With the View to Take Malaysian Interior Designing to Next Level PREVIEW MIIP AWARDS 2018
President’s Note
Dear Members,
Janet Lee President, Malaysian Interior Industry Partners Association
We are now half way through the year and I am happy to note that we are working towards promoting and achieving the objectives of our association which includes increasing our membership, having a stronger voice when it comes to matters concerning the construction industry and working closely with the relevant Government agencies. At the recent AGM we made an amendment to the Constitution to add one more ordinary committee member which will bring the total number of ordinary committee members to seven. Over the past one year, we had successfully organised industry dialogues, events and seminars, factory visits, tournaments as well as networking and social activities for our members. We have also set up a MIIP Members WhatsApp chat group which will make it easier and faster for us to inform our members of important events. We had also successfully organised a study tour to Macau. About 20 members participated in the three-day trip where we had first views of some of the latest innovations and creative use of colours, light, metal, stone, glass and other materials in the interior décor. I feel motivated by the amount of interior fit-out potential in Macau. It was a good eye-opener and bonding experience as well. For the second half of the year, we will be organising visits to some of our members’ showrooms and factories. There will also be trade talks and for the first time, we will be organising a table tennis tournament. Our biggest event for the year is the upcoming 3rd biennial MIIP Interior Industry Awards to be held in October. I would like to encourage all members to participate by sending in their entries before the closing date, 30th August. We will close the year with the much awaited Year End Party.

Chairing the Green Agenda From furniture to carbon footprint, a chat with Artmatrix Technology Sdn Bhd CEO Herbert Koh reveals a man who is committed to the green cause.
T
he 13-year-old company designs, manufactures and supplies ergonomic seatings, system furniture as well as other accessories in answer to today’s changing office needs. It also offers solutions for interior design, space planning, project management and installation services. “It was an easy industry to break into,” said CEO Herbert Koh looking back to the days when he grouped like-minded friends and started the company. “Designing chairs and tables requires passion.” However Artmatrix decided to choose the narrow path and launched its green initiative since early on. In 2009, Artmatrix clinched the ISO 14001 certification and kicked off its green journey. In 2011, it was the first office furniture company in Malaysia to receive the Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) licence. This certification scheme follows the ISO 14024 standard and is internationally recognised by Global Ecolabelling Network. “GECA has strict standards. They look at not only our materials and product’s emission but they assess the entire sustainability of the products’ supply chain, which includes material processing, end of life management and even human rights compliance,” Mr Koh said. Beginning as a small office furniture company in Malaysia, Artmatrix grew quickly to become a mid-tier firm with a presence in five continents. When asked about the secret to its success, Mr Koh said the answer lies in producing products with no liability and with high standards. “To do this, collaboration with the right people is important. Partnering with industry experts has become one of our strategies to produce high quality products.” He also added that each product is the result of a tested design process that has passed through

creative intuition, feasibility and industrial analysis. This is why clients are confident with Artmatrix’s products. In general, the export market accounts for 55% of Artmatrix’s sales. Mr Koh takes charge of the export market while Vice President – Sales, Mr Francis Lau, focuses on the local market. Mr Koh said the green certificates are crucial. “The green stamp has qualified us for tendering. So in a sense we are equals with the big players.” To satisfy market demand, he added that Artmatrix’s products are also certified with Malaysia’s green recognition scheme MyHIJAU Mark and the Singapore Green Building Product certificate.
“Going green is not just another office trend,” he said emphatically adding that it is the company’s responsibility as a corporate citizen to address critical environmental issues and to combat climate change. “Sustainability is the keyword here. We must do something to preserve our environment so that the future generations can enjoy the same resources we have now. Besides, we also design our products to be completely recyclable, so that it can have a new life at the end of its lifespan.” According to Mr Koh, greening is also healthier as the materials used are eco-friendly and harmless to humans. In Artmatrix, all green furniture has undergone emission

testing under ANSI/BIFMA standards, and are verified for low formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). “With all these, our products comply with LEED and GBI requirements, which is advantageous for tendering in Green Building projects”. The green effort does not stop here, Artmatrix takes a step further by measuring the carbon footprint of its products through the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). “We want to know how much CO2 is released to produce a product, so we work with Intertek to assess our product’s life cycle,” said Mr Koh. “Next we want to see how we can reduce these amounts. For example, our E-Stilts workstation’s readings have dropped from 105.9 to 59.5kg CO2 eq per user when we substitute an imported material with locally available material.” “This is a Green Building too,” he added, listing out the features that qualified his HQ for GBI Certified status. The building is a testament to Artmatrix’s eco-commitment, from designing sustainable products to observing green practices in as many aspects of their product operations. This year, Artmatrix renewed their GBI certificate and gained fivestar ratings for its Building Energy Intensity. The company was also honoured with the
Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award for Notable Achievement in Environmental Performance in 2015. “We will continue with our green efforts and join forces with UN Global Compact to embark on our sustainability journey.” It is also Artmatrix’s vision to be part of the global sustainability initiatives to align its business with UN Sustainability Development Goals. With vast experience in project management, Mr Koh said one of the most memorable projects he has done was the University of Reading Malaysia project, which clinched the MIIP Gold Award in 2016. “This project was led by Francis. When we started planning we had to consider both
aesthetics and functionality,” he said, adding that a detailed study of individual activity space is needed before designing furniture to ensure optimum space performance. Moving forward Artmatrix, which has carried out projects in 22 countries and has showrooms in Dubai, India, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, is looking to expand its market. “We have a strong presence in Asean, and are currently exploring Myanmar and Sri Lanka. We aim to increase our market share and to design more trendy products.” Whilst exploring different regions, Artmatrix moved into e-commerce to reach an even larger market in 2017. It revamped its website to host an online store and to increase its brand value. “E-commerce is a whole new kettle of fish. We have to start thinking about flat packing and easy-to-assemble products. This means new product design,” said Mr Koh, adding that R&D effort must align with the company’s future approach in digital marketing. Entering into the digital era, Artmatrix uses social media as its main tool to convey information to the public and stakeholders. From e-brochure to product animation, digitisation allows valuable information to be shared instantly via online platform. This reduces printing needs which is part of Artmatrix’s commitment to environmental conservation.

he more than 20 member delegation led by MIIP President Janet Lee and Vice President Steven Poh, arrived just in time for an invigorating lunch after which they ventured into Macau’s historical sites to view the revered St. Paul’s Ruins, among other picturesque relics of the Portuguese Empire’s heyday rule – Senado Square, Macau Tower and Our Lady of Penha Chapel, among others. The delegation was contented with the itinerary for including this part of the city as they got to see and appreciate the early influences on architecture from both the East and the West, prior to visiting Macau city centre.

The modern and glamorous part of Macau city centre is noted for its sprawling ecosystem of casinos, hotels, and nightclubs and the delegation visited some of the top hotels and restaurants as well as other social spaces. What was interesting was that these tastefully decorated social spaces were in fact an excellent case study on how light, colours, mirrors, metal, carpets and other forms of soft furnishing were artistically used to create stunning interior dÊcor. The hotels visited were The Galaxy Macau, The Parisian, the Venetian Macau, Morpheus and Nuwa Macau, among others. At these resorts the members saw unique, innovative and creative use of surface cladding materials applied to walls and floors. The 5-star Venetian Macau is inspired by the legendary Las Vegas Strip and is a remarkable reimagination of the canal city of Venice. Its rich interior fit outs and claddings, high vaulted embellished ceiling and a large golden globe-shaped water fixture that welcomes guests to the hotel, are nothing short of mindboggling. This resort is surrounded by the area’s sightseeing attractions, including Cotai Strip, City of Dreams and Casino which are within walking distance. The Nuwa Macau is part of the City of Dreams in the Cotai Strip, a large holiday complex with a casino and a large shopping arcade. This modern property boasts a

contemporary look. The hotel’s lobby is marked by an emphasis on straight lines and Oriental flourishes – thin rows of green bamboo, Chinese bronzed vases and modern Asian-style paintings. Also in the City of Dreams are the Bubble Fountain and the Dancing Water Theatre. The delegation also visited the Morpheus, the flagship hotel of the City of Dreams deluxe entertainment and casino complex. Designed by the late Dame Zaha Hadid, the 39-story structure is the world’s first high-rise supported by a free-form steel exoskeleton. The focal point of this architectural feat is the three breath-taking voids that traverse the

centre of the hotel, shaping its skyline into two distinct towers, connected by a sky bridge. Every feature reflects and refracts light for a transcendent experience. There was also a lunch networking session with the Macau ASEAN International Chamber of Commerce (MAICC), Eddy Chan, President of Macau Building Materials Enterprise Chamber of Commerce, Winnie Wan, Director of of Macau Brand Enterprise Chamber of Commerce and Penn Vong of Malaysia Macau Malaysia Chamber of Commerce. This networking session was made possible with the co-operation of Ezzwanee Ahman, the Trade Commissioner/Consul
from the Consulate General of Malaysia Trade Section, Matrade Hong Kong. MIIP members also gathered at The Parisian for a group photo with the Eiffel Tower. Standing at 525-feet, it offers fantastic aerial views of the hottest spots in the area. Parisian art and history is reflected throughout the hotel with reproductions of 17th and 18thcentury antique rugs, chandeliers, silk textiles, chinoiserie porcelains, as well as a reception area inspired by the prestigious Palace of Versailles. For the delegation, the trip to Macau was an enriching experience and certainly worth a revisit.
Macau Trade Mission Feedback From Some Members Of The Delegation “A big thank you to the President Janet, Michael and the committee members for organising such a joyful study trip. We totally enjoyed the entire time staying in Macau with the wonderful team members and all the people we met. We surely benefited a lot from this trip and look forward to more such trip in the future. Thanking everyone for making the trip a tremendous success and a memorable one.” – Teh Kiong Hui, MD of Elyza’s
“Thank you Michael for organising and together with our President Janet and Vice President Steven for leading the delegation. It was a wonderful & fruitful trip.” – Tan Chin Tian, MD of Glass Network Sdn Bhd
“It was a great visit and thank you Cass for such wonderful arrangements.” – U Mun Liang
“We were given first hand information from the hotelier with regards to the design concept, materials used, the crucial data like capacity, sales turnover, even future expansion plans. All these would not have been possible without the coordination of Ezzwanee Ahmad from MATRADE Hong Kong, and Cassandra and Michael Choon of Archi-foam who contributed the plaques for the recipients. Not forgetting also, our tour guide Albert who gave us advance itinerary information for smooth transition from place to place. To all these nice people, thank you very much. Without your help this mission would not have been accomplished.” – Steven Poh, Vice President of MIIP & MD of Artesia Décor Sdn Bhd.

here is nothing more powerful than employees’ passion and initiative to make customers happy to spark long-lasting wordof-mouth about the company’s brand. In fact, the company or organisation is only as great as the people who embody the mission of the organisation, those who go above and beyond to see the company succeed and to make the customers happy. Indisputably, interior fit-out company, Can-I, understands this truth by trusting its employees to be the best spokespeople (the voice of the brand) for the company. “I know my people and what they can do. This is important, so that I know exactly where to place them so that they can optimise their

talents and potential,” says its founder, Tan Goo Can. This is evident with the company’s group of senior Project Directors who have been empowered to take the helm in driving a project from start to finish. Beginning at the tendering process, moving on to savvy negotiations, overlooking the full cycle of project management, to the final handover upon completion – each member of this team is a capable leader of calibre. Be it 25 years, 10 year or less, regardless of time in service, each member is well versed with the full scale of work on a project – often stepping in to engage in any one of the duties of their workforce, should the need arise. This is no different from when Tan learnt
the trade – hence, his legacy to Can-I is to build a team who can succeed him in the future and continue growing the company to greater heights. “There is a resonance of comradery in this team where each leader, with his own unique talent, often lends himself to another project, either on a quick site visit or for a short-term role within the project,” he says. Driven by their passion for satisfying results, these leaders are blind to the concept of rank and role whilst collaborating, where anyone from any rank can offer suggestions and solutions. “With each project growing in uniqueness, complexity and challenges, we have always met them with confidence, thanks to this value of openness in our team,” adds Tan.
Like the Project Management team, the Administrative Management team works along the principles of an open level movement and learning. “Should an individual show potential, talent and most importantly, interest, they are offered the chance to explore,” Tan says. “At Can-I the learning opportunities are endless, one could start at reception or dispatch and find themselves in any one of the ranks within our support network.” From the original members who started at the formative years of Can-I, to the recent recruits, all hands are on deck in supporting ongoing projects. As one cohesive unit, the details of every ongoing project is skilfully managed amongst the team members, forming the bridge that connects the worksite to all stakeholders in a seamless inflow and outflow of sourcing, planning, communicating and overall administration. Tan values creativity and finds every opportunity to nourish this spirit within Can-I. Apart from selecting team members
with attributes that match a project, Can-I has curated skilled technicians and craftsmen from Malaysia and the Asian region who have produced furniture and fixtures with impeccable finishes, earning the praise of clients and accolades of the public. Through years of industry experience, Can-I is aware of the demand of various custom fit and unique design elements that is called for in each project. As such, Can-I has dedicated resources within the company for equipment that aid the crafting process of its artisans and invested in various technology that allows its team to research and design innovative materials and solutions for their clients. Timber, metal, finishing, coating,

special effects and upholstery are some of the creation centres built and used by Can-I to fulfil the exquisite design elements of a project. To meet tight deadlines, Can-I has imported special machinery that improve speed and workmanship to provide better building solutions on site. Given his own humble beginnings in Taiping, Tan knows the socio-economic struggles of the society and he is committed to alleviate it by recruiting semi-skilled fresh graduates from local vocational institutions and unskilled indigenous communities in Malaysia. He also extends the same courtesy in all international worksites by providing shortterm employment to locals in the surrounding community. Even recruits with a troubled past with the law are given a second chance at Can-I to build a new career path. “All apprentices are trained to anticipate and resolve problems, produce creative and innovative designs, work more efficiently, generate high quality workmanship, communicate effectively, and transfer knowledge to fellow workers,” states Tan. Selected individuals are further groomed in various training and development programmes in the areas of safety, ethics, project administration and other skills training courses. These skilled workers are also counselled in mapping out a career progression that helps them chart their career growth. In short, Can-I’s secret to success is in the value it places upon its people.

Steven Poh, the Managing Director of Artesia Décor, says that the mission of the company is to change the way carpets are perceived and to make them an integral part of any decor. Artesia Décor has a highly skilled and talented team of carpet designers to help clients make the right choices in picking the best designs for them. The designers produce two dimensional designs that can be produced in a repeating pattern. The designs are created using computeraided design (CAD) systems, which are quicker and more accurate than handdrawing techniques. These designs are later transferred to computer-aided machinery (CAM) for production. The carpet designers, with the help of CAD and CAM, are able to produce new design possibilities that weren’t possible a few years ago. Carpet designing has made it possible to include different textures, patterns and flecks of colour that enhance the basic backgrounds of a carpet which in turn, give rooms a distinct personality of their own. “Carpet designing is an art and takes a keen eye,” explains Poh. “It’s important to be able to mash colours and designs accurately to make it look pleasing to the eye and can make or break an interior design. The team works closely with interior designers to come up with the perfect carpeting and wall fabrics for a dedicated space.” Carpet design has made it possible to use colour and texture to do so much more in terms of styling and fashion appeal. These aesthetically pleasing carpets also minimise soil and vacuum marks, thus making them a firm favourite with many clients.

Developing Executive Presence By Dr Victor SL Tan
I
n 2012, the Center for Talent Innovation research affirms that being a top performer isn’t enough: you must have executive presence (EP) in order to be considered for positions of authority. The research studied the core characteristics of leaders that matter most and their respective importance divided into categories – 67% Gravitas (how you act), 28% Communication (how you speak) and 5% (how you look).
WHAT IS EXECUTIVE PRESENCE Executive presence is what gravitates people towards a leader: the impression and perception the leader creates through his conduct, character and competency. It inspires and has a positive impact on people. It is not what one is born with. The behaviour that creates executive presence can be developed.
24
MALAYSIAN INTERIOR INDUSTRY PARTNERS
We can learn about executive presence not just from corporate leaders but also from powerful world leaders who have the characteristics to influence and change the world. KLSCC’s 5 “C”s EP model covers the two important factors: Gravitas and Communication which contribute to 95% of the executive presence.
CONFIDENCE Confidence is indeed a very attractive part of a person. Someone who speaks and acts confidently gets ahead further than one who is hesitant and uncertain. Confidence does not just come from knowledge, skills or experience. Often, it comes from self-belief and self-confidence. Such a leader has the poise, confidence and the EQ to handle the odds and overcome challenges. Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba.com has
a net worth of US41.8 billion as of June 2017 which makes him not only the richest man in China but in Asia as well. He shared the story of how he went against his 23 friends who opposed his idea of starting the company. It is his self-confidence and unwavering self-belief in overcoming failures and challenges that enabled him to bring Alibaba.com to where it is today. His confidence helped him win business deals with international leaders including presidents, prime ministers and top business leaders of the United States, Japan and ASEAN countries, among others.
CHARACTER Character is the authentic self – a reflection of what is real inside a person. It is about the core values, motives and the heart of the person. It is the moral and mental qualities that are distinguishable in a person.
THE 5 ‘C’S OF EXECUTIVE PRESENCE
CONFIDENCE
CREDIBILITY
CHARACTER
EXECUTIVE PRESENCE
COMMUNINICATION
In one of the many post-election analysis of Barack Obama winning the Presidency of United States, the Los Angeles Times pointed out that it was the character of Obama that helped him win against his opponent John McCain. The Los Angeles Times reported, “We need a leader who demonstrates thoughtful calm and grace under pressure, one not prone to volatile gesture or capricious pronouncement... as the Presidential race draws to its conclusion, it is Obama’s character and temperament that come to the fore. It is his steadiness. His maturity.”
COMPETENCY One of the reasons for the early success of Apple is the founder’s competency both in selling as well as the technical aspects of Apple’s products. He was the number one salesperson in his company. And yet he possessed great product and design competency. Steve had great influence and impact on his people through his superior technical competency as well as his total
COMPETENCY
commitment towards doing the very best – often to the point of perfection.
COMMUNICATION Another great characteristic of leaders with executive presence is the ability to captivate the attention of people through their powerful and influential communication skills. Such leaders can command a crowd and have the charisma to inspire people to change themselves and the world. Martin Luther King Jr is considered one of history’s best communicators of all times. In his speeches, he used varied oratorical and stylistic strategies – repetition, parallel structure, imagery, analogy and alliteration techniques to inspire people for action. He created lasting influence through his positive and urgent messages echoed through many generations and still hold its relevance. His words have a way to mesmerise through stimulating the imagination, touching hearts and transforming the mindsets of people. In his famous “I Have A Dream” speech, he used
great imagery, positive and urgent words: •“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.” • “Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.” • “Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.”
CREDIBILITY Credibility is about the trust and belief people have about a person. It comes from the practice of consistent values of integrity and honesty, besides one’s competency and commitment to what one is doing. It is about practicing by example, what you preach, walking your talk and your leadership. It is not what one says or what one plans to do that gives credibility. Credibility comes from the action, results and a track record what one has achieved. It is evidencebased judged from delivery rather than promise. The 2017 Edelman TRUST BAROMETER revealed that most CEO’s credibility dropped 12 points globally to an all-time low of 37%, plummeting in every country studied, while government leaders (29%) remain least credible. The corporate world can learn about leadership credibility from people like Gandhi, Nelson Mandela and Abraham Lincoln who practiced what they preached, and had the authentic “goodness” in them with proven trustworthiness from the promises that they had delivered. The importance of executive presence is substantiated with research conducted by Harvard University, the Carnegie Foundation and Stanford Research Center which attribute 85% of career success to soft skills of which executive presence is part of and only 15% to hard skills or technical skills. It is time to unleash your executive presence and start influencing people for positive action and results! Dr Victor SL Tan is the CEO of KL Strategic Change Consulting Group. He is an international authority on change management and has written 10 management books on change. For feedback on this article, please contact him at victorsltan@ klscc.com or at 012 3903168.

The Move From GST To SST As promised by Pakatan Harapan as part of its election manifesto, the hugely unpopular GST has been scrapped as of 1 June 2018 to be replaced by the Sales and Service Tax (SST) from 1 September. Will the move from GST to SST really make a difference to consumers, business and the country? By Datuk Seri Raymond Liew
T
he political tsunami of 9th May 2018 saw the Pakatan Harapan (PH) led by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir, sweep into power. Tun Dr Mahathir, who led the country during the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997 is once again at the helm of the country as he tries to steer it through rough economic times. One of PH’s election manifesto is to abolish the hugely unpopular Goods and Services Tax (GST) which was blamed as the cause for the rising prices that affected the middle and lower income Malaysians. The Ministry of Finance announced on 16th May 2018 that the GST will be zero-rated effective 1st June 2018.
Out GST, in SST! The GST will be replaced with the Sales and Service Tax (SST) which will be introduced on 1st September. The proposed tax rate for the SST is 10%. As SST has a “narrow tax base” the overall impact on business is not as drastic as GST since it only affects certain products and services and does not cascade across the board like the GST. The three month interim period between 0% GST and the onset of the SST is considered a tax holiday for consumers where they hope prices will hopefully come down. Hopefully the transition will be smooth for the businesses as there is an urgent need for frank dialogues and discussions between the Government and businesses. The Government
has always been pro-businesses and I am confident that the transition will be smooth for the businesses as there will be rounds of dialogues and discussions between the Government and businesses as the Government gathers views on SST.
Impact of SST
The change to 0% GST should improve the cash flow of businesses, especially SMEs. However, it may have little impact on bigger businesses which are primarily exporting their products or services. Consumers can expect food, beverage and retail prices to be lower. Property prices, especially newer houses, automobiles and air travel can also expect to be marginally lower. SST is expected to create more disposable income, which will translate into boosting consumer spending, spur private consumption and increase business activity. However, there is a possibility that products and services covered under SST will see an increase in prices. In the months between the abolition of GST and introduction of the SST, some unscrupulous parties may take advantage of the situation and engage in non-compliance and profiteering. It is very important that the Government carries out monitoring and enforcement activities effectively. Narrow tax base – one level of production Broad base – multilevels of production We applaud the Government’s efforts to strengthen the economy by whatever means. Cascading and compounding effect Cascading and compounding effect eliminated We hope that the SST will be a better tax system than the GST– that it will bring in the No relief for export Exports are zero rated and input tax is claimable extra revenue needed by the Government without causing hardship to the people. ELYZA’s Home Showroom Visit MIIP members were given an exclusive tour of Elyza’s factory-cum-showroom to learn about the limitless possibilities of what the company does best – supplying fabrics and making inspiring and beautiful window dressing since 1994. Earlier this year, several members of MIIP led by the President Janet Lee visited Elyza’s Window Dressing Centre (EWCC) in Seri Kembangan. EWCC is one of Malaysia’s largest suppliers of furnishing fabrics, curtains, blinds and motorised systems. At the 30,000 square feet Elyza’s

It is a chic and soulful wardrobe-style pad stocked with hundreds of soft furnishing items and accessories that seamlessly flow across to entire floor. There were also tastefully decorated concept units of living spaces complete with furniture and other soft furnishing. At the vast production floor of the EWCC, members stood attentively around a huge flatbed for an insider’s view on the manufacturing of railings and motorised systems. Janet Lee thanked Elyza for their hospitality and hoped that the members benefitted from the visit. The eventful day rounded off with a hearty buffet lunch for the members.

General Manager of ISK Singapore Branch and Nagase’s sales and marketing team presented an array of adhesives and coating materials to demonstrate their properties, with a creative spin – bricks were being glued to panels and small glass sheets were passed about to encourage interaction and keep the presentation lively and interesting. Cemedine produces high performance MS sealant and adhesive which can be used on a variety of surfaces including
glass, steel, mirror, cement board and wood. ISK is into photocatalytic glass coating (clean nano). The self-cleaning coated glass surfaces stay clean and clear. The MIIP members in attendance were clearly impressed by the simple but impactful innovations from the Japanese companies. Great value was seen in the way these unique chemical products can benefit the workflows and processes of those in the construction and maintenance field.

Visit to Nitto Denko MIIP members recently visited tape manufacturer Nitto Denko Materials (M) Sdn Bhd’s manufacturing and research facility in Shah Alam. The event started off with a light breakfast and tea session where members could talk about the 3 calories lost on the way up – calorie-tracking labels are a Nitto Denko initiative to keep its staff and visitors fit while taking the stairs (in indoor shoes for hygiene reasons, too). “We greatly appreciate MIIP members coming to visit our facility. As you know, Nitto Denko Corporation is celebrating its 100th Anniversary in October this year,” said Ezio Kawano, Managing Director of Nitto Denko Materials (M) Sdn Bhd, during his welcome speech. He also highlighted a selection of some of the 15,000 products and technology the company had created for the building and construction industry. “We are happy to cooperate with MIIP and look forward to future collaborations,” he stated. MIIP members were also shown some of the company’s products and technology by Nitto Denko’s marketing team. Everyone present had even to perform a mandatory “safety call”, reiterating Nitto Denko’s commitment to placing “safety above everything else”. A core distinction of Nitto Denko, as a manufacturer in Malaysia,
is that it is the first to fully use emulsion polymerisation methods as opposed to solvent-based technology which releases harmful VOC. Nitto innovations highlighted include the TEMISH® micro-filtering technology, NITOHULLMAC XG anti-corrosion systems, EPT Sealer soundproofing technology, and market-ready medical adhesives such as transdermal patches, sports and kinesiology tape, to name a few. MIIP members were amazed at the trim and colourful presentations of the products offered by Nitto Denko. Some of them even took home some useful souvenirs – Nitto Washi masking tapes, also known as “painter’s tape” for its instrumental role in a growing alternative art movement within Japan and the world over. The event ended with a buffet lunch which had some contemporary favourites such as Japanese Curry and Chicken Karaage.

A comprehensive walking tour and presentation were given to the visiting members, an experience which exposed them to all types of cork innovations and styles. In cork and cork paper, designers and builders can find a sustainable, eco-friendly material capable of imbuing built spaces with touches of nature.
