WELCOME to the summer/fall 2020 issue of RESIDE Thank you for picking up this summer’s edition of RESIDE. It feels great to say Happy Summer to our Harbor Sotheby’s clients, family and friends! I know we are all excited to see the sunshine, warm weather and familiar faces for many reasons. The end of our winter and spring season and stay-at-home orders have brought a flurry of activity to the real estate market.

On The Cover Custom estate located on the gated Peninsula at Bay Harbor sitting on 130’ of frontage on Lake Michigan. Enjoy lake living with endless views. Built in 2012, this exceptional property encompasses a true watefront locale and is close proximity to the Village at Bay Harbor featuring shopping, dining, luxury services, performing arts and a deep water marina. This property is available for sale by Harbor Sotheby’s International Realty. Please see page 17 for details. Photo by: Kim Mettler Barefoot Memories Photography

As you may know, we were allowed to begin working at full capacity mid-May and our team was excited to get back in the field! We expected a steady amount of activity with the lifting of Michigan stay at home orders and of course the typical spring/summer selling seasons -- but actually it’s been much stronger than anticipated. I know many were concerned we’d be in a possible housing crisis -- but nothing in Northern Michigan indicates that, and the housing market here is stronger than ever. In many cases, properties coming to the market are under contract in mere days. Bay Harbor, Petoskey and Harbor Springs communities are seeing some great new listings, and growth of new retail and restaurants. And, we’re excited that a new ferry company launches on Little Traverse Bay at the end of June. This brings all of our waterfront communities together through quick ferry rides between Petoskey, Harbor Springs and Bay Harbor for day or early evening adventures.

Barb Benger Shepherd, Sales Associate Barb Benger Shepherd is a Sales Associate in our Harbor Springs location, and is a familiar face in the beautiful resort town on the shores of Little Traverse Bay. You could say that Barb is definitely one busy lady, and very involved with the local communities that Harbor Sotheby’s International Realty serves. She is a Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan native and grew up there with six sisters, which had to be a very active household. Barb is a Michigan State University graduate, and now sits on the Kappa Delta Sorority Board of Directors. Her background in marketing and management is a definite complement to her current real estate career. With a combined total of 33 years in sales, she has worked with buyers and sellers of various property types and is a very capable negotiator in any setting. She began her real estate career in Vail, Colorado and is now practicing in Northern Michigan, specializing in waterfront, in-town and country properties. Barb is an active member of numerous associations including the Walloon Lake Association, the Harbor Springs and Petoskey Chambers of Commerce, and volunteers at numerous area events. She is a member of the National Association of Realtors and Women’s Council of Realtors, as well as an appointed member of the Emmet Association of Realtors Tribunal committee. A native Michigander, Barb has lived in Harbor Springs with her husband, Ken, for 35+ years. She also owns homes in Grand Rapids and Florida. She has two daughters, Andi and Meg who are both engaged and both getting married this summer, which is sure to be a very big milestone in her life.

She is an enthusiastic outdoorswoman at heart, including an avid snow skier, boater, hiker, biker and paddle boarder. Barb also loves entertaining and enjoying time with her family. ...OF THE EXCEPTIONAL Connie Lenau, Sales Associate Connie’s career in real estate began in the 1980s as an agent with Century 21 in Big Rapids; which was back when all agents wore the famous gold jacket. While always keeping her license active, she took breaks from selling and listing properties to raise two daughters while owning and operating an in-home based business. In 2006, she sold that business and settled into retirement doing part time volunteer work for Habitat for Humanity and then serving as a board member for eight years. After a few years of leisure, I felt it was time for something new. (Having worked since the age of 14 it was difficult for her to not be working). Connie happened to see the Sotheby’s banner in Bay Harbor and decided to get back to work selling real estate. She is now in her ninth year with the Harbor Sotheby’s brand, with a span of over 36 years in the business. In her free time Connie likes to garden, raise orchids, and having been a member of the Petoskey Area Garden Club for 23 years, she helps take care of the beautiful perennial garden behind the History Museum at the Petoskey waterfront. She also enjoys golfing, looking for and collecting Petoskey and puddingstones, traveling, including spending colder months in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, playing Scrabble, solving crosswords puzzles, spending time with family and friends, as well as her beloved Australian Shepherd Bruno. In the summer season, you can find Connie and her husband Bill actually living on their boat at the Bay Harbor Lake Marina. They have been at the marina since the time it was built. It definitely makes it so much easier when she can walk to work just steps from the dock. In 2016, Connie became a beekeeper with a mission and desire to help sustain the honeybee population. Her love of beekeeping started with one hive, when a local beekeeper, Linda Longworth of Lavender Hill Farm, was selling the farm and downsizing her number of hives. Linda realized her interest in beekeeping when she attended a presentation she gave about bees and the use of pesticides. Linda gave Connie her first hive and has continued to mentor her for the past five years as she grows and learns. With advice from her mentor, last year she decided to take on a second hive, which provided her with an opportunity to compare the behavior of both hives, move frames with brood to the weaker hive, which gave the weaker hive a quick population boost. The hives are kept on the 110-acre farm, about 4 miles from her house. She drives past the hives nearly every day and always notes the temperature and what’s blooming in the neighborhood and surrounding area. A tiny little honeybee can fly several miles for food and it’s important to know if the bees have a food source in the early spring. If not, she will supplement feed them with a concentrated sugar water mix which she stores for them. In the fall, she has to make sure they have plenty of honey stored in their frames. With Connie’s quest to help the bees, any honey that she might take is a bonus. She feels that is her reward for her time and efforts, even though she gives away most all of the honey to family, friends and as gifts to her clients. Her theory is, “bees help feed us, so we need to help feed the bees.” Connie is very passionate about her bees and stresses to others to plant native plants and flowers, provide a water source and most importantly, limit your use of pesticides; including checking pesticide use of where you buy your plants. Connie also truly enjoys listing and selling property in beautiful northern Michigan, and helping to educate her clients who may be new to our area all the wonderful reasons it’s the perfect place to call home.

Little Traverse Bay at Sunset Beach, Bay Harbor Lake Michigan is one of the most beautiful bodies of fresh water in our country, stretching a total of 22,300 square miles. It is a recreational lake, perfect for yachting, sailing, swimming at one of the many beaches along the shoreline and simply gazing at some of the most glorious sunsets on the planet. The rocks dotted along the shoreline make an artistic pattern, each unique and beautiful in their own way. Rock hunting is still one of the sweetest joys of walking along the shores of Lake Michigan, and finding that very special one as a keepsake. Sunset Beach in Bay Harbor hosts many wedding ceremonies each year, and is one of the only private beaches on Lake Michigan for special events. Photo by Alexandra Lyn Culver

Spotlight Artist

Amy Moglia Heuerman “Evoking Joy and Serenity with Blue Hues”

A committed, lifelong artist, Amy Moglia Heuerman was raised in Tennessee and Georgia, and moved with her family to New Jersey at 13, where she lived for more than 30 years before relocating to Omaha with her husband and two sons. Now based in Naples, Florida, and Bay Harbor, Michigan, and married to attorney Paul Heuerman, Amy has transitioned from a 20-year career as a children’s illustrator into a fine artist of coastal abstracts. The self-taught artist has studied throughout her life, honing her craft. Her strong calling to create art began as early as kindergarten, when her drawing talent earned effusive praise from teachers. Following graduation from the University of Richmond (Virginia) and two years as a second-grade teacher, Amy followed her creative drive and launched a business creating children’s illustrations – books, cards, gifts, games and more revealed her unique talent for figurative illustrations. The venture was successful for 20 years, at which point Amy retired the business and moved from Omaha to Naples, Florida.

“Fresh” 48 x 48 inches. Acrylic on canvas. “Cotton” 60 x 48 inches. Acrylic on canvas. 38 | harborsothebysrealty.com

Southwest Florida was a revelation. Amy was dazzled by the water and sky, which evoked her childhood on the Jersey shore. Today, her paintings reflect her passion for natural landscapes with an emphasis on coastal scenes and moods. A marked feature of her paintings is horizons, which draw viewers into the paintings and symbolize new beginnings. She uses a unique combination of tools to apply paint to canvas. Starting with a primer of cadmium red, she then applies layers of hues of yellow, lavender, gray, black, and blue, using sponges, knives, brushes, and her favorite wallpaper scraper. Her work has quickly caught the attention of Naples-based collectors and galleries. In Bay Harbor, Michigan, her summer home, she maintains a studio and gallery on the Village’s Main Street. In addition, three of Amy’s larger paintings are exhibited at Bay Harbor’s Great Lakes Center for the Arts. Another driving passion is Amy’s commitment to giving back to the community through her volunteer work for Guadalupe Center and the Naples Botanical Garden, as well as donating paintings to Legal Aid of Collier County for its fund-raising auctions and D’art for Art in Petoskey, Michigan. Amy’s new collection establishes a connection with viewers, who bring their own experience to the art and see unique shapes and moods. Her mastery of layering, whimsy and color prevails in her canvases of hues both ethereal and earthy, guided by imagination, intuition and sense of adventure.

Artist Statement Amy’s intention as an artist is to evoke joy and serenity through a full spectrum of blue hues. “Blue is peaceful, calm, and encourages an open mind. My lifelong love for sea and sky translates into abstracts with promising horizons. I work toward achieving the sweeping motion of clouds and tides through textured layering with tools ranging from brushes to palette knives to sponges to wallpaper scrapers and other hardware tools. My process evolves to reveal my state of being that I hope will uplift viewers. I paint in Naples, Florida, near the Gulf of Mexico, and in Bay Harbor, Michigan, near Lake Michigan, where I have a gallery and studio.”

Local Treasure

Northern Michigan is filled with talented people and unique treasures of all kind. Discover a few of them here.

Thorne Swift Nature Preserve

Dorothy Gerber Strings Program

It’s summer in northern Michigan, and after a few months of being isolated at home, we are all feeling like a little fresh air and exercise to peel off that “quarantine 15 – a few extra pounds that we all might need to shed. The Thorne Swift Nature Preserve is a great place for couples, family and friends to hike and enjoy. Located just north of Harbor Springs, on Lower Shore Drive, Thorn Swift is 30 acres with a mix of upland dunes and lowland cedar swamp, small pond, and Great Lakes shoreline. The view is fabulous with 950 feet along Lake Michigan and 300 feet of public beach. A great place to relax and soak in the northern Michigan summer sun. There is a large parking lot which is adjacent to the Elizabeth Kennedy Nature Center that is on the premises. A total of 1½ miles of trail, dune observation platform, pond observation platform, gazebo, amphitheater, and seasonal guided programs all make this an excellent family destination. You can enjoy family fun by checking out the plants and animals that are found at the preserve and sharing what you find along the way on inaturalist.org. Thorne Swift is open daily 10 am to sunset from typically April 15-November 15. Please note that dogs and horses are not allowed at this nature preserve.

In 2000, Gay and Peter Cummings were approached to see if they would help support music education for the children of Northern Michigan to study stringed instruments. In this effort, children would be able to receive at no-charge, lessons during the school day. Before this time this option was not available to area youth. Accepting this challenge, the Dorothy Gerber Strings Program was created, named in honor of Gay Cummings’ mother Dorothy who with her husband Daniel founded Gerber Baby Foods. Since its inception, the program has evolved to include string classes, individual lessons including the Suzuki Method, the Dorothy Gerber Youth Orchestra ad the DGSP Summer School of Music. The Cummings Quartet was established in 2017 to act as mentors/models to students wishing to work on their craft at a higher level. In 2018, students competed in a Practice Olympics, and in 2019, March Madness spurred them on to greatness. Ensembles have performed throughout the community to share with everyone the talent and dedication of the student’s efforts. As it embarks on its 20th year, the Dorothy Gerber Strings Program is proud to announce that it is joining the Great Lakes Center for the Arts as a core educational program of the Center.

John Cross Fisheries When traveling through Northern Michigan, you will likely experience a wide variety of freshly caught fish at area local restaurants. If you ask where they get their fresh fish, there’s a good chance they’ll say John Cross Fisheries, and for good reason. This long-standing staple has been serving the Charlevoix community for over seventy years. Catching up to 10,000 pounds of fresh fish daily, it’s safe to say, “they know their fish.” The catch can vary daily, but you’ll find: salmon, walleye, whitefish, trout, and perch among other seasonal fish. They also carry non-native seafood varieties that are frequently brought in. Located just a few blocks from downtown Charlevoix on Belvedere Avenue on the shores of the south side of Round Lake, John Cross Fisheries is a hidden gem. Stop by for the fresh catch of the day, and you will be enjoying an amazing dinner tonight.

The Dorothy Gerber Strings Program (DGSP) has provided exceptional locally-based strings music education for area youth since its inception in 2000. The program is a celebration of the legacy of Dorothy Gerber, made possible through the support of her daughter Gay Gerber Cummings and her children, and provides students across Charlevoix, Emmet and Antrim counties the opportunity to study violin, viola, cello, and bass. The program offers string classes in several area schools by assigning qualified teachers to meet with students in classroom settings multiple times per week for instruction. Beginning, intermediate and school orchestra levels are offered free-of-charge. For more information please visit their website to see if your child’s school participates in the program. Both group and private lessons are available.

Local Craft Distillers Lend a Helping Hand Let’s raise a toast to a few of our local distillers who in the midst of the Covid-19 crisis switched gears to produce hand sanitizer at a time when a lot of pressure was on the health care systems and first responders to stop the spread of the virus. As the country began lock-downs, craft distillers were bracing for the fact that they would lose revenue and employees because their tasting rooms were not able to be open and were not really deemed “essential workers” in the industry. While many of us were in quarantine and unsure of the impact this would have on our communities, these guys adapted quickly and realized they had the sanitizing runoff on hand, which is what is left-over essentially by producing alcohol. As things escalated and hospitals were preparing for a possible influx of patients and with PPE products in high demand, craft distillers were on the hunt for glycerol, which is what is needed for a formula of sanitizer that is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In March, High Five Spirits in Petoskey shut down their vodka production immediately and figured out how to make the sanitizer to donate to first responders and local hospitals, which was first and foremost on their minds. They conducted lab tests to make sure that their solution was as high-grade as what they were using currently in hospitals to sanitize, and when the tests came back positive they produced hundreds of gallons for McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, as well as EMS and police departments. After taking care of them, they opened it up for sale to the public as well and sold out every week. Mammoth Distillers, located in Central Lake prepared to make sanitizer in March as well after watching the trends in the state of Washington which was a hot spot for the virus early on. They produced thousands of gallons quickly, and throughout the last few months were making approximately 400 gallons a week. With requests coming in from large corporations such as the Michigan Department of Corrections, they invested in high-octane alcohol to make the sanitizer. The feeling of satisfaction in being able to respond and assist in keeping us safer, is just another way to give back to the small communities and in the entire state. Foggy Mountain Spirit Company in Boyne Falls also focused their energies in the sanitizer business when it seemed that the demand for it was at front of center of the pandemic. It was a learning curve for this small business, and a few weeks of 24 hour a day distilling including chasing ingredients across the United States and trying to chase down the packaging for bottling, which was also in short supply all over the world. They now have sanitizer products from 64 ounce gallon jugs, to 1 or 2 ounce personal use sizes. They are shipping and delivering all over the state and now offer custom-lasered sanitizer bottles with your private logo on them. These sweet refillable bottles can be seen at your favorite local bar or restaurant on the tabletop, in retail stores and in some local inn and hotel rooms for guests. gypsyvodka.com

All Aboard! Little Traverse Bay Ferry The Fun Way Around the Bay Established in 2019, the Little Traverse Bay Ferry will connect the lakeside Michigan communities of Harbor Springs, Petoskey, and Bay Harbor through a 52 foot passenger vessel. The company, made up of an amazing foundation team is a non-profit 501(c)(3) with the mission of reviving northern Michigan traditions to provide unique travel and educational experiences for all ages while connecting and promoting our lakeside communities. Little Traverse Bay has not had a ferry for over 80 years and the idea to form this new service was created by the community for the community. The vessel can carry up to 49 passengers, but initially will carry 30 to help with new social distancing guidelines. Ticket sales are now open to the public for $10 round trip beginning June 25, 2020. Once up and running, the Ferry may also be available for private events.

In June, the Little Traverse Bay Foundation recently started a “crowdfunding campaign” through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation in order to take advantage of a matching grant that will be given to them if they reach a $50,000 goal by July 15. “Creating spaces for people to be more connected to their neighboring communities and waterways is a great example of placemaking,” said MEDC Senior Vice President of Community Development Michele Wildman.

The team found the ‘right’ vessel to represent the Little Traverse Bay Ferry in Cape Fear, NC. The team worked feverishly to ensure her safe arrival to Michigan. The vessel has been cleaned, painted, and received a new engine for safety and reliability. She represents the classic image of what a ferry should look and feel like for the northern Michigan area and community.

Little Bay Boards “BUILDING YOUR DREAM” ...ONE BOARD AT A TIME

There is no better start of a story than one of a father fulfilling a request from his nine year old daughter who requested a paddleboard...but the request was she did not want one from a store, but something a little more unique and special. Her father, Jason Thelen who just happened to be a master carpenter, knew that he could create something that was one-ofa-kind for her. What followed in the Spring 0f 2012 was production on his first custom paddle board. What Jason did not expect is that when he and his daughter would be out paddle boarding, people would come up and ask questions...”where did you get that amazing board?” and “where can I get one?” This is where “Little Bay Boards” was born, in a small workshop/garage at their home.

All photos courtesy of Philip Hutchinson 66 | harborsothebysrealty.com

Through Jason’s research on wooden surfboards, he came across Paul Jensen’s name, who was in the business of crafting hollow, wooden surfboards. The two of them discussed the differences in wave structures and fresh water versus salt water boards, and how to create lake-specific boards for our Michigan lakes. Soon, the demand for the boards skyrocketed and Jason realized that the art that went in to the custom boards was truly his passion. Today, Little Bay Boards has found their home in a larger facility in Petoskey where these timeless and beautiful boards are hand-crafted - each one unique with a special character all their own.

Little Bay Boards strives to use reclaimed wood and locallysourced materials when building the boards. Strips of wood are chosen specifically for their beauty and then pieced together by hand, in a hollow board design, glassed together with low Volatile Organic Compound resin. Because of the construction of the boards, the waves and wood blend together which allows the rider to become as one for a completely different experience that you would have on a store-bought paddle board or surfboard. It’s a true experience from the time you order your Little Bay Board, until the finished product is delivered to you. The boards are designed and customized specifically for the person it is being designed for, including height, weight, your ability. If you are planning on using it in salt water or fresh water...the Great Lakes or an inland lake or river - even if you are planning on having your dog on the board with you. The end result is a surf or stand-up paddle board that is absolutely perfect for you and will last a lifetime.

“Changing the look, the feel and the ride.”

Jason Thelen, Artist & Boardbuilder

BOARDS FOR REASONS - GIVING BACK Because they’re so unique, Little Bay Boards is approached often by many charities to donate for great causes. However, it does prove difficult to donate a week-and-a-half worth of work and materials, since it is very costly and hard to do more than just a couple times a year. Therefore, Board for Reasons was created. It is a patron-based entity of the business. With the help of patrons, they can create and donate to multiple charities over time. Just small donations from customers and partners make it possible to supply a custom paddle board for donation. The selected charities can then use it to raffle, auction or donate. Charities will receive 100% of the profit for their cause. In return, as a “Boards for Reasons” Patron, you will receive specialty gifts from Little Bay Boards including discounts, “first dibs” on merchandise and specialty notifications of what your donations are helping to do. For more information on how you can contribute, order your own customized board or information on this fabulous northern Michigan business, visit littlebayboards.com.

The Mackinaw Club winds through 310 acres of natural wetlands and streams, along mature forests and rolling meadows. The 6,807 yard long design finishes each hole with elevated greens with manicured bent grass. The course has been professionally designed for a superior golf experience. Located just 3 miles south of Mackinaw City in Carp Lake (a small town of approxmiately 350 people), this little gem gets great reviews and has been listed by Golf Week as one of their “Best Courses To Play.” Tee times are not required, but encouraged on the weekends. The property’s history is interesting as well, as it was used in the 1940s as an emergency landing strip for B-25s. The B-25s were using one of the islands in Lake Huron for bombing runs in World War II. It also was used for a snowmobiling club for many years beginning in the 1970s. The golf course was built in 2007 and is now operated by Mackinaw Mill Creek Camping, which has been rated by the Detroit News as one of the top family friendly campgrounds in Michigan. The rates are also something to smile about as 18 holes and a cart will run you just $30. Visit mackinawclub.com for more information.

Eyes to the Sky

Headlands International Dark Sky Park Emmet County achieved designation for the Headlands as an International Dark Sky Park in May 2011. The designation is awarded by the International Dark Sky Association in Tucson, Arizona, the oldest organization dedicated to protecting and stewarding natural darkness in the world. When the Headlands achieved the designation, it was just the sixth such park in the United States and only the ninth in the world. As a result, the Headlands have enjoyed a great deal of success, and more importantly, the park has been part of a very dynamic, international movement to protect natural darkness worldwide. From this northwest corner of the Michigan mitt, the Headlands have been able to influence Michigan state legislation which now protects the dark skies over an additional 30,000 acres of state-owned land, and the staff at the Headlands work in partnership with the National Parks Service on the dark skies over their properties in the Great Lakes region.

The Park contains approximately 550 acres of pristine woodlands, more than two miles of undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline and many species of rare and endangered plant life. Visitors to the Headlands may experience sightings of the many wild animals native to the area including: bald eagles, osprey, white tail deer, wild turkeys, coyotes and occasionally a black bear. Marked nature trails guide hikers, bicyclists, cross-country skiers, and nature photographers to experience the park throughout the changing seasons. The Headlands is a “day-use” and star-gazing park only which means you can’t camp overnight. When the darkness falls, on a clear night you can see the most visually stunning skies which in the summer and fall could mean catching a glimpse of a meteor shower, the Milky Way, shooting stars and searching for your favorite constellations. There is a gift shop inside the Watefront Event Center and guest houses that can be rented. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to explore our universe in such a fabulous way. Another fun stop is the MacGulpin Point Lighthouse, just one mile away from the Dark Sky Park. Built in the 1860’s, the lighthouse protected shipping on the Straits of Mackinac against fog, storms and rocks for decades. If you enjoy history and the intrigue of lighthouses, don’t miss it.
