Brenda Behling-Strack

Brenda Behling-Strack is a self-trained artist-in-residence in her hometown of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

In 2016 she started pouring all her creative energies into the restoration of a 4-story, 120-year old Victorian house, in which she now resides, runs as a bed and breakfast and houses her studio/workshop.

She has visualized her art on the walls and floors of the house, as well as the ceilings and furnishings throughout her interior design, incorporating architectural salvage in some of her projects, most notably, her mantles in each room of her home. Her primary focus is now on mosaics, which actually happened by accident. She was knee-deep in a tiling project on her basement floor when she opened the boxes, only to find them all broken beyond repair. Instead of wasting a fresh batch of glue, she decided to use them as is and ended up creating a Blue Heron in flight on the floor.

The project lasted 6 weeks from start to finish and by the end of it, she realized that although it was labor-intensive, it never felt like work. There was therapeutic value in the actual handling of the natural stones; and it was rewarding to give the broken tiles a second chance to become something beautiful.

That is how Broken Stone Studio became a reality - since then the studio space has been expanded to include a coral reef in progress inspired by a recent trip to Key West. Her artwork incorporates acrylic painting, glass, tile, and stone in her nautical and natural motifs, specializing in fins and feathers with the connecting link being the element of water.

In 2020, she started a second rehab project on the shores of Lake Huron of a cottage where she’s incorporating stones, shells and driftwood throughout the interior design. Brenda’s journey into the art world over the last 6 years started with the love of giving everything “second chances”, and how to find beauty in the brokenness and turn it into something fabulous.

Her studio/workshop is open by appointment only and located at 724 Cedar Street, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, two blocks from the famous Soo Locks.

Gypsy Distillery ~ Petoskey

For many years, The Bay Harbor Equestrian Center has been host to some of the most famous horse personnel in the country. Unfortunately, northern Michigan winters are not the best place for award winning horses, so the Equestrian Center began to sit vacant for many months out of the year. Therefore, the decision was made to put it up for sale in hopes that it would fall into some hands that would create something wonderful on the beautiful property.

When the Bay Harbor team took High Five to the Equestrian Center for the first time, everything just felt right. The High Five Team wasn’t just looking for a place to expand their distilling operation, but were looking for someplace special they could transform for the rest of their lives. After this began the hard work, transforming a 42,000 square foot building into a state-of-theart distillery, tasting room, cocktail garden, and event space. Relying on the help of a friend turned General Contractor, Bruce Houlmont the High Five Team began the build out of this must see attraction.

Cottage Pottery ~ Charlevoix

Cottage Pottery is “Paint Your own Pottery & Canvas” Art Studio located just 3 miles north of downtown Charlevoix. They are a full-service pottery and art studio, offering pottery classes, board art, clay, and canvas art classes throughout the season. Their studio is open year round for pottery to-go kits, instudio painting (by appointment only-prefer book 24 hour in advance) and off-site events with their “Traveling Studio” offering.

The pottery “to-go” kits are perfect for bridal showers, kids parties, girlfriend gatherings and more! The kit includes your choice of pottery, paint brushes, glaze or acrylic paints and step by step instructions. The creations can then be dropped off at the studio for glazing and picked up a couple of days later. Kits can also be ordered and paid for online on the Cottage Pottery website.

The studio is a wonderful place to host a party as well. Bring your group to pick out their own piece of pottery to paint and enjoy every moment of the process. Avalanche Preserve Recreation Area ~ Boyne City

There is no record of an avalanche ever barreling down Avalanche Peak into Boyne City, but the hill is incredibly steep—so steep that in the 1950s, it was a downhill ski area with rope tows and even a chairlift. Located on the southwest corner of the city, Avalanche Peak rises to 1023 feet or 439 feet above Lake Charlevoix to provide the most commanding view of any high point south of the Mackinac Bridge.

This towering ridge is the center piece of Avalanche Preserve Recreation Area, a 300acre Boyne City park that is predominantly a forested sloping terrain. The exception is its northern slope that was the site of a downhill ski operation beginning in the early 1950s. By 1958 the downhill had a 1500-foot poma lift and later a double chairlift before closing in the 1960s.

In the fall the hill is a favorite for leaf peepers who scale a 462-step stairway to a pair of observation decks near the top from which they can gaze down at Boyne City, practically all of Lake Charlevoix and even a sliver of Lake Michigan on a clear day. In the winter the park is renowned as one of the most thrilling sledding hills in northern Michigan.

Winding up and around the ridge is a 12-mile trail system that includes an 8.6-mile mountain bike system and a 2.8-mile hiking trail that is open to cross-country skiers and snowshoers. The park also features an 18-hole disc golf course with much of it laid out along the walking trails.

Needless to say, mountain biking and Nordic skiing at the park are rated challenging due to the extensive change in elevation experienced along both loops. Just climbing the stairway to the view at the top can be a workout for many people, however the view from the top is worth every step!
