5 President’s Message

3UHVLGHQW·V 0HVVDJH Greetings from MRCA. The first half of 2016 has been packed with excitement, in and outside of the country, including the ever-changing business landscape. Since taking the reins in MRCA, my action plan is to ensure the association puts its members first. Echoing American author William Arthur Ward, “Opportunities are like sunrises, if you wait too long, you miss them.” So, I like to take this opportunity to unveil the revamped Malaysia Retailer magazine which aims to bring more value to our members. The redesigned publication is not just about looks but also content. Look at it as a platform for members to publicise their events, products, and services, among others. It should serve to create and raise awareness not only among MRCA members but the general public on the business opportunities available in the retail industry. I hope up-and-coming entrepreneurs can also glean life lessons, advice and inspiration from interviews and stories featuring our highly successful members. I would like to thank Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Leong Hoy Kum, Group Managing Director of the Mah Sing Group, for gracing the cover of this issue. His foresight, single-minded focus and setting priorities are some of the key factors that account for the success of this premier, fully-integrated property developer in the country. His insights are invaluable for the younger generation who among them will one day aim to emulate that kind of success. We hope, through this publication, to not only reach out to more members, but continue to create, promote, tap opportunities, develop, expand and take the retail industry to greater heights in Malaysia. In this issue, we also delved into the state of the Malaysian retail industry, which is said to have a smaller growth this year. However, analysts agreed that the market is looking up by year end and make a turn for positive numbers in 2018. Have you wondered about the Government’s franchise blueprint? We’ve got that covered in this issue, detailing the good that can come out of it. I would also like to thank all members, including the council members, for their support. I sincerely look forward to receiving full cooperation and support to enable me to achieve the action plan I have identified to drive the association forward. I would also like to thank all the advertisers who supported this issue of Malaysia Retailer and I encourage more members to do so. Look out for the next issue of Malaysia Retailer where we have Tan Sri Lim Wee Chai, Chairman of Top Glove Corporation Berhad, gracing the cover. To all our Muslim friends, I wish you Selamat Hari Raya. Happy reading. “ENRICHING MEMBERS FOR THE FUTURE.”
