GST and The Interior Built Industry YYC Advisors, a leading Malaysian group of professional chartered accountants, tax specialists and GST/business consultants explore the GST and its implementation in the Interior Built Industry.

T

his year, businesses in Malaysia are very concerned about one thing - Goods and Services Tax (GST). Here, we would like to highlight the effects of GST implementation, 10 common mistakes to watch out for and some common problems faced in the industry.

THE EFFECTS OF GST IMPLEMENTATION 2WHICH MAY REQUIRE CHANGES OF

ACCOUNTING POLICIES There are specific GST rules, implications and transitional issues

20

MALAYSIAN INTERIOR INDUSTRY PARTNERS

which may require changes of accounting policies. GST affects how the transactions are captured and Royal Malaysian Customs Department (RMCD) has come out with guides and rules for businesses to follow in the record keeping practices. For instance, the ‘21 Days Rule’ and the ‘Time of Supply Rules’ determines when you need to raise a tax invoice, thus, certain industry practices need to be changed. Remember to include 6% GST in quotations and contracts as not mentioning the GST in quotations and contracts may result in your clients refusing to pay the GST amount to you, the result - you absorbing the GST!

2 POTENTIAL CASH FLOW PAIN

GST definitely has a severe impact on a company’s cash flow, contractors will have to learn how to better manage their cash flow, therefore, restructuring credit terms may be required to prevent cash flow problems. The broad idea is that contractors have to pay GST to suppliers for materials and hardware (input tax) and will then charge GST to clients for services (output tax). But when clients take too long to settle the bill, contractors won’t be able to collect the output tax and use it to offset input tax or claim refunds from RMCD within the taxable period

our office furniture solutions provider, Artmatrix Technology Sdn Bhd won two awards at the inaugural MIIP Awards, catapulting them up the rank as a leader in green innovative office products. CEO of Artmatrix, Herbert Koh says that winning the two awards at the MIIP Awards reiterated and reinforced the company’s commitment to go green and in turn to be the best at everything that they do. Artmatrix took home the Silver in the Innovative Products category for their product, Xenic Chair and the Gold for Artmatrix Factory in the Interior Products for Furniture, Furnishings and Fittings. “Xenic chair was conceptualised by our very own Malaysian designer Joe Leong who was inspired by the dance of the multicolored butterfly. The butterfly wings are used to support and caress your lumbar for a comfortable seating posture,” says Koh. He adds,“Its innovativeness in terms of having and being the first to have a translucent back support system and latex foam support makes it a certified green chair eco-labeled by Environmental Choice Australia (GECA).” Koh explains that having this chair in your office is a stamp of approval for sustainability. The Xenic Chair comes in two frame colours and a combination of seven colours for the butterfly lumbar support together with a choice of various fabrics. This allows for an exhaustive palate of colours for interior designers to create their very own signature product in different environments.

CEO of Artmatrix, Herbert Koh.

The Gold Winner, Artmatrix factory was certified a green factory in April 2014 providing a testimony to Artmatrix’s very own commitment to sustainability. The 85,000 square feet of space in Taman Perindustiran Selesa Jaya, Balakong, Selangor houses 16,000 square feet of showroom space. The 16 year old building is fully refurbished in accordance with the Green Building Index (GBI), industrial tool. The building is now certified for GBI certification. “We find it pointless just to produce green products for the market if we destroy the environment doing it. We push our limits and the management philosophy to encompass the word green to mean everything we do and breathe,” explains Koh, who is a firm believer in practicing what he preaches.“As a reputable manufacturer of interior products(office furniture system) we need not only just provide green products but it is necessary to be the first to make sure our processes and the way we produce it is suitable for sustainability.” When asked about what was in the pipeline for Artmatrix, Koh says that they aspire to be the industry leader in going green, therefore the industry can look forward to hearing about the latest and most innovative green products periodically. Koh strongly feels that MIIP’s dedication towards elevating the industry through the introduction of these awards is a good move, spurring the movement of innovation and creativity. “We are very pleased that they industry has recognised us in our silent efforts towards a more sustainable future.”“It is always an honour to be recognised for our achievements.”

In fact, the company pioneered laminate flooring in Asia, being the first outside Europe. With the best of technology and machinery from Germany, Inovar took the bold step of a pioneering spirit, investing more than RM100 Million, to be the top producer in Asia. Production capacity has reached 4 Million square meters annually. Today, their dream has been realised. Being the top brand in ASEAN, the company prides itself of having successfully completed more than 300 housing projects in Malaysia. Other countries where Inovar has its foothold includes Australia, Taiwan, India and Japan. Brand and branding has been Inovar’s driving force to differentiate itself against the increasing number of products and players in the field. Over time, PJ HQ Showroom. unresolved issues surfaced and

Suppliers and consumers alike need to understand and remember that flooring is the most used part of an architectural product in the home. It is subjected to heavy usage and abuses, to a certain extent. Recognising this, it is only rational and reasonable to provide a flooring that is durable, capable of taking the harsh traffic and constant mopping, apart from its aesthetic value. With the experience and knowledge of the industry plus a reputable brand at its most stable, the management of Inovar finds it fit to expand the business beyond just laminate flooring but taking a broader road of positioning itself as a reliable Floorcoverings Solution Provider. / SPECIAL FEATURE /

From Drab to Fab Find out how you can choose the right colours for your space. By Barbara Jacobs

W

hy do we find one place appealing and are uneasy in another? Why are we attracted to one product over another? Colour— whether architectural or in products—accounts for 60 percent of our response to an object or a place. The “buzz” about colour is usually called “colour psychology.” But the effects of colour are subtle and significant; physical and psychological. Colour use is not something that results in a definitive equation between “colour and our moods,” as is a currently popular expression. Wherever we go we respond to colour, but the importance of colour is often underestimated. Colour use is important to us personally in our homes and in the places where we work.

THINK ABOUT YOUR MOOD

START SMALL

PAY ATTENTION TO LIGHTING

If you’re not sure where to begin with colour, experiment in a powder room or bathroom, a small hall or area between rooms, or an accent wall. If you’re doing your own painting, pick an area that’s quick to do so you can see your results sooner, and be happy with it or change it. Look at the process as an adventure. To get started, select a favourite colour drawn from artwork, a rug, dishes and an accessory or furniture piece as a main colour or accent.

36

MALAYSIAN INTERIOR INDUSTRY PARTNERS

When selecting a colour, consider the mood of a room. In a bedroom do you want the feeling to be restful and soothing or dramatic and intimate? Soft, cool colours and neutrals usually create a quieter feeling while stronger colours are for drama. Do you want a dining area to feel sociable and stimulating or appear formal and quiet? Warmer, contrasting and somewhat brighter colours add to a sociable atmosphere; deeper blue-greens and neutrals will give a more formal ambiance. Do you want kid’s rooms to create an active and exciting energy or an orderly and restful feeling? Be careful not to overstimulate your children with intensely bright hues. You may not know it, but some brighter colours can lead to unrest and irritability.

The reason why paint stores have light boxes for you to test paint chips: • Natural daylight shows the truest colour; • Incandescent lighting brings out warm tones and yellows; • Fluorescent lighting casts a sharp blue tone. So, a strong colour might be too bright and overpowering when used on all walls or next to a large window, but it might be effective when used as an accent wall with indirect light.

FOLLOW THE COLOUR WHEEL

A small colour wheel is a great reference tool for modifying and intensifying two or more colours. For example, red and green, which are complementary (opposite) colours, are most intense when used together. You may be surprised at how many combinations function beautifully together, and you may even become attracted to entirely new colour palettes. The colour wheel also illustrates the visual temperature of a colour. Draw a line from the yellow-green mark on the colour wheel all the way down to the red-violet; you’ll see that all the colours on the left are warm and the colours on the right are cool.

CHOOSE DIFFERENT PAINT FINISHES

A single colour used on walls and trim takes on new significance when applied in different finishes. For example, wall and trim colours can remain the same hue, but use an eggshell (matte and less reflective) finish on walls and a satin or semigloss on trim. The colour will appear slightly different on each surface. It’s a good way to create a cohesive look in rooms with many windows and doors, and relatively little wall area.

/ GOING GREEN /

It’s Time To Get Green From The Ground Up! Here are some sure fire ways in which you can make your interior more environmentally friendly.

B

uildings have a vast impact on the natural environment, your health, and the economy. By adopting green building strategies, both economic and environmental performance can be maximised. Green construction methods can be integrated into buildings at any stage, from design and construction, to renovation and deconstruction. However, the most significant benefits can be obtained if the design and construction team takes an integrated approach from the earliest stages of a building project.

GREEN INTERIORS RESOURCE Choosing the right interior finishes has a huge impact on indoor air quality and consequently the health of the inhabitants. Many popular products and finishes are made with dangerous chemicals that can off gas for years in a home. Contractors and interior designers have the opportunity to help their clients choose finishes that

are environmentally friendly and won’t cause health problems. Here are some key considerations: • TOXICITY Some common building products emit unpleasant and even dangerous fumes that can persist long after homeowners have moved in. • DURABILITY Building materials that hold up to the rigors of family life are worth the investment over the long term. • RESOURCE CONSERVATION Reusing salvaged materials or choosing products that have been made with recycled material means fewer resources have to be committed to making something new. • SUSTAINABILITY As with other building materials, floor and wall coverings come from a variety of sources. The best choices are products that are renewable.

Green Interiors’ Transition Guide cUse paint, adhesives and

caulks that have low or no VOC • Volatile organic compounds are chemicals that can trigger a whole host of illnesses. • Carefully read the labels provided to see what chemicals are used in the product. Become familiar with chemicals that have adverse side affects. • These products should be available at your local home store.

cLook for the Green Label Plus or recycled content carpet • Carpet and carpet backing contains chemicals that can affect the immune system. Carpets can now be made from recycled plastics, natural backing and new materials. • Look for carpeting with low VOC emissions certified by the Green Label Plus program by the EPA and the Carpet and Rug Institute. • Carpeting should be minimised as it holds dust, dander and moisture.

HOW TO GO GREEN?

• Establish an effective interior air barrier. • If available, choose drywall whose core is made with residue that’s taken from air scrubbers at coal-fired power plants. • Choose low-VOC or no-VOC paints, caulks, and adhesives as well as water-based finishes rather than solvent-based products. • Avoid wood products that use urea-formaldehyde as a binder. • Use wood products made with renewable or recycled content. • Consider the distance that building products must be shipped and choose those produced locally or regionally over those that come from overseas. • If carpet is used as a floor covering, favor natural materials such as wool or sisal but avoid products that contain styrene butadiene latex binders and wool that must be fumigated when it enters the country.
