INTRODUCTION Hi, my name is Hardus de Bruyn. I am a architectural technologist with a solid background in design and construction. The following pages are a selection of works that have been done and redone to represent my abilities and architectural methodology as it has developed through the years. I thoroughly enjoy architecture as an academic discipline although I have come to realize that I prefer the working environment and dealing directly with clients and consultants. I have great appreciation for the people that have selflessly and often even anonymously contributed to my studies and I realize that I owe it to them and to myself to reach the potential I have been challenged to reach. My greatest strengths are that I can think on my feet and design quickly. I do well under pressure and I have no problem working in constructive teams. My greatest weaknesses are that I tend to be bad at time-management although I have been working on it extensively during practice. I realized that it stemmed from an obsessive perfectionism. I have since realized that iteration and not perfection is the key to success. My future plans are to finish my honours degree in 2018 and my masters in 2019. Thereafter I would like to spend 5 years in a firm to learn specifically how to manage a dynamic design office. After that I would like to open my own firm and contribute to the South African and later global built environment by pro-actively design projects and finding the necessary partners to materialize the project.

I was born and raised in Sunnyside, Pretoria, South Africa. I have seen some of its best and worst times. My father was a Building contractor and my mother was a teacher.

great experience and I learned a great deal about timber construction, diesel engines, farming and architecture.

I went to primary school at Lynnwood Laerskool and started High school at Menlopark High school but decided to change over to a more tradisional all boys school called Affies after my parents realized that my grades weren’t what they were supposed to be and that my friends were in trouble with the law.

The following year I enrolled for the architecture coarse at the University of Pretoria. I finished my first and second year but during my final year my fathers business closed its doors after considerable financial challenges. I battled to stay the coarse. At that stage I was already paying my own way including, tuition, food, rent, transport, clothes etc. In fact at that stage I had no transport and I had to walk 45min to campus every morning and every evening. This continued during my first two years of emplyment. My father experienced health problems at during my third year and I realized that I had no choice. I left the University and worked to save up money to finish. It took me five years and the grace of God to be able to continue. I was able to finish my degree in 2017. It was an amazingly tough experience but I proved to myself that I am not a quiter and I also gained unparalleled experience.

My time at Affies greatly influenced my life. I made good friends there and became deeply religious. This prompted me to study Theology at the University of Pretoria. This is still something dear to my heart although I realize that my calling might be different than I anticipated, After studying theology and spending a bit of time in ministry I found myself frustrated with it. I longed to design and build something. I spoke to my father who advised me to visit the faculty of architecture at my alma mater. I was instantly excited and felt the pull of a familiar tailored calling. Unfortunately the entries for the coming year were closed so the lecturer advised me to travel. I took it to heart and decided to work in the United States to gain experience in Construction. It was

I feel that everything that has happened in my life has prepared me to be better at design. To me architecture is rooted in experience. The more experience you have to more you can translate it into good design.

I have a very broad set of skills although this does not mean that I’m thinly spread. I believe that software enable and assists designers to achieve their desired outcome. This does not however mean that software should lead the example. Software is simply another weapon in the arsenal, I believe strongly in working in different media as I believe each medium can help overcome a different problem. For instance a scale model can help one get a sense of scale and spacial quality, where Autocad is great for setting up a basic site plan to work from. Photoshop is effective for creating quick concepts and Indesign is a great tool for compiling your finished work. All the tools work together to for a multimedia presentation that would

otherwise have either taken much longer or might have been nearly impossible. I am currently proficient in nearly all Adobe programs. I prefer to work in Autodesk Revit mostly but can comfortable work in Autocad. I have recently started coming to terms with 3ds Max and Vray. These are very powerful programs with an enormous amount of potensial for architecture. However the learning curve is incredibly steep and it has taken me some time to learn. Autodesk Dynamo is a product that has recently made its arrival and is a visual scripting program fro creating parametric elements inside

of revit. It has great potential application for Architecture but one does need some scripting to understand to work flow and nature of problem solving in Dynamo. I am currently still experimenting with Dynamo but hopefully I’ll get some time to advance in my understanding thereof. I have learned the hard way that when it comes to software companies like Adobe and Autodesk are the best although other programs have great features they tend to disappear over night. Learning software by yourself is a difficult and strenuous process and I prefer software that I know is going to be around for some time. I support ethical software practices.

UNDERGRADUATE FIRST YEAR During first year the focus was mainly on concept design and execution. Spacial perception development and ergonometry. The mediums available ranged from simple models or maquettes to sketches, paint and even some theatre. No digital mediums were allowed and as previously mentioned the emphasis was on concept not technical resolve at all.

SECOND YEAR In the second year of studies basic pragmatism came to the forefront. It wasn’t simply about a great concept but

you had to understand the construction methods and drawings or drafting methods. Digital presentation was allowed but working drawings were still done by hand.

THIRD YEAR Third year was about urban environment and designing within a context. For the first time free reign was

available for presentation. The main difference was that project size and setting was scrutinized. Socio-politics were also investigated and uniformed formalism was a carnal sin.



PLATO’S BED Temporary modular shelter.

Brief: Design a unit for a traveler where, for a short period, he or she can rest, work, cleanse him or herself and obviously store luggage. Apart from the functional requirements you cannot neglect the travelers sensory and tactile experiences. The user and context are Universal. That said it is required that the traveler could be you and therefor you should represent yourself in the space. For this purpose you should make a figure/model of yourself on a scale of 1:10 that at least show a standing, seated and reclining position. The intention of the unit is to be entirely prefabricated and transported to wherever in shipping containers.(Interior dimensions 6050x2750x2750mm). At least two units must fit in to a shipping container. (Should you be in doubt leave at least 200mm all around for structure and cladding of the exterior of which the detail is not relevant for now). Response: The Brief was originally named “Plato’s bed, and Icelandic volcano and 2010”. Therefor it is clear that this brief originated from a rescue situation. Therefore the brief was reinterpreted to a certain degree. The Designed units fit three people (two would have been ineffective) and the person can shower use their own bathroom and sit or sleep on their bed. There is storage space for luggage above and below the bed. However for the bed to fit the length of a 184mm tall man as myself the bed had to be adapted and the foot end raised. (See details in sketch).This has two benefits. Firstly the bed is shorter and fits in the container and secondly it ensures good posture and relief for foot swelling. In order to save space the unit wasn’t stored in the container but rather retrofitted and a part of it.



KOPANONG Artist Studios and exhibition space The Pretoria Arts Museum has identified a need for a catalyst project on their site. Analysis: The site is situated on the edge between the CBD and the High dense residential area of Arcadia. It is surrounded by important functions such as The Union buildings, Loftus Versveld, a school and a church. The site itself is surrounded by high density housing on the North, East and Western sides. These residential building also supply most of the visitors to the park. North and South of the Site the growth of the city has resulted into two very busy streets. The streets make pedestrian movement in a North-South direction minimal and almost act as an urban barrier. Thus most of the movement on the site is either in a EastWest direction or diagonal. The northern park of the site is occupied by the parking lot on the North western side, the museum in the center and an undulating landscaping area North East. There are commercial nodes on the Eastern and Western side of the site. A big SPAR on the west and some smaller cafe’s and restaurants further to the east. Informal trade is also found on the sidewalks of the eastern and western borders with informal traders transiting in and out of the area on a daily basis. Informal transport nodes are situated on the corners of the site whilst formal bus pickups are located on the Northern and Eastern borders. When questioned me than seventy percent of users did not know what the Arts building was and more 90% had never visited it. 65% of the users school children and 70% of the children interviewed were interested in some or other form of arts as a possible career with music production, musician and graphic design being the two most popular. Other than being a recreational park the site also functions as an informal soccer field and drug trading area.

Intention: Initial conceptual sketches were focused on intercepting users along the East - West pedestrian crossing on the Eastern edge. The edge made a great feeding area with most of the pedestrians entering the site through one of to entrances. The first was an entrance on the middle which generally escorts users moving through the park and secondly an entrance to the south where people using the informal taxi’s enter or leave the area. The building area would be between or around these two entrances. The idea being to expose the public to not only art but the making of art. This necessitated not only a gallery that was more accessible but also the work of the artists being visible to the public.


Programmatic considerations: The program a creative assembly necessitates the following functions: • a gallery • a makers space or studio • a lecture space, • reception, • welcoming space. • Parking area, • a defined arrival space from informal transport. • a kitchenette for artists, • a living quarter for the artist and Ablution facilities for both artists and visitors.


Concept development: Further design development lead to a system that employed different geometrical precepts for different functions. The circulatory spaces that intercepted the East-West movement across the site was defined by a rectangular system of open spaces that was defined only by the structure, the roof above and the corresponding floor below, but no walls what so ever. These circulatory spaces did however not impede the thoroughfare of pedestrians across the site. It should however lead to further investigation. The more defined spaces were more organics and had very strong walls towards the outside although they were completely visually accessible from certain angles and the circulation spaces. This meant that there was a denial and reward system incorporated where people are giving the opportunity and motivation to explore the space, the only hindrance being your level of curiosity

TEAM: Johann Wiese Christopher Mcclements Hardus de Bruyn Brief: Murray & Roberts Des Baker Architecture Students Design Competition 2012 RE-SCRIPTING ARCHITECTURE: AN ARCHITECTURE THAT RESCRIPTS The similarities between the production of architecture and cinema, or buildings and films, are easily suggested: script : the brief director : the architect storyboard : sketch design actors : materials editor : builder film : building audience : users Like the architect, the film director brings to life a set of experiences for the audience, defining the poetry, pauses, rhythms, and spaces of a story by deliberating chopping up ‘real’ space and recording it. The film director hardly ever writes the script for the film but rather accepts it as a set of instructions with a particular logic that needs to be interpreted and brought to life through their craft and creative instincts; the film director works from another person’s creative act. What would happen if architects worked from a script or a story - a creative act - that preceded them? The 2012 Des Baker competition requires you to locate, define and re-script a pre-existing ‘script’ through the combination of a set of logical processes and your creative instincts. A pre-existing ‘script’ might be any number of things - blueprints, buildings, sites, descriptions, stories, paintings, sculptures, films ect. The ‘script’ is a set of instructions that will decipher on how you will approach the design, the site and the programme for your project. The key is to analyse and define the logic embedded in the ‘script’ and record the logical and creative processes whereby you have translated/transported/transformed (re-scripted) this into an architectural entity. The result must be a poetic, powerful and well-considered architectural space that contributes to public life or public space. Architectural response: Des Baker is South Africa’s most prestigious competition for undergraduate students of architecture. The brief of 2012 entailed exploring architecture driven by a narrative and the exploration of industry expanding its horizons into other fields. We decided to explore architecture in film as it touched on both these subjects. We explored the theme of “memory as the architect” - Architecture that can act as a trigger to unlock suppressed memory as a means of creating space and experiences from the past. Psychosis Theatric serves to convey the relationship between physical (trigger) and mental (memory) spacial construction, and how these can inform the creation of a virtual space as plausible as real space.

Psychosis theatric uses the metaphors of capitalism as a means to illustrate the lack of interface in our public South African society.

Film and architecture both make use of sequential movements through space.

The ‘secret killing machine’ housed within the cooling tower represents the economic struggle between two competing corporate entities fighting for the control of the power supply market in Pretoria. Their struggle indicates a breakdown in human interaction and modern affinities and desire to connect beyond their own personal interests. Film and architecture are simultaneous in character. The succession of scenes in a montage creates a mental space that resists chronological comprehension. The attractive thing about architecture is that it makes space. It is the place of activity and movement. The user is his or her own film director. Architectural space is physical and, a fraction later in thought, like film, simultaneous in character.

These are strung together by memory. This spatial simultaneity is an important property for arriving at reflexivity. With this, we also run into a complication. Our society functions more and more by means not of totalitarian but pluralistic, simultaneous systems. We must, rather, make use of this schizophrenic simultaneity in order to develop an open architecture of specificity and indeterminateness with a permanent capacity for bowling over the representations. Inspired by the music of Amon Tobin, Atrium Carceri and Massive Attack; and the works of Bernard Tschumi and Factory Fifteen.

opportunity of working with an incredibly talented young architect, Francois Bredenkamp. I rented an apartment from him and we became good friends. During my time at the office I learned a lot about big corporate office culture and had the opportunity to work on some great projects and get some exposure in Urban Design.

HOLMJORDAAN ARCHITECTS Award winning Architects Morne and Marguerite Pienaar appointed me to work for them in 2015. This was a

smaller guerrilla tactics office that functioned as a team. I felt this much more suited my personality type and I thoroughly enjoyed my three years with the firm.

Located on one of the busiest streets in the capital of South Africa, Nesau is a creative Campus that challenges the segregation of working and living spaces. The working and living spaces are shared in the same building with the living quarters set above the studios. The studio work space becomes a rite of passage for those entering the living spaces whilst the living space provides passive surveillance and a sense of ownership through simple vantage.

WILGERS MEDICAL ARCHITECT: Marguerite Pienaar TEAM: Walter Raubenheimer, Kobus Vos, Hardus deBruyn, Leone Pieters. The narrow site for this medical pavilion (200m2) faces onto a sea of parking to its immediate north (belonging to the Wilgers Hospital), with residential buildings along all remaining sides. The massing and placement on site were determined by the balance between a tight budget, FAR and said parking regulations respectively, followed by the rest of the opposing forces described above. The medical pavilion was positioned to edge tightly along the northern boundary of the site, with cars tucked away neatly behind. A double volume defines the entrance, dramatically framed with the corner articulation that responds to its ambition of becoming a small landmark. The pavilion takes cues from the architectural history of Pretoria. Envisioned as a stoep with a pergola to its north, the consulting rooms are placed at the centre of a constrained envelope. The exterior is bagged and painted white (another nod at local traditions), with a smooth interior finish. Local materials were used as far as possible, with furniture pieces hailing the city figure-ground, whilst responding to the notions of ethics of medical practice rather than simply aesthetics. As such, an environment that embodies an embracing, warm and therapeutic sensibility underpinned all decisions in the choice of careful detailing. An urban roof garden, again hailing the distant urban history, creates a small sanctuary. A carefully considered screen that will ultimately become a green screen softens the proximity to road and parking lot onto which the building faces, whilst binding the northern faรงade. It also mitigates the climate of the interior of the building, along with sliding screens that were again the result of a meticulous design process.

UNDERGRADUATE IDIOSYNCRASY ARCHITECTURE

PHOTOGRAPHY I have always been drawn to photography. I started taking photos of my friend doing heroic stunts on

their skateboards. Thereafter I started taking sports photos for the school paper and eventually took photography as an additional subject at school where I learned how to develop and roll my own film and prints.

GRAPHIC DESIGN My first two years of University were paid by money I made as a freelance graphic designer. I had no idea of what I was doing but I quickly found my way. By the end of my second year I was outsourcing most of the work to lecturers of the University’s Information design department. I have had the opportunity to design for some big clients like the AZA Congress and the PPC Imaginarium.

VISUALIZATION For some odd reason I always end up trying to make buildings look pretty. I have done extensive

Architectural visualization in various formats and platforms including animations and Virtual Reality. My most ambitious project included to design and setup of a virtual world (called level design) for a first person shooter game. The game was never published but I enjoyed the process and I think its an amazing way to virtually interact with digital architecture.

The logo is developed as a abstraction of the Golden Ratio.

VISUAL IDENTITY & BRANDING As part of our studies we were encouraged to develop our own brand or identity. For my personal brand I chose to develop a shortened version of my Surname which is “de Bruyn�. The surname de Bruyn is relalted to the colour brown and thus it seemed obvious to keep this relationship in the branding.

Digital strategy:

Brand strategy

Upon decideding how to aproach the brand. It seemed obvious to stay away from a printed brand and encourporate a digital approach as fas as possible. Thus a personal portfolio website, instagram account, facebook account and email was created to showcase work and develop and communicate ideas with others who might be interested.

Social media platforms allow focused content that is shareable to individuals with specific interests. Thus the social media platforms, similar to the portfolio, will act as links back to the website where dialogue and data is captured. Due to the concenced nature of social media various portions of an article or project is scheduled to allow continious exposure to the same article without a repitition of posts. This is also stagered in between other posts to make sure that the content is spead and not menotonous.


Colour Palette

The palette is primarilly inspired by the Brown surname. This is complimented by the blue. The grey tones act as gradient colours. The palette is desaturated because of the discretionary nature of Architecture in contradiction to the bright saturated palletes normally used in graphic media.

Stationary

It has to be said that some form of stationary might be neccesary initially. Thus it was decided to design businesscards and a Portfolio. The Portfolio was designed to be as compact as possible and to offer options for further reading on the website. By sending those who are interested to the website, dialogue can be established, which would be dificult through an extensive printed document.
