rAWr AWARDS 2015 Malaysia Business Events Week 2015

PRESIDENT’S NOTE Dear Readers,

S

DATO’ VINCENT LIM President, MACEOS

eason’s Greetings! It’s been a great year for MACEOS! One of our main objectives this year was to increase our member count. I’m happy to note that we have successfully done that which will achieve what we have set out to do – create a solid platform to represent the Malaysian business events industry. In September, the Malaysia Business Events Week organised by MyCEB saw a congregation of industry professionals who attended workshops and panel talks to further educate themselves and improve the industry on the whole. The MBEW was a huge success and is highly anticipated by our members each year. Also, one of the most significant milestones we have achieved this year is the establishment of the certification programmes, for those keen on entering a career in the conference and exhibition industry. The programme is also to encourage those already in the industry who wish to upskill themselves to gain more knowledge and know-how from industry professionals. Participants will receive Professional Exhibition Management and Professional Conference Management credentials upon completion, which are both globally recognised. I believe that these certification programmes will further improve the professional and competency levels of the human resources needed in Malaysia’s business events industry. The first round of the certification programme was conducted at the AEC+EXPO 2015 held from the 11-13 November. Themed, “Innovations In MICE – The Way Forward”, the AEC+EXPO provided the best business opportunities to network and share many new innovative and creative breakthrough ideas and technology to spur the growth of the manufacturing sector, especially the MICE Industry in particular. organised by Asian Federation of Exhibition and Convention Associations (AFECA) and MACEOS, apart from the exhibition, the three day expo saw simultaneously activities which included the AFECA Forum, panel discussions, the ASIA MICE Youth Challenge, AFECA Gala & Awards and ended with a gala dinner for the rAWr Awards 2015. We were also proud to host the AFECA Board meeting and the AFECA-IAEE Joint Meeting during the AEC+Expo. Going into its second edition, rAWr Awards 2015 is the much coveted industry award that recognises the best of the best in the business events industry. Jointly organised by Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) and MACEOS and supported by the Ministry of Tourism, the much anticipated awards ceremony was a great success and winners were very pleased to be recognised for their outstanding work in the industry. Also, in an effort to be the voice representing our industry, MACEOS recently met with Dato’ Seri Nazri from the Ministry of Tourism, as well as Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed, Ministry of International Trade and Industry. Establishing relationships with relevant parties to further encourage the industry to grow is part of our focus and mission to elevate our industry further. To end this year, let’s celebrate the fact that MyCEB, together with industry partners, secured 152 bid wins which resulted in a 15 per cent increase in delegate numbers compared to 2013. A job well done to everyone in the industry! I would like to take this opportunity to wish the members of MACEOS, the business events community, as well as all our readers a very successful and bright new year. Together, let’s make our industry grow from strength to strength in 2016. A Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!

hat a difference a year can make! That phrase can certainly be applied to MACEOS as we reach the end of 2015 and look forward to the New Year. I have been involved in MACEOS for over 8 years now and I cannot remember a year during my time as Vice President, ever being so significant in terms of activity and achievements. We have rolled out the first ever PEM and PCM course with Malaysian content and Malaysian based trainers and after a very encouraging start, we have more training programmes to come as we look to build on this solid platform. We have also organised more networking events, enticed more companies into the MACEOS fold, developed the NOSS for Exhibition Management and even organised the inaugural AEC+Expo at KLCC last month. Our media offering continues to go from strength to strength with this end of year edition carrying a record number of advertisers as BE magazine cements its position in the market place as the definitive voice of the business events industry. I would also like to thank our contributors for their support in ensuring our content remains at a consistently high standard and a special thank you this edition to CEO of MATRADE, Dato’ Dzulkifli Mahmud. Finally, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and best wishes to all of us for a successful 2016!

apable Malaysian businesses are getting a helping hand to explore the global market through the initiatives set up by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE). MATRADE’s CEO, Dato’ Dzulkifli Mahmud with his team are determined to make the phrase ‘Made-In-Malaysia’ synonymous with excellence, reliability and trustworthiness. Could you explain MATRADE’s role in promoting Malaysian exports overseas? MATRADE is Malaysia’s Trade Promotion Organisation. Our responsibility is to promote Malaysia’s products and services as well as Malaysia’s capabilities to the world. To do that, we have to develop local talents to be world-class exporters through various activities, like Exporters Development, Export Promotion (trade missions, specialised marketing missions and international trade fairs/ business matching programmes for Malaysian companies and foreign importers) and we also provide up-to-date Trade & Market Intelligence. MATRADE’s main role is to provide trade advisory services, trade information and organise

trade promotion programmes to facilitate Malaysian companies including SMEs to venture overseas and gain market access. Our skilled officers are responsible for looking after various industries and they will assist and advise companies accordingly. We have 46 International offices too, which Malaysian companies can leverage on. What are the schemes and incentives that Malaysian exporters can tap into? MATRADE has developed various export promotion programmes to assist Malaysian exporters expand their market shares in existing export markets and at the same time, penetrate new markets. In 2015, MATRADE planned various new high impact initiatives for different types of businesses and there are over 116 programmes for exporters, organised in 46 countries. In terms of funding, we offer: Services Export Fund (SEF) SEF provides assistance to Malaysian Service Providers (MSPs) to undertake activities to expand and venture into the international market. The assistance is extended in the form of a reimbursable grant. Eligible activities are: • To promote Malaysian expertise in specific service areas overseas • To cover related cost in rendering services for projects abroad • Establishment of physical commercial presence/office overseas • Supplying Made-In-Malaysia products for Malaysian projects abroad

The Market Development Grant (MDG) MDG is a scheme introduced to assist small and medium enterprises (SMEs), service providers and trade and industry associations/chambers of commerce and professional bodies in undertaking export promotional activities. Companies can apply for a reimbursable grant on the eligible export of promotional activities, subject to the availability of funds. Apart from the funds, we also offer specialised programmes for different types of companies, such as: Mid-Tier Companies Development Programme Mid-Tier Companies Development Programme (MTCDP) aims to develop 50 Mid-Tier export companies every year (from 2014 until 2020) to become regional and global champions. Programmes for MTCDPs will emphasise on companies to be more resilient and competitive both regionally and internationally. Going Export (GoEx) Going Export (GoEx) Programme is targeted at first time exporters or existing exporters venturing into new products or new markets. The programme is to provide customised and comprehensive assistance on steps to export such as linkage to expertise, buyers and trade financing. The GoEx programme will provide end-to-end export facilitation through structured planning and technical advisory. eTRADE SMEs will also benefit from “eTRADE”, a programme under Digital Malaysia and led by

MATRADE which is targeted to help SMEs attract global buyers as well as to promote and sell their prducts online through the internet by 2020. Through this programme, Malaysian SMEs would be able to have an online presence in leading international e-marketplaces. This increases SMEs market penetration and internationalises Malaysian branding. This programme will benefit SMEs through trainings on online marketing and e-commerce related topics. Qualifying SMEs will be issued a RM2,500 e-voucher for participation in the eTRADE programme. BWYEDP (Bumiputera, Women and Youth Exporters Development Programme) This by-invitation only, 3-year handholding programme, nurtures Bumiputera, Women and Youth-owned companies to penetrate the international market, create more competitive and sustainable exporters. Through these initiatives, Malaysian SMEs would be able: • To customise business coaching from experienced and knowledgeable MATRADE officers; • Get international business exposure by participating in international trade promotion activities and market update; and • Have a networking session as a platform to allow sharing of information on business opportunities and market entry. What are some of your personal goals for MATRADE during your time as CEO? I am optimistic that I will steer this trade promotion agency

more efficiently to facilitate the Malaysian business community. It is essential for us to ensure these local businesses continue to export and be recognised worldwide for their good quality and innovative offerings. I hope under my leadership, the people of MATRADE, or who we called “MATRADErs”, will render their best services to Malaysian enterprises and international buyers alike. “MATRADErs” have always been known for their undying support towards Malaysian businesses and I wish to further inspire them to give their all in their line of work and make Malaysia an international focal point for quality products and services. I look forward to the continuous support and active co-operation from the Ministries, other government agencies, trade associations and chambers so that together, we can make Malaysia one of the world’s leading export nations. I’m focused on boosting exports, increasing SME participation in the export sector and to ensure Malaysia remains competitive in terms of products and services offered globally. Currently, SME contribution to the export sector hovered around 19 per cent and will increase to 25 per cent by 2020, in line with the aspiration set in the 11th Malaysia Plan. One exciting new initiative that MATRADE has been involved in was the MALAYSIAN FASHION WEEK which took place at MECC from 4-7 November this year. Could you share the vision of this event, how it originated and the rationale behind it? MATRADE has been inclusive

in its approach with export promotion by also encouraging soft exports, including fashion. It started in 2011 when Lifestyle Section was set up to look after lifestyle sectors like fashion (textile, apparel and garments), art, cosmetics, beauty and personal care products as well as the furniture industry. Soft sectors have good potential for exports although its contribution to Malaysia’s total exports is still relatively small, it has grown through the years. In 2014, exports of lifestyle sector including fashion and fashion products reached RM20 billion. For the first eight months, exports of lifestyle products registered 9.3% to reach RM14.50 billion as against the same period of 2014. Malaysia has many talents in the fashion industry, including young and new emerging designers. We believe this number can grow further by getting them exposed to the international market. Whether it is for couture or ready-towear fashion, global demand is aplenty and ready to accept our designs and creations – which are unique and diverse in nature. Other than clothing, we also promote cosmetics, personal care and beauty products, accessories, jewellery and shoes. Our designers and entrepreneurs need to leverage on the demand of the market to promote their innovative and creative products globally. Did the event achieve what it was set out to do? Malaysia Fashion Week and FACIT@INTRADE Exhibition has achieved its objective and targeted outcome. The 4-day event succeeded

“I’m focused on boosting exports, increasing small and medium enterprise participation in the export sector and to ensure Malaysia remained competitive in terms of products and services offered globally.”

in generating potential sales of RM126.52 million from the exhibition and international sourcing programmes with international fashion buyers. The event saw a 40 per cent increase in sales compared to the year before. The 4-day event also generated a lot of interest from international buyers on Malaysia’s young and emerging designers such as Azura Azwa, Hazree Wahid, Fairuz Ramdan, Benua, Lynda Rahim, Man Chien and Illiza Ho. There was also interest on the fashion works from our student designers who came from UiTM, MSU, Raffles College, UNISEL and ESMOD. The theme for this year’s FACIT@INTRADE & Malaysia Fashion Week is ‘Fashion Inclusivity’ and it has succeeded in promoting designs and creations from Sarawak, Sabah and the Peranakan heritage. For the first time the event also featured a dedicated Pavilion

on Muslimah Fashion with the theme ‘Modestyle’. Modest style design fashion is becoming more popular in the global fashion industry and will open up big opportunities for our Muslimah fashion houses and designers such as Blancheur, Rids Collection and Aini Bakke. MATRADE is well known for its function in helping Malaysian companies export overseas but what role do you see MATRADE playing in helping to develop the business events industry here in Malaysia? We organise our own events namely forums, seminars and trainings to assist and engage with the Malaysian business community. As the trade promotion agency of Malaysia, it goes without saying that these activities are of great importance to us. For the business events industry, we would engage with them via strategic collaborations and endorsements.

In your opinion what are the areas in which you feel the Malaysian business events industry can improve on? The players in the event industry could improve the quality of participants at their events and be specific and selective in the topic chosen for their events. The topic has to be relevant to the Malaysian business community. The topics can also be skewed to the downstream levels and shouldn’t be too generic. This is because, with the current economic landscape, people are beginning to tap into the business opportunities within a supply chain, hence identifying topics in the downstream level would be the way to go. What is the one quote that you live by? Why? To be successful in whatever you do, you have to teach yourself to look at the opportunities in any situation. It’s important to stay positive and think ahead of time.

events industry in Malaysia has played a big part in the success of this year’s event. “In our inaugural event last year, we explored general MICE topics and engaged a handful of international speakers. This year, we decided to develop a focused theme that would encourage the Malaysian MICE players to collaborate in designing the future course of the industry. Collectively we can prepare a roadmap to build a sustainable industry that is resilient to an an ever changing, and at times, unpredictable global environment. In addition, through the provision of education, networking, exchange of ideas and debate of issues in the three-day event, we hope that now the Malaysian business events industry is better equipped to take ownership of its future”, says Datuk Zulkefli.

Relevant Activities for Participants

Key sessions included “Designing a sustainable future” by MCI Global’s Guy Bigwood and Roger Simmons; “Unlocking The Future Through Creativity” by L&R Contract Business Services’ Ruth Lillian; and “What the Future Holds” – Towards 2020 by Dato’ Seri Idris Jala, Chief Executive Officer of Performance Management and Delivery Unit Malaysia (PEMANDU). This time, MBEW participants were also able to tap the brains of 20 local and international renowned speakers through plenary sessions, break-out sessions on leadership, sales and marketing and operations, and cluster sessions categorised by the various MICE segments, namely: convention, exhibition and incentive. “The topics were carefully crafted to ensure all

MICE segments were covered and are applicable for all levels of the business events (profession), from junior (right up) to the senior team.” “Also, a new feature of MBEW is a by-invitation only forum for government and industry leaders, which explored how the public and private sectors can work closely to enhance Malaysia’s status as a preferred MICE destination in Asia”, adds Datuk Zulkefli. This yearly initiative by MyCEB will undoubtedly help to further strengthen Malaysia’s global appeal and position as the leading destination for international meetings, incentives, conventions, trade exhibitions and other major events. “It is our hope that MBEW will help the Malaysian business events industry be better equipped to take ownership of their future.”

THE PARADIGM SHIFT IN ACQUISITIONS by Steve Monnington, Mayfield Media Strategies, UK

The level of M&A activity over the last few months involving Private Equity firms is unprecedented. Since my last column there have been more PE backed deals and we wonder who will be next…

T

he stock market collapse in China – a fall of 35% in recent months after hitting a 7 year high in June – could mean a faster slowdown with repercussions for global growth. This, together with the uncertainty of the Chinese government’s attitude towards international organisers and the high price expectations of the independent Chinese organisers will inevitably mean a slowdown in acquisition activity. There is a continuing shift in geographical focus for acquisitions from emerging markets to the mature but growing (i.e stable) economies, primarily USA. Just looking at the

table of recent deals below tells the story about the shift in emphasis. In the last few months there have been nine acquisitions in the USA and only one in China (plus a few strategic cooperations). China is too big a market to ignore but equally so is the USA and in terms of relative lack of risk the USA will win every time. In my last column I talked about the increasing involvement of Private Equity firms in exhibition M&A and highlighted a number of acquisitions of large organisers by Private Equity Firms. The Private Equity business investment case is based on growth

and the fastest way to grow is by making bolt-on acquisitions. The other interesting feature of the list of recent deals is this secondary effect with both Comexposium (Charterhouse Capital Partners acquired 50%) and Clarion (acquired by Providence Equity) being very active. In the case of Clarion this was directly by the acquisition of Urban Expositions and then subsequent acquisitions made by Urban themselves – but they are all financed by Private Equity funds. Acquisition multiples have been increasing but it’s not obvious that Private Equity backed organisers are responsible for driving up prices. In China, for example, there is a strong element of “face” in acquisition negotiation – sellers don’t want to appear weak to their peers and this is pushing up price expectations although there have been a few recent examples of deals falling apart because trade buyers are not prepared to overpay. We have seen a transformation in the global activity of Clarion and other Private Equity backed organisers over the years. What is clear is that Private Equity involvement in the exhibition sector is here to stay and whether you consider that to be good or bad, without their funding we wouldn’t have this level of globalisation.

Chairman of Tourism Malaysia, Mr. Wee Choo Keong congratulated MACEOS and AFECA on successfully executing the inaugural AEC+Expo. AEC+Expo 2015 is expected to boost the regional meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions industry, with this congregation of more than 100 local and international MICE and business events captains of the industry, including trade visitors, forum delegates and international buyers. The event was supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) and International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE); the event was managed by Fairs & Events Management Sdn Bhd (FEMSB).

Melting Pot of Opportunities

AEC+Expo saw 100 exhibitors from the five ASEAN countries: Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia, as well as Australia, Japan, China and Taiwan. There were 25

MICE and business events exhibit categories and services, as well as several industry-concurrent ending with the AFECA Awards and RawR Awards’ nights. Participants were given an excellent opportunity to network and share innovative breakthroughs, new ideas and technology to spur the growth of the MICE industry from more than 27 MICE related associations from 17 countries, including corporate professionals.

Boosting the Regional MICE industry

MACEOS President, Dato’ Vincent Lim, said Malaysia was chosen to host the event to complement her role as the chair of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) which bodes well to encourage the development and growth of the trade fairs industry not only in Southeast Asia, but to heighten awareness of the Asia-Pacific region. With this in mind, Lim added that the key drivers will remain consistent for the next several years in tandem with the strong performance by the

New venue capacity in key markets will also spur continued growth. “We believe it is timely and appropriate for MACEOS to champion the cause of heightening the regional MICE industry which would have a positive spillover effect for the tourism sector.” “The AEC+Expo will benefit the MICE industry greatly due to the economic paradigm shift of the integration and implementation of the AEC. It will enable the captains of industry to establish and strengthen their networking, share new innovative and creative ideas and technology to further spur the growth of the overall economy,” he added.

The AFECA Forum

Apart from the exhibition, the AFECA Forum saw the participation of some 13 group delegations of overseas

buyers from China, Indonesia and Thailand. The AFECA Forum is one of the leading forums in the region for the MICE industry where research development and innovations are shared, trends are analysed, applications and business ideas are debated upon by the industry’s top leaders. The AFECA Board Meeting and the AFECA-IAEE Joint Meeting were also held during the event.

Activities at AEC+Expo

Apart from the AFECA Forum, the various concurrent AEC+Expo 2015 programmes included the AFECA Gala & Awards Night and Asia MICE Youth Challenge, a regional Inter-University Challenge focusing on MICE planning competition involving 12 universities from the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Malaysia. WITH THE NEW CEO OF MACEOS

Meet Amos Wong and read about his role in MACEOS and how the setting up of the new secretariat is a significant milestone for the association and its members.

A

s MACEOS grows bigger and stronger, there was a need to set up a permanent secretariat to manage member’s needs and association activities. Heading the new secretariat is Amos Wong, CEO of MACEOS. As new CEO of MACEOS, could you define your role in the association? My role in the association is to put into perspective a solid road map to grow our membership size and create strategic partnerships with local and international industry associations that can bring value to its members, including professional training that is in line with the goals and aspirations of the Executive Committee. Tell us a bit about yourself and your past experience in the industry? I have been involved in the conference and exhibition industry since 1971 while working with the Danish Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. Conventions & Events (AOSCE) Sdn Bhd in 2006 to head the FIGO World Congress of Gynaecology project. I “retired” as the Managing Director of AOSCE in 2012 where during my term, we secured about 20 international conferences and congresses with a combined total (in excess) of 16,000 international delegates. These international events also consisted of an exhibition component. Now with the new secretariat is in place, what’s in store for MACEOS in the future? Where do you see the association going? The new secretariat is just a central point where we can keep all our materials in one location, and where the monthly Executive Committee meetings can be held. This new space will also allow MACEOS a proper venue to meet with visiting local and foreign delegations. The new office space is the pride and joy of the association, could you tell us a bit about the journey it took to achieve this milestone? Since the inception of MACEOS some 25-years ago, most of the functional duties were carried out on an honorary basis, either through the secretary of the President, Honorary Treasurer

or Honorary Secretary wherever they are located. Therefore having our own space means MACEOS has reached a significant milestone and will now move forward to achieve our other development goals. How many full-time or parttime employees are employed by the association at the new secretariat? Presently Carol and I are working part-time and it is the intention of the Executive Committee to engage a full-time staff to manage the other activities that are presently done by the various Honorary Executive Committee members or through Carol, our secretariat support staff. What can members look forward to with the new secretariat? Events? Get-Togethers etc? Current activities includes bi-monthly e-newsletters, BE Magazine, PCM and PEM training courses, regular networking functions with other like-minded industry associations, including tours to other major states for recruitment of new members. We are confident that timely, concrete and coordinated development activities can be carried out in the future, which will add value and benefit to our members and MACEOS.

THE PERFECT RECEPTION IN MULTICULTURAL MALAYSIA MyCEB plays a big part in the success of the Perfect China Incentive Travel & Seminar 2015.

M

alaysia recently hosted an impressive and exclusive trip for 6,000 delegates from the Perfect China incentive group. The major multilevel marketing company for consumer goods has made Malaysia its incentive destination previously in 2011 and 2014, returning with the biggest group in 2015 after notable impressions. With staggered arrival from 3rd to 7th July, the group converged on the 8th of July for the Conference and Gala Dinner in Malaysia’s largest indoor exhibition venue, Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS). The high-performing delegates participated in various unique activities specially installed for them in three major states in Malaysia – Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi Langkawi – three days before their departure on the 13 July 2015.

The Perfect Plan

The notable success of the Perfect China incentive group trip was an impressive showcase of dynamic

partnership between event organisers, Sunflower Holidays, a Destination Management company, and the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB). Mapping out every detail for the event, Mint Leong, Director of Sunflower Holidays said, “The motivation to organise this event was an all time high, and we are proud to have managed to pull it off. Everything was in tip-top shape and we are very glad that the group had a spectacular time. The synergy between our team and partner, especially MyCEB was stellar. Malaysia is definitely in the global radar for business tourism.” The 6,000 delegates, were flown in through four major airlines in stagger

and stayed in 30 major hotels across all destinations. As some of the itinerary venues could not accommodate the full capacity all at once, the organiser decided to have delegates arrive at different states and seamlessly enjoy the same experience no matter where they were. The first group arrived in Langkawi on 3 July, followed by the second group in Penang the very next day. The third group arrived in Langkawi on 6 July and the final group in Penang on 7 July. Despite the alternate arrival times, the delegates all converged in MAEPS for the main event. While MAEPS’ venue was perfectly adequate to take in the capacity of delegates, mobile amenities such as toilets

“Experiencing the local culture is always an enriching, but dining with the Royal family of Kedah was the crème de la crème of the trip. It was truly an honour to be welcomed by the higher echelon of the society!” ~ Chen XingChun & Yang QiuLing, Sales Director from Hebei

were thoughtfully planned for the convenience of the delegates. Organisers were also tasked to create a memorable and impressive stay after the Conference, as this is the group’s third time in Malaysia. With creativity and sheer determination, Sunflower Holidays managed to convince the Royal Palace of Kedah to open its doors to welcome the groups’ VIPs to break-fast with them. Working four to five months in advance to coordinate, the results were rewarding when DYMM Yang

Di Pertuan Agong, the Sultan of Kedah agreed to the event. In Penang, the organisers took on the challenge of blocking out the lane at Padang Kota Lama, ensuring that Perfect China’s incentive group was able to have a personalised food feast with maximum privacy. Security was taken care of by working with local police enforcers, the Town Hall and public volunteers. As the event was open air, measures were taken to ensure that the show goes on without being affected by the weather.

“The massive trip contributed an estimated RM 128 million in economic impact to the country’s economy.” ~ Datuk Zulkefli, CEO, MyCEB

Giant umbrellas were used to protect delegates in the event it rains. “It was indeed an outstanding delivery by all who were involved. It is a pleasure for MyCEB to be collaborating with our partners, Sunflower Holidays and other state tourism agencies to ensure an exceptional experience for the Perfect China group” said Datuk Zulkefli Hj. Sharif, CEO of MyCEB. Datuk Zulkefli also proudly announced, “The massive trip contributed an estimated RM128 million in economic impact to the country’s economy.”

The Perfect Trip

Perfect China’s Conference and Gala Dinner took place in MAEPS, Kuala Lumpur, which successfully delivered its capacity by fitting in the full delegation. The event was also graced by the Minister of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri Bin Tan Sri Abdul Aziz. As the evening came to an end, fireworks decorated the skies, honouring the company’s top performers. Also, Perfect China graciously contributed a cheque worth RM 600,000 to the victims of the Ranau, Sabah earthquake. The donation was channelled to Yayasan Sabah which will utilise the funds to rebuild the lives of victims.

LANGKAWI INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CENTRE

With its contemporary, sleek look and state-of-the-art facilities, the Langkawi International Convention Centre is an unrivalled venue for mega-scale as well small and private events.

T

he state-of-the-art Langkawi International Conventional Centre (LICC) has been creating waves since opening its door early this year when it played host to the 26th ASEAN Summit. Being the only convention centre of international standard in Langkawi, the LICC is fast becoming the venue of choice for the business, meetings and conventions industry. Following the Summit, LICC, which overlooks the beach on one side and the lush rainforest on the other, has become a popular venue even for those looking to host events. With its state-of-the-art facilities, LICC is ideal for hosting local and international meetings and conferences including private and niche events as well as for product launches including cars, and

golf tournaments. It also played host recently to the 4th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Drug Matters in October. “We have the facilities and infrastructure to host world-class, as well as local events, including concerts and private functions,” says Director of LICC, Tengku Ramizan Tengku Kaman Shah who has been in the hospitality industry for more than 12 years. Now that the LICC is fully operational, Langkawi can enhance its standing as one of the international hubs for events and conventions. Among the special features of LICC are its pillarless rooms including the 1,660 sqm Grand Ballroom which can accommodate 1,000 people (banquet style). The ballroom can be partitioned into three rooms as well. There are also seven meeting rooms ranging | BUSINESS EVENTS MALAYSIA |

26

from 21sqm to the 93 sqm VIP suite and lounge. All the rooms are equipped with high-end audio visual facilities such as Bose sound systems, while the high ceilings measuring nine meters are mounted with chandeliers that lend an ornate ambience to the area. The foyer areas have floor-to-ceiling clear-glass windows which allow natural light to flood the entire space. To ease private arrivals for the VIPs, there are three different entrances for politicians, royalties and even high profile celebrities. LICC is centrally located, close to Kuah town – the island’s shopping and commercial centre – and about 20 minutes away from Langkawi International Airport. The design of the convention centre, says Tengku

Ramizan, was inspired by a traditional Malaysian design – a motif that reflects the Malay culture. LICC anticipates more events from international and local companies. Tengku Ramizan and his team have also been actively promoting the convention centre by holding dialogue sessions with relevant groups such as events marketing companies, hoteliers, travel agents, taxi association and aviation companies, among others. “We are also closely working with the Langkawi Tourism Department and the Langkawi Development Authority

(LADA), and going on road shows to promote the convention centre and the island as well.” The government, working closely with LADA, has drawn up plans to further develop the mystical island with its fabled history and natural wonders not only as a world class tourist destination but also as a preferred destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE). In this respect, LICC provides an ideal platform for hospitality services for events on the island. Events with overseas and local participants are also well supported with accommodation options close by. “We are a few steps away from The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa (which manages the convention centre) and the six-star St Regis Langkawi which is also located in the same vicinity. Both offer stunning seaside venues for hosting private cocktail parties and dinner themed parties under the stars,” adds Tengku Ramizan. Apart from meetings rooms and convention halls, LICC also has its own fully-equipped kitchen and four professional chefs who are responsible for creating and selecting dishes which

can range from comfort foods to exotic and tantalising cuisines. “We also cater to guests who have specific food needs. Healthy food – nuts and fresh greens are always included in normal dinners.” For large scale events, the LICC can count on getting extra manpower under a programme by the Starwood Hotels & Resorts Group, one of the world’s largest hotel companies that owns, operates, franchises and manages hotels, resorts, spas and residences. The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa and St Regis Langkawi are part of the Starwood Group. “Whenever there is a need for extra staff, especially during large scale events or functions, we can get the extra staff from the other hotels that are a part this programme. In that sense, we don’t have staffing problems when it comes to hosting international scale events,” states Tengku Ramizan. LICC takes pride in being an ecofriendly venue – its design has energy and water efficient features. “We are conscious of the need to take care of the environment and that is why we do not encourage the use of plastic bags or styrofoam products.”

COMMITTED TO EXCELLENCE IN EXHIBITION LOGISTICS

R.E Rogers (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd is hands on in its approach to meet client needs on-site, with their new office space in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

T

he only freight forwarder to have on-site facilities in Malaysia, R.E Rogers proves that it does what it takes to provide excellence in service commitment to their clients. No one knows the complexities and crucial operation procedures involved in exhibition logistics better than R.E Rogers’ General Manager, Syed Amirul Hafidz and Operations Manager, Rasyid Abdullah. “A lot goes into what we do – from transporting high value goods across the seas, ensuring timelines are met and that the show goes on without a hitch,” explains Amirul. The new office space located in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre puts R.E Rogers right in the middle of the action. Rasyid says, “We have workstations to attend to daily requirements while working on-site and we are also able to attend to exhibition enquiries to further grow the business.” Both employees agree that the office space also provides a sense of commitment and focus so their clients experience total customer service excellence from start to finish. Apart from hands-on service, Amirul also explains that the new office space will ensure the safety of R.E Rogers employees. “Our employees will no longer have to travel back and forth from our headquarters in Shah Alam when there is an ongoing exhibition in the city,” he says. “Now, they just have to pack up their files and set up base in our new office for the duration of the exhibition,” adds Rasyid. Amirul is also quick to point out that the office space creates some branding for the logistics company. “We are located right next to Exhibition Hall 1 which means we are very visible to the hundreds of people that walk through everyday.” Amirul has worked for R.E Rogers for over 13 years. “I studied International Business in University and worked with a multinational oil and gas company before I joined R.E Rogers.” Today, Amirul is highly experienced in exhibition logistics and looks forward to gaining even more knowledge

of the industry. Rasyid is an engineer by profession and dabbled in entrepreneurship before beginning his career with R.E Rogers. “I’ve been with the company for eight years and I too have gained a tremendous amount of exhibition logistics knowledge through the years.” Currently the only freight forwarder with a focus on only exhibition logistics, it is obvious that R.E Rogers takes their commitment very seriously. Coupled with a strong and reliable team of employees, they are all set to continue making their mark in the exhibition industry.

NUMBER 1 IN CONVENTION EXCLUSIVITY

Putrajaya International Convention Centre is Malaysia’s premier meeting and convention venue.

F

irst in exclusivity. First in the number and variety of its venues. First in access and connectivity. First in green practices. As important as all those are, Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) has one further come to fulfillment: the world’s first Intelligent Garden City, Putrajaya. A carefully planned, high-tech centre for government, business, education and research and development, set in an oasis of green parks, lakes and wetlands.

developments. It is both an iconic landmark that overlooks Malaysia’s seat of government and one that incorporates a modern, spacious and incredibly versatile design. Yet it also embodies a further, cultural dimension. Its most imposing architectural feature is the roof, designed to resemble a pending perak, the ornate handcrafted silver regalia worn on ceremonial occasions by the sultans of Malaysia and representing power and authority. The main halls are set in the “eye” of the pending.
