ultigenerational homes are becoming a trend in many households today where more than two generations stay together under a single roof. To help homeowners get an idea of how they can accommodate and bring the different generations living in a house closer together while maintaining the option of a close private space, HOMEDEC is showcasing the 3-GEN Living & Design Showhome at the annual HOMEDEC Parts 1 & 2 exhibition at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The life-sized double-storey showhome with a built-up area of 384sqm, and displayed at Hall 5, is designed by Chan Mun Inn and Wong Pei San, directors of Essential Design Integrated Sdn Bhd, a multi award-winning local interior design company. In designing the unit, the duo used the feedback from their clients with three generations. The kitchen, living room and dining area were identified as the places where family members interacted more frequently. The duo worked towards making these high intensity areas into multi-functional spaces. Permeability is achieved by breaking down solid walls, large windows and ledges, but at the same time each space is designed and connected closely with each other. Also in this issue, we have articles on a range of subjects. As Christmas is around the corner, get inspired by our Christmas tree ideas. The selection includes DIY, rustic, space-saving, contemporary and avant-garde Christmas trees. Want to create a spa-like feel in your bathroom the inexpensive way? Turn to page 22 on how you can use scented candles, bathsalts, essential oils and green plants to create that ambiance. Happy reading and see you at HOMEDEC exhibition Parts 1 & 2.

he architects designed a concrete eggcrate structure to envelope the house in order to keep the heat out but draw sunlight in to create comfortable spaces within. “The perforated nature of this envelope also allows the existing overgrowth to grow into the volume of the house, thus softening the boundary of inside and outside.” The egg-crate structure which stretches from the ground and extends into the home’s ceiling areas, is built of in-situ concrete at the depth of 900mm. The concrete fins of 150mm thickness reinforce the structure by framing openings of various sizes at a controlled rhythm to further facilitate the regulation of light intensity inside. The house, designed for a family of five, including a grandmother, sits on a grassy slope. “The design takes advantage of the sloping terrain to keep the dampness and humidity out within a tropical environment. It also keeps the house airy and dry,” the architects said. As such, the living areas are elevated from the ground giving the occupants a view of the surrounding trees.

The main spaces – living, dining, kitchen and the pool – are placed at the entry level; the bedrooms are placed on the upper floor while a garage and service area sit on the lower ground. The main approach to the house is via a bridge flanked by mature Albizia trees. From the entrance, a relatively narrow walkway, adjacent to a stairway and an internal courtyard, leads to the open living area. Lovely patterned shadows are cast across the pool room as light filters through the concrete shell. Looking beyond the pool and a semi-enclosed garden, one is greeted with a clear and extended view of the green foliage. On the upper floors where the bedroom are, windows are specially designed to offer views of the foliage which also provide some privacy. u

itting pretty in the heart of the French capital city, The Shift is a modern, contemporary abode designed by Nicolas Berthou, the founder designer of B3R2 Design, a Parisbased feng shui design studio with a main goal to “create harmony in your residence”. The design of the Parisian apartment, Bertahou said, reflects the home owner’s personality through his own life changes both on the professional and personal levels. “He was leaving a very rational, cartesian, immaterial work environment to join a world of concrete creation and achievement.” Once Berthou had identified which feng shui school of thought best suited the owner and his dwelling, he (Berthou) set about incorporating the principles and elements into the design. Interior decoration, said Berthou, is a discipline that strives to arrange spaces suited
to the personality of the home owner, just like Feng Shui whose end is to enable the occupants of a place to express both their personal and professional potential in full. “The perfectly complementary nature of these two disciplines allows B3R2 Design to open up its projects to new possibilities by bridging the world of decoration, design, architecture on the one hand with that of the well-being and health on the other.” As Feng shui is primarily about the flow of energy and how placement of objects within a space affects the energy flow of a living space, and their influence a person’s own energy flow, Berthou decided to use the principle of Yin and Yang (one of feng shui fundamental principles) to give the abode concrete substance. “We did this by interlacing very structured flat tints of colour with a very freely inspired decorative painting, and used some very

urban decorative elements as well as very classic pieces.” In order to accomplish that, the designer’s first choice was to use healthy or eco-friendly materials such as lime or mineral painting. “To us it is vital to use of materials and techniques that are sound and respectful of the environment. It is a vital part of our effort to reduce our carbon footprint.” Mineral Decorative painting is used in the cloud ceiling paint in the bedroom, a yellow bamboo granite painting in the kitchen and bark painting in the dressing room and in the bathroom. Berthou also used sculptures and artefacts placed in strategic positions throughout the apartment. As for lighting, there is a made to measure Murano chandelier, a Diva suspension by Celine Wright, the Etta Brass finish wall lamps by Delightfull and Chipperfield table lamp by Kos Lighting. u 36

Copper In Your Home Here are some ways to accent your house with the chic yet industrial copper look.
M
etallics have always been a favourite in the interior design world, with their strong finish and hues effortlessly adding that touch of luxury to any product. This rich and warm colour is the ‘gold of 2016’ – it offers a different level of depth compared to the brushed chrome of the past, and lacks the over-indulgent feeling of gold.
The shine from the strong metal design of the pendant light creates an instant level of glamour. Team with Mad Men Sky Scraper rug for ultimate luxury and to complete the look. The rug has copper threads running through it that will be picked up beautifully with the light, and be accentuated by this gorgeous lamp shade.
Another stunning rug that takes advantage of the copper trend, is the gorgeous cooper rug in denim. It’s a wonderfully unique piece that combines patchwork denim, overlaid with strips of cowhide in a copper tone that shimmers in the light. Team this beautiful piece with a copper coffee table to tie together your copper décor and bring out the subtle shades in this stunning rug. 44
You can also include copper pendant lights to give your kitchen or your dining area a touch of class. Pendant lights also look great in bedrooms.
You’re looking for a muted but equally fabulous part in this trend, use a small feature of the room to bring out copper tones such as red-browns. This rug shows how copper can be done in a big way, or a more affordable and muted way – and still look fabulous!
Include subtle features such as copper candle holders, placemats or plant pots to accentuate other complementary shades and make your copper interior décor pop.

Vibrant Colours
Inspired by the colours of India, Dulux shows how you can incorporate some of the colour trends into your home and spice it up for the upcoming Deepavali celebrations
D
eepavali, the Festival of Lights, which signifies the victory of light over darkness or good over evil is celebrated by Hindus all over the world. Some rush to complete minor renovations around the home, while others buy new furniture to give their home a brand new look.

m An easy and affordable
way to transform any space in your home for this festive season is by using colours. Drawing inspiration from the ancient Mogul palaces of Rajasthan, warm neutral colours is a great palette for any living or dining room. To ensure that space feels light and bright, pick colours on the lighter side of the warm neutral colour palette.
m You can also add a touch of the romantic Taj Mahal by incorporating the white from the marble or the blue tones from the Yamuna River located next to it. As these classic colours work well across your home and for spaces that are slightly smaller, be sure to use Dulux Light & Space. The technology found in this paint reflects up to twice as much light, making rooms brighter and more spacious. Similarly, to the warm neutral colour palette, these classic colours can go well with your existing furniture. However, these colours allow you a little more freedom to go outside your comfort zone when it comes to picking patterns and colours for your accessories. Take this change to explore and go wild with bold patterns when picking items such as photo frames or throw pillows.
m Gold to some might seem
like an intimidating colour to pick when it comes to interior design. However, it can be easily integrated into your home when done strategically. A wonderful way to do this is by having a feature wall using this colour or creating a gold Indian motif mural. Monarch Gold was announced as Colour of the Year 2016 by AkzoNobel and it is the perfect hue of gold to be used for your feature wall. This colour breathes positives vibes into any room while making it feel cozy. 55

It's where reputable designers introduce to visitors the ideas of space planning,” he said. Both Chan and Wong noted that there is a rising trend where three generations live together under one roof due to factors such as cultural expectations, finance and time. Wong, who has 15 years of experience in the industry, pointed out that conventional design of homes need to evolve to take into account the multiple needs and requirements of different age groups and lifestyle requirements. An open plan sleeping area is located next to the play area with a hidden slide and stairs that connects directly to the grandchildren's bedroom above. The bedrooms of the children and the parents are on the upper floor. This sleeping area also opens out into a bench and a hammock area. Instead of a conventional floor, an open nylon net is used to form a hammock that hangs over the kitchen and dining area. “The hammock can be used for resting, reading or just sitting around to chat. orking together with cepezed and the Antea Group, HofmanDujardin, a Dutch architectural and design firm, recently gave a modern look to two existing high-rise office towers in the heart of The Hague. The Helicon and Castalia buildings, known as De Resident, houses the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment. The renovation was part of the strategy to downsize the Dutch government and the transition to new ways of working. In the new design these two building are connected by a light and transparent atrium designed by cepezed. From the atrium, people

can enter the two ministries or the vibrant petit cafÊ on the ground floor of the Castalia building. New stairs, bridges and voids give access to the lower five floors which house a variety of meeting areas, work zones and restaurants. The fifth floor of both the buildings are dedicated to the offices of the ministries while the regular offices are on the 6th to the 20th floor. The topmost floor of Castalia is a shared meeting space which offers an expansive view of the city below. The original Resident offices were designed by American architect Michael Graves and Dutch architect Sjoerd Soeters in the 1990’s. Both architects are known for their Post-modernist designs. During the design process, the team from HofmanDujardin noticed surprising resemblances

between the existing interior of Castalia and famous Dutch art and architecture. Inspired by Graves’s enlarging of Dutch classic artists such as Vermeer, De Hoog and Berlage, HofmanDujardin continued on this concept of bringing colour and personality into the interior design. Over 30 paintings were selected on the theme ‘health and leisure’ for the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport and on the theme ‘work’ for the offices of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment. Each of the selected paintings was enlarged to the size of the floor plans and divided in a grid of 50cm x 50cm floor carpet tiles. To match the richness of colour found in the original masterpieces, 70 additional colours were developed by HofmanDujardin in collaboration with a carpet supplier. The result? 300 dynamic and stunningly colourful floor patterns that give each floor and space a unique and personal atmosphere. u 66
