PRESI DENT’S NOTE Ø
Dear readers, It is with great honour that I accept the role of President for MACEOS for a second term. I would like to thank all MACEOS members for their confidence and faith in me during my last term. As I begin my second term, I promise to fulfil the goals and vision of the association, pushing the boundaries even further for the betterment of the industry. The committee that has been elected into the second term are made up of highly experienced business events leaders in Malaysia and there is no doubt that together, as a team, we can build our association and in turn further enhance the development of the Malaysian business events industry. A lot of plans have been set in place for the coming year and all will be revealed as we go along. The new committee got together in Awana, Genting Highlands recently to discuss the MACEOS ROADMAP 2016 to set in place concrete plans to move forward for the year. Our most recent milestone includes an MOU signing with Taylor’s College to collaborate on their ‘Elite Programme’ which will require their students to intern with our members. This is another way we can work together to ensure fresh graduates will have an opportunity to work on the field, learning the ropes from highly experienced industry leaders. In the end, this would be beneficial to our industry as the up and coming industry players will have the knowledge and know-how from the industry professionals themselves. Moving forward, education and training is a crucial focus for us, and we continue to conduct our PCM and PEM courses, most recently in Sarawak where we had positive feedback from the participants. I would like to thank Sarawak Convention Bureau for helping us extend our reach to their state, providing an unprecedented opportunity for industry professionals in the state to enhance their business events knowledge. We look forward to seeing everyone in Kuching again really soon! The BE Magazine is another arm MACEOS uses to spread industry knowledge and news and in this issue we are focused on the state of Penang. Penang has proven itself as a keen contender to be a business events hub in Malaysia and you can read all about their efforts in this issue. Once again, I would like to thank all those involved in making this issue a success especially to YB Dato Abdul Malik Kassim (Penang State Exco) Ashwin Gunasekeran (CEO of PCEB), Khoo Boo Lim (Chairman of MAH, Penang Chapter) and Paul Chan (Divisional General Manager, Group Hospitality, Eco Meridian Sdn Bhd). Your passion and dedication to the growth of business events in Penang doesn’t go unnoticed and it is very much appreciated by the industry partners. Happy Reading!

Welcome to the latest edition of BE Magazine! MACEOS will continue to cement its position as a national association and this issue, in which we feature Penang, certainly drives that point home. Penang continues to excite as a Business Events destination and we hope the content you see in our June issue will show the progress being made in this regard. The formation of the Penang Convention Bureau and the impending delivery of the SPICE Convention Centre are tangible developments that bode well for the island’s future success in the Business Events sector. Hence, it is timely for BE Magazine to bring this news to market. Since the last issue of BE magazine we have also seen the MACEOS AGM come and go, with an expanded and energised Exco committee. We are all looking forward to steering the association along the road map we have charted out. In fact, later this month, we will brainstorm the goals of the association for the next two years, so watch out for a report on this in our next issue. Education and training will continue to be one of the core components of the association’s work moving forward. MACEOS is proud to deliver our very first Professional Conference Management course in Kuching recently. Thanks to Kenneth Fong our Education Chairman and thanks also to Sarawak Convention Bureau for their support in making this historical 3 day course come to fruition. Thanks once again to all contributors to this June issue with a special mention to YB Dato Abdul Malik Kassim (Penang State Exco) Ashwin Gunasekeran (CEO of PCEB), Khoo Boo Lim (Chairman of MAH, Penang Chapter) and Paul Chan (Divisional General Manager, Group Hospitality, Eco Meridian Sdn Bhd). PENANG, THE PERFECT PICK FOR BUSINESS EVENTS YB Dato’ Abdul Malik Kassim speaks to BE Magazine about how Penang is forging ahead as a preferred business events destination in the region. “It was no easy task coming as far as we’ve come, establishing Penang as a preferred business events destination, but sheer determination and the love for our state made the challenge worth it. The end result, we are finally well on our way to being a top of the mind destination in the region!” says YB Dato’ Abdul Malik Kassim, member of Penang State Legislative Assembly and the State Minister for Religious Affairs, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs.

BUSINESS EVENTS MALAYSIA
YB Malik graduated in Public Administration from the School of Administration and Law from University Mara Institute of Technology (UITM) and has had extensive experience in various level of Business Management from Managing small and Medium scale companies to a Multi-National Electronic company. “My career path has taken me both in the government sector as well as the private sector which makes my experience vast and all – rounded. This has helped me work with the state government to help
PENANG: WHAT’S SO SPECIAL? YB Malik’s passion for his home state is evident in the way he speaks about its history, its people and its culture. “Penang definitely has it all and one of the best things about Penang is our people. Our people, regardless of race and religion, live together in peace and harmony. “He speaks about his own childhood where he fondly recalls having an Indian neighbour on his right and a Chinese neighbour on his left. “I sincerely believe that it is this unity that sets us apart from the rest, allowing us to celebrate our biggest asset, our people.” Prior to his current role, he held many prominent positions, like the Senior Technical Management position in two International Engineering & Construction Company, Christiani & Nielson UK and Boskalis International Dutch. His international exposure in the Middle East started with his engagement in Saudi in 1998 for a year as a Business Development Manager with a Saudi-Malaysian Company in Jeddah and Makkah. He was involved in a number of International Business Development Projects in the Middle East mainly in Saudi. When asked about the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB), YB Malik expressed his satisfaction with how the bureau has progressed since its formation. “Before PCEB was born, we did our research and spoke to the Malaysian Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) as well as well as other convention bureaus before we figured out before we figured out what we wanted to achieve out of a state bureau. I can safely say, we have no regrets as the team is working hard to establish Penang along the likes of Singapore, Jakarta and Bangkok as a preferred business events destination.” He believes that PCEB is on the right track with their ‘experiences unfiltered’ branding for his island state. “Penang truly reflects what Malaysia is all about while you see the people in their living heritage. We offer a balance of the old and new wrapped up in one magnificent package!” However, YB Malik’s only hope for PCEB is that they successfully retain the events held in Penang. “I hope PCEB will take up the challenge to retain business events held in Penang otherwise their efforts will be in vain.” He explains, “We want to have repeat exhibitions, conferences and incentive trips, not one time events only.”
THE 2ND WORLD CURRY FESTIVAL PENANG CHAPTER The World Curry Festival (WCF) originates from Bradford, United Kingdom and is one of the most popular festivals in the UK “In fact, the city of Bradford, is nicknamed the curry capital of the UK,” says a smiling YB Malik. “The festival draws world professional chefs and industry players from Bradford as well as from other parts of Europe while offering curry lovers and food enthusiast a chance to satisfy their curry cravings with some of the best curries in the world!” With this in mind, YB Malik set out to find a way to bring this curry festival to the food capital of Malaysia – Penang! “It all began when I met with Mr Zulfi Karim, Founder of World Curry Festival in October of 2014 and we spoke about promoting Malaysian food,” he explains. He added, “The World Curry Festival Penang Chapter was formed after an MOU signing making Penang the first international destination outside of the UK for the World Curry Festival to go global.”
“
Penang definitely has it all and one of the best things about Penang is our people.
The WCF was the highlight of the 6th Penang International Halal Expo & Conference (PIHEC) and YB Malik was instrumental in successfully ensuring this world popular festival calls Penang home. Entrusted by the Chief Minister of Penang to drive the development of the State’s Penang International Halal Hub initiative while holding the role of Chairman of Penang International Halal Hub Taskforce. He also oversees the running of nine Halal Steering committees that focus on developing and implementing the sectoral strategies for the Halal industries and services and is also the Chairman of the Penang International Halal Hub Development. YB Malik was also part of the initial task force to initiate business events in the state before the formation of PCEB. “Everything has indeed been set in motion to achieve what we have set out to do, I look forward to seeing the state flourish from the opportunities and exposure that business events will bring to our home and our people.”

he inaugural Global Exhibitions Day (GED) took place on June 8 at Suria KLCC and will be celebrated globally on this same date annually. Exhibition organisers, venues, associations and service providers from countries all around the world are uniting behind this global initiative to promote businesses, products and services. To commemorate this occasion, MACEOS (Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers) organised the national level celebration of GED16 at The Apartment & Bar at Suria KLCC recently. of every June is now recognised as the Global Exhibitions Day and will become an annual celebration for the industry worldwide,” said MAECOS President, Datuk Vincent Lim. “It’s a significant occasion, putting Malaysia in the global scene and it brings together fellow MACEOS members, as well as local and international friends and business associates of the industry,” he said. Face-to-face marketing is one of the most effective media channels to get prospects and clients and exhibitions deliver important face time with potential clients and business partners, attracting a total of more than 260 million visitors every year worldwide. Exhibitions not only have the power to stimulate the market in a particular industry, but also to stimulate economic growth and the development of infrastructure. The global exhibition industry is valued at USD55 billion. Trade shows draw the industry’s leading products and innovations together
under one roof. With 4.4 million companies exhibiting each year, exhibitions support the development of trade and are an instrument of internationalisation. MAECOS is a member of The Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI) and also a member of Asian Federation of Exhibition & Convention Associations. With the support of UFI’s unique network of 56 national exhibition associations, Global Exhibitions Day successfully highlighted the exhibition industry’s significant role in contribution to the global economy. Diven by Paris-based UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, Dallas-based IAEE (The International Association of Exhibition and Events) and numerous association partners worldwide, Global Exhibitions Day is a combined effort from across the exhibition industry. It was launched to raise awareness of the exhibition industry as one of the forces driving global trade and growth.

PENANG: THE ‘REAL’ DEAL Presenting a raw and ‘real’ experience of everything that makes Penang so special, the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) has plans to put the Pearl of The Orient on the map as a preferred MICE destination. By Aleyann Matthews

ny Penangite will give you a million reasons why Penang is the best destination for MICE in the region. Ashwin Gunasekeran, born and bred Penangite, who also happens to be the CEO of the Penand Convention & Exhibition Bureau is no different! “What can I say, we are a melting pot of cultures here in Penang, but that’s not all,” explains Ashwin. “Penang is a truly unique destination, one where guests can experience its rich diversity through our radiant culture, prized heritage, inspiring architecture, excellent cuisine and much more,” he adds.
SAY HELLO TO PCEB The Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) was established by the

Penang State Government in January 2016 to develop and grow the MICE industry. “At this stage, PCEB is focused on positioning Penang as the preferred destination for MICE activities in the South East Asia region. We are actively communicating Penang’s potential and capabilities as a top MICE destination while expanding PCEB’s brand presence. Our Chief Minister, Mr Lim Guan Eng is the Chairperson of PCEB and he works very closely with the team every step of the way. In fact, PCEB was formed as part of his vision to see the state flourish as a MICE destination,” Ashwin says. Penang is no stranger to MICE, however over a decade and a half, there has been substantial growth and a bureau was necessary to be a ‘one stop’ centre to gather data to coordinate
business events seamlessly in the state. “The steady growth was further spurred by the development of premier infrastructure and quality facilities that are able to support MICE activities of larger scales.” Ashwin shares that new hotels, increased room nights and even plans to offer bigger exhibition spaces are all in the pipeline. “Therefore, moving forward, the state government knew that it was crucial for Penang to have a bureau to drive business events in the state,” he says.

Visitors will be able to witness and experience how Penangites live their daily lives, as well as their food and tradition. Now, that’s something different.” “We also realised that besides the diverse unique venues and attractions that Penang has to offer, we have some of the best and authentic Asian experiences all under one roof. Not only that, we also have some truly unique venues and event spaces that comprise of UNESCO listed heritage sites and buildings, colonial bungalows and hotels, a large Botanical Garden, marinas and piers, and many more.” “It was the obvious choice, we would just present Penang as it is and at its best – experiences unfiltered!” he says proudly. Ashwin explains that his team of ten very enthusiastic and capable individuals are all set to take Penang straight to the top. “In fact, we encourage industry partners to join our “Industry Partner Programme” that will make it easier for the team to reach out to relevant industry partners when necessary,” he explains. “I believe that together, we can put the ‘shine’ back into Penang.” Prior to his new role, Ashwin was the assistant vice president of group sales and marketing with Themed Attractions, Resorts & Hotels as well as the marketing manager at Penang Tourism Action Council for seven years, from 2003. There is no doubt that with PCEB at the helm, the industry can look forward to Penang redefining the MICE experience, putting its own stamp on creating irreplaceable meeting experiences in “The Melting Pot of Asia.” For more information on PCEB please visit www.pceb.my

Penang’s Hotel Industry is Raring To Go! Khoo Boo Lim, Chairman of the Malaysian Association of Hotels Penang Chapter (MAH) shares the association’s commitment to increasing tourist arrivals for increased room nights on the island.
A
s the official national network for the hotel industry of Malaysia, the Malaysian Association of Hotels acts as the voice of the industry, working as one body to promote, protect, represent and advance the interests of its members, says the association’s Chairman Mr Khoo Boo Lim. “We make an effort to work closely with the Penang state government and have set up specific task forces to drive destination marketing, destination management as well upskilling our workforce through education and training. In the end, we are all working towards the same goal, to sell Penang to the world,” he says. Apart from being the Chairman of MAH, Khoo is also the General Manager of Batu Ferringhi’s only luxury boutique hotel, Lone Pine Hotel, Penang. However, his career did not begin in hospitality but in sales and marketing. “It was the chance meeting with the owner of the Eastern and Oriental Group in 1998 that changed my career path and the rest as they say is history,” he smiles. “This is my second term as Chairman for MAH and I’m excited to help the association and all its members turn fantastic ideas into reality.” Formerly known as Penang International Hotel Association ( PIHA) Dato’ Eric Lim from Cititel Penang was instrumental in successfully creating the Penang chapter of MAH. “ Dato’ Eric Lim comes with a

wealth of hospitality experience under his belt and he saw the importance of coming together and joining forces with MAH to form one voice to represent the hotel industry in Penang,” says Khoo.
PENANG IS SIMPLY THE BEST Penang has always been a tourist destination, however, there are different groups of tourists that are attracted to the island today. “There is a significant amount of tourists that make Penang their annual pilgrimage and come from as far as Europe and other parts of the world, these group of people have grown with our hotels, with the people and with the island,” says Khoo. He explains however that since Georgetown received its heritage status, there has been another wave of tourists. “Also, with the popularity of social media and the photography opportunities that the Penang street art has to offer, it creates an added attraction.” He also shares that festival lovers come to Penang for the jazz festival, Georgetown festival and many others. “The truth is, Penang has so much to offer, the attractions are endless for any visitor.” As far as business events is concerned, Khoo says that it is obvious that a lot of effort has been undertaken by the state and the private sector to increase business events visitors. “One of the ways they have done this is with the formation of PCEB, whom we work closely with. On behalf of the hotel industry in Penang, I can safely say,
we are excited about the prospects that business events will bring in terms of room nights as well as various venue possibilities within our member hotels.”
WHEN TECHNOLOGY MEETS HOSPITALITY When asked about the main challenge that the hotel industry faces today, Khoo was quick to reply that it was criticism via social media. “It is a powerful tool, some people are truthful and unbiased in their reviews but some can be spiteful and that can make or break a hotel and it is beyond our control,” he explains. He adds, “Therefore, it is safe to say that technological changes in the last decade has affected and challenged the hotel industry as it has for many other industries.” Born in Greenlane, Khoo proudly calls one of the most famous boys school in Penang, St Xavier’s Institution, his alma mater. Khoo believes that the success of Penang as an attractive destination will only be achieved with the ongoing effort by everyone. “Our Chief Minister, Mr Lim Guan Eng is aggressive in wanting to push Penang to the forefront and the rest of us are happy to follow his lead and help Penang reach its full potential.”

All SPICED UP and READY for Action! Penang is playing host to the biggest and latest purpose built venue on the island called Setia SPICE.

Currently, only SPICE Arena, SPICE canopy and SPICE Aquatic Centre are up and running. According to Paul Chan, Divisional General Manager Group Hospitality S P Setia Berhad “The most recent component of SPICE to open is the SPICE Aquatic Centre, officiated by the Right Honorable Penang Chief Minister

on 28 January 2016. The two remaining components, SPICE Convention Centre will open around the first quarter of 2017 and the 453 room, 4 star Business Class hotel will open in 2019.”
IT’S NEW AND EXCITING! Formerly known as PISA (Penang International Sports Arena), the SPICE Arena is the result of a major revamp with a range of state-of-the-art facilities making it one of the most ideal venues to host international events in Penang. However, Chan explains that the brand new convention centre will be the main attraction and a welcomed addition to the exhibition and convention space on the island. Be it to host a private board meeting for 10, a seminar for 1,000, a grand banquet for 3,600 or
a conference for 8,000, the SPICE Convention Centre will be elegantly furnished and fully equipped to provide the perfect setting for a successful event while creating memorable moments. “The 4,546 square meter pillarless ballroom with flexible retractable partition system – can be divided into four smaller halls. Also, there will be 13 supporting meeting rooms and an expansive beautifully landscaped roof garden,” explains Chan. This will also include world-class production and technical capabilities as well as modern state of the art audio system. “The SPICE Convention Centre is a multipurpose flexible venue, as it comprises a variety of function rooms both available on the lower ground and ground mezzanine floors.”
Ø
FULFILLING THE DEMAND IN PENANG Setia SPICE is a joint project between Eco Meridian Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of S P Setia Berhad Group, and the Penang state government. “It is in the best interest of Penang’s Business Events industry to have a purpose built venue to cater to the increasing demand for this segment,” Chan explains. He also shares that the main challenge that they have been facing is getting all five components up and running and delivered on time, although everything seems to be on schedule. “When SPICE Convention Centre opens its doors for business next year, we hope to achieve revenues of around RM10 million. This will include
revenues from our existing SPICE Arena which we currently market as part of SPICE Convention Centre. For the proceeding years, our target would be about a 10% increase in revenue over the previous year’s production,” says Chan. According to Chan, Penang can look forward to a host of international and national events. “After we are officially opened, our first major event will be the World Dance Council (WDC) Professional Latin World Championship in November 2017.” “Setia SPICE was dreamed, designed and built as a world-class destination where the people of Penang and around the world can converge and celebrate life.”
SPICE Facts: • Well connected to major entry points to the island. • Only 5 minutes from Penang International Airport and 15-20 minutes to the Penang Bridge and Ferry Terminal in Georgetown. • Strategically located along Jalan Tun Dr Awang main road, with multiple access points to ensure smooth vehicular circulation. • Within proximity to Penang’s flourishing industrial free trade zone, where over 60 MNC’s are currently in operation. • Offers a diverse array of international and local events, entertainment and recreation. • 7 acres of public park comprising recreational facilities and beautiful water features uniquely situated above SPICE Convention Centre.

G
lobal trade show organiser Reed Travel Exhibitions made the move to further penetrate into the Asian market with its World Travel Market (WTM) brand. In May, Malaysia became the first country in South East Asia to host the inaugural WTM Connect Asia trade show. The South East Asia’s tourism numbers continue to grow with 102 million inbound tourists and 59 million outbound tourists in 2014, with an estimated further growth of 5.9% and 3.8% a year respectively until 2018. This motivated the organiser to test the waters in this market. The event offered unique networking experiences with its one-toone format of pre-scheduled meetings that targets the booming Asian leisure

travel market, allowing exhibitors to exclusively meet with elite international hosted buyers. This made it the perfect platform for the Asian travel industries to conduct business and firmly establish themselves as the fastest growing and most important regions in the global tourism marketplace.
WHY PENANG, MALAYSIA Penang was chosen to host the inaugural WTM Connect Asia due to the island’s distinctiveness, strong heritage and interesting cultural diversity, all of which make it such an interesting destination for the global travel industry players. Its vibrant tourism economic and growth also place it as one of the tourism leader in South East Asia, in which Malaysia have recorded 27.4 million

international tourist arrival has also supported Penang to host this event. The very mention of Penang will surely spark a never-ending conversation between world travellers on the many sights, sounds, traditions and food that the state has to offer. As a fusion of east and west influences, the Pearl of the Orient, as it is popularly known, is one of Malaysia’s most tourist-visited destination that has embraced modernity while retaining its heritage. All these factors combined lend Penang as not only a tourist destination, but the perfect venue for business events as it offers modern facilities and infrastructure as well as unique experiences for business events delegates.
Ø
PREFERRED BUSINESS DESTINATION SINCE THE 18TH CENTURY Penang, in particular, has so much to offer as a business and leisure tourism destination. Since the late 18th century, the island has served as a business destination as it was a shipping and trading port, attracting people from all over the world. George Town was the hive of banking activities, port-related trade, and even high street shopping with European stores and emporiums during that time. This historic part of Penang remains the charm of the island, and has manifested in a melting pot of cultures, architecture, food, and more. It was for this reason, among many others, that George Town was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. Penang showcases the Malaysia Truly Asia brand perfectly and certainly was the perfect combination of charming and wonderful introduction to the rest of Malaysia for the delegates of WTM Connect Asia.
Kek Lok Si Temple at night overlooking Penang.
AWE-MAZING FIRST DAY WTM Connect Asia took place from 18–20 May 2016. Buyers and suppliers from more than 30 countries including China, Malaysia, Mexico, USA, UK, Philippines, Germany, Indonesia and Thailand were welcomed to the island with fun-filled activities. THE SARAWAK BUSINESS EVENTS INDUSTRY GETS A DOSE OF PCM BE Magazine speaks to Kenneth Fong, Chairman of the MACEOS Training and Education Sub Committee about the recent Professional Conference Management (PCM) course held at the Riverside Majestic Hotel in Kuching from 29-31 March 2016.
T
he Professional Conference Management (PCM) is an international course developed to deliver concepts on the planning and execution of convention and conference events. What was the turnout for the Professional Conference Management (PCM) in Kuching? We had a total of 35 people attend the PCM in Kuching and we are very pleased with the turnout. This was the first time we have had the PCM in Kuching. What was the feedback received from participants after the PCM? The participants were very pleased with the course, we never expected to receive such an overwhelming demand in Kuching. Currently, we are in collaboration with the Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) to bring the PCM to Sarawak. Our local partner in Kuching, PLACE has been supporting MACEOS with this and for that we are very grateful.
22
BUSINESS EVENTS MALAYSIA
In your opinion, what is the potential of Sarawak becoming a hotspot for Business Events in Malaysia? What has been done to promote the state as a business events destination? As a ‘2nd tier’ city for Business Events, the local Government via the Sarawak Convention Bureau has been very successful in promoting Sarawak as a Business events destination. To date, it has successfully won many bids, most
recently ICCA that will take place in Kuching this November is proof of the many highlights of their success. Will you be conducting another PCM in Kuching? If so, when? Yes, due to the overwhelming response the last time, a second round of the PCM is being organised in Kuching from 28-30 June 2016. We are expecting at least 25 participants.

TRADITIONAL EXHIBITIONS AND TECHNOLOGY In my last column I reported on the tie up between UBM Asia and Alibaba and speculated the start of internet companies investing in traditional exhibitions. Recently, Hangzhou Shunwang Technology Co announced the acquisition of 51% of China Digital Entertainment Expo (known as ChinaJoy). SHUNWANG TECHNOLOGY Shunwang Technology is a Chinese quoted company providing entertainment software to internet cafes and is an exhibitor at ChinaJoy, China’s largest exhibition for the gaming sector. Whilst there is strategic logic in the purchase, what is interesting is that most of the major exhibition organisers active in China have been trying to buy into ChinaJoy as it’s one of the most profitable and fastest growing independently owned exhibition businesses in China. The company is forecasting a profit before tax in 2016 of USD 10 million but the owners price expectations has put it out of reach. Step forward Shunwang who will pay 350 million RMB (USD53 million) upfront and a total of 575 million RMB (USD 87 million) over three years provided certain profit targets are hit. The initial payment represents a multiple of 27x 2015 profit compared to multiples of 7x to 9x paid by the traditional exhibition companies. So this is more in line with a typical internet company valuation and Shunwang can afford to pay this as they are currently trading on a Price/Earning (PE) ratio of 81 and will raise up to 2bn RMB by placing new shares to fund this acquisition and others. As a reference
24
BUSINESS EVENTS MALAYSIA
point, Reed Elsevier’s PE ratio is currently 27 and UBM’s is 31. It’s not hard to see why the owners accepted Shunwang’s offer over the traditional organisers and arguably they can also add a lot more value to the business. The Alibaba/UBM tie up will be the start of significant involvement of the tech companies in our sector. M&A transactions tend to be primarily in the USA and UK with
very few in South East Asia so it’s good to see Tarsus acquiring 51% of Philippines organiser PEP Corporation. Development in South Korea seems to be the preserve of Reed Exhibitions. Following their partnership with K Fairs for Kormarine in 2014, they have now acquired the Electronics Manufacturing Korea show and three of the Home Table Deco Fairs held in Daegu, Busan and Seoul.

“L

Albert explained that the project involved a team of 20 men split into three teams with each team headed by two supervisors and one senior supervisor. Team one was in charge of unloading, team two for moving and team three for assembling and hoisting the shuttle.
allowed for a three ton forklift with a low mast of 9 feet and below,” Albert explains. The maximum height required to hoist the space shuttle is roughly 20 feet and since installation was done inside the mall premises, only a battery operated forklift was allowed. “This limited the lifting capacity of course, but the team at Felix stepped up to the plate and modified a boom extension on an inverted fork adhering to engineering requirements on compulsive safety lifting methods.” Albert admits that without the extension, it would have been impossible to hoist the space shuttle and place it
to the inverter. “In addition to that, we had well-trained and experienced crew to operate the forklift with an extended tailor made boom,” adds Albert. The team studied the situation carefully and came up with the master plan and executed it flawlessly. With only one week of planning lead time and restricted working hours of between 1am to 7am that left the crew just 6 hours of execution time and only one chance to get it right, it was a task that met the mark of a big challenge. “Nonetheless, the team made it work and the end result was a sight to behold,” he says proudly.
THE TASK “Our task was to stabilise a 800kg space shuttle and to attach it on the tilted steel plate one feet by one feet in dimension in the centre court of the mall,” says Albert. The team faced many challenges that included strict security and safety standards by the venue which meant that to execute the installation, the entire pathway was covered with special plywood and metal 10mm plate as well as styrofoam nylon padding. “Also, the height of the front door entrance was nine feet and limited floor pay load only

MES: THE EXHIBITION PIONEERS IN PENANG Malaysian Exhibition Services (MES) created a small piece of history in November 2014 with the launch of their inaugural Food and Hotel Penang exhibition and conference.
M
alaysian Exhibition Services have been organising a range of quality trade shows for Kuala Lumpur for over 30 years, with some of them now evolving into the market leaders for the industries they serve. Food and Hotel Malaysia (FHM) is one such show with its enhanced reputation making it the natural port of call for a variety of international food and beverage companies looking to target the Malaysian hospitality market. Malaysian Exhibition Services’ General Manager Alun Jones elaborates, “Food and Hotel Malaysia has over the years been a hugely successful trade exhibition showing growth both in visitors and exhibitors year on year. However, despite this success we have always had an ambition to do something
34

like this outside the federal capital.“ Jones also explains that research had already shown them that Penang represented the best opportunity for another trade food and beverage exhibition but the lack of infrastructure in terms of exhibition space had always been the deterrent in taking the plunge. However, Penang has in recent years invested in the necessary infrastructure and so MES took the plunge with Food and Hotel Penang making its debut at Straits Quay Convention Centre (SQCC) in November 2014. “Any new trade exhibition does represent a risk and a challenge but we were delighted with the debut of Food and Hotel Penang at SQCC. The State Government could not have been more supportive and we are extremely grateful to YB Dato Abdul Malik the
State Minister for Religious Affairs, Domestic Trade and Consumer affairs and his team for helping us make Food and Hotel Penang a reality,” adds Jones. Moving ahead, plans are in full swing to bring back Food and Hotel Penang for its second showing in November 2016. Already, national pavilions in the melting pot include Taiwan, Japan, Italy, China and India as more and more international suppliers wake up to the vibrancy and rapid development of the hotel and restaurant sector in the island state. “We see a long term future for this event here in Penang and we can certainly see the show becoming a regional hub for the north of the country, Langkawi’s proximity also gives it added impetus as we look to widen the buyer base in attendance for 2016,” Jones concludes.

The contract to design, construct and manage the Malaysia Pavilion was awarded to Pico Malaysia. Other than to manage the day-today management and operations of the Pavilion, Pico was also responsible for daily events and activities conducted at the pavilion. Interestingly, about 90% of the events and activities conducted at the Malaysia Pavilion were managed and participated by the staff themselves. There were cultural performances – including Traditional Wedding Parade and Wedding Rituals for 4 main races in Malaysia. This weekly event was such a big hit as visitors piled-up the main decumanus to have a glimpse of this show of colors,
beauty and grace. The pavilion also featured a percussionist and singers at the front of the Pavilion on daily basis, including performance of traditional games during the evenings such as bamboo dances, gasing (top) spinning, batik canting, congkak playing and storytelling during the weekends. This pavilion managed to attract more than 3.2 million visitors out of the total 20 million visitors at the Expo – making it one of the more popular and one of the most visited pavilions.
