t has been reported that by 2043 Malaysia will have an ageing population where about 14 per cent of the people will be 65 and above. To prepare for the transition into an aged nation, several mechanism have to be in place to address challenges experienced by the older population, such as financial and health issues as well as inter¬generational care and built environment changes in the home and public spaces, among others. HOMEDEC exhibition has taken the lead showcasing the Aged Care & Living Design showhomes. Three life-sized showhomes, measuring a total area of 450 sqm, will take centrestage at Hall 5 of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre where the HOMEDEC exhibition will be held. The three showhomes are designed by three prominent Malaysian designers who will each render their own interpretation to the concept of designing non-assisted aged care living (low-care living), semi-assisted aged care living (midcare living) and fully-assisted aged care living (full-care living). The showhomes are targeted at homeowners, the architecture and interior design industry practitioners and students, governmental agencies and departments and the public. Apart from the showhomes, HOMEDEC Parts 1&2 offer visitors useful ideas, inspiration, tips and tools to create their dream home. There are also lots of prizes, in cash and kind, waiting to be won. Also up for grabs are two units of Isuzu vehicles. Meanwhile, Monarch Gold Monarch Gold or Ochre Gold has been unveiled as the Colour of the Year 2016 by AkzoNobel’s ColourFutures which also identified four key colour trends. You can rest assured that the design world is going to be bright and beautiful. Also in this issue are several articles that give an insight into ways to help you take your interior space a notch up. earning for a swimming pool that’s designed to last? The Magiline Swimming Pools, one of the most trusted leaders in the European swimming pool market, are built with 10 years warranty to offer you and your family many years of enjoyment as well as a refreshing way to cool off on a hot day. Magiline Swimming Pools have a host of features that go beyond conventional swimming pools. With more than 40,000 pools installed worldwide since 1994, Magiline allows you to customise the swimming pool your heart desires, as no shape is impossible. Thanks to the Magiline filtration system which is three times as powerful as a conventional filtration system, you’ll be able to save up to 30 per cent on your electricity bill. As the quality of water is just as important, the filtration system of the swimming pool incorporates a revolutionary hydraulic concept-the flow multiplier. With this innovation, the volume of water regenerated by your filtration system is many times that of a conventional system of the same power: the system filters up to 20m3 of water per hour using a pump delivering a flow of less than 5m3 per hour. Apart from the unique filtration system, the innovative monobloc construction method of

reinforced concrete and polypropylene wall panels provides extremely high strength, guaranteeing a swimming pool that is built to last. This also ensures pristine pool conditions all year round. Conventional filtration systems require a separate equipment room to house the pump which often results in ungainly aesthetic compromises, especially when working within a limited area. Magiline’s unique pool filtration system is entirely built-in, including the booster and robot/broom connection. The compact and built-in form provides more flexibility in designing the pool and is aesthetically appealing in appearance. Magiline’s pools come with Lightis halogen floodlights. However, if you want to change the ambience in the pool you can opt for Lucie lights which allows you to programme up to 14 coloured ambiences in your swimming pool. It is available as an option on all MAGILINE swimming pools. Magiline Swimming Pools are also built to cater to the warm tropical environment in Malaysia. With over 86 international patents, low energy consumption, minimal water wastage and low maintenance, Magiline Swimming Pools, will, without a doubt, offer you and your family many years of enjoyment.

Designed to complement an exquisite lifestyle of luxury and sophistication, The Apex presents enchanting bungalow homes that ooze modern charm yet retain a rustic ambience. The freehold homes come with land ranging from 7,912 sq ft to 19,461 sq ft. Perched on hilly terrain, the bungalow homes exude a feeling of being “on top of the world”. The floor at the foyer is adorned with colourful earth-toned tiles that add character to the home. The foyer extends into the spacious living room furnished with a combination of unique pieces. A dark brown settee set is complemented by two wooden chairs and a plush shaggy carpet with circular motives. Sporting earth tones, the living room has a low television cabinet with a TV set against a black glossy feature wall, flanked by two windows on either side draped in brownish and sheer white curtains. The bright kitchen spaces receive ample natural lighting from the large windows and are decorated with lightcoloured tiles with contrasting borders to set the tone for a modern cooking space. An elegant timber-panelled staircase welcomes one to the top level complemented by a large floor-to-ceiling clear glass window covered in sheer white drapes. that fronts a sliding glass door covered in elegant drapes, whilst a set of unique bubble-shaped lights hang above the bed. A shaggy carpet and duvet sit at the foot of the bed, whilst a three legged lamp stands at the corner of the room. The walk-in wardrobe at the corner hides the cabinets and dresser as well as a spacious bathroom with glass screens at the shower area and top quality sanitary ware. The master bedroom, family hall and living room sport motorised curtains that can be opened and closed with remote controls. The children’s room features two single beds, a long study table for two at one corner, a wardrobe and an en suite bathroom. Once again elegant earthy tones are used across the room to complement the whole concept of the home. The third bedroom on the upper floor presents a queen-sized bed against a mustard coloured wall overlooking the L-shaped floor-to-ceiling windows and complemented by a white cupboard at the corner of the room. Unique flower-motived lights are fitted at the head of the bed. This room features a bathroom which is accessible from within the room and from the common area.

The AV room comes in shades of grey with padded walls in multi-coloured tones. A black sofa and a red bean bag are cleverly positioned in front of a rollout screen and a projector, and flanked by a side shelf comprising CDs, books and other items. NOVAR has pioneered the laminate floor industry in Malaysia since 1996. Today, the brand name has secured various awards for its superior product quality, service excellence and brand promise. About 80% of INOVAR’s product is exported to Europe, United States and Asia Pacific including the extremely-quality-sensitive Japanese market. Their product range comes with SOLID DIRECT MANUFACTURER’S WARRANTY against staining, fading, surface wear & tear and the unbeatable LIFETIME anti-termite warranty. INOVAR FLOOR has been the preferred choice of reputable developers and builders nationwide as well as worldwide. This is a testimony of the brand’s global quality standards that offers peace of mind and long term value for our clients’ investments. In the ensuing years, it has established its presence in the regional markets and earned a host of accolades that include BrandLaureate Asia Pacific Award for Best Brand in Laminate Flooring (2007-2014) and the No.1 Brand in Malaysia, Japan and Taiwan respectively. Without compromising on product quality and the latest trends, innovation is Inovar Malaysia’s forte. INOVAR’s Green-Tec series “Super E-Zero Grade” is the first laminate flooring to meet the Japanese Industrial Standards – Four

Stars (JIS-F****) amongst the top producer worldwide . Recently, Inovar Floor made the headlines again, having developed first of its kind award winning Nano Shield antibacterial flooring through application of the latest nano technology. Inovar has put on a formidable plan to sustain its brand not only in Malaysia but abroad. It will continue to have a strong presence in the region and is poised to be the leading floorcoverings solution provider through diversification to various products such as luxury vinyl tiles, solid bamboo and wpc decking. Already the largest manufacturer, supplier and contractor for laminated floor in the residential market locally, they are now launching a new range of resilient flooring for the commercial, retail and entertainment segment. Inovar’s Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) are superior to other vinyl tiles available in the market. Inovar’s LVT have a commercial grade wear layer of 0.5mm whereas the conventional market standard wear layer is only around 0.1mm ~ 0.3mm thick. Inovar Click Resilience Vinyl Floor is not only A+ certified for low VOC which promotes better indoor air quality but also comes with 0.55mm scratch resistant wear layer. The product is also 100% water and termite proof. Then there is, Solid Bamboo floor that would be the ideal eco-friendly

replacement for solid timber floors – bamboo takes only five years to mature for harvest whereas natural timber takes up to 60 or more. Bamboo’s strong and sturdy surface is highly resistant to indentations, fading and abrasions. More importantly, with Inovar’s strand-woven solid bamboo flooring, quality is consistent and the product is highly stable. Also, compared to other flooring materials, strand woven bamboo registers 2,500 psi on the Janka Hardness Scale, against 1,925 for merbau, 1,380 for natural bamboo and 1,360 for white oak (Source: American National Wood Flooring Association). This year, Inovar launched its premium range of wpc (wood polymer composite) decking which boasts of superior quality against conventional deckings. An exclusive coating technology provides Inovar wpc decking with maximum protection against the sun’s harsh UV rays, so that your deck stays beautiful much longer. Its unique color technology also ensures that your deck stands out with its naturally-realistic color tones versus the flat and monotonous colors that we often see in conventional counterparts. Vivid Hues for 2016

M

onarch Gold or Ochre Gold has been unveiled as the Colour of the Year 2016 by ColourFutures of AkzoNobel. Now in its 13th year, ColorFutures 2016 focuses on one overall theme, ‘Looking Both Ways’ – seeking inspiration for the future by looking back to the past. Gold and gold tones are being used everywhere in the design world covering graphic design, architecture, fashion, beauty and interior decorating. This colour exemplifies the theme of duality: bright enough to attract attention while subtly referring to the past and the colour of the earth, combining well with other tones. It is also the ‘golden hour’ of dark and light and the colour that appears in the paintings of both old masters (heritage) and modern artists (future).

ENERGY EFFICIENCY AT HOME Between cooling, electricity, water and everything in between, it’s easy to become dismayed at how much energy goes into everyday life. However, there are many options for making energy conservation a simple part of your daily routine, and incorporating eco-friendly values into your lifestyle. Here are some green technologies to consider.

32

1

GREEN FLOORING

A. BAMBOO Consider bamboo flooring and it is a highly renewable natural resource that is also durable and moisture-resistant. B. CORK Replace wood flooring with cork which is a long-term renewable resource. Its shock-absorbent structure translates to comfort underfoot making it ideal for a kitchen or home gym. That also means dropped glassware or china has less chance of shattering. C. CONCRETE If you want to be greener, avoid wood altogether and opt for polished concrete floors, guaranteed to give your home a modern flair.

sense of glamour punk and majestic elegance permeates this home designed by the team from SQFT. As you step into the house, the warmth and welcoming ambience invites you to explore further into the realms of this beautiful abode. Spread across two floors, this home takes on a warm earthy palette with nuances of bronze and copper. The living room carries a cerebral mix of great spatial planning and demarcation. The plushlooking sofa in shades of purplish neutral and white appears cosy and comfortable, with a geometrically inspired carpet indicating the boundary of the living room. The dining area on the other hand is more elevated with hints of gold and an interesting light fixture hanging from right above. he Szczecin Philharmonic Hall in Poland, designed by Spanish studio Barozzi Veiga, won the European Union's Contemporary architecture prize, the Mies van der Rohe Award 2015. The concert hall, which features a zigzagging roof profile and a translucent ribbed-glass facade, was one of five finalists that included Saw Swee Hock Student Centre for the London School of Economics by O'Donnell + Tuomey and Bjarke Ingels Group’s Danish Maritime Museum in Helsingør, to win the €60,000 prize. Other projects in the running were the Ravensburg Art Museum in Germany by Lederer Ragnarsdóttir Oei and the Antinori Winery by Archea Associati, which is buried beneath an Italian vineyard. The winner was selected by a jury who visited all five shortlisted buildings. Completed in 2014, the Szczecin Philharmonic Hall was praised for taking on “a new symbolic role” in its replacement of an auditorium that was destroyed during WWII, and recognised the building's potential to offer “new chances for cultural and leisure events”. “The series of pitched gables which crowns the rectangular complex of the new building dialogues well with the silhouette of the nearby castle,” the judges said. 62

Named after German-American architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the biennial award is the most prestigious accolade in European architecture and is awarded to a building completed in the last two years by a European architect. The façade of the Philharmonic Hall is designed to achieve a homogeneous appearance by day as by night. The vertical shapes defines the structure of the entire volume of the building and is reflected in the silhouette of the building as a whole. The use of glass as the exterior cladding material highlights how the building contrasts with the conditions of its surrounding environment. It creates a bright, transparent and upstanding object. All around the perimeter of the building an innovative system of LED lighting is designed and turns the building into a glowing light box by night. In contrast to the progressive exterior envelope, the focus of the interiors is the use of traditional craftsman’s techniques and materials: handmade hydraulic floor tiles and the use of gold leaves gilding for the symphonic hall. Interestingly, the building’s interiors are simple, large skylights being their utmost defining trait. The symphonic hall differs in that it is a sculpted object, embedded into a barely outlined

mineral-like space. For structural and acoustic reasons both concert halls are built in concrete. The symphonic hall is, in fact, an open box – a light steel structure covered with a carefully designed wooden cladding that suspends over the audience and orchestra and provides excellent acoustics. u

Saturated Colour in Workspace Blue brick walls, pure white details and clear glass complement each other in an office space that has an industrial character PHOTOS BY ILYA IVANOV

pread over 500 square meters, the Optimedia Media Agency office, designed by Nefa Architects, is painted in a soothing mix of blue and white. Transparent working and meeting spaces in this office create a permanent connection as people move from one area to the next. Nefa Architects saw a way of re-thinking the space to resemble modern art galleries. “We opted for an idea of office spaces as modern art galleries. We did not want to make something complex. When designing the working space, we used saturated colour, central to the company’s signature style, and optical effects, “breaking” the real space and creating a parallel reality,” said the architects. The welcoming space at the entrance has floor-to-ceiling clear windows that flood the space with an abundance of natural light. This creates a cheerful atmosphere, while the blue helps calm people down. The office space, according to the architects, looks self-sufficient in terms of design, but it can also be added upon. “The interior may or may not get some additional drawings or slogans or even a new colour in the future. That is the idea. The environment may change, but what will always be maintained is the core expressive substance which is self-sufficient and makes the space complete.” u

An Unconventional Approach To Hospitality

S

pread over five floors of a narrow 17th-century building, the G-Rough hotel, Design Hotels member, in Rome presents a refined collection of midcentury furniture and Italian classics against a backdrop of rough-hewn walls, rustic flooring, and original beamed ceilings. Low-key but polished elegance characterises public and private spaces, while the guest rooms have distinct personalities – some more romantic, others more minimalist – inspired by Italian designers of the 1930s, ‘40s, or 50s. The hotel’s interiors also include an extensive, consistently evolving art collection with works by contemporary names like Massimo Vitali and Mat Collishaw, as well as pieces by young Italian artists. Staging 1940s Italian designers’ pieces with original vintage spaces, G-Rough creates a Fellini-esque visual landscape that meshes fantasy and baroque. In the living room of the Piazza Pasquino suite, classic 1950s furniture abound such as the octagonal coffee table, velvet
