Editor's Choice FUNCTIONAL & DECORATIVE Created by Andreas Berlin, this side table is actually made of vintage vases. The idea is to make viewers understand that a vase is not just a product but a segment of a sculpture. Berlin and his team had to experiment to find a perfect construction between elasticity and stability. It was a challenge because each vase is different and they are all inexact in its geometry.

STATEMENT COLOUR COMBINATION The Rose Gold and Matte Black faucets Faucet Strommen work well together providing an exciting choice for luxury bathrooms and kitchens. The rose hue is created by fusing copper with 22.5 carat gold while the Matte Black has a tough, hardwearing finish, making it perfect for kitchens and bathrooms. GOOSE-E An extremely flexible tablet holder designed for the iPad, it can be used anywhere and in any position. Goose-e is a stylish hands free solution that allows optimal tablet use for everyday tasks.

T

he workspace in your kitchen is an important aspect of kitchen design. While it may not be the focal point of the kitchen, countertop ties the kitchen space together. As this workspace is a heavily used area in the kitchen, countertop manufactures recently showcased their latest creations at EuroCucina 2016, one of the major components of Salone Del Mobile. There were lots of head turners, including some cooktops where you can prepare, cook and serve food on the same surface. There were also kitchen islands that extend out to form a counter extension. After cooking, the top can be retracted to cover the sink and cooktop. So, if you are planning on a remodel or intending to give that space a stylish facelift, turn the pages for some great options that combine functionality and style. And speaking of kitchens, most people who live in apartments in the city have to deal with small kitchen space. There is a new kitchen system called Metod, introduced by IKEA, that can be adapted to any space as it is composed of a modular system of different sizes. You can create different combinations of cabinets, drawers, doors and organisers and, most off, you can squeeze the most out of the space you have regardless of the size or shape of the room. Turn to page 28 for the full story. Also, in this issue we have several feature stories, including an article on technologies that are now available for a “smart” bathroom. Did you know that lighting is considered an art? Interior designers often do a balancing act to achieve a practical yet beautiful bedroom using lighting. It’s all about placement, colour and intensity. To get some ideas, turn to page 42. Mirrors too can give your living space a classy look. They can be used anywhere and in many ways to enhance the look and feel of your abode – draw in and reflect light, and add volume and dimension to a small area. Turn to page 48 for some interesting ways on how to use mirrors to take your living space one notch up. Have a pleasant read.

PLAYFUL EDGE These Balloon Dog Bookend from Red Candy blend form and functionality, and keep your bookshelves tidy in a cheerful way. SPLASH ON THE SEAT Allow a splash of colour to spice up your seating plan. The minimalist design and ash veneer composition of the Cult Living Chic Chair from Cult Furniture, makes it ideal for a contemporary dining room, kitchen or playroom.

L

ocated in the rapidly developing township of Alam Nusantara in Setia Alam, the newly developed Anggun Kirana series by PKNS oozes contemporary appeal and high functionality. The 3-storey link homes present a modern and chic faรงade with carefully designed interiors that exude style and practicality. One is welcomed by a 2-car porch neatly tiled in light coloured porcelain tiles whilst the main front door opens up into a double-volume concept living room sporting interior decoration in earthy tones of brown, beige and grey with occasional splashes of bright colours. The foyer features a unique textured feature wall with abstract designs framed by a giant wooden frame. A futuristic chandelier hangs from the high ceiling in abstract shapes, to match the feature wall. The foyer extends into the living room which presents an ash-coloured L-shaped sofa that is complemented by colourful throw cushions and an elegant low wooden coffee table, both fronting a wall-mounted television set against a mirrored wall defined by vertical lines. The alcove plaster ceiling over the living room holds an elegant centrepiece lighting in cylindrical shapes, complemented by downlights. A bright orange coloured arm chair sits in the corner whilst a low cabinet rests under the TV. White drapes hang over the clear glass sliding door filtering the bright afternoon sun which gently filters through the drapes to brighten up the living area. The highlight of the house is a unique centre courtyard that sports green natural decoration, carpet grass, rattan chairs and plants. Creating a picture perfect setting, the open-air courtyard 9

is framed into its position by foldable clear glass doors that open into 3 spaces – the living room, dining room, and the corridor leading into the dry kitchen. An elevator is discreetly tucked away in the corner near the staircase. The dining room sports double-volume ceiling and presents an elegant and rustic ambience. Taking centrestage in this space is the large eight-seat wooden table accompanied by green-coloured chairs. A shelf sits against one wall whilst another wall sports a textured feature wall with vertical lines and silver butterflies creating a formation against a brown backdrop. and breakfast bar with overhanging cabinets on one side, as well as an oven, hob and a sink. A multi-level shelf holding ornate decorations adds character to the kitchen. Tucked away in the corner behind a sliding glass door is a spacious wet kitchen sporting white-coloured cabinets, hood, hob and sink, set against light-brown tiled walls. The wet-kitchen is highly functional without odd corners and there is plenty of space to move around. A maid’s room with an attached bathroom sits beside the wet kitchen. Walking up the stairs, one is greeted by a family hall on the first floor surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the open-air courtyard below. Louvered windows present a retro-theme whilst brightening the space and creating excellent ventilation. The family hall is decorated with elegant furnishing

which include dark-brown shelves against one wall, a wall-mounted television, a sofa, a green armchair in the corner and a set of multi-level side tables. A balcony provides a scenic view of the neighbourhood. A study room is tucked away in a corner sporting a bright green sofa, shelves lining one wall, a carpet in the middle of the room and a feature wall adorned with a world map. A study table faces the feature wall. Next to the study room is a bedroom with a white and beige theme. A queen-sized bed is complemented by an elegant feature wall with linear lines and mirrors. The room is simple yet elegant and has an attached bathroom, browncoloured wardrobes and a vanity top. The second floor features 3 spacious rooms – a boy’s room, a girl’s room and a master bedroom.

Modern Chic Turn Design Interior transforms a 3-storey corner link house in Lake Fields (Dale), Kuala Lumpur, into a spacious abode using sustainable materials in an innovative way PHOTOS BY JASON CHAN NL

T

he brief from the client was to create an aesthetically pleasing living space using today’s mainstream sustainable materials in an innovative way, and in a style that will not be outdated. The materials used should have low maintenance and used in such a way to create interest. Once the team decided on the Modern Chic design concept, the challenge was to match the style of the 5-bedroom, 4-bathroom house in such a way as to create a harmonious composition where all the elements come together. The main living area with its double volume celling was an inspiration for the team to use exposed trusses as the highlight in the space, giving it a suave industrial vibe. The gleaming gold globe pendant lights capture the beauty of this living space while the tall clear glass windows and doors draw in natural light and at the same time provide unobstructed view of the manicured garden outside. Vertical blinds instead of drapes are used on the windows and doors for greater convenience and versatility. The feature wall is a striking green jasper marble in dark, dense tones that contrasts beautifully with the lighter coloured flooring and sofa set. The use of straight lines and pops of colours in the furniture and dÊcor lend a gentle contemporary mood while a gigantic carpet, with a floral print pattern in yellow, white and grey, sits pretty in this space. The colourful rug also lends a playful mood that sets the tone for the rest of the house.

The living area opens to the modern kitchen-cum-dining area where dark grey and black glossy surfaces are complemented by blue furnishings. The white ceiling with its blackpainted grooves add a sense of drama while a classic-style dining table polished in a silvery grey colour is contrasted with contemporary blue dining chairs. Flights of stairs lead to the upper floors. An open wooden box was added to cover the upstairs landing to give it a warm appeal. The sprawling master bedroom projects a minimalist style. The customised bed, paired with edgy and geometric style pendant lights, a faux animal skin rug and a black leather armchair, collectively exude an eccentric ambiance. The walk-in wardrobe has exposed shelving which makes it easy to reach for items. Keeping the walls and ceiling palette clean, the wood flooring provides for an overall pleasing and warmer appeal. u

ALL THINGS NATURAL

Natural materials like raffia, bamboo, rattan and sea grass are becoming popular. The flexibility of these materials means they can be used to create a wide range of products – oversized baskets, pendant lampshades, decorative covers and tableware, among others – for a variety of environments. While some are ideal for your garden, they look their best when bringing the outdoors in.

Sculptural Staircase Anchors Triangular Home IMAGES COURTESY OF HI-MACS

20

F

ORM Design Architecture recently worked with HI-MACS to architecturally transform an old, impractical and disused office building in London. Described as “a staircase with rooms,” the result is a modern home built as a pied-àterre in the city centre. The small triangular footprint of the two-bedroom house predetermined its seemingly simple spatial arrangement. The residence features one main room on each of the five floors, topped by a terrace on the roof. The kitchen, dining room, bedrooms and a fully functional basement are integrated within Flatiron House, where the sculptural staircase is the backbone. The interiors are characterised by the apparent spaciousness of the rooms; the feeling of modernity and brightness come from the whiteness of its walls and acrylic stone surfaces. “The vertical spatial flow between the levels, provided by a signature staircase, feels natural and fluid,” says Mike Neale of HI-MACS. The banister, made from acrylic stone, reinforces this flow of movement. It rises like a twisted and folded ribbon through the five storeys of the house, framing a 46-foot view from the glass roof to the basement. “The triangular floor shape meant that the banister of the staircase had to twist and rise up at a very steep angle from its inner edge, followed by a sharp bend,” Neale says. “HI-MACS was one of the few materials that could take this shape, due to its ability to be bent at a very small radius.” 21

22

A MODERN AND FUNCTIONAL KITCHEN

The U-shape, curves and clean lines of the kitchen counter is perhaps the most eye-catching space in the apartment after the staircase. The modern look is reflected in the large work surface made of acrylic stone that incorporates a hob and sink, complete with large overhead cabinets for storage. A new curved window with double-glazing which follows the curve of the building was added. A perforated and curved screen was added to allow light to illuminate the kitchen-cum-dining area.

RELAXATION AREAS

On the rooftop is a small terrace, a quiet space to kick up the feet and take in the surrounding scene. The basement has been converted into a functional place for entertainment and relaxation thanks to the huge flat screen TV and backlit lockers to store wine. As stated by the architects of FORM Design Architecture, the objective was to create living spaces that can be enjoyed naturally and instinctively – pleasant spaces with a harmonious sense of simplicity that create a positive and stimulating living environment. u

TOTAL FLEXIBILITY & CLEVER STORAGE SOLUTIONS

F

or most city people who live in apartments and small houses, the kitchen, which is considered the heart of the home, can be a problem when space is tight. To overcome this, IKEA recently introduced its new kitchen system called METOD which can be adapted to any space as it is composed of a modular system of different sizes. You can create different combinations of cabinets, drawers, doors and organisers and, what’s even better, you can squeeze the most out of the space you have regardless of the size or shape of the room.

To make up for the small footprint of this kitchen, the full height of the room is used by stacking cabinets on top of each other. Combined with glass doors and cabinet lighting, you can create a unit that’s both practical and beautiful. On the opposite wall is a simple wall shelf instead of wall cabinets. This opens the space and provides access to frequently used items. Additional open storage is added in the form of an open cabinet and a trolley.

28

feature The entire height of the room is used and wall cabinets are tailored to the sloping ceiling. Wall cabinets of different heights, widths and depths are combined while doors have been used sparingly. Dark frames make the doors and stored items pop.

Wood-finish cabinets in this kitchen contrast with the fresh white counter top. Clear glass is used on the door of some of the overhead wall cabinets which allows you to see what’s inside the cabinets.

FINDING YOUR STUFF

One of the most frustrating things in the kitchen is not being able to find a particular ladle or spoon just when you need it. These organisers with integrated drawers are ideal for every kitchen item, even if you have a ton of stuff.

You can even take a basic kitchen and make it pop. Modern white fronts create a fresh feeling while accent doors on the wall cabinets create a vibrant focal point. The addition of legs turns a couple of base cabinets into a stylish piece of furniture while lending a modern airy feel of the room.

arren Morgan and his team from the award-winning Designer Kitchen by Morgan company were told by the client to use the ovens from the old kitchen, include a large island with seating and create a visually attractive feature around the main entrance doorway. “We extended the mezzanine introducing a bulkhead above the window area which obscured the top of the units from above. This allowed mood uplighting and task lighting to be introduced. The junction between the new bulk head and mezzanine created a natural break between the entrance door and the kitchen and we used this to define our approach,” said Morgan, the director of Designer Kitchen by Morgan which is regarded as one of the most innovative design companies in the UK. A large solid ash pivot door was introduced to enhance the existing entrance. The angular solid ash frame was designed to absorb the angular nature of the surrounding architecture. “The aesthetic impact of the pivot door was balanced with the inclusion of a matching solid ash barn door on the opposite side of the room with a solid ash tambour door helping to balance the look whilst providing the client with a small appliance garage,” he said. The island was designed with simplicity in mind with subtle hidden layers helping to deliver impact. The waterfall worktops create a monolithic presence from various angles which is purposefully contradicted by using heavily chamfered edges along the front of the island to create a floating appearance. “The holistic

impact is enhanced further by detaching the cabinetry from all surrounding surfaces and including LED lighting which can create a glowing effect at night, said Morgan. The inclusion of a custom-made Gutmann Abajo extraction system delivers unobtrusive functionality, enhancing the look further. The recessed grip handles were made from solid ash and designed to punctuate the design in a unique way, purposefully falling short of the door lengths and penetrating through into the tall cabinetry from the low level units. This required gables, doors and handles to be individually specified to create the look. Some of the drawer fronts were oversized so as to conceal the large filler required to absorb the angles presented by the walls. Blum Legrabox drawers and inserts were carefully programmed to deliver functional performance and these drawers helped to deliver a crisp and contemporary interior finish. u

n entering the apartment, one is struck by the vivid blue of the metal hoarding cladding the walls that extend around the corner to the living area. Metal perforated screens provide a ventilated facade for shoe storage beside the main door. The fun and colourful style in the hall, synonymous with the bachelorette's personality, sets the tone for the rest of the house – toys, art and wacky objects come together on full display here. “Imagining the whole space as a street, we brought in humble materials like concrete, cement screed, bricks (white-washed and stripped down) and pavers to tell the story,” said the architects. The street lamp post lends a whimsical touch to the ‘alfresco cafe’ dining corner while the graphical patterns on the rug in front of the sofa reminds one of a collage of ceramic tiles on the floor. Prints by UK street artist Eelus inject the interiors with bright pop hues. A window opening on the kitchen wall offers a glimpse of the action in the hall and illuminates the cooking space while the accent square tiles provide visual stimuli with the seemingly handdrawn graphics.

In one of the three rooms, the design is a tribute to Piet Mondrian’s compositions with red, yellow and blue. Black strips run in an ‘organised disarray’ around the room, creating the sense one is living inside a painting. The colourful elements at the TV wall are made up of Lego base plates. In the study room, doors with various looks group together in a seemingly haphazard arrangement on the overhead storage unit, a move which is inspired by the works of contemporary Swedish artist Michael Johansson. “A practical flip-up table top next to the built-in daybed can be kept away to save space in the small room when not in use,” said the architects. The terracotta colour on the walls and ceiling evokes a sense of being surrounded by old factory bricks, offering an intimate environment to read and work. The master suite has an organic feel, sporting patterned wood planks and green shaggy carpet which mimics vertical greens. A special effects paint provides a cement look-alike finish to the walls, one of which is decorated with works by seminal pop artist Peter Blake and French street artist Dran. In the adjoining bathroom as well as the common bathroom, images by Italian painter Piero Fornasetti add an element of surprise, an indication that bathrooms can also be fun. u 36

S

upercool Creative Culture Sdn Bhd (SSC), founded in 2004 by Royce Loy Chai Meng and Chai Yuen Hey, has been creating waves in the residential and commercial sector by providing a whole new meaning to the term refined modern living. With over 10 years of experience, SCC has been beautifying residential and commercial properties by providing a comprehensive range of services that include home improvement and roofing. Staying true to its design philosophy of using only high quality sustainable materials, SCC incorporates the classical Balinese concept of island resort lifestyle into the homes. Regarded as one of the leading specialist in roofing in Malaysia, SCC’s main areas of expertise are building pergolas, roof tiles, gazebos, polycarbonate awnings, laminating glass skylight, timber decks, fences and railings.

40

Royce Loy, the Managing Director of SCC, said that the company, which has its head office in Puchong Permai, Selangor, and a branch office each in Seremban and Johor Bahru, is committed to giving its customers great value for money. As such, only quality materials are used. Natural hardwoods such Chengal, Balau and Resak are used for building decks and pergolas. The timber is treated to withstand humidity, at the same time it is water resistant and durable enough to be exposed to direct sunlight. Timber pergolas, which can be combined with laminated roofing, polycarbonate sheets, help prevent direct sunlight streaming into the house. More importantly, timber, whether used in pergolas or flooring, is eco-friendly and adds beauty and character to any area. SCC also provides polycarbonate roofing, laminated glass skylight, roof tiles and fences and railings, all of which can be customised to suit the budget of the home owner and the overall architecture of the house. “We have an extensive range of design options, colours, textures and material to give our customers the best,” said Loy. The passion, dedication and the persistence to provide the best in home improvement for the customers, have earned for SCC several local and international accolades. Art of Lighting Lighting is art. Interior designers do a balancing act to achieve a practical and beautiful bedroom lighting arrangement with every factor touching multiple points. Placement, intensity and colour are elements that can make all the difference between waking up to a bright and cheerful room in the morning or basking in low and mysterious mood lighting before drifting off to sleep. Here are some ideas on the art of lighting up your very private space.

Bringing Spaces Alive Texture, colour, light & content come together to create a design statement

L

uminous textile, created by Philips Lighting and launched at the recent ARCHIDEX 16 for the South East Asian market, is a revolutionary ambient solution to uplift interior spaces using light, texture and dynamic content. It is so flexible that you can even change it in an instant to reflect every mood. Luminous textile integrates multi-coloured LEDs seamlessly within fabric panels. You can choose the number of panels and the size, and arrange them any way you please in your interior space. Images can be selected from the Philips online portfolio or you can upload your own content for a personal look and feel. With a mere touch of a button on a remote control, a mobile phone or tablet, you can change the atmosphere in a room. “Beyond the purpose of illumination, we are focused on developing products and systems that provide end users and consumers new lighting experiences and dynamic ambience,” said Alok Ghose, Managing Director for Lighting, Philips Malaysia. The company’s participation at ARCHIDEX 16 is to give end-users, designers, architects and engineers more ideas and insights into the possibilities of digital lighting. The combination of elements used in each luminous textile panel creates acoustic properties that help to reduce noise and soften echoes, making it ideal for use in office reception areas, restaurants, hospitals and airport lounges. There is also the Luminous carpet which uses cutting-edge LEDs. The carpet connects easily with an electrical and IT system and with a simple setup, it can display personal messages or subtle signage, interacting with guests, creating a lively impression on everyone who enters the room, office lobby or building. It is also attention-grabbing and can be used not only as a navigation tool, but also to provide dynamic information, such as live data feeds and useful animations. u 47

nspired by the glamour of the 1950’s and the natural elements of Scandinavian designs, interior designer Beatriz Silveira decided to incorporate white and neutral colours on the walls, floors, lounge ceiling and in all the public areas of the hotel. This colour palette not only gives a clean, airy look but also creates a greater sense of space. Silveira also injected a touch of luxury by using Aristea marble and natural oak to contrast with bronze, a combination that gives the eight-floor boutique hotel a warm character. She also used a mix of Danish and Italian designer furniture and lights to add character to the interior spaces. As Silveira explained, aesthetics and functionality go hand in hand. A space can exude strength and personality while creating a sense of harmony and warmth. The key, she said, is balance and the selection of each piece of artefact and furniture. Apart from the well-appointed double, superior and deluxe standard rooms, Vincci Centrum hotel also has Junior Suites with a small living room, a balcony with a view over the city, as well as a special VIP room. u
