Choosing the Right Clothes for your Pilates Classes If you are attending a pilates class for the first time, it’s helpful to know what clothes to wear. You certainly want clothing that is comfortable, fits well and is stylish; no one wants to look drab and dreary walking into their first pilates class. In many ways what you wear or choose to wear to your pilates class can be the difference between a good workout and a truly great workout. While it is good that pilates is making a real name for itself as a fitness exercise and a new ‘buzz word’ - if you are looking for some pilates gear it’s not so good. As soon as you look for any clothing that has the word ‘Pilates’ attached to it the price seems to double. While you can shop around for pilates clothing both in store and online it ultimately depends on how much you want to spend. Don’t be swayed by the word ‘Pilates’ being used to describe the clothing, the good thing about a pilates class is there is a range of clothing quite suitable for you to work out in, that won’t break the bank. The main things to look for when buying clothing to wear in your pilates class should include – Comfortable fabrics – the most common fabrics are cotton, spandex, polyester and nylon – all are good as they are good fit and can stretch with your body. When you consider pilates is a LOT about stretching you need something that will move with you and not be restrictive. These materials also repel sweat to help keep your body dry. Fit and comfort – PANTS – these should be fitted around your waist and hips but have a slight flare or a slit at the legs. It doesn’t matter if they have an elastic or drawstring waist – whatever you feel more
comfortable in, just don’t have the pants too tight. TOPS – you can opt for t-shirts, singlets or halter necks, ladies look for one with an internal bra or shelf for extra support and comfort. If you want something that provides a little more coverage look for a longer length top but make sure it’s fitted and doesn’t ride up when you raise your hands or move too much, baggy style tops will just get in your way. Remember whatever you chose to wear to your pilates classes it should make you feel comfortable and give you confidence throughout your pilates workout, comfort is your main priority. Pilates is about movement and if you can’t move properly you won’t be getting the most out of your pilates classes.
