Dear Readers, As far as milestones go, MACEOS has achieved so many in 2016. The most recent being the MOU signing with Taylor’s University School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts for the Empowering Leaders into Industry for Tourism & Events (ELITE) programme. This programme will see 9 MACEOS member companies participating in an internship programme with high-achieving and highly motivated students studying for the Bachelor of International Tourism Management – Events Management and the Bachelor of International Tourism Management – Travel & Recreation Management under Taylor’s University School of Hospitality, Tourism & Culinary Arts.

Students will have once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that places them on a fast-track path to employment and receive valuable on-the-job exposure and coaching before they graduate. A very special thank you to the Dean of Taylor’s University Neethiahnanthan Ari Ragavan School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts. His forward thinking immersion methods will produce students who graduate with experience and the know how to dive right into the industry and be high performing in their selected career paths. Through initiatives such as these and many more in the pipeline, i can assure everyone that MACEOS is on the fast track to making huge contributions to the industry.

The industry believes that the younger generation is our future and they need to encouraged. The MICE youth challenge was held recently where students were able to develop their creativity and present fresh and unique ideas for the industry.

The students had to apply what they learned in school to gain DATO’ VINCENT LIM real-life experience by conceptualising business-testing and President, MACEOS organising a MICE event. The finalist will be sent to Xiamen, China for the AFECA MICE Youth challenge.

In addition to this, other significant events to mention here include my participation at the AFECA Board Meeting in Singapore recently. Also, there was an Exhibition industry dialogue initiated by MyCEB on 22 August 2016, that saw exhibition specialist come together to discuss and trouble-shoot the various challenges faced. I commend MyCEB for their initiative!

In addition to that, The KL tourism Bureau is now actively involved in the industry and has recently organised a business engagement event to garner business relationships among industry professionals.

Also, In a bid to get our voices heard, some committee members and I had a meeting with Dato’ Ibrahim, Director of Licensing and Petty Trader Development from DBKL. Dato’ Ibrahim was very welcoming and together we had a discussion on the bunting issue that has been affecting organisers recently. We look forward to more one on one meetings with Dato’ Ibrahim to troubleshoot issues.

On 2 September 2016, MACEOS organised an exhibition contractor dialogue that saw contractors come together to discuss and share the challenges faced and ideas on how to overcome their challenges.

We are keen to bring members together for more of these fruitful discussions that is a positive step towards overcoming various challenges.

Our achievements and milestones could not have been possible without the help and contribution of all our members and I look forward to seeing all of you at the MACEOS Forum and celebrating our success at the Annual Dinner, both on 26 October 2016! See you then!

It gives me great pleasure to pen my 6th publishers note for the BE Magazine. When we started this publication back at the end of 2014, it was a journey into the unknown for us as an association.However, since that time over 18 months ago, the publication has strengthened its position in the market place as we continue to seek to champion the Business Events industry in Malaysia.

This month’s edition summarises the recently devised MACEOS road map as we seek to build on the current achievements and chart our course over the next 5-10 years.

But it’s not just MACEOS who are planning for the future, the roadmap idea is also being taken up by MyCEB within the mandate given to them in the Tourism NKEA thinktank and you can see the emphasis the government is placing on BE if you explored the document. It’s guaranteed to be an exciting time ahead for us all!

So a lot of planning and preparation is at hand. However, moving forward to the next stage, we need to apply that preparation in order to turn it into as much reality as we can.

MACEOS training continues to gain momentum and we will be running some more PEM and PCM courses later this year in Kuching and KL respectively. We will also be busy organising the BE Forum on October 26th at Nexus Connection in Bangsar South. We hope the members as well as non- members can support this forum as we have some exciting speakers lined up. Keep an eye out for more updates in our e-newsletter.

Finally, calling all fledgling performers, MACEOS is also organising MACEOS GOT TALENT which is an opportunity for anyone in the association who feel they have got what it takes to enter this inaugural talent show contest, get in touch with Melvin Shu (melvin@maceos.com. my) to find out more!!!

READY TO HIT THE GROUND RUNNING! Upon graduation, students from Taylor’s University School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts are equipped with the necessary experience to be a team player and contribute effectively to their employers.

One of the things that stood out about the Dean of the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts, Taylor’s University is his passion and love for his students. Friendly and approachable in nature, Mr A.R Neethiahnanthan is instrumental in ensuring that his students will be industry ready by the time they leave the comforts of his school. “My team and I create various platforms for our students to indulge and immerse themselves in the industry so that when they graduate they will be an asset to their respective employers.”

Since its inception in 1986, the school takes pride in producing a steady stream of industryready graduates to fulfil the growing demands of the hospitality and tourism sectors.

On 10 June 2016, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Taylor’s University and industry specialists the Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (MACEOS) for the Empowering Leaders into Industry for Tourism & Events (ELITE) programme at its Lakeside Campus. The programme was launched as part of its ongoing effort in exposing and equipping students with real-world experience and future ready skills. Aimed at equipping future professionals for the MICE industry with the necessary skills to succeed in the industry, the industry welcomed the programme with open arms.

“In 2010, we started this programme called Student Employment Programme (STEP) and Future General Manager Programme (GeM), a year later.

These two programmes were established to ensure that the next generation of hoteliers are able to step into their roles, with confidence and a clear understanding of the position they will step into upon entry into the workforce,” explains Mr Neethia.

He adds, “These two programmes are a success and we have top-notch hotel brands working with us

on it which include Shangri-la, Mandarin Oriental, Intercontinental, Hilton and others.”

The ELITE programme will involve nine MACEOS member companies which include AOS Conventions & Events Sdn Bhd (AOSCE), C.I.S. Network Sdn Bhd, ECMI ITE ASIA Sdn Bhd, Malaysian Exhibition Services Sdn Bhd, Messe Worldwide Sdn Bhd, Pacific World Destination East Sdn Bhd, Pico International (M) Sdn Bhd, Setia City Convention Centre and Trade Link ITE Sdn Bhd/ ITE Malaysia). Selected students will be paired to intern with the companies for a duration of 2 years while completing their degree.

“It is hoped that through this long engagement, there is a working relationship that is established and these students will then find employment with the respective companies they interned with,” explains Mr Neethia.

The ELITE Programme will give students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that places them on a fast-track path to employment and receive valuable on-the-job exposure and coaching before they graduate.

Neethia is confident that the ELITE Programme will see the same success as STEP and GeM.

EXPERIENCE IS KEY Keen to produce students who are marketable and employable and who can hit the ground running, Taylor’s University is on the right track with the many accolades they have received through the years. “We are determined to produce students who are able to be thinkers and who will be pro-active in their approach on the job.” Mr Neethia explains that employers today expect graduates to be able to think out of the box and have the essential skills needed to be an effective team player. He adds, “Therefore, it is crucial that students get real life-experience on the job and are able to learn the ropes from the industry specialists themselves.”

for experience and that it makes us who we are in our personal as well as our professional capacity.

“Experience will make you somebody one day,” he says.

“I remind my students not to say no to menial jobs given to them by employers in the beginning of their careers, because it is merely a test of character when they are willing to get their hands dirty,” he adds.

The popular Dean not only with his students but with his teaching staff as well, started on his own path with a Degree in Education and then moved on to a Degree in Law. He believes that learning never really stops, however, his true passion lies in education. He is currently pursuing his PHD in Sociology.

Neethia expressed his gratitude to MACEOS for collaborating on the ELITE programme. “I look forward to MACEOS’ continued support so that together we can produce a new generation of human resource that is productive and well-trained.”

When asked about future collaborations, Neethia said that they are definitely some in the pipeline. “I want to bring the industry into my school, to do that I am keen to speak to MACEOS about conducting seminars for students as well as getting our students actively involved in volunteering for big exhibitions and events by MACEOS members.” He believes that there are many opportunities available when working hand in hand with MACEOS and he is open to further discussions for the benefit of the industry as well as his students.

Without a doubt there are exciting times ahead for education and training in business events producing a breed of MICE professionals that have never been seen before!

DOUBLE CELEBRATION! The 8th Anak Sarawak Awards recognises the best in Sarawak’s Business Events while Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) celebrates 10 years of business events on 5 August 2016.

T

he night was filled with pomp and excitement at the Grand Margherita hotel in Kuching when very proud anak anak Sarawak attended The 8th Anak Sarawak Award ceremony while honouring and celebrating Sarawak Convention Bureau’s 10 years in the Sarawakian business events industry. The Anak Sarawak Award ceremony is Sarawak’s flagship award for the Business Events sector and the first of its kind in Malaysia. It was also a good time for a double celebration when industry partners had a chance to honour a decade that saw Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) seize 424 events that encompassed the arrival of almost 167 thousand delegates from around the world.

As the pioneer of the BE profession, SCB is a onestop centre to assist meeting and event planners to bid for and stage national, regional and international business events in Sarawak and help connect associations, corporate organisations and government bodies with elements needed to ensure success.

THE TOP CHOICE FOR INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES Many of SCB’s 424 victories over the past decade showcase topics of significance to Sarawak or high delegate numbers, for example the 21st Joint Singapore – Malaysia Nursing Conference 2016 (800 delegates), 29th World Congress of the International Association

for Suicide Prevention 2017 and 21st Malaysian Conference of Psychological Medicine 2017 (1300 delegates), the Congress of the Asian-Australasian Association of Animal Production Societies 2018 (1200 delegates) and the International Marine Conservation Congress 2018 (800 delegates).

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS OF THE 8TH ASA! “As Malaysia’s inaugural award for Business Events, the 8th Anak Sarawak Award (ASA) recognized 90 meeting hosts and honoured 7 special winners to acknowledge the contribution of hosts and industry partners to the growth of Business Events,” says YB Dato’ Sri Dr. Muhammad Leo Michael Toyad Abdullah, Chairman of SCB. He added, “BE was virtually uncharted territory in Malaysia until the State Bureau began a decade ago, an initiative that has resulted in the positioning of Sarawak as one of the leading second tier destinations of the Asia Pacific region.”

ASA’s seven special award categories and winners were: Prof. Dr. V. Sivaram of Bangalore University (Outstanding Achievement Award), Obstetrical & Gynecological Society of Malaysia (Convention of Excellence Award), Borneo Adventure (Corporate Event of Excellence Award), Semadang Borneo Adventure (Products and Services of Excellence Award), Imperial Hotel Kuching (Meeting Venue of Excellence Award), Ms. S. Puvaneswary of TTG Asia (Business Events Journalism Excellence Award), and Ms. Charlene Bong of Pullman Kuching (Young Leadership Scholarship Award).

The seven Awardees received marketing and training grants of RM10,000 or RM20,000 to be used for international marketing efforts or to attend conferences – such as the ICCA Congress 2016 in November in Kuching – to build or reinforce influential BE networks, skills, capacities, and knowledge.

TAYLORS AND MACEOS WORK TOGETHER FOR A BETTER TOMORROW The recent MOU signing between MACEOS and Taylor’s University College for the Empowering Leaders into Industry for Tourism & Events (ELITE) Programme is a push forward for the Malaysian business events industry.

n 10 June 2016, Department of Tourism, Events and Recreation under the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts organised a joint event: A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Signing Ceremony with the Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organizers and Suppliers (MACEOS) for the fast track programme: Empowering Leaders Into Industry For Tourism & Events (ELITE) Programme and a forum entitled “The Transcendence of Business Events”.

The ELITE programme MOU was signed by Professor Dr. Pradeep Nair and Mr. Alun Jones while being witnessed by Mr. Neethiahnanthan and Mr. Kenneth Fong. There are altogether nine participating industry members who have committed to train and mentor selected Event Management

WHAT IS THE ELITE PROGRAMME? The ELITE programme is targeted at highachieving and highly motivated students undergoing the Bachelor of International Tourism Management – Events Management (BITEM) and the Bachelor of International Tourism Management – Travel & Recreation Management (BITTRM) under Taylor’s University School of Hospitality, Tourism & Culinary Arts.

It is established with an aim to provide and enhance the selected students with 8 competencies – communication, creativity & innovation, critical thinking, leadership, tourism & event core, cultural competency, selfdevelopment and digital literacy that put them on top of the class in pursuit of their career.

Selected students will have once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that places them on a fast-track path to employment, and receive valuable on-the-job exposure and coaching before they graduate. The programme also provides participating companies the opportunity to map their long-term recruitment plans and secure top-of-the-class talents.

THE RIGHT WAY FORWARD As part of its ongoing effort in exposing and equipping students with real-world experiences and future ready skills, the ELITE programme fits the bill for students as well as for employers. In 2011, Malaysia was voted the best MICE country in Asia and ranked number 29 in the world based on the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) Rankings. Based on this statistics and the obvious growth of the MICE industry, it came as no surprise that Taylor’s decided to create ELITE after its very successful Student Employment Programme (STEP) and Future General Manager Programme (GeM). These two programmes were established to ensure that the next generation of hoteliers are able to step into their roles, with confidence and a clear understanding of the position they will step into upon entry into the workforce.

These graduates command a salary of between RM3,000 to RM3,500 immediately upon their entry into the workforce, compared to their peers who earn between RM1,800 to RM2,500. Taylor’s University College hopes to create the same with the ELITE programme by preparing their students for working life as well as pairing them with potential employers.

THE FORUM: THE TRANSCENDENCE OF BUSINESS EVENTS The forum had 4 panelists from the industry which included Mr. Alun Jones, Vice President for Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (MACEOS), Mr. Edwin Lai, Managing Director of Trade Link ITE Sdn Bhd, Ms. Wong Wai Kin, MyCEB Senior Sales Manager and Ms. Tan Weini, Senior Business Development Executive of Sarawak Convention Bureau.

Panelist had a very interesting discussion on the current trends, challenges and state of the Malaysian business events. The forum ended with a very interactive question and answer session that saw a few very challenging questions for the panelist from the talented students present.

ACQUISITIONS DESPITE THE BREXIT Steve Monnington from Mayfield Media Strategies, UK discusses the continued buy overs in the exhibition industry amidst Britain’s recent vote to leave the European Union.

T

he UK news has been dominated by the EU Referendum, the narrow vote in favour of Brexit and the fears of an economic downturn. Although Malaysia is a long way from the UK, many of the world’s major exhibition organisers – Reed, UBM, Informa, i2i (part of Ascential Group), ITE and Tarsus to name a few – are UK based companies trading on the UK stock exchange. Many of these companies are not only active in Malaysia but in the Asia region and would be affected by decisions made by these companies, all of who are highly acquisitive. So far it’s good news – Brexit has had little immediate impact either on the acquisitions that are in progress or on the appetite to buy businesses with both Informa and ITE announcing deals.

Easyfairs continue their steady stream of acquisitions with their largest deal to date. Evenementenhal, a Netherlands based organiser of 78 business-to-business exhibitions and operator of three venues is in many ways a carbon copy of Easyfair’s existing business. The portfolio of shows cover agriculture, transport & logistics, automotive, shipping and construction held in their own three venues, in Holland’s secondary cities, the deal means that Easyfairs now owns over 200 exhibitions and operates

11 venues. Evenementenhal was jointly owned by H2 Equity Partners Fund, ABN Amro Participaties and two minority shareholders.

Easyfairs also acquired Wonen in Belgium. Launched in 1983, Wonen covers the Construction and Interior Design sector and is held at Nekkerhal, Brussels North. It will be augmented by the co-location of Hout & Habitat (wood, natural construction materials and home goods) currently organized

by Easyfairs in Antwerp.

It’s unusual to see two deals in quick succession from Deutsche Messe.

However, they have announced their move into Mexico with a majority stake in Magna ExpoMueblera, the leading show in Mexico for timber processing, woodworking, furniture production and equipment. Deutsche Messe already

organise Ligna in Hannover, the world’s leading trade fair for wood industry machinery which is held in partnership with VDMA (the German Engineering Federation) as well as WoodMac China and ExpoDrev in Russia,France and South Africa.

Before the Mexican acquisition, Deutsche Messe’s Americas business already extended to USA, Canada and Brazil and their Canadian subsidiary, Hannover Fairs (Canada) added to their portfolio of events with the acquisition of 50% of Truck World, the largest commercial vehicle trade show in Canada. Truck World is organised

by Newcom Business media, one of Canada’s leading B2B publishing companies covering the automotive, trucking, dental, insurance and supply chain sectors.

Kuala Lumpur: How Did It All Begin?

KL was founded in 1857 by a member of the Selangor royal family, Raja Abdullah, who was the representative of the Yam Tuan who administered Klang. Together with Raja Jumaat of Lukut and 87 Chinese workers, he came to explore the district in search for tin ore. After travelling up the Klang River to reach its confluence with the Gombak River, they made their way through deep jungle and found tin near Ampang. That moment

marked the beginning of KL’s development. Over the years it grew from a tin miner’s camp into a commercial centre that was able to attract large numbers of investors from around various places.

After the arrival of Yap Ah Loy in the 1860s, development progressed at a faster pace. In March 1880, the British moved their seat of administration from Klang to KL. With this, the British took charge of the running and expansion of the town and continued its development. This led to KL becoming a revamped urban centre with a completely new look.

KL continued to grow despite two World Wars, the crash of rubber and tin commodity and during the communist insurgency. In 1957, the Federation of Malaya gained independence and Kuala Lumpur was designated as the state capital. In 1972, KL achieved city status and appointed its first mayor. It was

established as a Federal Territory in 1974 and is now one of the most vibrant cities in the world.

Malaysia Makes Its Mark In Physical And Rehabilition Medicine Research

I

n a bid to promote and position Malaysia’s healthcare industry, Malaysia has hosted and won the bid for a number of medical events in 2016. One of the key events of the year focuses on encouraging and supporting the development of a comprehensive medical specialist in physical and rehabilitation medicine, called the World Congress of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM 2016).

The ISPRM 2016 in Malaysia was made possible with the joint effort of Malaysian Association of Rehabilitation Physicians and Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), an agency under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, winning the bid for the event to be brought here in

Malaysia, an excellent accomplishment for Malaysia as the first country in South East Asia to host this significant event.

CONVERGING WITH THE EXPERTS IN THE MEDICAL INDUSTRY The Kesatria 1Malaysia’s ambassador programme established under MyCEB is most often made up of the President or Past President of National Associations or Industry Leaders that have chaired or will be hosting international conventions in Malaysia. They are recognised as thought leaders in their field of expertise and acknowledged for their professional achievements in bidding for and hosting successful major international conventions.

The successful event bid win was initiated and fronted by one of Kesatria 1Malaysia’s ambassador – Dato’ Dr. Zaliha Omar, the President for Malaysian Association of Rehabilitation Physicians – MARP (2012-2014). he Exco is unanimous in its aim to drive our industry forward to the next level. To do this, we need more than just willing hearts and minds, we need a tangible road map to navigate by and to use as a benchmark to measure our success. Our Exco members are also volunteers with a lot of commitments from our day to day jobs, therefore, we felt it essential to get away from the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives to develop this road map which we hope will be our path for the next 5 years,” says Dato

EXPLORING THE MACEOS ROADMAP: ] EDUCATION AND TRAINING Moving forward, MACEOS is committed to this key driver for the industry.

Kenneth Fong the Chairman of the Education Committee explains, “For the BE industry to thrive and grow, we need new talent coming through the system.

MACEOS feels this cannot be left to chance, therefore, one of our major projects over the short and medium

term is to develop and upgrade our own in house training capability.” Kenneth says that MACEOS want to show people coming into the BE industry that there is a structured training programme that employers can tap into to help educate and improve their staff. “But that’s only the beginning, stepping back into the academic sphere, we are keen to entice more and more young talent to consider the BE industry as a viable career path in a world when their choices are wide and comprehensive,” says Kenneth.

Hence, MACEOS will continue to engage with institutions such as Taylors and

Berjaya to offer their degree and diploma students an opportunity to intern with the BE industry. This will be a cornerstone of the association’s education policy moving forward and they are confident that this early exposure will help their members in the perennial problem of finding new talent for the industry.

] MEMBERSHIP Melvin Shu the Chairman of the Membership Committee takes us further down the road map. “MACEOS has in recent times addressed the stagnation in membership that had plagued us in the earlier years of the 21st century.

Now due to increased activities and a more proactive exco, we have seen our membership grow slowly to see us hit that magical 100 barrier earlier this year,” explains Melvin. However, MACEOS is not stopping there! Their key goal over the next 5 years is to double this membership and cement MACEOS’ position as the only relevant voice for the BE industry in Malaysia.

“At the moment, our membership is too KL centric and so we will be going out to widen our net into the whole of the country,” says Melvin. He adds, “ We plan on expanding our membership into the hotel sector as well as the event management and conference organiser sectors as we see these sides of the BE industry very relevant to the activities of MACEOS. To spearhead some of these plans we have already appointed an East Malaysia Representative for Sabah and Sarawak and also for the North of Malaysia, based in Penang.”

] PUBLICATIONS MACEOS is delighted to see the successful adoption of the BE magazine.

Launched in December 2014, this quarterly publication has developed into a key income stream for the association. Alun Jones, Vice President of MACEOS explains, “It’s difficult for any trade association to survive on

subscriptions only, even if you can steadily grow the membership in order for us to be able to function effectively, we needed alternative sources of revenue.” He continues to explain that The BE Magazine was conceptualised to help increase the association’s revenue and at the same time raising the profile of the industry both in the public and private sectors. Since its launch in 2014, BE Magazine has seen its advertiser base grow. “However, like our membership, we need to widen our readership to the rest of the country not just Kuala Lumpur and this includes the conference industry and the event management sectors. But our publicity does not stop there, we need a focus on social media and really develop the association’s impact in this new arenas of communication,” says Alun. Irene Leow one of the new exco members will focus on this area as well as the public relations side and the trade and business media will be an important focus as well.

“But we are not stopping here. A huge issue for our industry now is to ensure that the Malaysian Government understands the benefit our industry can have on the domestic economy,” explains Alun. He adds,” The BE industry brings in large numbers of foreign visitors either for one off meetings or for regular cyclical events that are held

annually.” According to MyCEB, foreign trade visitors spend five times more than tourists.

“It’s our job over the next 5 years to make sure we have done all the necessary research so that we have the figures that back up this claim. So our industry research will go hand in hand with our government liaison to ensure that we are constantly championing our industry to the stakeholders in Government.”

Alun shares that it is an exciting time for the association moving forward. “There is a lot for us to do in the areas I have discussed but we must not forget the need for greater sustainability at a time when green practices become more and more significant. MACEOS is already developing green practices for our members to adhere too,” he says.

“The next 5 years will be such a significant time for the BE industry and we at MACEOS are committed to working even closer with the Malaysian Convention Bureau (MYCEB) and this desire was fully endorsed at the recent exco roadmap. We feel the MACEOS/ MYCEB partnership will make our road map more easily navigable and help to ensure that the needs of the private sector gel with the needs of the public bodies that patronise the BE industry,” concludes Dato’ Vincent Lim.

MALAYSIA’S BUSINESS EVENTS ROADMAP 2020 MyCEB charting the future of the Malaysian business events industry.

LOOKING BACK: 2015 SUCCESS STORIES By year 2020, Malaysia’s tourism industry is projected to contribute RM 103.6 billion in gross national income (GNI) under the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP). To achieve this target, the Tourism NKEA has identified 12 Entry Point Projects (EPPs) across five themes. And business events has been recognised as key contributors to this growth and in line with the ETP strategic priority to focus on the development of high yield visitors. In 2010, Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) was established and given a critical role to establish Malaysia as a leading business events destination.

By 2020, business tourism is expected to contribute RM3.9 billion in the incremental GNI, provide about 16,700 jobs, and with business tourist

arrivals reaching 2.9 million visitors.

Based on the projections, Business Event visitors are expected to grow from 5% to 8% of total visitor arrivals.

With government support and strong collaborations, Malaysia’s Business Events industry has performed exceedingly well, making the country a much-envied new Business Events destination.

Since its establishment from 2010 to 2015, MyCEB together with its strategic partners, won 654 future events comprising international conferences, corporate incentive groups and trade exhibition events which will substantially add some RM4.1 billion in economic impact. In the same period, MyCEB provided support to 1,350 events with the aim of increasing delegate awareness and attendance, their length of stay and spending in Malaysia. These events, which are already booked for

Malaysia, will bring about RM6.8 billion in economic impact to the country.

RECOGNISING THE COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT There is a growing recognition within government and the community that business events make a broader contribution beyond dollars and cents. Business events is a powerful strategy for powering global trade and intellectual engagement. Knowledge is now recognised as the driver of productivity and economic growth, leading to a new focus on the role of information, technology and learning in economic performance. Every government in every country is focused on building knowledge and creative economies. And, the business events supply chain is full of knowledge and creative businesses.

FUTURE READY How assured is Malaysia’s future position especially in the face of emerging regions and destinations who are just as hungry, if not more, for the business events market?

In January 2016, five years after its establishment, MyCEB commissioned a study to review the health of Malaysia’s Business Events through a series of consultative workshops, interviews and engagement with the Business Events industry. The goal was to evaluate current scenarios, identify challenges and gaps, brainstorm solutions and make recommendations to Ministry of Tourism and Culture (MOTAC) and Performance Management and Delivery Unit (PEMANDU).

Additionally, a national road map with clear goals, designated roles and performance measurements was drawn to power the country’s Business Events industry to 2020 and beyond.

This Roadmap is developed using key insights from the groundbreaking Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI) global report on the future of destination marketing. This study found that there are two fundamental drivers for any destination’s success in the world market – the strength of the destination itself and the levels of community support for developing the industry. For a destination to be successful it has to have a strong profile and brand, high performance and strong value offerings; and it has to have broad local commitment,

understanding and support from its workforce, the national associations who are potential conference hosts, future professional thought leaders, the general public, and the government.

The Malaysia Business Events Roadmap will be launched to the industry and stakeholders by 3rd quarter of 2016.

BUSINESS EVENTS MALAYSIA is the official publication of the Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (MACEOS) which aims to promote and encourage the growth of the Meetings, Incentives, Conferencing, Exhibitions (MICE) industry.

In 2014, Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) and its industry partners, secured 152 conventions and corporate incentive bid wins, which will bring in 100,754 delegates to Malaysia between 2014 and 2020, an increase of 25 per cent in delegate numbers compared with same period in 2013. This is expected to create an estimated economic impact of RM970 million.

As a destination, Malaysia has much to offer to attract a large portion of the MICE business that comes to this region. It is ranked among the top 10 destinations for MICE in Asia.

utomechanika Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s leading regional trade fair for the automotive industry targeting trade visitors from ASEAN, is looking for the best mechanics in Malaysia to compete in the Mechanics Challenge to be held during the exhibition, which takes place 23–25 March 2017 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. THE PRIDE OF KUCHING The Borneo Convention Centre Kuching is GBI certified and sits proudly in the capital of Sarawak as its first purpose-built business events venue.

A

s the catalyst project to spur developments on The Isthmus, Kuching’s latest central business district (CBD), the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) was incepted and built with a green mission to be congruent with the master plan for the development of a green town-ship.

Featuring architectural design and functional features that encapsulate elements from the rainforests of Borneo and the green aspirations for a forward-looking and visionary CBD, the convention centre opened its door in 2009 as the first purpose-built business events venue in Sarawak.

CLEVERLY GREEN IN NATURE Its ririk leaf-inspired roof harvests rainwater – fulfilling a green component specified by the Green Building Index (a certification scheme of the Malaysian government) – to cascade to its tropical garden. The building was cleverly designed to achieve effective daylighting, harnessed through expansive glass walls that optimise natural illumination into the concourse through to its award-winning Raintree Restaurant and working spaces.

THE GREEN HOSPITALITY PLAYER Seven years on, and having hosted more than 1,000 events and welcomed 1.3 million guests, the centre continues to project itself as a committed advocate of green and safety initiatives alongside its role as a key business events player.

In its ongoing preservation efforts, the BCCK has incorporated additional green and safety measures in its latest improvement programme to care for front and back of house.

A host of retrofit and makeover works has been executed and completed in stages this year to provide clients with greater support facilities and services.

its Great Hall offer clients enhanced audiovisual offerings with multi-angle suspended lighting and multi-screen projection flexibilities.

The centre has also invested in a mobile roof and truss frame system – additional accoutrements to support outdoor events – which its offsite catering clients can rent should they wish to hold their events in the open air.

The aesthetics rejuvenate the interior of the centre for added ambience. These include walls that have been repainted a tinge of green, refreshed wall panelling in its Great Hall and recarpeting of the entire concourse and meeting spaces that incorporates earthly shades of brown, grey and blue to harmonise with its rainforest theme. “Green” elements such as environmentally-friendly paint and use of green grade, odourless adhesives in the carpet installation were key considerations in the procurement decisions with the ultimate goal of delivering a more pleasant experience for clients and visitors alike.

Whilst not immediately noticeable to the naked eye, the subtle makeover provides an ideal foil, allowing clients’ events to take centre stage against the fresh, neutral backdrop.

Even the humble yet indispensable public washrooms have their share of makeover with newly installed turquoise vanity tops.

SAFETY AT ITS BEST The back of house gets equal treatment with the BCCK management and owner taking a proactive approach to address health and safety concerns including refitting the kitchens with new durable non-porous flooring. The new flooring complements the centre’s ISO 22000 and HACCP food safety management systems.

The centre is also currently replacing all fire-rated doors throughout the premises on a voluntary basis to enhance the structural safety of its building under emergency conditions.

PLAYING HOST TO INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITIONS AND CONFERENCES All major works have been completed timely to prepare the BCCK to host several international events this year.

Education (ICCE 2016) from 15 to 20 August and the 21st Joint SingaporeMalaysia Nursing Conference 2016 to be held from 7 to 9 September.
