Welcome As we welcome the new season in northern Michigan we reflect back on the great opportunities of 2019. We would like to recognize those who we have assisted in purchasing a home and to those who listed their home with us. We would like to say thank you for the trust and responsibility you bestowed upon us. As we move out of 2019 and into a new year, we also reflect on the overall state of the market in northern Michigan. As ambassadors of the real estate market, we are always asked, “How’s the real estate market?” While that answer may vary from person to person, I think the overall tone is that homes are selling and there is an overwhelming interest in northern Michigan real estate. We have seen a consistent transition from 2018 into 2019 and we expect that to continue into 2020. Why is now a good time to sell? Many people think winter is not a good time to sell, but I say it is. Many people made the decision to purchase this past summer after the end of their vacation. Interest rates are at record lows, and why compete against a flood of homes that come into the spring market. It’s proven that 90% of buyers are using the Internet to look for properties, and it’s critical to have a platform such as Sotheby’s International Realty’s to reach this affluent audience. Buyers looking today are planning for tomorrow, or in this case, next spring and summer. Now is also a great time to buy! With interest rates at a continued record low, now is also a great time to think about a purchase. As real estate professionals, we are well versed in our areas, and are experts in the field. We will guide you through the process and negotiate on your behalf. If you have real estate goals that are unmet, please let one of us at Harbor Sotheby’s International Realty assist you. Let us help turn that dream into a reality so you can start making memories that will last a lifetime.

Sincerely,

Brad Rellinger Managing Broker HARBOR SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY

Their current initiatives focus on promoting STEM for young women, advocating for more women to serve on corporate boards, supporting women veterans and creating awareness and supporting victims of human trafficking and campus sexual assault in the State of Michigan. She also serves as Vice Chair on the Board of Directors for North Central Michigan College Foundation. ...OF THE EXCEPTIONAL Eric Yetter, Sales Associate Eric Yetter has been a Sales Associate in the Bay Harbor office for over 15 years. His knowledge of real estate in Northern Michigan is extensive and his passion for the area is extremely authentic. In the summer months, you can see him tooling all around the Bay Harbor community in the Harbor Sotheby’s GEM car. It is a great way for him to immerse himself in the lifestyle that northern Michigan represents. Families enjoying waterfront activities, or enjoying an ice cream cone on Main Street. People escaping big city life and relishing the simple beauty of our area. “I’m really proud to live in northern Michigan and I enjoy sharing it with people interested in living here too.” The summers here are full of festivals and farm markets, award-winning golf, beaches and trails, fabulous lakes and families enjoying their summer cottages. Fall is in brilliant color, with more and more visitors coming to the area to witness the scenic drives, pumpkin patches and the many local wineries. With winter, the ski resorts come alive and the true enthusiasts watch the forecast daily for fresh powder. Every season is magical in northern Michigan and meeting a local like Eric is your best first step to learning about this region. While Eric specializes in luxury real estate on all the area lakes and towns, he has become the Bay Harbor expert.

With 16 years of experience and knowledge acquired, he is the go-to guy for Bay Harbor real estate. “I’m here literally every day. I love the people. I love the lifestyle.” As important as his real estate career is, he will tell you that he identifies as a dad first, and a real estate guy second. That does not mean he does not put his heart and soul into buying and selling, but being a family man is what matters most. He has lived in Petoskey for 20 years with his wife and two daughters Lena, 16 and Marley, 13. He will tell you quite simply, “My daughters are my everything.” He is proud of the fact that he has taken his daughters to and from school every single day of their lives. He also coached all their basketball and soccer teams starting when they were in elementary school. He volunteered for many years, and thought it was great being a part of their sporting events. It gave him the opportunity to spend even more time with them and watched them grow and gain confidence in their specific sport. He really likes carpooling a bunch of girls to the games, listening to them sing out loud to the songs on the radio. Eric never misses the Saturday morning games, drinking coffee with the parents who are shivering with mittens on to all go cheer for their kids. He also likes to brag about his oldest daughter Lena who is now 16. “She does pole vault and is on the Petoskey High School Track Team.” Nearly every Sunday in the winter months, you can find Eric and his daughters skiing at Nubs Nob in Harbor Springs. When he is not selling and listing properties, Eric is also very involved with the City of Petoskey Planning Commission, which he has been a part of for eight years. Their role is to create and approve a master plan as a guide for community development. It’s a volunteer commitment, but it shows how truly invested he is in the future of Petoskey. As the winter months settle in, Eric has invested in a new hobby. “I’m going to try pickle ball this winter at North Central Michigan College.” He already tried it once and is hooked. Just another example on how Eric wants to take in all northern Michigan has to offer.

2020 Interior Design

Trends What is a trend anyway? A trend is the direction something is going…. trends come and go and come back again. What is a trendsetter? Someone who leads the way and defies the rules. To be honest, I have never been a big fan of trends… I am a believer that a true trend is to design what you LOVE, it will be timeless, and you will never tire of it. With that being said, 2020 interior design trends seem to be a bit more special than recent years past. Take a moment to think about the change of seasons. The EXCITEMENT each one offers and the beauty of nature each reveals. Seasons ignite a burst of freshness and inspiration and each with a look all its own. Seasons create a sense of comfort, nostalgia and natural wonder. They are true works of art. In a modern world of touch screens, bright lights, smart phones and hi-tech gadgets, this year’s design trends are a relief from it all. We are seeking the refuge of calm, cozy, inviting homes blended with natural materials that bring nature in. We will be lowering ceilings, dividing spaces, and pairing furniture closer together to create more intimate and welcoming settings, creating social environments in our homes and off of the screens. Color trends will reference nature, from its soft grey skies, its warm fall hues of burnt orange and buttery tan to summer’s blue waters and vibrant sunsets. It’s no wonder nature’s blue is the number one selling color for interior design. Wood accents in ceiling details, trim work, furniture, floors, doors and windows will have the presence of wicker, jute, rattan, grass cloth and dark walnut. Mixing these natural elements with soft luxurious tactile textiles such as, boucle’, linen, mohair and velvet combined with the richness of leather and suede create a textural environment making our homes the ultimate cozy nest. So, make up a cheese tray, open your favorite bottle and invite some friends over. Bring the social back to the comfort of your own home.

Cheers to 2020 Interior Design Trends! Kali Weber Chatham House Interior Design

Local Treasure

Northern Michigan is filled with talented people and unique treasures of all kind. Discover a few of them here. Boyne Bamboo Fly Rods For 29 years, Alex Wolff has been creating his bamboo fly rods in a small workshop at his home in Boyne City. The craftsmanship he puts into each rod is an amazing process in itself. It takes approximately 40 hours to complete the entire process for a custom rod. Alex is in his 90s, and still spends time in his workshop all year long doing something he truly loves. How did he even get started making these beautiful fly rods? “After I retired almost 30 years ago, I became interested in learning how to make fly rods.” He took a week-long class in Pennsylvania and was taught the fine art and process of what goes into this very unique skill. It starts with a 12’ long piece of bamboo which comes from two provinces in China. It is a specialized type of bamboo, and there are hundreds of different types, but only these two kinds have the right amount of tension without breaking which work perfectly for fly rods. The 12’ section produces two rods. “You have to look for thickness, clarity and beauty when picking out the bamboo to create the rods with, along with a lack of blemishes,” says Alex. The bamboo is then split in (6) sections that are triangular and wrapped together to form a hexagonal shape for the tips. The hexagon is then wrapped to keep it together with a special wrapping machine to let it cure for 24 hours. The entire process involves precision and workmanship including heat-tempering at 375 degrees for exactly 3.75 minutes to get the moisture out of the bamboo which makes it stronger. Next is using a beveler for smoothing edges, sanding all residue, a custom tapering process which defines the action of the rod (slow, medium or fast) and hand-planing. The wrapping on the tips is made from colored silk, and if the rod is custom you are able to pick the color of your choice. The fly rod is varnished by two different types of dipping processes, including filling a PVC pipe with varnish and sealing and capping one side and using a pulley device, attach the rod to it and drop it into the varnish - hang up to dry and repeat. The reel seat is made out of exotic woods, that have character and beautiful markings, and the cork on the rod comes from Portugal. The finished works of art are sold between $1,400 to $1,800, which is below the current market value for custom fly rods of this caliber. Just meeting and speaking to Alex about his passion for this craft is a pleasure. Buying a bamboo fly rod from him would be a treasure you will have for a lifetime. boynebambooflyrods.com

Create Community Arts Studio If you have a chance to visit CREATE, which is tucked nicely in the center of downtown Boyne City, you will immediately be drawn into the positive and colorful energy in the fabulous arts studio.

Symons General Store Symons General Store has been a cornerstone of downtown Petoskey for over 60 years. The Symons family has preserved the general store philosophy today providing a gourmet twist with the finest specialty food from local purveyors and international artisans.

Sara Manchester, the founder and the creative force behind the studio is a strong believer that artistic outlets help strengthen and enhance the quality of life for individuals and photo - Create Facebook page contributes to the core components of a livable, sustainable community. Sara received her B.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and also has a Masters in Art Therapy. She has worked with children and families throughout her practicum in domestic violence shelters, hospice, and has designed and taught K-5 after school art programs. The vision of the studio is to provide space and programming that meets the needs of the community and cultivates each person’s innate ability to heal. It also allows children, teens and adults alike to explore their creativity as well, with fabulous class offerings and art clubs. The K-5 AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM allows children to express themselves with instruction and brings excitement and wonder as children develop life-long skills that can be carried with them into other areas of their lives. It’s a healthy and happy environment for kids attending the program. The ART LAB is specifically for middle school kids. It offers a series of labs after school to choose from throughout the school year. Each week they delve into a new art medium. The loft space in the studio is for the ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE program. It is an intensive day program offering studio space to emerging high school artists. Students who reside in Charlevoix and Emmet County are eligible to apply.

The store opened its doors in Petoskey during June of 1956, occupying the bottom floor of one of the city’s oldest brick structures. Although the building had no plumbing or electricity, Tom Symons had a vision to create a store unlike any other. After renovating the building, Tom added a new facade, as well as what would become the wine cellar. The store was originally supplied with coffee, spices, and other rarities by historically famous distributors S.S. Pierce and Haddon House. Tom was also a leader in importing gourmet products directly to the store’s front steps. Additionally, Viviano Wine Distributors in Detroit helped Tom establish the store’s now famous wine collection. For the first time, locals had access to the elegance of gourmet foods.

In the late 1970s, Lynne Symons took service to the next level and introduced patrons to the world of freshly baked croissants, breads, and cookies. In addition, she began making delicious sandwiches using Usinger’s Meats of Milwaukee. This was the first time the company offered freshly baked and ready to eat foods. Her vision of selling fresh baked goods was the catalyst for changes to come. Tom and Lynne’s son, Chandler, followed in his parents’ footsteps, opening the popular fine dining establishment Chandler’s - A Restaurant just around the corner from Symons in December of 1999. It is an intimate and charming corner in downtown Petoskey made possible by the vision of the Symons family.

Spotlight Artist

Chris Van Winkle, Photographer classic style..modern edge

Chris Van Winkle is a self-taught photographer, who came by the art by “accident”. While attending a high-end wedding in Mexico, he happened to see well-known photographer Elizabeth Mesina in action. Watching her shoot seemed to strike something in him, and he thought “it looked like fun.” When he returned from the Mexico trip back to California, he began working with a photographer as a “second shooter.” The experience taught him many techniques on how to capture those perfect shots that can become wonderful memories for years to come. Chris attended college majoring in Fashion Merchandising and spent 25 years in the men’s neckware business in different roles including sales, design and licensing. Deciding to venture out on his own was a leap of faith. He began his professional photography career in 2002 and opened his business, Chris Van Winkle Photography.

Chris grew up outside of New York City and moved to Florida in 10th grade. He also lived in California for six years, and it is still his favorite place to be. Chris only ventured to northern Michigan after he was asked to help run a local hand-bag company. Chris has traveled the world and the camera of course is always in tow. He has traveled to all 50 states - but more remarkably has visited 85 countries. His favorites are Morocco, Italy and Antarctica. His favorite states? Utah and California. He is definitely “chill” in his demeanor which reflects his photography style as well, as he believes “there is nothing worse than a photographer barking orders at you” during your special day or event. Chris does love shooting candids and people the most, and is not ashamed at all to admit that his iPhone captures many of his great photographs. “The iPhone 11 is awesome and takes great photos!’

“Chris is a very talented photographer. He is organized and accommodating to photo requests. He works well under pressure. With large families and a long list of requested photos he made the day progress easily. He and his assistant did a phenomenal job of capturing our wedding day! Memories to last a lifetime.”

50 | harborsothebysrealty.com

“Chris did an amazing job with our wedding! He is very easy to work with, and extremely efficient. We had some last minute changes on our day, and Chris was wonderful to work with. Very flexible, kind, and talented. We were blown away with the finished product! We would highly recommend Chris if you are looking for a wedding photographer.”

Chris shoots 30 - 35 weddings a season with his “second shooter” LeAnn Kieft who has worked with him for eight years in northern Michigan. He says they are a great team and she definitely gets a lot of credit for making his business what it is here. Wedding photography does not make him nervous at all, in fact he says, “it’s fun - you only get one chance to get it right.” He thinks meeting new people each week and capturing these amazing special memories for them is great because each one is so unique and special in their own way. The summer season in northern Michigan also keeps him busy photographing homes for Harbor Sotheby’s International Realty. He enjoys creating images that “make people want to buy that particular home, so it’s important the photos give you a good sense of place.” Photography is really just a six month job for Chris, who doesn’t sit still for long. He also helps in operations for a business in Florida including accounting, projections and market strategies for them. He also owns two homes in Mexico and will be running them as an Airbnb as his next fun project. Where does Chris see himself in five years? “I will probably retire from the wedding business and LeAnn will take it over and I will kite board and travel.” I think we all need tips from Chris on how to live a great, exciting and well-balanced life. And of course, always capturing those memorable images along the way.

“When you see something cool or unique, shoot it!” ~ Chris Van Winkle

The Hills are Calling Enjoy these three “hot spots” for some winter fun this season! Boyne Highlands, Harbor Springs Originally called Harbor Highlands, the resort was founded by 10 businessmen, and opened with one slope and a rope tow during the 1955/56 season. Through the next few years, Harbor Highlands expanded adding more trails, uphill transportation, and a small day lodge. But the owners soon ran out of money, amassed considerable debt, and were forced to close. When Everett Kircher decided to buy the property, he insisted on paying off the creditors as well as making sure that all the shareholders recovered their full investments. He committed the next year to planning and went on to purchase an additional 2,900 acres of land adjacent to Harbor Highlands in order to carry out his vision of a large year-round ski and summer resort. When Boyne Highlands opened on December 26, 1963, guests were greeted by not one, but two, of the first triple chairlifts ever built. The resort also offered 11 trails and five lifts, the Highlands Inn with dining room, cocktail lounge, swimming Aonach Mor Moonlight Dinner pool and cafeteria, and the previously built Sleigh Ride to North Peak, bonfire and a Highlands Lodge.

Don’t Miss:

candlelit commutative dinner, live acoustic Today, Boyne Highlands has a total of 55 music and charming ambience. runs, and boasts the longest ski run (North boynehighlands.com Peak Pass) at 1.25 miles. They have 8 chair lifts

and 2 magic carpet rides for the beginners. The resort also offers 4 terrain parks, cross country ski trails, winter tubing and an array of activities throughout the season. They also have a Snow Sports Academy for those wanted to hewn their skills, or learn the art of skiing.

Nub’s Nob, Harbor Springs Nub’s Nob opened to skiers officially on January 18, 1959 with three trails and one double chairlift. A one-day weekend lift ticket for the chairlift is $5. Season Passes are $20 for individuals, $50 for families. There are 3 slopes and a 65 seat chairlift. This is how it all started...fast forward to the present in which they have won countless awards from Parents Magazine under “Great Family Ski Vacations”, SKI Magazine’s “Midwest’s #1 Rated Overall Resort” and “Best Ski Area in the Midwest” many times by the Petoskey News Review readers poll. That is really just the tip of the iceberg one might say...let’s speak a little about their incredible snowmaking process, which can produce 5000 gallons per minute using 292 patented energy efficient Nub’s Nob snow guns. This system, in the hands of the Midwest’s most decorated and experienced snowmaking and grooming team, was once again unmatched in delivering the best conditions possible last season.

Nubs Nob also hosts ski leagues and many fun opportunities for skiers at all skill levels including Nastar Racing on weekends, Volkl/Marker/Dalbello Speed Series, Nub’s Nob Alpine Racing for both adults and juniors (JART for kids 14 and under) and Nordic Nights - a cross-country league sponsored by The Outfitter in Harbor Springs. Their signature competitions include the 56th Annual Nub’s Nob Open, HEAD Banked Slalom Series and a Head 2 Head Slalom Race. Don’t forget to stop at Pintail Peak Warming Hut during your day of skiing at Nubs Nob.
