WELCOME

TO THE SUMMER/FALL 2021 ISSUE OF RESIDE What an exciting time to be in real estate. Since the mandated lockdown was lifted last spring, our market has seen an explosion of activity...and it continues. With record low inventories, bidding on a home looks a little different than it did in years past. For sellers, it means getting multiple offers, and for buyers, they can’t “sleep on it” like they used to. This market means quick decision making, and more aggressive offers in order to get the “deal”. As trusted advisors, we have also had to adjust to changing market conditions. As real estate brokers we also know the importance of understanding our markets and negotiating for clients. This means getting the inside scoop on upcoming properties, or connecting sellers with buyers in a tight market. Now more than ever, you should be working with a trusted real estate agent. Our team is dedicated to their profession, and we work hard every day to ensure that we are delivering real time information to our clients. We have adapted to the changing environment as well. In 2020, virtual showings and Zoom meetings changed the way we do business. As I write this, we are beginning to see some restrictions being lifted, and we are all relieved for this. COVID-19 has surely changed many things in our lives, and where we live. For some people, the home has taken on a new meaning. They are not going back to the office and are now working remotely, which has also changed where they live and school their children. We will continue to see this growth in our communities in Northern Michigan in the years to come. If you are considering a move now or in the future, please contact us so we can assist in giving you the most updated market trends and conditions, and go to work on your behalf. The future is bright, let’s make it a great year.

Eric Lohman, Sales Associate Eric is the newest Sales Associate to our team, joining us in March, 2021. As a native to the Midwest, Eric’s family’s history of coming to Northern Michigan dates back to 1907, when his ancestors bought their first cottages on Sweet Pea Lane on Walloon Lake. No matter where Eric has lived over the years, he has always called Walloon his “constant”. As a 5th generationer, he has never missed a summer and for the last 10 years he has enjoyed all the seasons in the north. Eric and his wife Beth have recently relocated back to Michigan, where they currently live in Brighton with their two Labs, Brook and Caddis. Beth is the General Manager of Mt Brighton and Eric has now turned this opportunity to spend more time in northern Michigan, focusing on furthering his career in real estate. Eric began his real estate career in Vail, Colorado, selling both primary and vacation properties. His experience in selling high end primary and vacation homes is the perfect fit for the Sotheby’s Real Estate market. Eric’s knowledge of the market enables him to help in all aspects of purchasing and selling all types of properties, from the first time buyer to someone looking for the perfect vacation home.

When not selling real estate, you will most certainly find him enjoying one of the many activities that the area has to offer. Eric is an avid outdoorsman, with a passion for fly fishing, hunting, skiing, snowmobiling, riding his bike and of course, being on the water. His love for the water is second to none, you cannot keep him out of the water for too long during the summer, most of the time with his dogs in tow. If he isn’t on the lake, you will find him throwing a line in one of the great rivers this area has to offer. Eric has also been downhill skiing since he was four years old and when not skiing, you will find him enjoying all the great snowmobiling trails in Northern Michigan. With his new real estate career, he is looking forward to becoming more engaged with the community in the years to come. ...OF THE EXCEPTIONAL Brad Rellinger, Managing Broker My career in real estate started in 1993 when I first decided to get my license. At that time I was running the family dry cleaners and laundromat and decided to join my father who was a successful broker at Rellinger and Associates. We worked together for 16 years. In 2006, I obtained my brokers license and started my own brokerage named Ski and Shore Resort Properties in Walloon Lake Village in 2009. Looking back, it was a tough time to be starting a brokerage coming out of the market downturn in 2008 - 2010. After a couple years there I was recruited to Harbor Sotheby’s International Realty, which was formed in 2010. I readily joined in late 2010 as I was realizing the importance of being part of a larger real estate network and working with a larger team of dedicated agents. It was also around that time when I was able to help revitalize the Village of Walloon to what it is today. I was brokering the sale of most of the privately owned commercial properties in the village to the Borisch family who transformed the marina into what is Barrel Back and Tommies, and the public park that sits in the heart of the village today. In 2015 I was promoted to Managing Broker for Harbor Sotheby’s and continue to hold that position today. I have been fortunate to have worked with so many different people and experienced so many areas in Northern Michigan. I think one of the most interesting aspects of selling real estate is being able to see the many different and unique properties. My travels have included as far as a large family estate in Marquette on Lake Superior, trophy hunting properties that took hours to view, waterfront properties with two miles of shoreline, exquisite mansions never offered before, island properties accessed only by plane or boat, stunning boat houses that make your jaw drop and that’s just to name a few. I think my favorite properties however, are the modest cottages that have been owned by generations, where you can see the memories on the walls that were created over time, and now are being passed to a new generation. Every property has a story, and I feel fortunate every time to be able to share that story. I

I always spent time as a kid in Northern Michigan spending summers here working my first jobs. I moved here full time after college simply because I wanted this lifestyle. So many of the things I like to do I could do here. I started racing sailboats on the Great Lakes in the 1990s sailing regattas in Little Traverse Bay, and also participated in the Mackinac races for many years. I love to fish the rivers up here, mountain bike and kayak in the Pigeon River Forest.

I

I got married to Emily Heck in 2014 and we are raising a family of two wonderful girls Vivian and Fiona who are now four and six years old. My oldest daughter started Kindergarten this year at St. Francis and Fiona will finish up at Montessori before also attending St. Francis. My beautiful wife is a very talented hair stylist in Bay Harbor at Ilaria. My hobbies today are playing tennis, fishing, boating and family trips to Mackinac Island. I’m on the board of the Little Traverse Bay Ferry that started in 2020. We are very excited to be starting the second season with one season under our belt. My real estate career has always given me the flexibility to manage my time wisely and enjoy life. I couldn’t imagine a better place to do that than right here in Petoskey. We are very fortunate to live so close to where we both work. Last Christmas we added a new member to the family, “Boomer”, he’s a Red Fox Lab that the family has come to love and he is very patient and gentle with the kids. Brad is the Managing Broker for the Harbor Sotheby’s International Realty office in Bay Harbor and can be reached at 231 838 6055 or via email at brad@harborsir.com.

We teamed up with Lorenz & Company Architects and Falcon Custom Builders out of Grand Rapids, Michigan to come up with a spectacular home for this site. This home is appointed with a finished and conditioned 9000 square foot shingle style home that is both pure and timeless. Crowned with uncluttered, clean roof lines and provisions for a strong balance of natural materials in both masonry detailing and hand selected cedar shake from the Alaskan coastline. The property was a joy to design due to the remarkable shoreline frontage found both on the leeward side facing Bay Harbor Lake and the glorious windward side of open water views to Lake Michigan. info@LorenzAndCompany.com 616-389-9763 www.LorenzAndCompany.com

As you explore our design you will find the vast majority of both private and common spaces have captured this unique setting and the wondrous view to its fullest. The main level of this home gracefully offers spaces that maintain waterfront views on either side of the great room and are able to host both large gatherings and more intimate connections both of which are supported by an open kitchen concept and a catering kitchen with discreet service access. The complete owner’s suite can be cordoned from the gathering rooms to ensure privacy and is accented by a home office with a commanding view of Lake Michigan from the owner’s bedroom and the office. The stairs leading to the upper level take in a winding view of the harbor and pull in the natural light where you will pass an upper level laundry room and find yourself circulating the gallery that overlooks the gathering rooms of the main level and is connected to the four full suite bedrooms of the upper level. Two of which look out over Lake Michigan and two overlooking the activity of Bay Harbor Lake. The lower level provides a walk out and ample room to be designed to an owner’s preference be it exercise and sports or entertainment and media or both. This is a unique offering, let’s bring your personal touches and make it a reality.

W

elcome to the Village Village at Bay Harbor...Come Look At Us Now!

In 2017, an initiative was formed to try and bring back vibrancy in downtown Bay Harbor, “the Village”. The goal and DESIRED OUTCOMES were to: Re-establish a vibrant, growing Bay Harbor that draws in/welcomes Petoskey residents and area visitors, for our group of merchants and investors to thrive and advocate for Bay Harbor, and to be viewed as an extension of Petoskey’s walkable downtown. The group envisioned the “Main Street” approach to promote the Village at Bay Harbor as a vibrant business and leisure hub, providing unparalleled waterfront gathering places for all community members and visitors to shop, live, recreate, connect, eat and enjoy lasting lifestyle experiences. The team strives to promote the Village at Bay Harbor as a cultural and social center for the entire northern Michigan region. Just 4 years later – this vision has become a reality. In 2021, the Village spaces are 100% full, with seven new businesses that have opened in the past year. Not an easy task, when 2020 forced a shutdown for a few months and the world completely changed. It did not discourage some great new merchants to join us and complete an amazing little destination in northern Michigan. Chris Etienne, Leasing Director for the Village at Bay Harbor, along with the Bay Harbor Management Team have worked diligently to bring in some great new additions and secure the leases of our merchants who have been here for many years. The Grand Opening of the “Marina District” took place on July 3, 1999. This encompassed the then Bay Harbor Village Hotel and storefronts below; however, there were not yet leased out to stores, eateries and specialty services. The “originals” as we refer to them are still the anchors of what makes it so special. The Original Pancake House and KNOT Just a Bar have been here for the entire 22 years. The name Marina District did not fully represent what the public space would encompass, which led Bay Harbor five years later to title it “The Village at Bay Harbor”, with shopping, dining and lodging for all to enjoy. Many changes have happened throughout the years, adding annual public events such as the In-Water Boat Show, Vintage Car & Boat Festival, July 3rd Fireworks and July 4th GEM Car Parade and the Bay Harbor Arts Festival to draw the public down to Bay Harbor. These events have become iconic and visitors and the local communities alike have enjoyed the memories of attending the events with friends and family. Leasing opportunities arose and merchants signed on to be part of one of the most special and unique shopping districts in the country. Set along the stunning Little Traverse Bay, and the deep water marina of Bay Harbor Lake, the brick-paved streets were the idyllic setting for strolling through the Village shops and eateries along Main and Front streets, while watching the sunsets over the bay.

BAY HARBOR

Fast-forward to 2020, when even in the midst of one of the strangest years on record, 3 businesses opened their doors in the Village. Salvatore’s Grocer & Kitchen brought to the Village the “food-on-the-go” concept that is truly a staple for guests of Village Suites and vacation homes, as well as boaters and visitors alike. Their model is taken after the old corner grocers of yesteryear...an original spin on the times we all miss at our neighborhood grocery, everything from fresh steaks and chops, to Flatbread pizza, cold sandwiches, soda, beer and wine and even chips and candy bars. Mammoth Distilling moved in shortly after, a tasting room with specialty cocktails made exclusively from their craft spirits. Offering live music on the weekends, and trivia nights during the off-season, this year-round business has definitely brought a new energy to downtown Bay Harbor. CH Boutique, took over the former Amy Art space, after the gallery moved across the street for extra room. CH is a sweet little boutique with an eclectic mix of styles and finds for men, women and home. They are also the authorized dealer of Julie Vos Jewelry in northern Michigan. Near the end of 2020, and the beginning months of 2021, several other businesses also jumped in to be a part of the excitement and momentum in the Village. Chatham House Lifestyle Center, has spent many months redesigning their space, which is the most expansive in the Village. Chatham is custom high-end Interior Design Studio, Lifestyle Gallery & Verellen Showroom, and a fabulous anchor location directly across from the Marina. Local, the new waterfront restaurant will open June 2021, and the owners have been renovating the space for the past several months turning it into their own vision. A patio expansion was part of the remodeling, giving patrons the best seat in the house for watching the boats in the marina and the amazing Lake Michigan sunsets. SIP is a wine lounge which will also open in June 2021. They will offer an exclusive collection of wines that you can’t find anywhere else, by the glass, the bottle or the case. Charcuterie boards will also be available to enjoy while sipping your wine. Outdoor seating will spill out from the lounge space as well, bringing a great vibe to visitors in the Village. Also new in 2021, Walstrom Marine will showcase their Chris-Craft Design Center, the only one in the state of Michigan. One can customize their own Chris-Craft including choosing exterior and interior colors and fabric, and putting their own special hand-print on their new vessel. Falcon Custom Homes is also opening a design showroom of their own in the Summer of 2021. Based out of Grand Rapids, Michigan, they are currently building a one-of-a-kind home located on the Preserve in Bay Harbor. They will have a representative in the Village that will be on-hand to speak to you about your dream home.

It goes without saying, that we also have a wonderful and eclectic group of merchants that have been in Bay Harbor over the last few years, and collectively they are a part of what keeps the Village lively and unique. Our boutiques, J. Phillips, Rebecca’s Fashions, Tulips Little Pop-Up Shop, Tiny Tulips and the Bay Harbor Logo Store are all fun places to shop, and all with their own fashion and accessory styles. Ilaria Hair Studio features a very talented hair design team, who are some of the top stylists of northern Michigan, as well as a full line of hair products for purchase. C…Pilates is a modern and exclusive Pilates studio, offering classes that focus on stretching, coordination, gentle flow and a mind-body connection. From beginners to experts, and classes ranging from private, duets and on up to a full group. Candy Harbor is the place to cure your sweet tooth cravings with home-made ice cream, candy and truffles. The perfect place to grab a cone and walk the docks in the harbor. Amy Art Studio & Gallery is the inspiring art of Amy Moglia Heuerman, whose abstracts of sky and water that inspire here are a breathtaking visual. The gallery is light, airy and calming…a beautiful edition to Bay Harbor. Lake Michigan Yacht Sales has been in Bay Harbor for many years, and is the one-stop shop for boaters as a fully stocked ship-store and also a yacht dealer, offering an array of top of the line brands in the boating world. Erika’s Massage is located in the Bay Harbor Building, on the second floor with lovely views of Little Traverse Bay. They are a professional massage team that offers Swedish, Deep Tissue, Ashitsu and Couple’s Massage. Harbor Sotheby’s International Realty has both the Lifestyle Center in the Village, and an office in the Bay Harbor Building. Stop in to talk real estate, as they are the premier luxury full-service real estate provider of northern Michigan.

“Our long time businesses have been anxiously awaiting the 2021 season to get back to some normalcy. The new businesses coming into Bay Harbor this year have created new excitement and energy for the Village. They are making significant improvements to their spaces and we are confident will deliver the “wow” factor for our residents and guests.” ~ Chris Etienne, Leasing Director - Village at Bay Harbor In 2018, Great Lakes Center for the Arts opened and changed the face of the Bay Harbor downtown landscape. With a mission to inspire, entertain, educate and serve all in northern Michigan year-round by presenting exceptional experiences across the full spectrum of the performing arts and offering impactful educational opportunities, the Center is the region’s cultural and social hub. They have brought entertainers from all across the world to perform, and have brought a whole new level to the Bay Harbor culture. They also brought in the Dorothy Gerber Strings Program, a locally-based strings music education for area youth with instructors who are passionate about passing on their knowledge of music to new generations of students. The evolution of the Village has been over 20 years in the making. There is a new vibrancy and energy filling the streets, and the merchants are more excited about the upcoming year than ever before. The goal of having a full and enticing shopping and dining district with a mix of great boutiques, food and drink locations, entertainment and specialty services has come to fruition. If you haven’t checked out the Village lately…be sure to come see it now! harborsir.com | 25

Mammoth Distilling Capturing Northern Michigan in a Bottle

In 2013,

Mammoth Distilling was founded on a small plot of land next to Torch Lake with a vision of crafting world-class spirits from grains and ingredients cultivated from the local farms and producers of Northwest Michigan. Last summer they opened their fourth tasting room location in Bay Harbor (and soon after a fifth in Adrian), but you would be excused for not having paid them a visit quite yet. “Yeah, the timing wasn’t super awesome,” jokes Founder and CEO Chad Munger. “Opening not one, but two tasting rooms in the middle of the pandemic was challenging to say the least. But plans were well underway prior to the shut down and we just continued to see them through. We couldn’t be more excited to be part of the Bay Harbor community.” And Bay Harbor could not be happier to welcome them. Located in the downtown district, Mammoth Distilling’s Bay Harbor tasting room offers a relaxing space to enjoy cocktails, purchase spirits, or have your next private event. But other creative and unique offerings are sure to be well received.

30 | harborsir.com

Creating Truly Memorable Experiences “Our whiskey blending experience has already been a big hit,” continues Chad. “We pull five or six samples from the hundreds of barrels of whiskey in our rick house, and walk customers through a process to create a bottle of a one-of-a-kind blend that perfectly appeals to their personal taste.”

“To further embrace that philosophy,” Chad says, “the distillery has even started their own farming efforts.” “We started Mammoth Farms on Bellaire Highway a few years ago, and this summer we’re scaling up production of garnishes and botanicals there. But we’re even more excited about our South Manitou Island farm where we’ve partnered with the National Park Service and Michigan State University to bring back full scale production of heritage Rosen rye. In a few short years we’ll be able to distill almost exclusively from the grain grown from this seed.”

Capturing the Spirit of Northern Michigan From their network of five tasting rooms around Michigan, to the distillation of spirits hewn from local ingredients, to the unique finishing of curated world-class whiskies, Mammoth is a reflection of Northern Michigan in all their products and actions. Want made-to-order batched cocktail service for a day on the boat or an evening with guests at home? Mammoth can prepare to-go orders from their menu, craft something from a new recipe or even barrel-age a special cocktail for an upcoming event. “The hospitality side of our business is focused on delivering a truly memorable experience that’s far above people’s expectations, and being here allows us to expand our services throughout the Village and into Petoskey and Harbor Springs as well,” Chad explains. “We’re actively working to define opportunities with new partners in the area, from Boyne Highlands to the Little Traverse Bay Ferry, to the Lake Michigan Ballroom right here in our building.”

“We set out to capture the spirit of Northern Michigan in everything we do,” says Chad, chuckling slightly at the overused pun. “And we challenge ourselves to stay inspired by Northern Michigan as we grow. In the research and development of new products, in our economic decisions, in the style and techniques of our processes. That combination of hospitality, ingredients and our spirits help contribute the experience someone gets when they visit up north. What we’re doing here in the Northwest corner of Michigan can’t be replicated anywhere else. That’s what Mammoth is all about.”

Investing in the Local Farm Movement Mammoth products are created through the distillation of grains and other agriculture grown on local farms, and many of the botanicals used to make Mammoth Gin are also sourced locally. Even the mixers used to make cocktails in their tasting rooms contain many local ingredients, allowing them to become deeply rooted in the surrounding community. “Our grains are grown by Shooks Farms and malted by Empire Malt. Other inputs like maple syrup from Overlook Farms, lavender from Lavender Hill, or honey from Brownwood Acres are also locally sourced. But our commitment goes beyond just growing or buying things locally; we’re also in the process of growing our first crops of the native grains Nothstein corn and Rosen rye. We support the local farm movement, but we also subscribe to the ‘know what you grow’ movement too.”

Mammoth Distilling is at 4181 Main St. in Bay Harbor. You can reach the tasting room at 231.622.8776. The company operates other tasting rooms in Traverse City, Bellaire, Central Lake and Adrian. To learn more about all their northern inspired spirits, visit www.MammothDistilling.com or follow on social media at F: @MammothDistilling or I: @mammoth_distilling.

Walstrom Marine & Through the Years

W

hen Ward Walstrom Sr. purchased what was the former Melching Boatworks in downtown Harbor Springs in 1946, a coveted Chris Craft franchise was included in the sale. Walstrom Marine continued on as a Chris Craft dealer for many years thereafter until changes within the Chris Craft organization brought the relationship to an end. When the opportunity arose to sign on with Chris Craft in the late 2000s, Walstrom Marine jumped at the chance to become a Chris Craft dealer yet again. The late 1980s were tough on Chris Craft, and this continued into the 90s leading to several ownership changes. In 2001, British private equity firm Stellican Limited bought the company and embarked on an impressive re-branding of Chris Craft. In 2018 the company was sold to Winnebago Industries. Classic lines, modern engineering and construction techniques, and exceptional build quality are the hallmarks of today’s Chris Craft. The final product is truly considered a work of art. As Michigan’s premier Chris Craft dealer, Walstrom Marine is investing heavily in the Chris Craft brand – particularly in Bay Harbor. A recently remodeled showroom complete with new furniture, fresh paint,

and what will be Michigan’s first Chris Craft design center will be ready for summer 2021. Customers will be able to experience the quality of a Chris Craft first hand by selecting from a variety of hand-crafted interior fabrics, teak, stainless steel, and hull colors on display in the Walstrom Marine Bay Harbor showroom. Walstrom Marine’s Bay Harbor team of Dan Kimball and Hi Stover have long standing ties to Chris Craft, each having owned one themselves in the past. Both avid boaters, Dan and Hi are passionate about what they do. They are looking

forward to unveiling the new Chris Craft design center this summer. In addition to the new design center, Walstrom Marine has made a huge commitment to 2021 and beyond with Chris Craft. The company has more than 15 inventory boats on order for the 2022 model year alone. This includes the new Calypso 35, which is powered with triple Mercury Verado 350hp outboards. These two great companies steeped in tradition are looking forward to a bright future together in Bay Harbor and Northern Michigan.

Heidi Marshall by Parker Marshall Crooked Tree Arts Center’s annual event DART for ART will commence on July 14th and 15th (Wednesday and Thursday) at LOCAL in Bay Harbor. The event features works donated by artists to help fund CTAC’s mission for promoting the arts in northern Michigan. The 2-day extravaganza features a cocktail hour, a dinner prepared by local chefs, art auctions, exhibits, and a raffle-esque experience where tables are called by number and the guests rush to the wall to claim artworks to take home, hence the title “dart for art.” This year’s featured artist is Petoskey’s, Heidi Amenda Marshall—better known to me as Mom! Her work has received national and international recognition, exhibited over the past five years in: The National Arts Club (Pastel Society of America) New York, New York; The Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio; The Scarab Club, Detroit, Michigan and the Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenburg, Arizona. She has had solo shows at The University of Michigan and Lake Superior State University. Her work has also been featured in Plein Air Magazine, Pastel Journal, Southwest Art and Art of the West. As her son, it has been gratifying to see her receive recognition and critical acclaim from museums, publications, professional societies and particularly her peers. Her studio is a room of about 400 square feet in the lower level of her house with a large wall of windows facing the woods. In the center of the room stands a sizable metal table. An enormous wooden box sits on the table (about the size of four backgammon boards) filled with pigments as infinite as the color spectrum. These are her pastels and their arrangement is usually indicative of her productivity. Organized, with the colors matching and varying in hue and warmth means she is about to paint. Disorganized, means she has just painted something. I visually measure the box so as to determine her energy and whether or not to broach important conversations. 44

She usually paints in the ‘field’ or on location. En Plein Air is the term artists prefer. They say they can read more information by painting from life, as opposed to painting from a photograph. My mother feels the spirit of the landscape as a tangible thing—that melds with her vision to create something that is expressive, singular and alive. It’s a challenging way to paint. A landscape (light) changes quickly, as we Michiganders know, so the artist must be both quick and adaptive to successfully capture the essence of the landscape before it disappears. Her works hang beside her father’s in her studio. Her father was William “Bill” Amenda, chief editorial illustrator for the Detroit News from the 50s through the 80s. He also painted and introduced her to drawing and artistic appreciation. He taught her the beauty of painting en plein air at age seven. After graduating from college, with a double major in Fine Art and English Literature, she landed a successful career in advertising in Detroit, eventually becoming a senior writer for Saatchi & Saatchi and a group creative director for Young & Rubicam. A son rarely thinks of his mom as cool, but imagining her being a female Don Draper on car accounts in the 80s, it’s hard not to give her a little credit.

She left the glamorous life once I entered the scene, and I became first acquainted with her illustrative work consisting of dinosaur drawings included in my lunch box. I would wager they made me happier than if an art collector discovered an unknown Rembrandt. By 2002 she earned a master’s degree in English, and the earliest I can recall her becoming more serious about painting was in 2004. She studied life drawing and took many painting workshops and became very disciplined in her practice and study. We visited many museums in this period—and share an unusual stamina for time spent in them. Whenever she visits a city, she visits its museums. She has been asked to leave more than one museum. There was the time she studied Albrecht Durer’s “Night, Death and the Devil” at the Toledo Museum of Art. Apparently she got too close—intent to study and sketch the work. An over-zealous docent reprimanded her and asked her to step back. Words flew back and forth. The docent stepped away. There was the other time she was at the MFA in Boston with my Godmother. This time the object of art was an exquisite bronze they were compelled to touch. Alarms went off and they were quickly escorted out of the room. I could go on.

A landscape (light) changes quickly, as we Michiganders know, so the artist must be both quick and adaptive to successfully capture the essence of the landscape before it disappears. Many people think the ability to paint well is just something gifted at birth. Having watched her work evolve, I can tell you it is not. She has shared with me and I have observed the struggles that accompany a life in the arts. First, there are hours….years of study. Often times people come up to her while she’s painting and say things like, “I couldn’t draw a stick figure.” While on the surface this sounds like a compliment, it negates the fact that it is something that takes great discipline and devotion. In response, I’ve heard her say—“would you expect to play a violin right away?” As she became more successful there were a few jealousies that were completely unexpected. You can see this play out in the history of art, but she wasn’t ready for it and I know it caused some sadness. You need to develop a thick skin as an artist and believe in yourself and what you do and just press on. Plein air painting involves its own unique challenges. I’ve witnessed her coated in ice after painting in 10-degree weather, and heard stories of creepy people asking questions or lingering near. To avoid this, some paint with a group, others carry guns. Part of the process involves being alone with nature, and that occasionally includes bears and other wildlife. Heidi Marshall will have solo shows at Crooked Tree Arts Center and at Three Pines Studio this summer. Her work is also represented at Sage Creek Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. 45

Crooked Tree Breadworks Crooked Tree Breadworks was established in 1996, a time when there were not a lot of artisan markets or bakeries in the area. They made a name for themselves quickly and their commitment to traditional, time intensive baking methods have not wavered since their inception. They pride themselves in the fact that they always use firstrate ingredients and don’t take shortcuts. Their sour dough breads are very popular, as they offer a variety of flavors such as Rosemary Olive and Pepper Parmesan. However, if you come with a sweet tooth, you will not be disappointed. The bakery consists of delicious muffins (try the Banana Crumb), cookies from Granola to Chocolate Chunk, wonderful scones and apple and cherry turnovers. Located in the Clock Tower Plaza, on M-119, Crooked Tree Breadworks is a place to stop in and pick up some of the freshest and best breads in the area. What a difference a BLT tastes on one of these amazing loafs of bread. Something you will want to share with family and friends alike this summer season! They also will have you coming back for more to buy their hand-made Addictive Granola, made with toasted nuts, dried cherries, raisins, local maple syrup, and honey. It’s so fabulous, you can eat it right out of a bowl. Also the perfect complement to your favorite yogurt. Crooked Tree Breadworks also offers A Bread of the Month Club, which means you can have artisan breads delivered to your doorstep every month. You can choose your membership level at 3, 6, or 12 month and if you would like one or two loaves sent to you. Each membership also includes a hand stamped bread linen from Three Pines Studio in Cross Village, Michigan. For more information on how to sign up, visit their website at breadworks.com. Little Traverse Bay Ferry The Little Traverse Bay Ferry is back “for another round” in 2021, which is very exciting news. Launching last year during a pandemic was not easy, but the ferry still weathered that storm and served up 7,200 passengers during the season. Bay Harbor Lake Marina will once again be the ferry’s home port, with schedules throughout the day to Petoskey and Harbor Springs. Their mission is to revive northern Michigan traditions to provide unique travel and educational experiences for all ages while connecting and promoting our lakeside communities. A passenger ferry hasn’t been in operation on Little Traverse Bay in over 80 years, and they are truly excited to recreate and offer this service back to the local communities. Riding the Ferry provides a unique transportation experience. They will run the boat 7 days a week and the official tickets sales for the season start on June 15, and they hope to keep the ferry in the water for as long as the weather allows. This summer, they will not be scheduling rides on Saturday evenings, and will instead open it up for private charters and sunset cruises (weather permitting). Food and drinks are allowed on the ferry as well, which makes this a fun new adventure out on beautiful Little Traverse Bay to spend with family and friends.

Reservations are strongly encouraged, and can be purchased on their website: littletraversebayferry.org. Please note that they will take passengers that have not reserved a seat in advance, but they only accept payment by card or via your smart phone. Bikes are also allowed on the ferry, but be sure to note that when you are buying your ticket online to reserve space for your bike as well. Pets are also allowed, as long as they are on a leash. The Ferry also has non-alcoholic drinks and chips on board for sale for a little snack as you cruise across the water. The Little Traverse Bay Ferry Foundation, a non-profit, 501(c)3 entity, is a welcomed addition to the community utilizing the beautiful bay as a community space and uniting the ports of Petoskey, Bay Harbor and Harbor Springs. Donating helps cover these expenses to keep the Little Traverse Bay Ferry on the bay the proper way, and positively impact the community. For more information, and on how you can donate, visit their website at littletraversebayferry.org.

The Young Americans Dinner Theatre In 1962 Milton Anderson, a Musical Director for CBS Television founded The Young Americans, a charitable organization dedicated to the promotion of understanding and goodwill among people throughout the world through music, dance, performance, academic education, and cultural interaction among Student Members and their audiences. They became the world’s first “show choir”, and their success has become legendary. They have come to exemplify all that is good in the youth of America. By 1965, they had performed on a variety of TV shows and specials including a Bing Crosby Special, The Johnny Carson Show and Ed Sullivan. In 1978, the Executive Director of the Young Americans, Bill Brawley led his first lead project by offering a dinner theatre at Boyne Highlands in Harbor Springs. He had been a part of the group since he was 18 years old. It is now the 2nd longest running Dinnter Theatre in the country. With performances that run from mid-June to the end of August, for 6 days a week; (Sundays are their much needed break and day off to rest and rejuvenate), the high energy group of young ladies and gentlemen are a “not to miss” evening out for friends and family. Ranging from Broadway tunes, to Disney Classics to tap, ballet, jazz, music ensembles and everything in-between, you will not be able to take your eyes and ears off these groups of talented performing artists. Not only do they entertain you on stage, they are also your servers for dinner - as they introduce your rolls, salad and dessert in song. They also make sure there is a little competition between them by groups and tables. You will not be able to get through the night without tapping your feet, or singing along to some of your favorites. And, it’s possible you will also get called up on stage or get called out for having a birthday, anniversary or special announcement. Pick your date and make your reservation for the Young Americans Dinner Theatre in Boyne Highlands this summer. You will most definitely come back to enjoy this fabulous evening year after year. Farmers Markets:

Get Organic. Support Local.

T

he best time of the year to check out the local Farmer’s Markets in northern Michigan is during the summer and fall season. There is a true abundance of local farmers in our area who offer locally-grown items including seasonal fruits and vegetables, preserves and baked goods, honey, maple syrup, grass-fed organic meats, poultry and fish, eggs, cut flowers, perennials and annuals and so much more. There is something very surreal and satisfying strolling through the Farmers Markets, with a produce bag and enjoying the very freshest of produce that will taste just perfect in that salad that will be whipped up with dinner. Running into neighbors with a quick hello, and talking to a local farmer about the difference in yellow, green and red tomatoes. It’s truly a lesson in farming and growing. The Boyne City Farmers Market has become a tradition, with 2 markets held throughout the summer/ fall season, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, on the lawn in Veterans Park. It takes quite some time to wind through all the many booths of offerings and is the perfect morning routine, coffee in hand and hand-picking a wildflower bouquet or a Cherry pie for dessert. One of the favorites that normally has a substantial line is Gilda’s Lake Street Bakery’s “Crepe Station”, who creates the delicacies in front of your eyes, and serves it warm as a nice treat to take around with you. In Harbor Springs, the market is also held on Wednesdays and Saturdays during the season, located downtown Main Street from 9am – 1pm. It’s a gathering spot, dotted with dogs on leashes and friendly hellos…a true small town feel-good experience. You can also find some of our finest northern Michigan farmers at the market. Charlevoix’s Farmer Market is held in the downtown location as well on Thursday mornings. It’s a local favorite, featuring everything from house-made spices and sauces to fresh baked bread and cinnamon rolls. Of course, they also offer organic fruits and vegetables as the season dictates. Petoskey’s Downtown Farmer Market is a small gathering on Howard Street on Friday mornings. It’s an intimate setting and great place to run in and grab your favorite produce or fresh cut flowers. The Old Town Emmet Farm Market is also in full swing in Petoskey on Saturday mornings on Emmet Street. Four days a week – enjoy one of our amazing Farmers Markets in northern Michigan. Each with a charm and fun atmosphere all of their own. Get Organic and Support Local this season!
