PRESIDENT’S NOTE
Dear Readers,
I
DATO’ VINCENT LIM President, MACEOS
t has been an exciting first quarter of 2015, for the The Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (MACEOS). We are moving forward full-throttle to be what the association was set up to be, staying true to our vision, which is to be the leading professional association and the voice of the Malaysian Business Events Industry. The MACEOS Exco has worked together tirelessly to come up with concrete plans to elevate association activities and goals as part of our mission which are: support the nation's aspiration to be the preferred global Business Events hub; attract, nurture and strengthen Malaysian Business Events professionals and; to set and promote sustainable development and industry best practices by Business Events players in Malaysia. In line with our mission, a brainstorming session that was held in Genting Highlands, led to the Exco kick starting the education and training subcommittee. This initiative is in response to one of the biggest challenges faced by our industry – a lack of skilled and properly trained human resources. In this issue of BE Malaysia, you can read about how MACEOS headed by a dedicated Training and Education SubCommittee plan on helping the industry equip their employees so that they
can step up their game and elevate the industry on the whole. Another very important initiative by the association is to arrange more frequent networking sessions so our members are able to mingle and meet each other, to touch base and strengthen ties. Before the Chinese New Year holidays, members got together for a night of food and drinks at Bricks and Barrels, Sri Hartamas. It was a fun night of catching up and members even got a chance to win some exciting lucky draw prizes. Our industry magazine initiative, Business Events Malaysia has also been a part of what we have set out to do. The magazine is packed with relevant articles on the industry and serves as a voice for industry professionals to reach relevant parties and authorities. We hope that the magazine will see continuous support from our members so it will continue to be a driving force among our members as well as the Malaysian convention and exhibition industry. I would like to thank Alun Jones, Vice President of MACEOS and Publishing Chairman for heading the publishing team on the second successful edition of BE Malaysia. You and your team have played a significant role in bringing the Malaysian business events industry to the forefront. Job well done! Happy Reading!

I
am delighted to be penning the publisher’s note for the second edition of Business Events Malaysia. Like any new venture, it’s sometimes easier to start than to continue and so I would like to go on record and thank everyone who has contributed to make our second edition a reality. A particular thank you to all those advertisers who have chosen to support this vital new mouthpiece for the industry with their hard earned money! I would also like to mention the contributors who have also given up some of their valuable time to make our BE magazine an extremely interesting read. Once again this second edition features some interviews with some of the movers and shakers in the business events industry and also contains an interesting update on the MACEOS Education committee. A consistent comment I hear from a lot of our peers into the business events industry. Therefore, one of the most important mandates of MACEOS is to set in place some strategies to address this issue that seems to be prevalent within our industry. In this issue, you will read about how we are working hand in hand with MYCEB to engage with academia and government agencies to plot a course that we hope will foster more young talent in an industry that is brimming with possibilities! Watch this magazine’s future editions for updates on our vision.
We believe that life should always be a mix of work and play and so at MACEOS we try to follow that ethos. You can see this to be true from the pictures of our Bricks and Barrels event that took place on 11 February 2015. It was a fun night of networking and socialising. Thanks to all of you who showed up and hope we will see you all again at our next event! I’d like to share with you my New Year’s wish for the business events industry in Malaysia. I myself and I’m sure all of my industry colleagues wish for the same thing: For more square metres! Only with more space can Malaysia’s business events industry grow into its fullest potential. The industry is excitedly anticipating the delivery date for MITEC and we are all looking forward to the opportunities that will be presented to us in the very near future.

COVER STORY
Business Events In THE HEART OF BORNEO
Dato’ Sri Dr Muhammad Leo Michael Toyad Abdullah, Chairman, Sarawak Convention Bureau, shares the uniqueness of a land he calls home, highlighting its success as the most popular business events destination outside of Kuala Lumpur.
A
whole new world awaits, packed with natural wonders and cultural riches in abundance. Fall in love with The Land Of The Hornbill, over and over again as you take in every inch of this magical, mystical state. “Sarawak is a land unlike any other in the world, which makes it a one of a kind experience,” says Dato’ Sri Muhammad Leo Michael Toyad Abdullah. The state of Sarawak stretches for over 750 kilometres along the northeast coastline of Borneo making it the largest state in Malaysia. Sarawak is separated from the Indonesian part of Borneo (Kalimantan) by ranges of high hills and mountains. Its pristine rainforests are home to orang-utans, proboscis monkeys, killer crocodiles and the

world’s largest flower, the Rafflesia. For adventure seekers, there is an opportunity to take a riverboat up the Batang Rejang, known as the ‘Amazon of Borneo’, to seek out remote longhouses, or fly to the spectacular bat caves and extraordinary rock formations of Gunung Mulu National Park, a Unesco World Heritage site. Besides the splendour in all you see, Sarawak is also famed for its amazing people. Every step of the way, you’ll encounter the warmth, genuine kindness and friendliness of the people of Malaysia’s most culturally diverse state, best hosts you could ever ask for. “One of the things that makes us so unique is our rich culture, Sarawak has more than 40 sub-ethnic groups, each with its own distinct language, culture and lifestyle,” He explains that this

Besides its magnificent view and central location, the centre boasts some of the biggest MICE space in the country. “Our building is purpose built, thus is has an ideal design that is a favourite with organisers,” says Pryor. “ We are able to have simultaneous events, for example an exhibition on the ground floor and at the same time a conference on level 3,” he adds. “This makes it incredible convenient.”

These two offerings are set to give the country’s business events scene an extra boost in an already exciting year for Malaysia. he large deals continue. In my last column I reported that UBM announced intention to acquire Advanstar from Veronis Suhler Stevenson together with the acquisition of Questex by Shamrock Capital and since that time we have seen more activity involving private equity firms. Informa announced the acquisition of Hanley Wood Exhibitions for $375 Million. Hanley Wood has a portfolio of 17 exhibitions covering Construction and Real Estate. Most of the shows are held in the USA but there is a version of their key brand, World of Concrete, held in India. The Hanley Wood acquisition has many interesting parallels with the UBM Advanstar acquisition. Both Informa and UBM have new CEO’s who have undertaken a strategic review and have clearly identified that the USA is a key market and that they need to buy a large business to make an impact there. Both Advanstar and Hanley Wood have been

owned by private equity firms for many years. It is fairly unusual for a business to revert back from financial ownership to being owned by a traditional exhibition organiser and, in order to win the financial bidding, it has been necessary to bid a double digit multiple. I also suggested that UK based Clarion Events might be sold soon and so it has come to pass. After months of speculation, Providence Equity Partners are the new owners. Providence already have experience in the exhibition sector having acquired US trade show organiser George Little Management from DMG in August 2011 for $173 Million and then sold it on to another private equity owned business, Emerald Expositions, in December 2013 for $335 Million. Clarion used to be one of the most acquisitive companies but deals stopped some time ago. Providence will want to reboot the acquisition activity so we can expect them to re-engage with fresh

funds with South East Asia as one of their target markets. Most of the recent acquisition activity in South East Asia has been centered around Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand but this quarter there was a sizeable deal in Singapore. HRM Asia has been acquired by Diversified Communications from Australian venture capital fund, Arowana Capital for Singapore$ 9.8 Million. HRM Asia is a media platform for human resources management with the main HRM Summit taking place at Suntec City. Diversified Communications are a US owned media group who have been steadily developing their business in Asia over the last few years, primarily with events in Hong Kong. Last year they acquired 51% of Kavin Intertrade in Thailand, a company running shows in the franchise, food and hospitality sectors. HRM represents their first move into Singapore. Maybe we will see them in Malaysia in the near future.

xperience and skill in the business events industry is highly sought after here in Malaysia and in the world. MACEOS have taken matters into their own hands by establishing and nurturing individuals to grow the pool of young talents so that the industry can reach greater heights. Recognising the need to build up on our human capital and equip them with the necessary skills to be at par or even better than our international counterparts has been the core of the establishment of the Education and Training Sub-Committee at MACEOS. A chat with the Chairman of the SubCommittee, Kenneth Fong lets us in on just what the industry can look forward to. What is the one of the most difficult challenges that the business events industry in Malaysia faces? The Business Events industry or more fondly known as the MICE industry has

always faced a shortage of talent. And it doesn’t help that many professionals in the Business Events industry either came to it by chance or just ‘bumped’ into it or they learnt it the hard way through the school of hard knocks, a harsh but necessary way to learn. Unfortunately in Malaysia, there is no real formal education for the business events industry. Talent is fierce and well sought after as industry individuals are scarce and few are well-trained and sufficiently experienced. So it’s no surprise that companies were to keep to themselves talent that is difficult to come by. This has to be one of our most difficult challenges and plans have been set in motion to help overcome this challenge. What has MACEOS done to help overcome this challenge? We have established an education and training wing within MACEOS.

Messe Frankfurt events take place at more than 30 locations around the globe. In 2014, Messe Frankfurt organised a total of 120* trade fairs, of which more than half took place outside Germany. In March, Messe Frankfurt presented Automechanika, KL. The fair in Kuala Lumpur is one of 14 Automechanika fairs held in Africa, Asia, Europe and Central and South America. Automechanika Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s leading regional trade fair for the automotive industry targeting trade visitors from ASEAN, attracted more than 6,000 visitors. Also, this year’s fair increased to four halls for the first time, encompassing 7,465 sqm of exhibiting space, a tremendous increase of 49 percent. Featuring more than 240 exhibitors from 21 countries and across regions, which is a striking 26 percent increase in exhibitor number compared to 2013. In addition to offering a leading insight into the ASEAN automotive market
and industry, the show is expanded its European influence as well. In its second year with a European pavilion, the fair saw a 73 percent increase in European exhibition space, and with more European countries than ever before. It was a great opportunity to see the latest from repeat countries such as Italy, as well as new countries including Bulgaria and Poland. The European pavilion follows on from the astounding growth seen in the Malaysian market in recent years. Whilst Europe is now gradually recovering from the financial crisis, the Malaysian market continues to attract companies worldwide due to its stable and secure business environment. And with a high level of car ownership in Malaysia – 341 cars per 1,000 people – there is strong aftermarket potential for auto components and accessories firms. Automechanika Kuala Lumpur is part of the growing trade platform for companies looking to access not only Malaysian but also ASEAN markets, with the European Union (EU)-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce & Industry (EUMCCI) launching the fourth EU co-funded project to support EU Small and Medium Enterprises and even further improve access to the region. According to some estimates, ASEAN exports to the EU would have increased by more than 18.5 percent – this will represent a two percent boost to ASEAN’s GDP by 2020, with a | Business Events Malaysia |
