01 Noodles Inspired Kindergarten Renovation of Old Mall into kindergarten Year: 2021 Location: Shanxi, China Instructor:Jinrui Liu, Yan Jia Category: Renovation Project Role: In charge of PD&SD phase of the project State: In built

We transformed an old department store at the bottom of the high-rise into a kindergarten, which is more difficult than expected. The base is located in the traditional urban center of Taiyuan. The dual pressure of the decline of department stores and the lack of preschool education places gave birth to this "wild" transformation project.

SITE ANALYSIS

CONCEPT How to make children aged 1.5-6 feel their hometown, the most likely answer is food. Noodles are flexible and chewy, which is a subtle brand. Children studying here may have to leave their hometown with their parents, but our kindergarten time can retain more fetters with their hometown. "The Noodles" has become a clue to connect the core space, turning the whole atrium into a game space.

GENERATION The department store was designed twenty years ago. The public space that can be directly used is only the original circular small atrium and the escalator well on the other side. Even, the original store did not have a large outdoor activity site available. Therefore the design had to open the whole floor and build a natural environment including grassland, woods and streams inside the building. Site view:

GENERATION "Water tank building" is the energy center in the campus. The design needs to add an experimental learning center for the school on the basis of retaining the original function. On the basis of retaining the water tank, the transformation increases the daylighting of the original energy building by embedding a dynamic atrium. With the concept of super folding, the design creates more learning, communication and sharing space in the limited space. The atrium combines shared space with traffic space.

The facade of the building is decorated with perforated aluminum plate which greatly reduces the shading coefficient of the glass and plays a good shading role. The choice of interior materials were mainly using timber for atrium stairs and white anfd blue emulsion paint for the rest of the space. The ceiling was using perforated plate to cover the equipment and pipeline. We were using foam board and timber to make the main structure of this section model, and 3D printed the louvers of the building with translucent material. 03 Unbounded School Design of primary school

Year: 2021 Location: Shandong, China Type:Education Building Instructor:Jinrui Liu, Mingxi Zou Role: In charge of PD phase of the project State: Second award

Primary school design in China has always been a game that challenging the strict building code. Many interesting designs even come from "resistance" and "challenge". How to design a interesting, distinctive and thoughtful primary schools in strict local building codes is the biggest challenge of this project. The design of this primary school is a severe test. The project base is narrow, long and tense, and "discipline" and "freedom" cannot be reconciled.

11

SITE ANALYSIS

SITE STRATEGY Surrounding the site is a large area of industrial park land, and the primary school is an important active element in it. With the Golden River and riveside park to the north, the design requirements of the 30-class primary school are destined to make the area full of vigorous running atomsphere.

Traditional primary school campus teaching, sports and nature are isolted. We create communication through design, encourage children to release their nature, and hope they can learn more from their curiosity. Encourage learning while running, jumping and playing, and learn from nature.

The challenge of the site is its long and narrow shape with 250 meters long and 100 meters wide. The school also required a standard playground with 400 meters. And also the health distance between the buildings have to be at least 25 meters. In addition, the distance from the main road also need to be considered in this project. be at least 25 meters. In addition, the distance from the main road also need to be considered in this project.

NARRATIVE: The site is located in the center of Fushan District, which is one of the industry district of Yantai City. The site was surrounded by industrial parks and factory. The Foxconn Factory and its staff dormitory has taken a large area on the north side. There is a river on the north of the site and only 2km away from the Bohai Sea.

DESIGN STRAGIES The situation of the site is strict and difficult to use. The entrance and exit can only face the two-way eight lane traffic trunk road, which is very dangerous for both students and parents. We set back the school gate and raise the playground to form a gray space. The gray space can be used as waiting area for parents and also the main entrance of the school. The traffic flow outside the school to pick up children will no longer interfere with the urban trunk road. Due to the area of the site is limited, we raised the playground to form two activity spaces up and down. The north side of the education complexfacing the atrium and is fully connected to facilitate students' learning and communication. On the south side, there are layers of retreats facing the playground. It is a place for sports loving children to chase and play.

1. Hidden entrance

The main building is hidden behind the playground. The school gate was designed set back and raise the playground to have a gray space under the aerial playground. The gray space can be used as waiting area for parents and also the main entrance of the school. Parents who pick up students will also be protected in this area which 10 meters away from the urban trunk road.

2. No street facade In order to ensure the playground and activity space in the limited space, we decided to place the campus entrance and visiting circulation under the playground. The aerial playground has a 400m long standard runway with a football field and grandstand on the east side. The sunken activity plaza was beneath the aerial playground with basketball field and also allow students to play table tennis.

04 Children utopia Children Health Care Center Design

Year: 11/2019 Location: 459 Lygon St, Carlton, Melbourne, Australia Type:Individual work Instructor:Hella F M Wigge Category: Hospital Design

This project is called children utopia. It is a community where no disease,no harm , no isolation and no sadness. Therefore, the cilent will be mainly children and teenagers. This children's wonderland not only allows children who has mental health problems to come but also invite all the kids and parents around the neighbourhood to the facility. So they will no longer feeling depressive and isolated. They will be accompany with other kids and friends.

19

SITE ANALYSIS

The site analysis shows that the healthcare center is facing the Melbourne cemetery. There is a tram line on the Lygon st which is very convenient for people to reach the site. However on the cemetery road there is a heavy traffic line which is dangerous for people and inconvenience for cars to park. The south side is Lytton st which is facing the residence, building heights and views will be considered in the design as well.

The hand drawing sketch was the initial proposal respond to the site analysis. The form was designed to stretch out to have multiple entrance which allow pedestrians visit in any direction and have views from each side. And also wish to invite landscape into the building. The original ideas was put the health care center at the center of the site with the curved landscape cut into the form. The residence will be placed at the south of the corner.

20

BIRDVIEW The aerial view diagram showing that the site was mainly divided into three parts which is the children hospital on the north and surrounded by residentials with landscape in between. The building heights were designed to maximise the sunrise on the north in australia. The hospital had two sides facing the street which can be easily access. On the other hand, to keep the children away from the main road, the main entrance was designed inside the park. In addition, there were four residentials in this site with one multi-function activity center which allow the people around this area to use.

GENERATION In terms of the form of the building, it was inspired by stacking toys like LEGO. The main volume intersect with each other with different scale and height. A bridges to connect the four main volumes. Soften the edges which create several side entrance and make it more welcoming. Finally adding some playful elements to it like sphere glazing and openings.

SCENARIO

The original site was really hard to get access. Respond to the context, I drew a serveral of lines to create the access and also the line to divided the site into serveral parts.

The priority of this design is playfulness, having the ideas of keep health from playing. To achieve that by using simple geometry and colors to create a lot of interesting moments. Therefore I designed some interesting spaces like cate cafe or library.
