Winter in northern Michigan is truly a locals’ season. Snowy forecasts, ice and frigid temperatures may sound unpleasant to non-residents of northern Michigan, but for those who live in the area, winter elements create opportunity for outdoor recreation that’s unlike any other time of the year. Whether you prefer to cozy up indoors near a fire or to plummet down a powder covered hill, feel like a local by taking full advantage of the splendor of winter.


Downhill Ski or Snowboard Northern Lower Michigan boasts well over 1,600 acres of skiable downhill slopes spread across more than 375 trails. Everything from expert chutes to beginner-friendly ski areas can be found here. Skiing and snowboarding can be a family affair with local resorts offering lessons for all skill levels and ages all season long. If you’re a non-skier, don’t worry! There’s always a hill nearby daring you to jump on your sled. Whether you prefer a traditional toboggan, a standard sled, a slippery saucer, or tubing at a resort, suit up and get outside - sledding and tubing is for all ages! Not to mention, for après ski, this area is second to none. Fun Fact: Petoskey is home to one of the oldest breweries still operating in the United States, Petoskey Brewing Company. Taste a Local Trail With more than 70 wineries and tasting rooms, and over 30 craft breweries and brewpubs, northern Lower Michigan is a great place to cozy up to a fire and enjoy a mitten-made beverage. Tour a wine trail or create your own beer flight for a fun day enjoying the snow from the indoors. Feeling adventurous? Take part in a snowshoe brewery tour, ice wine harvesting, Sib and Dab painting class, or one of the many winter craft drink festivals happening all winter long. Fun Fact: Traverse City was named in the “Top 10 Cities for Wine Snobs” by Travel Channel. (January 2017) Hop on a “Sled” Northern Michigan is a mecca for snowmobilers. With more than 140 miles of forested pathways that’ll take you through some of the area’s most breathtaking winter scenery, and one of the most extensive interconnected snowmobile trail systems in the nation, northern Michigan is truly a snowmobiling paradise. If you don’t have your own sled, don’t worry. There are many local businesses where you can rent one and the dealer will take care of the details for you! Pick up a map and point out your path and stops along the way.

Go Cross-Country Skiing, Snowshoeing or Fat Tire Biking “It’s all about the journey, not the destination” with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and fat tire biking. Northern Michigan offers nearly 300 miles of groomed and ungroomed trails specific to these foot powered sports which can be enjoyed in solitude or with company. Trek along the lakeshore or through wooded winter wonderlands! Explore the Night Sky Where the Straits of Mackinac sweep into the great lakes, you’ll find the Park that contains approximately 550 acres of pristine woodlands and more than two miles of undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline with marked nature trails that guide hikers, bicyclists, cross-country skiers, and nature photographers. In the darkness of the night, you will find the darkest of skies, undiluted by light pollution and preserved in perpetuity by Emmet County through the International Dark Sky Association. Free programs are offered year-round to help you learn about the sensational night sky, astronomy and celestial phenomenons like the Total Lunar Eclipse in January 2018. Fun Fact: Michigan ranks third in the nation in the number of Christmas trees harvested, supplying approximately 3 million fresh Christmas trees to the national market each year. Be a “Foodie” You’ll want to leave your belt behind and bring your stretchy pants when it comes to enjoying the culinary delights of northern Lower Michigan. The diverse flavors you experience in Michigan are as special as the places they come from. Bay Harbor has been described as the crown jewel of northern Michigan. Tucked along the lakeshore just to the south of Petoskey, Bay Harbor is a resort town with something for everyone. Outdoor enthusiasts flock to Boyne City year around to take advantage of everything from snowmobiling and skiing to camping and fishing. Consider Charlevoix in your northern Michigan search. Ideally positioned on the shores of Round Lake and Lake Michigan, those in search of relaxation and boating fun flock to Charlevoix. Downtown Charlevoix features boutique shopping, unique restaurants, and world class events set along Round Lake which connects to Lake Michigan below the historic drawbridge.
