Petoskey Pierhead Lighthouse Photo Credit: Joe Keller, Cross Village Amateur Photography Contest Winner Bio: “ I am a lifelong resident of beautiful Northern Michigan having grown up in Cross Village. I have always had a great appreciation for the beauty that our area holds. From the colorful sunrises and sunsets over our many beautiful lakes, to the splendor that the autumn season brings every year. Ever since I was young, I have always had a camera by my side, hoping to catch that unexpected surprise. Some of my favorite subjects include all wildlife, flowers, the aforementioned sunrises and sunsets, and the reflections mirrored on puddles. If I could, I would be shooting from daybreak to dusk, capturing all of the wonderful sights that this area presents. “

BAY HARBOR

Celebrating 25 years, this unique resort community that was built through an incredible vision along five miles of Lake Michigan shoreline is still going strong. The concept was unimaginable - 26 neighborhoods, a deep water marina, Yacht Club, awardwinning golf courses, boutique hotel and a brick-paved village with shopping and dining. Tucked between the towns of Petoskey and Charlevoix, it has created a legacy known for festive events and as a spectacular visitor and wedding destination. Many families that were part of Bay Harbor back in 1994 are still here, and have handed down their love for the community to the next generation. Whether you enjoy living along the rolling fairways of the Bay Harbor Golf Course, living waterfront on Bay Harbor Lake or Lake Michigan, enjoying the amenities within walking distance to the Village or the tranquil and serene setting in wooded areas, you are sure to find the perfect property in Bay Harbor. They truly do have a neighborhood that will fit your every mood. Bay Harbor has no signs of slowing down with the great addition of the Great Lakes Center for the Arts, opened in July 2018 which features amazing performers from across the country all year long. The Bay Harbor Yacht Club has also recently announced a multimillion dollar expansion and the Village Hotel is launching a new vacation home rental program sure to bring more people to enjoy all that Bay Harbor has to offer.

Casual Sophistication

3970 Peninsula Drive, Bay Harbor F

rom an inconvenient floor plan to an open space that literally glows, this waterside Bay Harbor remodel illustrates how getting the footprint right can make all the difference in a new kitchen. Originally, an inconvenientlyplaced kitchen entrance disrupted the flow. To reconfigure the space and improve functionality, the door was repositioned, allowing easy access for incoming groceries and for the creation of an expanded L-shaped surface. A second challenge involved the seating area: the owner wanted comfortable, casual dining with a view of the entire space. The solution was to construct a generous, light-emitting bay window with curved bench seating fronted by a handcrafted curved walnut table. The built-in seating also met the owner’s request for television viewing, cleverly installed in the island end panel. The granite peninsula offers 42” high bar stool seating and creates a kitchen and living area division. The overall effect is that of a great room, delineated for tasks and relaxation. Overall style is understated eclecticism—a mix of cottage-comfort, elegant lines, and shiny surfaces. The focal point is the range wall; antiqued mirror tiles form a backdrop for the stainless range hood with steel matte black accents. Pendant lights encased in black repeat the theme. The massive island, supported by corner pilasters, is topped with opaque Iceberg granite, cleverly lit from beneath for an elegant nighttime glow. Finally, horizontal shiplap on the ceiling and peninsula combine with rich tones of wide walnut flooring, giving a sophisticated, yet inviting look. “The house just feels bright and comfortable,” says Denny Brya of Lakeview Builders who was instrumental in renovating the lovely peninsula home. During the remodel, one goal was to provide as many windows as possible, bringing light and those amazing water views from almost every room. The palette of the home is calming, with a mix of white and light neutrals which accents the dark grain of the walnut floor on the main level. It’s the perfect blend of a northern Michigan cottage and cozy feel, combined with a chic modern design. The exterior of the home was also completely renovated, including decorative cupolas, an arched entrance, and adding a courtyard entry to the 3-car garage. A cedar shake roof was also added to give it that lake home appeal. The finished product was a comfortable, yet elegant home that will be the perfect dream location for someone looking for their little piece of heaven on earth.

RISING STAR UP-AND-COMER

AWARD-WINNING DESIGNER

Kelly Konoske

Cottage Company Interiors

Named “Michigan’s Rising Star” by Detroit Home Magazine

Kelly Konoske This year’s Brian Killian Rising Star competition winner takes her design cues from Mother Nature’s splendid northern Michigan palette By Megan Swoyer

A STAR IS BORN Fresh, crisp, and beachy are the signature features of interior designer Kelly Konoske’s projects. Konoske, above left, is the 2019 Detroit Home Design Awards Rising Star!

W H E N K E L LY K O N O S K E W A S A young girl, she’d sit at her family’s kitchen table with her dad, builder Rob Mossburg, and sketch houses. “I grew up around building and design,” says our Brian Killian Rising Star and president of Cottage Company Interiors. Cottage Company Interiors is a design firm and a sister business of The Cottage Company, which offers construction and remodeling services. Both of her parents, Rob and Vee, work at the Harbor Springs-based firms (as do her grandfather, aunt, and husband), but in the past year, Konoske took over the reins of the interior design component from her moth-

er, who now occasionally does design work for spec homes. Her new title is a position Konoske has been working toward since joining the firm six years ago, when she left behind a job in marketing in Los Angeles to return to Michigan. The challenge was convincing her husband, a native Californian, to do the same. Konoske, who was born in California, grew up in Kansas, and spent summers in northern Michigan, says that as a designer she gets to exercise both sides of her brain (she has a business degree from Pepperdine University and a master’s of business from Chapman University). She’s also taken courses from a UCLA extension program toward a master’s

degree in interior design/architecture. “Nature’s beauty is found everywhere I look,” says Konoske, who weaves those observations into her designs. The result is beautiful spaces that call to mind a Michigan beach on a pretty summer’s day. Fresh, light, textured, and comfortable are the hallmarks of this upand-comer, who’s also green-certified. This summer, Konoske will reveal a private label furniture line called Cottage By Kelly. Her furnishings will, naturally, evoke a coastal feel; lakes, bluffs, dunes, and beaches inspire this new casual-but-elegant line, all within the cottage aesthetic. “It’s comfort with high design,” she says.

Spotlight Artist

Elizabeth Pollie

Elizabeth Pollie grew up surrounded by the love of art and architecture from her father. As a child, she would spend Saturdays in art rooms connected to museums and study the many art exhibits. She earned her BFA from The College For Creative Studies in Detroit where she later taught. Her interests led her into the field of editorial illustration. The transition from illustration to fine art was not a difficult one for Elizabeth. She claims it was truly no effort at all. She made the move to northern Michigan after her teaching career, which actually helped her painting style because there was so much less distraction and she became very inspired by her surroundings. Her day to day is simple and cherished. She feels lucky to get up in the morning and look out over Lake Michigan. She may stop to say hello to a group of cows that she passes along her drive just because it truly makes her happy. She may have lunch with her husband, and finally when she finds herself in front of the easel she can stay there unrushed and create. “I think that all artistic evolution is a form of response to a combination of personal history and experience, current conditions, and ongoing stimuli. In truth, I sometimes feel more at the mercy of this process than assuming that I am behind the wheel.” Elizabeth’s paintings are a true reflection of her personality which she describes as slightly unpredictable. “There are many impersonal ways of defining art. Francis Bacon said, “The job of the artist is to deepen the mystery”. She feels it involves creating something that when offered to the world somehow enlivens the senses. Her restless spirit is reflected in her artwork, capturing the very essence of her subjects. It is all in the interpretation of what she sees in front of her. She doesn’t select subjects based on popularity, instead she just allows herself to paint whatever intrigues her.

“Whether I am painting animals or broad expanses of water and land, my wish is that my work has a quality of sincerity woven into it. The overall direction is toward mystery, solitude and intimacy. ” 50 | harborsothebysrealty.com

You might notice a connection with animals in Elizabeth’s paintings. As a child, she was the girl who brought home every stray, and had a bedroom filled with stuffed animals, all named personally. She also dreamed of having a house full of cats and dogs. She has a deep and profound love for the animal world. There is a feeling she can’t quite describe when she stands and simply watches them. When she paints them, she begins by looking at them as a shape among shapes. As the painting develops the mood of the piece begins to come forward. With hope, nuances and layers that might describe her connection to them are woven into the initial structure. It’s more than just a painting of a cow, it’s actually the whole essence of how the atmosphere blends with them, the beauty shines through and it becomes something much deeper. When painting her subject matter, she focuses on three things; design, light and mood. Her paintings generally stay within eight or nine colors, blending and harmonizing with one another beautifully. She believes the human brain needs very few visual clues to piece something together, and that there is more power in what is left out of the artwork versus what is included. Finding that proper balance in painting can be greatly challenging, however those small distinctions can have a great impact on the end piece. Elizabeth has received many notable designations including being a Master Signature Member of American Women Artists and Signature member of Oil Painters Of America. She has also won many awards throughout the years for her work that is displayed on her website. She displays her art at her studio Elizabeth Pollie Fine Art located on Main Street in Harbor Springs. She is also represented at other galleries including RS Hanna Gallery in Texas, Horton Hayes Fine Art in South Carolina, Kneeland Gallery in Ketchum, Idaho and Mackinac’s Little Gallery on Mackinac Island. “A successful representational painting transcends technique and gimmickry, eliciting from the viewer a sense of connection with the truer nature of the subject. In the best of these works we are taken, almost unwittingly, into the heart of the painting. Here we feel, down to the bone, the more intrinsic qualities of a scene; be they lovely or disturbing, either way we are mesmerized. If we are very lucky our own hearts are broken open.” harborsothebysrealty.com | 51

Brian Bates and his wife Anne started farming in 2014, just 5 short years ago...and what they achieved is nothing short of amazing. Their farm is self-sustaining by operating a 30-panel Solar Array on the farm that produces 10 kw of renewable electricity for the farm. They also use passive solar hoophouses to produce local leafy greens and salad greens 52 weeks a year, even in the frigid winter temperatures in northern Michigan. At peak, they harvest about 100-120lbs of Spring Mix twice a week. You can find them at the Petoskey and Boyne City Farmers Markets weekly as well as several grocery stores including Grain Train Natural Foods and Toski Sands. Their products are also in many restaurants from Harbor Springs to Traverse City and even shipped to a couple in the Detroit area. Memberships for the farm are available to receive exclusive discounts on products, early access to plant sales and a great reusable shopping bag to use when you shop. bearcreekorganicfarm.com

FI Camp Daggett Located on the west arm of Walloon Lake, with 1,400 feet of waterfront, Camp Daggett has been one of the most talked about youth camps in the state for generations. The camp was founded in 1925 by Walter J. “Mac” MacMillan, a Petoskey resident and physical education teacher at Petoskey High School. Part of his duties as teacher was to run a boys summer camping program, which he started in other locations on the lake. In 1925, Camp Daggett officially opened in the present day location on a 43 acre parcel which was donated by the Daggett Family. Henry Daggett was a local hardware store owner in Petoskey who would bring his Sunday School classes to the property in the late 1890s. He believed “the children in a community are its richest assets, and its future depends upon the influencing of their lives for good.” That sentiment is still alive and well today, and almost 100 years later is in full operational mode, including year-round events and activities that take place at the camp. Summer Camps are so popular, long waiting lists are still very common. The one-week coed camping sessions start in mid-June and end in mid-August. Housed in rustic little cabins, there are endless adventures during their camp experience including ropes courses, kayaking, swimming, hiking, sailing, canoeing, arts & crafts and many other sporting activities. There are also year-round events held at Camp Daggett including torchlit snowshoeing during winter evenings, Mother-Daughter and Father-Son weekends and many fundraising events for this amazing non-profit camp that has benefited several thousand kids, with many more years to come. campdaggett.org

Northern Michigan Equine Therapy by Carolyne Stolzenfels Tucked on a quiet hillside, ten minutes south of Bay Harbor is a place of healing, hardwork and dedication. Northern Michigan Equine Therapy a 501(c)3 nonprofit has been healing humans with their unique approach of using horses as their most important therapeutic tool since 2011. Founded by Courtney Sumpter an Occupational Therapist, NMET, as it is called by the locals, is the most unique outpatient rehabilitation center this side of Lake Michigan. Courtney Angell Sumpter is one resilient, dedicated individual. She has taken an idea and created something incredible out of nothing, all with the determination and spunk that only Courtney could possess for the work that she loves. She uses her horses to help hundreds of individuals that come to the center requiring therapy for physical, emotional, and mental health needs. It all started with a colleague at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital, asking her about the experience she had at the Cheff Center in Augusta, Michigan where she worked while going to school at Western Michigan University. She explained to the doctor what Hippotherapy was: a form of therapy using a horse’s movement as the main therapeutic apparatus. “It’s not magic,” she said. “It’s merely science.” A horse’s body has a rhythmic movement while walking that mimics the same movement humans have while walking. When a person sits on top of a horse and the horse walks at a rhythmic, consistent speed, it fires the brain on all cylinders in a way that no other piece of therapy equipment can reproduce. After realizing how beneficial this type of therapy was for someone, that doctor asked if Courtney could work with his son who has Autism. After only a couple of sessions, everyone saw the difference in the child. He was able to focus and concentrate more easily and he wasn’t experiencing the severe anxiety of new stimulus in his environment. A miracle some would say, but to Courtney, it’s just what she does. Being an Occupational Therapist is a selfless career that requires patience and countless hours of seeing little progress only to be blown away by the tiniest breakthrough. Their goal is to enable and encourage a person to participate in daily life despite impairments or limitations in physical or mental functioning. An Occupational Therapist is one of those careers that is extremely medical, and yet you are healing a person’s spirit as well. Thankfully, Courtney has a herd of therapy horses to help her with this amazing feat. Last year, together they provided 969 therapy sessions to over 220 children and adults who needed therapy in our community. It’s not everyday we get to hear about such individuals like Courtney. Courtney’s program is unique in the fact that it is a horse farm, but its mission is to heal people the same as any other rehabilitation center. Northern Michigan is fortunate to have such a place of healing to offer to the community. Hats off to all the staff at Northern Michigan Equine Therapy for helping those heal who couldn’t heal themselves. nmequine.org

Wildwood Rush Established in 2011, Wildwood Rush sought to bring a new level of adventure to Northern Michigan. Located on 50 beautiful acres of land just outside of Boyne City, Wildwood Rush is able to give participants a different perspective on what makes our area so special. Local owners Todd Wright and Andre Poineau were able to put their heads together and come up with a sustainable recreation idea that utilized their vacant property that was originally purchased as an investment in 2005. Both long time outdoor enthusiasts, talented home designers and craftsman, Todd and Andy had more than the tools necessary to design and build an incredible zip line course. Fly through the forest canopy on over 7,000 feet of zip lines, cross five suspended sky bridges, and enjoy the amazing views of Lake Charlevoix from the six tree-top platforms. The Wildwood Rush guides provide an entertaining commentary on the local ecosystem and area history that is sure to be the highlight of your visit. And if you are the competitive type, Photos from Wildwood Rush FB bring a couple of friends for the 1,200-foot triple racing zip line. With three parallel lines, and speeds of over 40 miles per hour, it’s the only one of its kind in the Midwest! wildwoodrush.com

FI Earl Young Mushroom House Tours When in Charlevoix, make a point of seeing the architectural collection of self-taught builder Earl Young. Starting in 1919, and continuing into the seventies, Young fashioned over two dozen creations using indigenous materials. Over the course of his fifty-year career, Young built 26 residential houses and four commercial properties including The Weathervane Restaurant and Terrace Inn. His works are made mostly of stone, using limestone, fieldstone, and boulders that he found throughout Northern Michigan. Each of these homes was designed to blend in with its surrounding landscape. They all feature his signature designs, along with wide, wavy eaves, exposed rafter tails; cedar-shake roofs; and a horizontal emphasis in design. Tens of thousands of visitors each year marvel at unique stone dwellings and businesses of Earl Young, who was never a registered architect. The Charlevoix Historical Society conducts tours throughout Charlevoix’s hot spots, including the Earl Young architecture that last one to two hours in length. There is also a 50 minute tour offered by GEM Car which was voted “#1 Thing To Do” in Charlevoix by Trip Advisor. You can also do your own self-guided tour of these unique structures by picking up a map at the Visitors Center on Mason Street in downtown Charlevoix.

This is how we roll..... Ride, walk or roll along the spectacular scenic trailways in northern Michigan

Beginning in early 1994 and into the spring of 1995 Horace “Huffy” Huffman and Tom Bailey (both of the Little Traverse Conservancy) discussed the concept and need for a vehicle to coordinate and bring together numerous trail user groups in Emmet, Charlevoix and Cheboygan counties. Huffman and Bailey recognized a lack of overall coordination, direction and planning of recreational trail activity in Northern Lower Michigan to meet the demands of an expanding population and the rapid growth of tourism to the area. Thanks to the hard work of these two gentlemen who also formed a Board of Directors and worked tirelessly for funding their vision, we have over 300 miles of trails stretching from Charlevoix to Alpena, and from Lake Michigan to Lake Huron! There are even more trails planned to expand the ever-growing need for people in northern Michigan to enjoy the beautiful scenery including woodlands and water views around every bend. The Top of Michigan Trails Council has a mission which is “to advocate for and facilitate the development and maintenance of a safe, multi-use, year-round recreational trail system in Northern Michigan; and to promote the maintenance and use of these trails for the benefit of all.” The Little Traverse Wheelway, or the “Bike Path”, as it is locally called, runs 26 miles from Charlevoix to Harbor Springs in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties. The trail is mostly dedicated and paved in asphalt. It is currently the best developed and most suburban of our trunk line trails. The part between Petoskey’s Bayfront Park to Petoskey State Park follows closely the path of the original Little Traverse Wheelway that stretched from Petoskey to Harbor Springs in the 1880s and ‘90s. A gate over the trail at the east end of Bayfront Park proclaims “No Teaming or Driving,” and replicates the original gate that stood at nearly the same spot. This gate is a reminder of a time when people were prohibited from riding horses or horse-drawn carriages on the trail. Two other identical gates have been built to the west on Petoskey’s portion of the trail. In late 2008 construction was completed on the 1.4 mile “Resort Bluffs” segment between East Park in Bay Harbor and Magnus Park in Petoskey. This new trail replaces the “road shoulder “segment that had forced users to ride along US 31. It is a fabulous section of the trail, known as “the Miracle Mile.”

“Trail-to-rail-to-trail” describes the background of the Little Traverse Wheelway in this historic resort getaway. A section of trail dates to the 1880s when high-wheeled penny farthings were a popular, though risky, form of recreation and transportation. The Chicago and West Michigan Railway and the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad adopted the corridor for rail traffic in the 1890s, but by the 1970s the surviving railroads were no longer using segments of rail bed. By the 1990s, the first 2-mile section of reclaimed trail opened in Petoskey with more to follow until 2009. from: traillink.com photo courtesy of Latitude 45 76 | harborsothebysrealty.com

The Top of Michigan Trails Council oversees about 288 miles of existing or soon-to-be constructed trails. About 180 of these trail miles run along old railroad corridors. TOMTC “Trunk Line” Trails are non-motorized (except for snowmobiles) multi-purpose trails that can ordinarily be used for running, hiking, bicycling, in-line skating, snowmobiling, and equestrian activities. Except where noted, the trails are “dedicated,” that is they do not share the right of way with automobiles, motorcycles etc. There are some segments where snowmobiles and horses are prohibited and others where activities such as in-line skating and road bicycling are impractical because of the rough trail surface.

Mackinac Island Trail: The Mackinac Island coastal pathway around the perimeter, offering breathtaking views of Lake Huron, dramatic limestone bluffs and colorful wildflowers in the spring and summer. The trail is actually State Highway 185, the only such highway in the country that doesn’t allow motorized vehicles. In fact, the entire island is car free, so expect to see heavy traffic by walkers, bikers and horse-drawn carriages along the way. Inline skates are also allowed everywhere except the downtown area. Northwestern Trail: The North Western State Trail—formerly known as the Petoskey to Mackinaw Trail after its endpoints—passes through many communities along the way, including Conway, Oden, Ponshewaing, Brutus, Pellston, Van, Levering, and Carp Lake. In 2018, the scenic route was recognized with a National Recreation Trail designation. Carp Lake and Mackinaw City on the north end are especially suitable as staging areas for off-trail excursions onto lightly traveled local (paved and gravel) roads. The northern trailhead in Mackinaw City also serves the North Central State Trail, which extends south 62 miles to Gaylord, meeting the 71-mile North Eastern State Trail along the way in Cheboygan. Near the North Western State Trail’s southern end at Spring Lake Park in Petoskey, you can hop across State Route 119 to pick up the Little Traverse Wheelway. The paved 26-mile rail-trail extends north to Harbor Springs and south to Charlevoix.

Information for this feature were provided by Top of Michigan Trails Coucil and Rails to Trails Conservancy. For more information on biking and hiking trails in northern Michigan, and to download trail maps, visit Top of the Michigan Trails Council at trailscouncil.org or Rails to Trails Conservancy at traillink.com.

Boyne City

Nestled along Lake Charlevoix, Boyne City is a gem in Northern Michigan’s crown of jewels. This growing, and charming “Main Street” city has great events all year long including the infamous Stroll the Streets on Friday evenings in the summer, and Boyne Thunder in July. They also have a wonderful array of shops and two blocks of tasty dining options, including (3) brew pubs, a wine bar and a spirits tasting room. The Farmers Market in Boyne City is year-long, but in the summer months is a bi-weekly event that is one of the very best the area has to offer of fresh produce, sweet treats, wildflowers and plants, arts and crafts, food trucks and more! In the winter months, Boyne Mountain comes alive with skiiers and snowboarders and during the summer months the golfers have two great courses to choose from as well. Lake Charlevoix has been named one of the ten best inland lakes in the country, and if you spend any time out on the water, you will definitely understand why. photo courtesy of Petoskey Area CVB

Beaver Island

A land of secret places and friendly faces Beaver Island is a place of pristine wilderness and lakeshore, infused with freshwater lakes and breathtaking views from dunes and bluffs and roadsides. It is a place of solitude, peace and silence filled only with sounds of nature’s abundance on wings of eagles and swans, crickets, nightjars and loons. It is a quiet land where one walks among ancient forests, sentinel cedars, pines and ironwood trees with gnarled and curved arms welcoming visitors and residents, holding a rich history of Native American, Irish and Mormon founders in their arms.

Beaver Island is a land of secret places on isolated beaches and trails where you can walk alone or with family and friends in safety and tranquility. Oftentimes, you can walk, cycle, jog or drive without seeing another person for miles. At Barney’s Lake Nature preserve, nesting birds travel and cry out. Chirping birds, the slap of a beaver’s tail, a chortle of cranes or chittering’s of eagles can be heard in the air. Just getting to Beaver Island is a magical journey. Crossing 32 miles of Lake Michigan on the Emerald Isle Ferry takes a little over two hours. You can also take a 15-minute plane ride over blue waters and an archipelago of seven or more islands. You will be transported to an airport in a field on a gravel road, or onto a dock near the beach into a quaint and charming harbor town. It is tradition to go straight to the Whiskey Point Lighthouse and considered by some to be bad luck if you don’t go there upon arrival. Another ancient lighthouse sits atop a beachside bluff on the southern tip of the island, Beaver Head Lighthouse where the tower can be climbed for magnificent views of Lake Michigan. The small town of St. James on Paradise Bay has two marinas, a gas station, lodging and private homes, several restaurants and bars, a grocery store, hardware store, two museums, coffee shop, a community center, chamber of commerce, post office and several other shops and businesses along an approximately one-mile stretch of curved shoreline. Almost everything is within walking distance on Beaver Island or there are several places to rent vehicles, bicycles or kayaks. Anywhere below the main four corners on the single paved road is virtual open road dotted with farms and homes and a golf course. There is one newly added glamping retreat, a coffee shop and Fresh Air Airport heading out to what is known as “the west side.” There is also an east side, a south end and a north shore contained in the 55 square mile area known as the Emerald Isle. These and other name locations let you know this is truly a friendly place where people still give directions by telling you actual names of places instead of addresses. A new addition to the island is the 12,000 acre Beaver Island Birding Trail, marked with bright orange signs that mark lovely trails through forest and dunes leading to heartstopping shoreline views all around the island. Beaver Island is the largest island in Lake Michigan and a critical migratory bird stopover where birds frequently remain to nest. The new Beaver Island Water Trail is a 42-mile paddling trail that circumnavigates the entire Island. This Trail is geared toward adventure paddlers who are comfortable paddling in the unpredictable conditions of Lake Michigan and accustomed to rustic access sites and overnight beach camping. BEAVER ISLAND

You will find local residents and businesses casual, friendly and open to visitors. They might even lend you a car or offer you a “boodle” around the island. This is simply an opportunity to tour the island at leisure with a person who knows their way around and can teach you a little about the island they love. You can say there is nothing to do, yet much to do. No strip malls or fast food but plenty of music, festivals, events and entertainment seasonally. You will also find fine dining at such restaurants like The Lodge, Circle M or the Shamrock and Stony Acre Grill. More simple meals and breakfast is available at Dalwhinnie Baker and Deli or Paradise Bay Coffee Shop. Find the true essence of the island at Iron Ore Bay Public Beach, or in the singing trees at Little Sand Bay, along wooded walkways and trails or strolling downtown at night. In the flames of campfires in twilight or pure, dark skies, watching stars or northern lights in an empty field or in the hundreds of secluded areas, Beaver Island is unmatched for opportunities to withdraw and enjoy an unhurried pace that only exists in this unpopulated, unspoiled, breathtaking space in Northern Michigan. Upper Peninsula The Upper Peninsula contains 29% of the land area of Michigan but just 3% of its total population. That means peace, serenity and tranquil beauty awaits you around every bend. The mighty Lake Superior is surrounding the peninsula and is the world’s largest freshwater lake by surface area, and the third largest freshwater lake by volume. The southern shore of Lake Superior between Grand Marais, Michigan, and Whitefish Point is known as the “Graveyard of the Great Lakes” and more ships have been lost around the Whitefish Point area than any other part of Lake Superior. Sandstone cliffs, beaches, sand dunes, waterfalls, inland lakes, deep forest, and wild shoreline are all part of the amazing Upper Peninsula. There is so much land untouched to explore, but also some amazing towns such as the great college town of Marquette, Munising, home of the fabulous Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum in Paradise. Why we love Marquette

Courtesy of Aaron Peterson Travel Marquette

Set on the shores of Lake Superior, Marquette is a community with a vision as vast as its horizon. Where Mother Nature’s assets are on display through sweeping scenic vistas, miles of trails, and rushing waterfalls that are as beautiful as they are accessible. Here you can see the forest and the trees and a chance encounter with a local will likely be met with a friendly smile and the possibility of learning of a favorite spot to adventure or eat. While some may view the Marquette area as remote, those who reside here view it as a hidden gem, tucked away under the Milky Way where entrepreneurs and innovators are guided by the Northern Lights while artists and instructors are inspired by a starry sky or clear sunrise. Where when seeking out wildlife it may involve cheering for the beloved NMU Wildcats and students looking for nightlife know they have chosen one of the safest university towns around. The historic downtown pays homage to the rich mineral deposits, dense forests, and maritime markers that have helped to shape its story while recognizing that much like those who settled the area, it is vision that brings prosperity. From its fiercely independent and unique dining establishments to its assortment of awardwinning craft breweries, Marquette’s spirit is on display in its diverse offerings which all share a love for an area that embraces a culture anchored in artisanship, ingenuity, and perseverance. Marquette History: In 1845, Jackson Mining Company, the first organized mining company in the region, was formed. During the 1850s, Marquette was linked by rail to numerous mines and became the leading shipping center of the Upper Peninsula. The first ore pocket dock, designed by an early town leader, John Burt, was built by the Cleveland Iron Mining Company in 1859. By 1862, the city had a population of over 1,600 and a soaring economy. In the late 19th century, during the height of iron mining, Marquette became nationally known as a summer haven. Visitors brought in by Great Lakes passenger steamships filled the city’s hotels and resorts. South of the city, K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base was an important Air Force installation during the Cold War, host to B-52H bombers and KC-135 tankers of the Strategic Air Command, as well as a fighter interceptor squadron. The base closed in September 1995, and is now the county’s Sawyer International Airport. Marquette continues to be a shipping port for hematite ores and, today, enriched iron ore pellets, from nearby mines and pelletizing plants. About 7.9 million gross tons of pelletized iron ore passed through Marquette’s Presque Isle Harbor in 2005.

SAUX HEAD LODGE 297 COUNTY ROAD KB, MARQUETTE Just 12 miles outside of Marquette sits Saux Head Point that includes Saux Head Lodge, a restored historic hunting and fishing lodge and “Overlook House”, a cedar guest house on the majestic waters of Lake Superior, Saux Head Lake and the Big Garlic River. The property has 163 acres including roughly a mile of Lake Superior coastline, half of Saux Head Lake and the entire section of Big Garlic River. The Superior frontage is both sugar sand beach and granite outcroppings with dramatic stone faces that on windy days throw 30’ water spray into the air. This rugged shoreline includes the pine tree covered Saux Head point that juts out into the Great Lake. Leaving Superior you go inland down the Big Garlic River to about another mile of shoreline on Saux Head Lake, a large scenic Huron Mountain lake offering warmer calm waters. Saux Head Lake is a family recreation lake and like Superior is ideal for kayaking, canoeing, fishing and waterskiing. The Big Garlic River connects the two lakes and cuts through the property separating the two homes. The Overlook House is accessed by both a footbridge and car bridge. These diverse lands offer mountainous terrain and mountain bike trails, garden plots, large orchard, mixed hardwoods and pine forests along with Pop’s Mountain, the highest point on the property with 360-degree views. The main lodge was renovated by the family in 1959 from its original 1917 state, and in 2009 it was completely renovated and updated again. This main lodge has about 5000 square feet and a full basement. Other notable features include Birdseye maple floors, updated kitchen with top of the line appliances, a copper dome fireplace, four spacious bedrooms, and three and one half updated bathrooms. The ground floor is built entirely of pine logs with a fabulous great room that has high ceilings lined with large pine beams spanning the room with the original 1917 stone fireplace. Two-thirds of the first floor is cosseted by a covered veranda that provides everyone with an outstanding spot to watch beach activities and incredible sunsets. Local artistry can be found in the house including driftwood mirror in the main level bath, handcrafted outdoor chandeliers and handmade bar stools in the kitchen. The Overlook House has stunning sunrise views where the mouth of Big Garlic River meets Lake Superior. Overlook home was built in 1993 and upgraded in 2008. This cedar home offers about 1,800 square feet, two bedrooms, two baths, screened porch and large family room with field stone fireplace. There is even a tennis court a stone’s throw away. A 1920s era boathouse on the river is used for storage for canoes, kayaks, and other equipment next to the footbridge. Along with Lake Superior white fish, steelhead trout frequent the river and inland lake. This needs to be seen to believe, having the choice between the warm calm inland lake waters of Saux Head Lake, or the dramatic views and waves of Lake Superior, or even the flow of a river this property will excite your inner spirit. Marquette is the largest city in the Upper Peninsula and has received national recognition of the nation’s “most livable communities”. It has great restaurants, shopping, and excellent regional hospital and is home to Northern Michigan University. It’s a recreational town offering world-class mountain biking trails and some of Michigan’s top ski facilities. The property is being offered furnished except for personal items and keepsakes. What clients are saying about Harbor Sotheby’s International Realty Sales Associates “Brad is a top-notch realtor. Always honest and responsive, he made himself available on odd days or hours to show properties. He was very patient and helpful as we searched over time to find our perfect property. He went above and beyond many times and was a great resource about the Petoskey and Boyne City area. Highly recommended!”

“Connie was the agent who accomplished the sale of our lakefront home in Charlevoix, as well as assisting us in the purchase of our new home in the Charlevoix Country Club. We found her to be diligent, honest, friendly and competent. We would, without hesitation, list a house with her in the sure knowledge that we could do no better. “

“Kim is the most impressive realtor I have ever had the pleasure of working with! Extremely knowledgeable in every aspect of her profession and also knows plenty about building homes too! She is invaluable for other info concerning contractors, maintenance people and places to visit in a large northern area of Michigan. In addition to all that she is probably one of the kindest, most patient, caring people I’ve ever met.”

“I want to formally thank you Melissa for a superb and highly professional job performed in the listing, selling, advice and subsequent rapid sale of my home. The time you took to educate me on a selling price and subsequent counseling regarding sale negotiation were without pressure, straight-forward and honest.”

“We have worked with Chris on several transactions and found her to be exceptionally professional, poised, and discreet. She also has excellent instincts and will work tenaciously to achieve her client’s goals with the highest standard of integrity.”

“Just wanted to say thank you Kristin for all of your work in helping us purchase our home. Working with you long distance from California to purchase a home in Harbor Springs went better than we expected. After giving you a list of our wants and needs for our next home you were able to find a house that checked all the boxes. Your extra effort of going out to the house and taking more pictures and video while answering our questions over the phone was greatly appreciated. You truly went above and beyond our expectations to help us close and get moved in.”

For those who seek exceptional service marketing homes in Northern Michigan, there is only Harbor Sotheby’s International Realty.
