most of them. For example, bars open till late are more for young people.

Transportation: BART, buses, bikes, parking: According to the analysis, there many ways to access the site from either barting from SFO or driving from south bay and park nearby. Activities: There are many attractions not far from downtown Oakland. For tourists, the site is a very convenience location for traveling. So it’s easy to expect to have more tourists at some festivals or even normal days.

Conclusion: Based on the research of Oakland downtown, I found that the major races nearby our site are African American and Asian people. This information is useful for us to design the hotel due to different races have different cultures and use habits. Also, the crime distribution will be a key point to improve for theis neighbor, so I'll aim to this.

Site Analysis

Site Study

Strengths: - It will be a 8 story building, so it's easy to be seen from many direction than the buildings next to it. - The transpotation is very good and easy to access. - Oakland is a city with long history, so there are many design ideas.

Weaknesses: - Only one side of the building has both view and natural light. - The courtyard is the only light source or the rooms and other rooms. - Lack of ventilation. - Parking and loading area is limited.

Opportunities: - According the history research we did before, Gold seekers can be the biginning of the design. - The locations is very good. - People keep sayinf the safety is not good is this area, but it's also a opportunity for design.

• Courtyard: It’s the opportunity to get the natural light for the lower levels. • Exit passway and exit enclosure on the noth and east side. • The first floor height is 34.43' lower than the courtyard. • There are a lot of vertical shafts on the third floor to eighth floor. We need to think about the vertical space even if we are just designing one floor. • The walls of the vertical shafts can not be demolished.

Concept Statement

Concept Statement Gold Rusher

According to the research of history and culture, the location makes Oakland matter and the Gold made Oakland bigger. The location of the site is very good, and the design has to find the "Gold", the opportunity of the hotel, and makes it matter and bigger again.

Activities

Due to there are many restaurant and events going on in downtown Oakland, I think it's a good opportunity to connect the people from the hotel and locals. By creating connections, the more people will willing to come and visit the area.

-Description:The Saiba Side Chair pairs a cushioned, fully upholstered bucket seat with striking wood legs. It reads as a singular, familiar form, at home wherever elegant guest seating is needed. A closer a closer look, the impeccable tailoring and gentle curves of the side chair reveal the attention to detail that's become a signature of designer Naoto Fukasawa's Saiba family of seating and tables, elevating the design beyond expectations.

-Description:In designing the Tronco Chair for Mattiazzi, Sam Hecht and Kim Colin embraced the challenge of creating a stackable solid wood chair. Then they went a step further, considering the chair itself as part of a system. Not only does Tronco stack up to 5-high, but its strong presence translates well even in spaces where large number of chairs are joined together in rows.

-Description: A blend of materials ensures the chair offers a supportive and comfortable sit. Foam of differing densities fill the back, arms, and body of the chair. Feather and down create softness in the top cushion of the seat.

-Description: Its wide range of customization options, with several top shapes and heights, and a selection of color finishes, make it the ideal side table, coffee table, or meeting table, whether used on its own or grouped together.

-Description: The Tu Mobile Pedestal gives you con-venient access to everything from technology tools and work materials to bags and other personal items. It's a filing cabinet that sits right at your side, wherever you happen to be, and can be easily moved when you move. With three drawer options, you can customize the Tu Mobile Pedestal to your taste.

Thesis Proposal Mission Statement

Beidou Township is a quiet town where there are many florists and tree farmers. So when the season comes, many people will go to see the flowers and different kind of trees. Also schools take children to the town and learn many knowledge about flowers and trees. Also, Beidou Township is the biggist town of making socks and towels in Taiwan. It was a very busy town in the past. I think it's very important to remember the past and learn the future. This is a very opportunity to creat a multiple use of hotel and education space for tourists to stay while visiting, also let them learn the history and making some crafts as memory.
