In memory of

HHHL Master Instructor Jackie Chant

I’ve known Jackie for almost 30 years and we worked together to help make the world a happier place for horses and the people who love them She was a huge supporter of me when my life changed and was a great example as one of our finest instructors. My heart goes out to her family, her son Cooper, her friends and students. She leaves behind a legacy of love and trust and honor and will be with me every day Jackie had such a great energy and enthusiasm that inspires us all. - With Love, Linda Parelli

It’s Astonishing How Many Riders Make So Little Progress Despite Years of Instruction!

Linda Parelli is driven, driven by a passion to make horse ownership more enjoyable for horses, and the people who ride them Yet despite over thirty years of educating people on how to have a better relationship with their horse, it’s only in the last eighteen months, since she completely revamped her approach that she has seen such amazingly fast and lasting results with her students

SAYS LINDA

“It is astonishing how many riders who have been taking lessons for years, sometimes decades, find themselves stuck and dealing with the same horse problems year after year No matter what program you’ve studied, or who you are studying with, if you’re still having ANY issues with your horse it is not working The fact is most instructional programs have gaping holes in them, even the previous natural horsemanship program I co-created ”

A little over two years ago, after an acrimonious divorce, Linda went to work with a clean slate to reinvent herself and design a program that plugged those holes. One that would eradicate once and for all, the ongoing problems that people have even after years of trying to fix them

PROBLEMS – BIG OR SMALL, SABOTAGE YOUR PROGRESS

Most horses are disconnected, tense, resistant, spooky, go too fast or lazy, stiff instead of supple, there’s no harmony… and that’s not even covering the more serious problems like bucking, rearing, and bolting When there are problems there cannot be harmony. Interestingly, everywhere Linda went, the list of problems was almost the same She started to mind map the problems and solutions coming up with an excellent heart-shaped, tool for solving just about any difficulty a student might encounter.

THEN LINDA ASKED QUESTIONS:

Now that you see the origin of the problems (as per the chart), she then asks the most important questions…

How do you get a horse to connect with you?

How do you relax a horse?

How to you get him confident?

How do you regulate his gait without using your hands and legs?

How do you get a horse soft and supple without making him rubbernecked?

How do you get a horse to be in harmony with you, without micromanaging it?

Nobody seemed to know the answer!

“Yet if you have a horse,” says Linda, “You must know the answers to these questions This is the secret of a happy horse and a happy life together Most programs are very technical in their approach, and many people get stuck because it does not serve their real needs Therefore, no matter how passionate or dedicated they might be they cannot get to a higher level unless they are highly talented Lack

TRAINING THAT PROVIDES LASTING RESULTS AND WORKS FASTER

Linda thought long and hard about how she could create a training program beyond anything she had ever seen, experienced, or helped create in the past. Every day for months she poured over the concepts, developed the details, moved things around, and changed the sequence to get better results She tested her new strategies first on herself, on her horses, then with her students and instructors. Every single piece of her new curriculum had to be better, faster, easier, and more empowering, not just a variation of what she’d been doing for the past 30 years The result was a complete blueprint to better horsemanship, training, and riding she called How to Talk Horse

THE HOW TO TALK HORSE CURRICULUM IS GETTING AMAZING RESULTS

The revolutionary curriculum Linda has developed is a combination of videos, self-evaluations, and written instructions that are simple and direct, a reflection of Linda’s gifted teaching approach Students can go through at their own pace and even ask questions

Once each module is completed, they can use the Success Program to selftest or submit an official test for review and feedback Those who pass are provided a level-specific certificate of completion, but real satisfaction comes from the results

Before: Elia and Bentley (ex-racehorse) were having regular lessons, yet she often fell off, the horse was tense, resistant, and ran off a lot Elia was badly hurt a few times, resulting in surgeries and an ultimatum from her parents. That's when she found Linda and the How to Talk Horse Curriculum

After: Elia booked a 10-day course, then another one a few weeks later, and was so impressed with the results she applied for a one-year internship to continue her study with Linda. Look at the transformation! It doesn't even look like the same horse and rider The horse is positive, happy, and relaxed He put on weight, his immune system got stronger, and he became the picture of health and happiness - mentally, emotionally, and physically Elia not only evolved rapidly as a rider, but she also became a skilled horsewoman and Happy Horse Instructor who understands horses and uses Linda's curriculum to transform her students.

“The results we are getting are just phenomenal. I get multiple emails daily from people all over the world having amazing breakthroughs with their horses I’ve taken everything I have learned over the last thirty years to an entirely new level to help people truly connect with their horse, know what it needs and quickly solve problems. People are shocked by how quickly they get results after years of frustration when they learn How to Talk Horse!” - Linda Parelli

LINDA WAS NOT KIDDING. SHE SHOWED US HUNDREDS OF EMAILS AND COMMENTS FROM STUDENTS ENJOYING BREAKTHROUGH RESULTS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THEIR LIVES.

"I WANT TO SHOUT FROM EVERY ROOF TOP

THIS PROGRAM WORKS! We had to do our first endurance ride today on our own only had kasper for a year ott and thanks to linda parelli and this amazing amazing program.....Well we did it! Kasper was a superstar I did a bit of everything to keep his connection including getting off at times to play stay back and also in the saddle and it all paid off....vetted with all As and 1s and a heart rate of 40....huge achievement for us both!" -

"I agree this new program has a fluidity to it Each day I find it easier to meet my horses where they are at that moment. The formula for the first three modules is so helpful I can see more clearly when my connection is not there because I am more present. I am more relaxed, so it is easier to help my horses find it. I am more confident, so it is easier to help my horses be more confident I don’t feel rushed, and I can slow down Teaching lightness has been the missing link for me Now I get it! Thank you to Linda!" -

"I love how Module 1,2, and 3 really helped me address my fear and found that not having a connection with my horse left me feeling unsafe for advancing my riding. Having a way to get that connection and knowing that is what it is have given me so much confidence :)" -

"I am loving working through the first 3 modules of the program. I am a long time Parelli student, but you have simplified it and made it very easy to follow Thanks Linda!" -

"I just started this course, and I am so impressed and excited! What an excellent beginning Thank you, Linda, for all the time and effort, the knowledge shared and the breakdown in a way that enables us to learn and progress. " -

"The Program is just amazing it’s taking me some time to understand the overview and how it unfolds in each module as you bring us into the layers that become so specific, as well as using the great tools of selfevaluation and charts to measure our progress and remain progressive The videos are fabulous and support the text at just the right places Keeping a great balance for those of us who are visual learners Just brilliant, Linda. Module 4 is what my horse and I really need right now!!! Thank you "

WHAT HORSES NEED

To bring out the best in a horse, we have to make sure their primary needs are met – mentally, emotionally, and physically. Obviously, they need water, shelter, proper feeding, and exercise; but what of their mental and emotional needs? This is where the biggest hurdles to ensure a horse’s “happiness” exist Until you know what is important to them, it is almost impossible to provide for their mental and emotional wellbeing

Horses need connection, comfort, and choice, and it is our responsibility to provide that for them… if we want a happy horse!

CONNECTION

Just like people connect easily with others who are like them, horses connect quickly with other horses It doesn't mean they are best friends from

the get-go, it means they start to explore the relationship and see what kind of connection they have: Who is the leader?

This is the reason horses play dominance games with each other and with you

As horse lovers, we want to be affectionate and kind, give them treats, to love and care for them And it can hurt our feelings when they develop a whole host of ‘typical’ behavior problems both on the ground and riding Things like nipping, can’t stand still, herd bound, spooky, resistant, lazy, crazy, bucking, control issues again, the list can be long!

While there are strategies to help improve these behaviors, the first thing you can do to improve the relationship This primarily means learning how to use your energy

MATCH THE ENERGY

Relationships are tricky with horses, partly because they are a different species, but also because we don’t recognize their individual characteristics concerning energy and confidence. As with people, the more alike you are the easier it is to gain rapport and quickly form and maintain positive relationships with you as the leader The more different your energy compared to the horse’s, the more likely you are to disturb each other

The key to success here, is learning how to match your horse’s energy – mentally, emotionally, and physically

Physical Energy: This is the easiest one to match Watch how quickly or slowly your horse moves and adjust your movements to match that

Mental Energy: This is not so easy because you have to be able to read how quickly a horse is thinking, no matter how fast or slow it is moving You can detect how quickly a horse thinks in two ways – its curiosity and speed as a learner and how it reacts to stimuli, from resistance or fear (spooking). Learn more about horse behavior patterns in Module 8 of the Happy Horse Curriculum

Emotional Energy: These tend to present as more negative - tension, fear, frustration, and aggression An emotional horse is one that feels threatened in some way and therefore not able to think, let alone learn or perform. When emotional, the horse is at risk of it exploding, rearing, bolting, bucking, kicking, striking, biting, or attacking, is very high To stay safe and have a productive training relationship you need to learn to detect the subtle signs and use the appropriate techniques to quell the emotion. This can involve everything from giving the horse something simple to focus on (Touch This –with nose or feet) or standing still and doing nothing (Parking Spot) Obviously, you do not need to match the emotional energy!

COMFORT - RELIEF FROM PRESSURE

If a fly is getting more response from your horse than you are, something is wrong We’ve all seen riders kicking and spurring, jerking on the reins, and the horse barely responds at all What’s the deal?

Horses are very sensitive animals. They can feel a fly land on their hair – it tickles and annoys them. They also know there might be a bite or sting coming so they are highly motivated to get rid of it

Interestingly, horses are less physically sensitive to strong pressure and are more inclined to tolerate rather than seek relief People often label these horses as dull or stubborn when the problem really is that the horse doesn't feel that uncomfortable, nor threatened, or has become desensitized over time.

Contrary to human logic, it’s not more pressure that is required, it’s less

There are two keys to sensitizing horses to pressure:

Light pressure is more effective – you have to be more like a fly!

Relief from pressure is what motivates response.

Slow down your application of pressure and remove the stimulus quickly. Be softer and more sensitive Give the horse time to process the information and understand the goal, especially when learning something new

It’s natural for people to use more force when something isn’t working, but this is not productive when training horses It does not produce a sensitive, responsive, and happy horse. On the contrary, it makes them dull and they lose trust.

Don’t use more pressure and force the horse Be a good teacher, a good communicator Get results through clarity and understanding

Good Teaching

Break things down into the smallest chunks of information; make it as simple as possible This prevents confusion and also builds into more complex concepts

For example, teach your horse to understand how to respond to your hands, your seat, your legs, the bit, the reins – each one independently It’s common for riders to use hands, heels, and seat all at once without realizing the horse does not understand each individually

Be gentle when teaching, don’t get stronger or faster, as it will trigger negative emotions Use gentle, clear gestures and calm, consistent repetition Most importantly soften or release the pressure when your horse tries to do the right thing

Good Communication: Have a clear picture of what you want before you ask your horse to do something In your mind, what should it look like, what should it feel like?

For example, you might want to trot a circle with the horse calmly stretching forwards and down into the bit, with rhythmic strides and a quiet mouth; or, you may want your horse to load calmly and stand quietly in the trailer before you close the tail bar, or maybe you want your horse to lead calmly from the pasture, staying

beside you rather than pulling away, lunging at the grass or dragging behind.

When you are clear it’s easy to interrupt undesirable behaviors and redirect them towards the desired ones When you are not clear you frequently end up saying ‘no’ to your horse which leads to tension and arguments rather than clarity and calmness. You’ll learn more about this in Modules 2 & 3 of the Happy Horse Curriculum

Force: Other words for force are push, compel, and coerce; this is why the use of force has no place in good horse training It’s much more productive to interrupt the unwanted behavior and redirect the horse towards the desired response – “Not that, this.” The only time you need to get firm or fast is if you are about to die! If you have to quickly stop a horse from running off or running over you, you will have to match the energy in order to be effective but without getting angry and punishing it There is a big difference:

Punishment is a reprimand and usually, the horse has no idea it was wrong Punishment provokes so-called behavior problems such as fear, frustration, and aggression. It ruins trust and diminishes respect

Interrupt and redirect: “Not that, this ” You’ll be amazed at how much better this works than telling a horse "No!" It keeps emotions down and helps the horse to learn the required response

CHOICE

Being flight animals, horses are deathly afraid of traps and, in the wild, avoid natural traps such as canyons, forests, mud, corners anything that compromises their ability to run to safety

Horses are plains animals that live in herds of about three to twenty Their survival is based on synchronizing with the herd, water, food, reproduction, not to mention the perception of danger Lightning-fast reactions and the ability to outrun a predator is what keeps them alive at the moment and even though many horses living in domestication are not in danger of being attacked by wolves and lions, they are still wired that way

Horses react to us the same way as those predators, even if we are vegan! It’s not so much about what we eat, as to how we approach them Our conscious or unconscious tendency to trap and control a horse triggers their innate fear of being attacked, and eaten because first, they will be trapped.

Life with humans is full of traps – paddocks, stables, lead ropes, cross ties, bridles, saddles & girths, the rider’s legs and hands, trailers, wash racks the list is long Most of us have no idea how horses perceive these things because they are so normal for us when interacting with horses The key is not to eliminate these things, that’s impossible and not practical, it is more about how to help the horse understand how to accept them and not react negatively. This is where choice comes in.

When you pull on the reins or lead rope, when you constantly push with your legs or tighten the girth too quickly, force a horse into a trailer it has no choice This triggers all the alarm bells in their survival brain.

HOW DO YOU GIVE A HORSE CHOICE?

1. You ask the horse to do something and wait to see if it does it. Sounds simple but this is really hard for people because if the horse doesn’t respond it is natural for us to get stronger and more urgent As you can imagine, this is the worst thing from the horse’s point of view

2. If the horse does it, smile and soften the pressure. Releasing or softening the pressure lets the horse know it’s right because horses innately seek relief from pressure

3 If the horse doesn’t do it, Repeat

Ask again – not harder, not softer, the same. Gently repeat until the horse understands the goal and keeps gaining the confidence to try If you get stronger and harsher, the horse gets more emotional and cannot think

Learning through choice

Allowing your horse to experiment and seek the answer helps them become good learners Teach your horse to achieve goals rather than making them do things For example teach your horse to load into a trailer instead of force your horse to get in teach your horse to stand still and relax for grooming, saddling and bridling rather than cross-tying teach your horse hold your hand via the bit rather than pull his head down… teach your horse to do a half pass rather than make him do it… etc.

It’s amazing how smart horses are once you know how to access their mind That’s what psychology is all about - getting to the mind, not just the body

BECOME A GREAT LEADER AND TEACHER FOR YOUR HORSE!

I have dedicated my life to empowering horse lovers with knowledge and strategies that work because they are based on knowing how to ‘talk horse’ –which is what my curriculum is all about Once you understand your horse’s needs and your horse can understand you, there is no limit to what you can achieve Not only that, you and your horse will both be happy!

FEAR

Over the past 22 years I’ve learned a lot about fear as both a student and a teacher and here’s the most important thing to know: FEAR IS AN IMPORTANT EMOTION

That’s because its whole purpose is to keep you alive I think the most devastating thing I hear from fearful or unconfident students is that they feel stupid They feel like they shouldn’t be afraid but when I see them with their horse I say, “YOU SHOULD BE AFRAID!”

Your horse is out of control, your balance and riding skills are not good enough for this situation and if you act brave you are going to get hurt or killed

Your fear is keeping you safe and alive, and pursuing your dream with horses.

You just need to know when your fear is real and when it is imagined and then learn how to move forward yet stay safe

LISTEN TO YOUR OWN ADVICE

Most people don’t think their fear of horses is justified You look at others around you and say, “They’re not afraid, what’s wrong with me?” And there’s only one thing worse and that’s “shoulding” on yourself: I should be able to do this, or that I should not be afraid Now not only is fear your worst enemy, but you are also! No one can put more pressure on you than you.

I’m going to help you stop that Your instincts are giving you good advice that you are ignoring. You listen to people who give you bad advice, who tell you “Just get on! What’s the matter with you? Everything is fine!” but you don’t listen to yourself and yet your brain knows what’s right

Next time you feel afraid or unsure and someone says “It’s okay, just do it!” think of this it’s not your body that’s getting up there or going to get scared or hurt, it’s mine So thank you for your confidence I’m sure you can do it, but I’m going to listen to my instincts. You might even have to say that out loud. And next time you hear yourself ‘shoulding’ on yourself say, “Shut up, shut up, shut up ” until you actually do! This is an NLP* technique that is very powerful and one of many you can use It simply trains your brain to change negative habits.

*NLP IS SHORT FOR NEURO LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING. SEE REFERENCES AT THE END OF THIS ARTICLE.

YOUR BRAIN IS TRAINED

When your brain senses danger its job is to keep you safe and it does that by giving you a fear sensation In other areas of your life, you would probably heed that fear and not rush headlong into danger. But when you override your fear

and do it anyway, or let someone else push you into doing it, your brain will start to make the fear response bigger and bigger and bigger until pretty soon you become incapacitated by it. Then one day just looking at your horse makes your life flash before your eyes, and this is the real tragedy because it makes you give up on your dream.

I’ve even had students ask me to push them through their fear but I refuse to do it anymore I’ve seen what happens and it doesn’t work: Your brain says “danger,” you push through your fear with false bravado, and people are cheering you on You get on or you canter or do whatever it is that scares you. You did it! You lived! Yes! You’re proud and feel like you’ve made a breakthrough but the cold, hard truth is yet to come. The next time, you’re back where you were and the fear hasn’t gone away and sometimes it’s worse

When you learn to listen to yourself, to trust your instincts, and then take the right steps, things will change for the better because you’ll learn how to manage your own fear and overcome it. Staying safe is your responsibility, no one else’s.

The Process

Preheat oven for 60 minutes at 500° with the pizza stone (if you have one) on the lower shelf.

In a measuring cup, add the yeast and sugar to the warm water. Set aside so that it can “bloom” (when the water has a foam on top)

Combine the 22oz of flour and 1 tablespoon salt and loosely mix in 1 tablespoon olive oil in a wide bowl

Once the water/yeast has bloomed. Move flour to the middle of the bowl, make moat around the edge and pour the yeast water mixture into the moat Stir around the edge of flour in one direction continuously moving the bowl, to create a slurry around the bulk of the flour

Gradually incorporate the flour into the slurry It may look dry as you get near the end.

Pickup the pancake by one edge and pull it as you pass the edges through the fingertips of your hands Squeezing the edges as you move it around, allowing the weight to enlarge the size of the pancake. It will get thinner and thinner as you go around and around the edges. Once its about 12 inches in diameter, you are ready to build your pizza!!!

Put it on a peel that’s dusted with semolina flour (or corn meal) or you can use a sheet of parchment paper.

Now you're ready to adorn your pie with your favorite toppings and get ready to enjoy one of the best pizza pies you’ve eaten!

IT'S NOT ABOUT THE TRAILER

SPRING 2021 | HAPPYHORSEHAPPYLIFE COM 21

Typically, a horse trailering problem isn’t about the trailer. It’s more about a horse’s overall confidence and hits almost every point in the dimensions of confidence – Nature, New, Learner, You:

Nature – A horse that is self-confident by nature is likely to be more curious about the trailer than afraid of it.

New – Prey animals greet all new and non-natural things with skepticism. Remember, they are always on the lookout for danger.

Learner – If the horse has never been in a trailer before, you have to patiently teach him all about it.

You – How you handle your horse, the situation, how you come across in terms of your own energy and confidence will profoundly affect your horse’s mental and emotional state. If your horse does not see you as his leader, he will not trust or respect you or your decisions especially in a challenging situation like being asked to get in a trailer – the scariest trap he’s ever seen Worse still, he might have been forced into a trailer against his will, the door slammed behind him and kept in there for hours.

BUILDING CONFIDENCE WITH THE TRAILER

Don’t Load Your Horse

Wait... What?!

This advice might be the last thing you would have thought you would read but there is true magic that happens when your intention is to not load your horse

If your horse has been forced into a trailer in the past or is nervous about getting in, he probably expects that every time you head toward the trailer, you’re going to make him get in, but what if you didn’t?

Just as you’ve learned to prepare your horse with all kinds of simulations, you can use the trailer as one of those… an obstacle to play with! Taking away the expectation to load will blow your horse’s mind, and will make the trailer more fun and interesting for both of you

Here is an example of how you can play with your trailer as a confidencebuilding obstacle.

Ask your horse to…

Pass between you and the trailer, typically the sides and back door, as the hitch may cause injury should your horse get scared here.

Go around you and park perpendicular to the trailer

Back up towards the side of the trailer or the back of the trailer.

Touch the inside of the trailer, or the ramp, with his nose

Touch the ramp with his front feet and come out.

Touch the ramp with his hind feet and come out

Touch the divider with his nose and come out

Touch the manger or front wall with his nose and come out.

TOUCH THISTHE TRAILER!

With all the doors closed, ask your horse to touch different parts of the trailer with his nose - the fender, the windows, the hitch, the back door

For extra incentive, you can even place some treats to find on it.
