all and impressive skyscrapers adorn the city skyline while 5-star hotels, complete with all the trimmings of quality, await visitors and guests in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Without a doubt Malaysia has caught up with their first world counterparts in the built industry. The evident rapid development of urban Malaysia is sufficient to describe the Malaysian built industry as being a substantial economic driver. The industry contributes 4.7 per cent towards the GDP and it is still growing. This evolution of the built industry in Malaysia is one of fast paced movement and geared toward a common goal – a self-sufficient industrialised nation by 2020. About 30 to 40 per cent of the cost in the

The people behind the scene transforming blueprints into reality are the members of the Malaysian Interior Industry Partners (MIIP). Celebrating its third year, the MIIP have already taken significant steps to develop the interior partners industry in Malaysia. However, it is by looking toward the future, they have plans to make significant changes by working together and collaborating with relevant parties says President of MIIP Dato’ Vincent Lim. t is easy to forget that our lives revolve around a set of specific spaces, that we move every day between our private homes, public spaces and workspaces. Our personalities and needs shape these environments which in turn have great impact on our psychological, emotional, physical and even financial well-being. It’s easy to take for granted the small things, like how more light can make you happier and more productive or a particular arrangement of shelves can subtly persuade your customers to make more purchases. Immediate Past President of the President of the Malaysian Institute of Interior Design (MIID), Mr. Ronnie Choong, is greatly invested in making our society more aware of the importance of our surroundings, and the work that goes behind designing the interiors we dwell in. He was a founding member of the Malaysian Society of Interior Designers (MSID), established in the late 80s. MSID merged with the Interior Designers Institute of Malaysia (Institut Perekabentuk Dalaman Malaysia or IPDM) in 2011 to become what is now MIID. The Institute currently has around 1000 members, and engages with the interior design in Malaysia on multiple levels. “Our primary role is representing the interior design profession in Malaysia. We try to create awareness for the need for good interior design, the need to engage professionals to do this work, and we also actively engage with the government regarding matters to do with legislation and accreditation,” says Choong. This is a large focus for MIID due to the
24
MALAYSIAN INTERIOR INDUSTRY PARTNERS
unfortunate prevalence in illegal interior design practice in Malaysia. Many people are unaware that the interior design profession is legislated by the government and that one requires a license to practice it. Choong feels very strongly about the importance of enforcing these rules for the benefit of all players involved in the profession and industry: “There must be a certain level of control in the profession itself. Our members are bound by a code of conduct and ethics while a non-member isn’t. If they go out in the market and do something wrong, the public doesn’t know and it reflects badly on us, it damages us. We feel there is a strong need to bring these people into our fold so that the public can be protected.” This protectiveness stems from a clear, unabashed pride in the practice of quality interior design in general as well as within the specific local context. “If you look at the designers in Malaysia and the calibre of their work – we are comparable with anywhere around the world,” says Choong with certainty. “People are so well travelled now and they get a lot of exposure; a number of our designers are actually trained overseas, and work or are well known overseas so there’s no difference between them and someone from a different part of the world. Even the training itself; universities here do twinning programmes, have courses that are moderated by a foreign university, lecturers that have been trained overseas – that’s why it’s comparable.” MIID’s focus on education translates into active engagement with educational institutions, to ensure its programmes produce competent graduates who can be then effectively absorbed into the profession. Its
membership includes student members and academicians, to provide that bridge between learning and practice. Says Choong, “We have student members because we recognise them as the future of interior design.” The institute also recognises talent within the industry through its two yearly awards: the REKA Awards for Design Excellence, for innovators who conceptualise and design interiors, and the REKA Awards for Industry Excellence, which recognises the people who produce innovative material or conduct research and development into methodologies and production – those that provide support for the execution of successful interior designs. This relationship between the industry and the designers themselves is not one Choong takes lightly, acknowledging the ongoing need for constant collaboration and interfacing between MIID and the Malaysian Interior Industry Partners Association (MIIP). “We have constant dialogues so that we can look for ways where we can collaborate on activities that will be mutually beneficial. These dialogues are very important. What we bring to the table other than joint activities is what the profession expects from the industry and vice versa, which is important to the progress of the interior design industry as a whole.” Even with more than 20 years of experience, active participation and leadership within the interior design community and industry, Choong doesn’t underplay the progress of MIIP in its fledgling three years as an association. “Of course being around for three years is a milestone for them. It is quite an achievement for them to have gone from zero

MIID, Capable of Being A Regional and World Class Player With a passion for Interior Design (ID) and Architecture, Ar Chris Yap, the newly-elected president of the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID), intends to elevate the status of the Institute and ID profession in the local as well as regional arena, SHARMILA VELLA writes.

ap believes that MIID can reach greater heights and achieve many milestones in the ever challenging and evolving building industry. “We have world class talents who are not only revolutionising the local industry but are making their names known the world over.” “I believe that we can take it to the world platform and show what our local talents can achieve and are capable of. It’s an exciting era where the sky is the limit in the world of creativity and designs. We, however, have a lot of grounds to make up within our country itself, as far as Interior Design as a profession is concerned.” Yap states that architecture goes hand in hand with interior designing as any building or house that is carefully and artistically designed before it’s constructed will save both costs and unwanted cross over of works during the construction and delivery period. “It’s like a perfect marriage. It takes two hands to clap. That’s why MIID has both Architects and Interior Designers in the Corporate Membership composition,” states Yap, a

graduate in architecture from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. The Interior Designers are also expected to write specifications and prepare working drawings, as well as source all materials, finishes, furnishings and provide space planning and furniture placement. In addition they also serve as the liaison between the client and other service providers to ensure that quality standards are met in a cohesive manner. “One of the key roles of MIID is to better represent its members and ensure that the public is clear of the Interior Designers’ roles. Our objectives are straightforward— speak with one voice, increase our strength in numbers and unite all interior design professionals under one roof for a concerted voice,” says Yap who played a key role in the formation of MIID. He had served as Protem Vice Chairman and Deputy President of the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers which was launched formally in 2012. Interior Design as a profession itself as a profession was legislated in 2007 under the Architect Act 1967 (Act 117) & Rules. MIID reflects the union between two former key players in the design industry —
the Malaysian Society of Interior Designers (MSID) and Institute Perekabentuk Dalaman Malaysia (IPDM). “Both MSID and IPDM had co-existed since the 1990s and in 2006, so we started talking about having one single body to represent all of us,” he says as he reflects on the formative years of MIID, when he lead the IPDM Council to meet with MSID formally for the very first time in history. “Foremost on the list that I want to concentrate on are Membership issues — how to increase the number of members as well as enhance ID recognition, its status and awareness amongst Statutory Bodies and allied professions, all for the benefit of Interior Designers.” To start with, Yap believes that registered Interior Designers should carry a prefix before their names in order to identify and distinguish themselves from others, a matter that he hopes the Board of Architects (Lembaga Architect Malaysia or LAM) will grant their approval in the near future. “Having an identity before your name gives the profession its due respect and honour. It’s similar to the medical doctors having the word Dr. before their name and Architects have Ar., so Interior Designers should also

ransforming an interior design sketch into a reality is the job of the interior built professional and one of the main players in the industry is Can.I Interior Fit-Out Sdn Bhd. Starting out with just 4 people, Can-I was founded by Tan Goo Can who is one of the pioneers in the high-end built industry in Malaysia. Since 2005, Can-I has been transforming and refurbishing five star hotels and buildings, securing a turnover of 80 to 100 million ringgit in the last three years. The company seems to fit perfectly in an industry that demands both creative spirits and a ‘Can-do’ attitude. Their two key assets are the expertise and experience of its core management, coupled with their ability to attract, develop and retain a team that can buy, build, assemble and install everything as beautifully as interior designers envision it. Tan is a graduate from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture. After completing his education, Tan stayed on and worked his way up the corporate ladder as an architect and then as a resident architect. He spent his years learning the ins and outs of the trade by working very closely and getting his hands dirty with the carpenters, metalsmiths and other professionals in the trade. “I personally spent hours on site to completely immerse myself in the industry.” My experience across the border taught me a lot about the built industry and I brought that experience here to Malaysia,” he adds. Tan discusses the misconception of the interior builders. “We are better known as contractors but what people don’t realise is we do a lot more than just renovate houses.” He explains that interior built professionals also serve the corporate and commercial markets and encompass a broad spectrum of professionals in all areas of interior fit-outs. However, he states that the industry has evolved over the years. “Compared to those days, clients are far more demanding and have very high expectations of the industry. “Therefore the industry works hard to meet these demands.” Can-I is one of the few interior builders that has its own manufacturing facility in Sungai Buloh. The factory produces custom

It has also become the region’s most important building industry event through the exhibition and its concurrent conference and forums by Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM), all held under the Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival by PAM. ARCHIDEX also clinched the MyCEB/MACEOS rAWr 2013 for the Best Trade Exhibition Award. “With the success of ARCHIDEX I knew that we were on the right track and soon after came the creation of HOMEDEC,” he shares.
