The Myths About Pilates

THE MYTHS ABOUT PILATES There are quite a few things people don’t know about Pilates ● Joseph Pilates was actually a boxer. ● Pilates began as a rehabilitation programme for injured soldiers during WW1. ● Strengthening your core muscles can actually improve your golf swing. Golfers who do Pilates fitness classes in Sydney at Hard Candy Fitness can hit the ball straighter and further just by increasing their core strength. Sadly Pilates has been seen as a past fad that’s something *dancers do* Well, Pilates wasn’t developed for dancers – Joseph Pilates was both a gymnast and a boxer and his theories for how the body moves were developed by him during his time as a medic in a prisoner of war camp in World War One. To test out his theories he attached springs to hospital beds to rehabilitate wounded soldiers. Today Pilates equipment used in Hard Candy Fitness exercise classes in Sydney still use springs for resistance. When Joseph moved to New York City because of the injuries dancers sustain they were drawn to his preventative and rehabilitation techniques. Pilates is not a recent fad. The techniques for movement developed by Joseph Pilates were pioneered in the 1920’s and 1930’s and until his death in 1967 his methods were refined continuously. It wasn’t till Hollywood stars and celebrities during the 1990’s discovered Pilates that it was launched into the spotlight. Pilates is just a fancy word for stretching. No Pilate’s fitness classes in Sydney are far more than just stretching. Pilate’s fitness classes build strength and flexibility. In the 1920’s flexibility was a pretty *out there* idea but Joseph saw that long, lean muscles were less prone to injury and tears, he believed in efficiency. The Pilates technique builds strength and flexibility – for each strengthening exercise there is a corresponding stretch. If you are new to Pilates exercise classes in Sydney you won’t

realise how much you are stretching until you feel and see the results of increased mobility. Pilates is just another abs workout. Pilates exercise classes in Sydney will build a strong core – crunches and sit-ups develop your outer muscles but Pilates goes deeper to work both the surface muscles and the deeper abdominal muscles as well. It’s these deep muscles that allow us to stand upright and give stability to the spine. Pilates is just a group of exercises. Not true Pilates exercise classes in Sydney – the specific exercises Joseph invented won’t work unless his techniques are used too. Pilates is a technique for natural, effective and pain free movement and effects the way you move, with proper practice your body will naturally just move into the Pilates technique without you even thinking about it.
