On our cover this issue we have a very celebrated and honourable member of the Malaysian architectural society Ar. Dato’ Sri Dr. Amer Hamzah Mohd Yunus. W
hen speaking to Ar. Dato’ Sri Dr. Amer Hamzah one can’t get enough of his experience and expertise especially when it comes to the topic of heritage conservation. Perhaps it is because, at the very start of his career, he was part of the team that was involved in the first major refurbishment of The Stadhuys in Melaka. Or perhaps it is because his love and passion for his profession is evident in the way he articulates his vast background in the industry. Either way, if you are part of the architectural industry in Malaysia and even abroad, Dato’ Sri Dr. Amer reputation precedes him.
How it all Began Born and raised in Negeri Sembilan, Dato’ Sri Dr. Amer is a graduate from the illustrious King George V (English) Secondary School. “One of the best schools in the country at the time, that was where I spent my formative years. I still keep in touch with my classmates.” He believes that this is where his thirst for knowledge began and carried on even after his MCE. When asked how he stumbled upon the architectural profession he says, “My uncle was an architect and so I was always interested in it.” He then shares that during his first year at Institut Teknologi Kebangsaan (ITK/UTM), he had many sleepless nights and worked hard to

complete his architectural projects. “However, I had no intention of quitting simply because my parents told me that since architecture was my choice I should stick with it, which is what I did.” With his parent’s constant support and encouragement, Dato’ Sri Dr. Amer graduated with a Diploma in Senibina in July 1978, which marked the beginning of his colourful career.
Thirst for Knowledge Starting his career in the Public Works Department (PWD) as a fresh graduate, Dato’ Sri Dr. Amer craved for more. After just a year on the job, he packed his bags to further his education in the UK. “I believe that learning never stops and I really took that philosophy to heart because I was always thirsting for more knowledge,” says Dato’ Sri Dr. Amer who has a Masters of Science degree in Architectural Conservation from the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Architecture from De Monfort University, Leicester, UK. During the course of his higher education in the UK, his two older children spent a lot of time in the UK growing up. “All my children were exposed to living overseas at some point in their lives and they cherished the experience. I have no doubt that the exposure helped contribute to their success.” Apart from his many educational laurels, Dato’ Sri Dr. Amer who has worked in the

various departments in the PWD his entire working life, also sits on various boards and panels. He was a visiting professor at his alma mater, University Technology Malaysia, and is the author of various academic research papers. In the International arena, Dato’ Sri Dr. Amer is actively involved in the Asian Architect Council and is the Chairman of the ASEAN Architectural Education Committee. He is involved in the APEC Architect Project which discusses the mobility of professionals across the 21 APEC Economies. When asked which career milestone was closest to his heart, he spoke of the successful management and implementation of the Ministry of Health’s 25 government hospitals (under design & build and Turnkey contracts) throughout the country, including Sabah and Sarawak.
Subject Matter Specialist As a subject matter specialist, Dato’ Sri Dr. Amer is passionate about the processes and efforts in preservation and conservation on Malaysia’s heritage building and areas. He has contributed significantly in this area of the built environment. “I consult on built heritage conservation issues locally and I have also travelled extensively in the region and abroad representing Malaysia in built heritage conservation works.” However, Dato’ Sri Dr. Amer is very clear about the fact that not enough work is being done in Malaysia to preserve its rich history and he hopes that political agendas will not come in the way of proper care and conservation of Malaysia’s precious historic architecture.
Role of Board of Architects Malaysia (BAM) Apart from his role as Deputy Director General (Building) of the Public Works department Dato’ Sri Dr. Amer is the President of BAM. He explains that BAM was formed to manage the profession and practice of architects. “Therefore, it is the public and the stakeholders’ interests that we take care of,” he says. “We do this by registering practitioners and making sure they abide by the code of conduct stipulated,” he adds. However, his role as the president is to manage the Board. “The Board is made up of various people experienced in the construction industry like architects practicing
in government employment, academia and practitioners, academia and practitioners. And, I also represent the Board in meetings or discussions with the government regionally and internationally.”
MIIP and Beyond As a strong advocate for his industry and all that encompasses it, Dato’ Sri Dr. Amer is very pleased with the strides that have been made by the Malaysian Interior Industry Partners Association (MIIP). “It is highly commendable that MIIP and its members are actively involved in the association. However, the main role of the association should be to create an awareness among the public and the industry and I feel that the association have done this well.” Dato’ Sri Dr. Amer says that the MIIP Awards Night, organised by the association, made an impact. “It made the industry sit up and take notice, which is great for the progress of the association and its members. Also, I’m
very glad to see the publication of the MIIP magazine which provides a platform for the industry to flourish even further.” He reminds MIIP members to consistently toe the line and to serve their clients well, as stipulated in their code of ethics. “This includes not indulging in malpractice of any sort and holding the industry in high-esteem at all times.” He is confident that MIIP will continue to serve the industry well in the years to come.
Staying True To His Profession There is no doubt that Ar. Dato’ Sri Dr. Amer Hamzah Mohd Yunus, who was born in the year Malaysia gained her independence nearly 60 years ago, will continue to play a significant role in the Malaysian architectural industry. Known for speaking his mind, especially when it comes to matters concerning architectural practice, Dato’ Sri Dr. Amer isn’t afraid of stepping on toes if he has to. “I say what I have to say, I’m true to my profession and I always will be.”

Driving The Industry To New Standards Malaysian Interior Industry Partners Association President, Mr Tan Goo Can speaks candidly about his hopes and dreams for his beloved association as he nears the end of his first term.
I
f anyone knows what passion for his industry means, it would be none other than Tan Goo Can, current President of the Malaysian Interior Industry Partners Association(MIIP). Founder of Can-I Interior Fit-Out Sdn Bhd, Tan has been sitting President of MIIP for almost two years now and is pleased with the direction and growth of the association. However, he does admit a lot more can and needs to be done to further grow the association so it reaches its full potential. In an industry that never stands still and thanks to continuous fierce competition, Tan believes that the industry has been driven to new standards and the highest level of artistry and workmanship. Without a doubt, this process has therefore elevated the standards and discipline of all those involved as well. Tan was very positive and upbeat when he spoke to MIIP Magazine recently, which reiterates his love for the industry and the association.

various skills in the interior fit-out arena. For example, members could offer school leavers an apprenticeship in their companies. Then, hopefully, there is a chance of them developing into skilled craftmens or craftswomen. Also, we need to encourage university graduates to give our industry a go by offering a more exciting work environment; a satisfying career and appropriate financial rewards. HOW CAN MEMBERS HELP THE ASSOCIATION ACHIEVE SUCCESS? The association organises various activities throughout the year and we hope that more members will participate. In addition to that, we welcome more members to take an active role in volunteering their time and experience to be on the committee. IT HAS BEEN AN AMAZING YEAR FOR MIIP, DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE ACHIEVED WHAT YOU SET OUT TO ACHIEVE AS PRESIDENT? Yes and no. Although we have convinced many key industry players to join our ranks and play an active role in growing the association, we still have a long way to go in recruiting more members. Currently, we still have many highly experienced, solid industry players out there that could be an asset for the association. I would like to appeal to them to give MIIP a chance so that we can show members exactly what we can do as one big voice for the industry and I can guarantee they won’t regret it. WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THE ASSOCIATION ACHIEVE IN THE YEARS TO COME? The association needs to participate in the training and development of

Many of them have had to set aside their busy work schedule to contribute their precious time to organise and help out in the various association activities. This was done all in the name of promoting Professionalism in the Interior fit-out industry. Many of my committee members have been together for more than 10 years and they still have the same burning passion and enthusiasm for this industry after all these years. Therefore they have my utmost respect and sincere appreciation. WHAT IS THE ONE QUOTE OR SAYING THAT YOU LIVE BY? Can do!

The MIIP AWARDS 2016: A CELEBRATION OF THE BEST IN INTERIOR BUILT The MIIP Awards 2016 was held on 21 October 2016 at the Kuala Lumpur Hilton.

he most highly anticipated event in the interior built industry was celebrated with glamour and style. It was truly a night to recognise outstanding work by members of the association on interior built projects either in the country or overseas. A total of 450 MIIP members, partners, business associates and friends attended the prestigious dinner themed ‘Accrediting Excellence’.
The Awards Held once every two years, finalists were judged on a total of nine categories and a total of 21 awards were given to deserving interior built companies. The awards was a testimony to the passion of the industry and its professionals to continuously innovate and challenge themselves to be on par with their international counterparts. The President of MIIP, Mr Tan Goo Can from Can-I Interior Fit Out Sdn Bhd in his speech said, “Only through innovation can we maintain our position at the cutting edge of the future and maintain the strength of our industry.” YB Dato’ Henry Sum Agong, Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade, Co-operatives & Consumerism spoke about how every industry in one way or another are contributors to the

Malaysian economy, therefore we all play a role. He said, “No industry is too small and we all rely on each other in some way or the other. Therefore it is important to build on our strengths and to overcome our weaknesses together”. He also added, “I applaud your efforts and the strides that you have taken as an association to be an interactive arena for your members”. The MIIP platform allows for interaction and discourse amongst the association members to meet on matters relating to work practice, rules and regulations, design forums and product launches. This is where the industry will work as one and address problems and challenges together as well as be the go-between with professional bodies like Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia and Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers for business and social networking. Also, with one voice, members indirectly get to liaise with relevant government bodies like Jabatan Kerja Raya, Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation and Construction Industry Development Board on issues pertaining to the growth and development of the Interior Industry.

MIID Homedec Reka Awards 2016 Is The Best Yet! Malaysian Interior Designers got together for a night of Bollywood fun, dance and to recognise the best of the best in Interior Design. The Malaysian Institute of Interior Design (MIID) celebrated Bollywood style this time around at their annual ball and awards night held on 28 October 2016. However, the highlight of the night was the MIID Reka Awards 2016, an event that was created to recognise excellence in works by MIID members who are registered Interior Designers as well as Interior Design students. Winners were selected from a pool of MIID practicing professional members who are registered with Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (Board of Architects Malaysia) and student members of Interior Design Schools. The President of MIID, Ar. Chris Yap Seng Chye, who was the head of the judging panel explains that receiving an honour of excellence amongst peers of the same profession takes on a significance in one’s pursuit of his or her profession. He added, ”The satisfaction and feeling of accomplishment upon receiving the award reaches far beyond the basic realm of completing the project itself.” The MIID Reka Awards is a platform where members get the opportunity to display their innovative works and to be judged by their

esteemed peers. Thus, it is the institute’s role to acknowledge the deserving winners by conferring them the awards. To further encourage innovation and creativity among Interior Designers, MIID’s corporate partner, CIS Network Sdn. Bhd. (HomeDec) had introduced two new awards namely, the HomeDec Innovative
Product Award and the HomeDec Good Design Award in conjunction with MIID Homedec Reka Awards 2016. The much anticipated event saw the inclusion of some MIIP members as award recipients for the MIID Homedec Reka Awards 2016. Congratulations to all the winners of MIID Homedec Reka Awards 2016!

REKA Session 21: Have You Registered Your Interior Design Business? Ar. Chris Yap, President of the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID) reminds members to register with LAM to adhere to the revisions to the The Architect Act 1967 and Architect Rules 1996.
I
n 2007, under the Architects Act 1967 and Architect Rules 1996, Interior Design was legislated as a profession. However, in 2015, both these acts underwent revisions that will affect Interior Designers, Interior Design Firms and the overall practice of the profession. In his talk to members through the REKA Session 21 platform, Ar. Chris Yap outlined the urgency for MIID members to register with Lembaga Akitek Malaysia (LAM) in line with the revisions stipulated in the Architects Act 1967 and Architect Rules 1996 that came into effect in February 2015. He explains that failing to register will result in Interior Designers not being able to practice their profession lawfully. Ar. Chris Yap is the current President of the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID) or Pertubuhan Perekabentuk Dalaman Malaysia (PPDM), the national institute representing the interior design profession in Malaysia. It is an amalgamation of two previous

bodies namely, Interior Designers Institute of Malaysia (Institut Perekabentuk Dalaman Malaysia or IPDM) and the Malaysian Society of Interior Designers (MSID). Under Part VA of Act 117, entitled, ‘Special Provisions Relating to Interior Designers’ all Interior Designers section 27A and Interior Design Consultancy Practices (Section 27E) must be registered with the Board of Architects Malaysia in order to provide Interior Design services and in order to be entitled to recover any professional fees. Under Section 27E, Interior Design Consultancy Practice, provides that an interior designer unless registered with the Board of Architects as a sole proprietorship, a partnership or a body corporate and has been issued a certificate of registration shall not be entitled to provide interior design consultancy services for interior works as listed and described in section 27E or be entitled to recover in any court any fee, charge, remuneration or other form or other
form of consideration for interior design services rendered. Section 27D(3) : Registration of Graduate Interior Designer - to ensure adequate practical experience before practising. Section 27D(4): Qualifying Exam for Interior Designer - to ensure competency in accordance to the local laws related to interior works. Ar Chris explains that the process for registration is simple and straightforward and should be done as soon as possible by interior designers. The REKA 21 session hosted by MIID and sponsored by JUNG provided an ideal platform for members to direct any questions they had on the process of registration with LAM.

Section 27D(3) : Registration of Graduate Interior Designer – to ensure adequate practical experience before practising. Section 27D(4): Qualifying Exam for Interior Designer - to ensure competency in accordance to the local laws related to interior works. 27D. (1) A person who holds the qualification recognized by the Board shall be entitled on application to be registered as a Graduate Interior Designer. (2) A person who is registered as a Graduate Interior Designer under subsection (1) shall be required to obtain such practical experience and to pass the examinations as may be determined by the Board in order to be entitled to apply for registration as an Interior Designer under subsection (3). (3) A person who – (a) is a Graduate Interior Designer and has obtained the practical experience and passed the examinations as may be determined by the Board under subsection (2); or (b) is a Corporate Member of the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers or has obtained membership of a professional institute or body which the Board considers to be equivalent to the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers, shall be entitled on application to be registered as an Interior Designer. (4) A person who is registered under subsection 10(2) as an Architect and under section 7A as an architectural consultancy practice shall be entitled to be registered as an interior design consultancy practice.

ad hiring decisions cost you and these costs go far beyond finances.In Fred Yager’s Dice article, The Cost of Bad Hiring Decisions Run High, the Harvard Business Review points out that as much as 80 percent of employee turnover is due to bad hiring decisions. How many of us actually ensure that our hiring processes and plan, meet our desired goals? How many of us ensure that confirmation bias is not at play - the tendency for us to search for, interpret or prioritise information in such a way that confirms our own beliefs or hypotheses?
Be clear about the job position and the title – where does this sit within a particular department and the organisation as a whole? Clarify the reporting structure. Summarise the position, what function it serves and what sort of responsibilities are expected of the role. Be specific about the type of knowledge, skills, language and aptitudes required for the role. Prioritise which you believe is mandatory and which is useful but not required. Review the job description periodically because changes within your business, industry and climate as well as your requirements may change with time.
SPEND THE TIME, MONEY AND EFFORT UPFRONT
Leadership IQ conducted a survey that indicated that 46 percent of new hires failed within 18 months and that 89 percent of the time, it was for attitude, not lack of technical skill. What is attitude? It refers to the manner, disposition, feeling, position, etc with regard to a person or thing; tendency or orientation, especially of the mind. Hiring for attitude is about hiring someone for how they feel and think about something. The fact is a person’s attitude has a bearing on how they work, how they get along with work mates and how they regard their company. Everyone has an attitude. The hiring process should ideally focus on discovering what that attitude is, instead of taking any assertions made at face value. Anybody can say that they have a particular attitude but what you want to do is find opportunities to test that out - early. Early detection ensures you make the right decision. Hiring costs money, takes up significant time and resources and then results in training and onboarding activities to bring that new member into the fold. All of which will

CLARITY THROUGH PREPARATION Think ahead and know who you are looking for. The best way to do this is to prepare a well-crafted job description. It is the first step in your hiring process. It makes it that much simpler because you cannot find the person you are not looking for.

be wasted if you have hired someone who is not the right fit for your company. Behaviour, on the other hand, refers to a manner of behaving or acting; an observable activity in human or animal; the aggregate of responses to internal and external stimuli. Behaviour can be either positive or negative and manifests in the way a person speaks, how he treats another and the particular acts he engages in. Negative behaviours range from yelling, rudeness and anger to telling sexual jokes or making disparaging remarks about a person’s race or culture. The thing is organisations tolerate certain behaviours and not others. It is a wide arc. Behaviours which are not tolerated, inappropriate or even wrong, need to be dealt with. This begs the question, how can we then detect such behaviours early? The reason for early detection is so that the best possible hires are made. While you can help to modify behaviours once these are discovered, these behaviours are a manifestation of a person’s attitude. Lasting change, if any, must come from within, not directed nor demanded from the outside. What does this mean? It means you’re looking to decide on whether to hire a person based more on the attitude a person has and less on their skill set or experience. Decisions based on this are much harder than assessing skill and experience. Skills can be talked about and explained. In some cases, candidates can also show you what they can do through a work sample test. This involves giving candidates a sample piece of work, such that they may encounter in their job and then assessing how well they performed. Experience too, is easier to review and decide on. You can review past job positions held and verify that the candidates worked at those positions stated. Attitudes, though, are a little harder to detect and discover. You have to rely on what you see and hear. You have to be alert and know what it is you are looking for and what to assess. When candidates present themselves for interviews, most times, they are on their best behaviour and they are prepared. In other words, they are on guard which makes discovery and detection that much harder to accomplish. You want to hire for intellectual curiosity, for a willingness to always be learning and to problem solve.

TOOLS AND EXERCISES TO HELP YOU
José Colmenares is a recruiter at Southwest Airlines, an acclaimed airline for the past decade, according to Peter Carbonara in his Fast Company article, Hire for Attitude, Train for Skill. Part of Colmenares’s test tactics included a very involved and revealing group exercise called Fallout Shelter where applicants were told to imagine they were a committee charged with rebuilding civilisation after a just-declared nuclear war. They were given a list of 15 people from different occupations: nurse, teacher, all-sport athlete, biochemist, pop singer and they had 10 minutes to make a unanimous decision about which seven people could remain in the only available fallout shelter. Colmenares reviewed and graded each person - as they got involved in a heated discussion on the topic - as either “passive”, “active” or “leader.”
USE DIFFERENT 2 FORMATS TO PROVIDE A ROUNDED APPROACH The article, Here’s Google’s Secret to Hiring the Best People, an excerpt of Laszlo Bock’s book, Work Rules! published in April 2015 discusses the use of structured interviews - behavioural and situational.
REVIEW THE 3 DOCUMENTS YOU ARE PRESENTED WITH Take a look at the candidate’s application cover letter and resume. Consider what is said and unsaid. Take a look at any gaps and ask pointed questions about the gaps. Assess how candidates respond to the questions, the time taken as well as how
they provide any explanation. Spend more time listening and questioning and less time talking.
WHO ELSE SHOULD 4 BE BROUGHT INTO THE PROCESS WITH THE CANDIDATE?
Most organisations would limit this to the hiring manager, the potential boss and probably a few peers. However, very rarely, will candidates meet someone who will work for them. This is one way Google turns this upside down. Laszlo Bock mentioned this when discussing a few of Google’s secrets to hiring the best people. By meeting the people who will work for them, Google showed candidates how they are truly nonhierarchical. Adding someone from a completely different team (eg legal or finance) can be very useful in keeping the quality of the hire high.
THE REFERENCES 5CHECK PROVIDED
Although you cannot rely on them completely, references provide some help. References are just one more piece of the puzzle, that combined with other pieces help you gain a strong impression of the candidate you are faced with. Discover, where you can, the real relationships between the candidate and the person providing the reference. They may hold clues.
REVIEW BOTH VERBAL 6 AND NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION Honesty in responses can also be verified by the time taken to provide feedback or comment. Cross checks using different questions can potentially reveal inconsistencies.
REVIEW YOUR 7 APPROACH FROM THE CANDIDATE’S EYE In your overarching goal to find the right candidate, remember that the candidate is also reviewing you. Create situations in the interview where enough latitude is provided for people to showcase who they are, allowing them to bring forth their sense of fun, humour, enthusiasm and passion. Consider what the candidate is thinking about, what he might be looking for, what expectations he may have about your company based on what he has read, spoken to others about and what is discussed on social channels. This will also provide guidance as to the type of questions to ask.

Something I once heard Oprah say, resonated deeply. Quoting Maya Angelou, Oprah said that when someone shows you who they are, believe them. In her words, “When people show you who they are the first time believe them. Not the 29th time. When a man doesn’t call you back the first time, when you are mistreated the first time, when someone shows you lack of integrity or dishonesty the first time, know that this will be followed many many other times, that will some point in life come back to haunt or hurt you….” In our quest to hire quickly, to trust someone we’ve had a great conversation with or to solve a critical problem at our company, we may choose to disregard warning bells, however slight they may be. We do so at our own peril. We should not aim to hire people only to work on changing them. We should hire the right people. We should learn how to read people, from the clothes they wear, the way they stand to the grip of their handshake.
FOR SPECIFIC 9ASK EXAMPLES OF SKILLS
Ensure you ask candidates, in your job interviews, to describe specific examples of their skills. This was revealed in a DDI (Development Dimensions International) and ERE (Electronic Recruiting Exchange)
survey about the modern hiring practices which keep organisations on top. One of the top findings indicated that 94 percent of the organisations surveyed already use this kind of interview, that it is so successful that nearly 40 percent of those organisations are planning to do even more in the future. Remember than when hiring for attitude and behaviour, there is no quick fix or simple answer. You’re looking to create situations where you can bring that candidate’s attitude to the forefront. You’re looking to ask the kind of questions that support that process. You’re looking to bring people in, outside the typical hiring team, who can add perspective and neutrality to that process. All these issues make the idea of hiring a lot harder than you might want it to be. However, as Alan Davidson, an industrial psychologist in San Diego said, “The overarching idea is that you hire hard and then manage easy”. Urban Heat Island Effect –
The Heating Of Our Cities Ar Sarly Adre Sarkum explains how our cities are becoming hotter by the day and what we can do to minimise heat emissions.
W
e all have heard the familiar lament among the older urbanites that today’s generation have been spoiled by modern comforts and technologies. For example in the past, cars did not even come with airconditioning yet people were still comfortable. Unfortunately, the change we are feeling is all too real and is a scientifically proven fact. It has been irrefutably proven that urbanisation causes temperature in developed areas to increase dramatically. As cities become larger in size it actually creates its own microclimate. This is due to the materials that we use to build our cities such as concrete, bricks and glass which have a higher degree of heat retention as opposed to the original natural vegetation

from the forest. You will notice that a brick wall will continue to radiate the heat that it has accumulated during the day well into the late hours of the night. Hence the complaint of many single storey terrace owners that they cannot sleep without some form of airconditioning. Imagine this heating process happening in a larger scale, a city wide scale. Imagine how much heat is released into the general atmosphere. I am sure all of you have experienced this situation before: gentle rain falling during a hot afternoon, you expect the general temperature to drop due to the rain but when you actually get out of your house or car and on to the road it seems even hotter. This is due to the tarmac or asphalt on the roads actually releasing its heat via the rainwater, as the rain is not heavy most of the water is
evaporated. The release of heat as well as the increase in humidity will give the effect that it is actually hotter. The retained heat is not the only problem with regards to urban heat island effect, the reflectance of heat towards the atmosphere is another. Generally all surfaces reflect heat differently, this is what is technically known as the albedo. Albedo, simply put, is the measure of the reflectivity of the earth’s surface. Generally when we build a city we change the general albedo of an area, usage of glass especially increases the reflectance of surfaces. In the extreme, when coupled with unfortunate designs it can be as serious as the case of a car melting by the concave surface of the “Walkie-Talkie” shaped building in Eastcheap London. Of course this is in an extreme case, normally we would still feel the reflecting heat as a distinct discomfort even if it does not melt your car. According to studies done by several universities, the range of temperature differences can be as much as 4°C to 6°C in between a tropical city like Kuala Lumpur and forested areas in the same region. This is a huge difference. The impact of this is not just in terms of general discomfort but also in terms of the immense increase in energy to cool many of the buildings and vehicles in these urban areas. We are losing millions of ringgit in energy cost and with the price of energy increasing the cost will get even more and more adverse for all of us. That is why government efforts and green rating tools such as the Green Building Index (GBI) all promote certain measures to reduce the urban heat island effect. Among the most frequently mentioned ones are: • Increasing tree and vegetative cover

whenever possible. This means that there should be more softscape rather than hardscape in the landscape of a development. Even hardscaped areas can be softened by using products such as grassed pavers, or utilising low heat retention materials • Creating green roofs (also called “rooftop gardens” or “eco-roofs”). Green roofs are not only good for preventing the green island effect but actually also helps to insulate the building • Use cool/low thermal retention materials for everything. This applies to pavement, streetscape roofs and other such elements which are exposed to solar radiation. • Use a lighter colour whenever available. This again applies to all elements of the urbanscape from buildings to landscaping. Paint our roofs and walls in a lighter colour. This even applies to our roads, a low albedo value (characteristic of black asphalt), which absorbs a large percentage of solar heat creating warmer near-surface temperatures. Pavement with light-colored concrete mix or replacing asphalt with light-colored alternatives, our cities may be able to lower average temperatures. Of course the best form of mitigation is prevention and future planning. When we plan new communities, we need to look into planning for reduction of the heat island effect. Tools such as the GBI township tool help to ascertain areas of emphasis that needs to be looked at with regard to this. Communities and new townships need to be planned right from the very beginning to fight the urban

heat island effect as to do it in hind sight is far more costly and requires a far greater effort. Communities planning should be interspersed with areas of parks and waterbodies to ensure that the local microclimate is suitably balanced. Good city planning in this regard and heat island mitigation efforts have multiple interrelated benefits, including cleaner air, improved human health and comfort, reduced energy costs, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. A disturbing trend today is the conversion of urban parks and greenery as new developments due to the value of the land that they sit on. Local city councils need to take this consideration more seriously and prevent green areas already allocated for parks and open areas from being developed. Local communities should rally together and create a groundswell of education and a change of mind-set with regard to the environment. Let us together try to stop the mass culling of trees in our urban greenery and conversion of the pockets of green space in the name of progress and urban renewal.

hen you speak to Interior Industry professionals, they will tell you that as rewarding their work is, the complexities involved proves challenging sometimes. Firstly, architectural works and engineering works are confined to statutory requirements therefore ‘fit for use’ takes priority. According to business dictionary.com, the term ‘fit for use’ is defined as effectiveness of a design, manufacturing method, and support process employed in delivering a good, system, or service that fits a customer’s defined purpose, under anticipated or specified operational conditions. In simple terms, the interior industry professional will also be liable if ‘fit for use’ is not met and therefore must exercise reasonable care and skill in the provision of their services.

Anticipation Is Key Apart from the various skills that they already possess, interior industry professionals have to be masters at anticipating issues. Various changes may come into play like enhancing the design or perhaps new requirements may come into play to suit operator functionality during the project which in turn will affect delivery lead time and material availability. Therefore, it is crucial that these potential changes are anticipated and dealt with from the start whenever possible.

SIKA TILING SYSTEM FOR WET AREAS For wet areas such as bathrooms and kitchens, Sika offers a full system: Waterproofing one-component cementitious mortar, elastic and fiber-reinforced; cementitious adhesive with a high polymer content and highly deformable. There is a choice between colored esthetic two-component epoxy tile grout, waterproof with high chemical and abrasion properties, and cementitious tile grouts with a low modulus, high flexibility, mechanical strength and abrasion resistance. This easy to work and cleanable tile grout is water resistant and has low coefficient water absorption, and also includes save color technology, helping to prevent the proliferation of bacteria, fungi and mold. Finally completing the system is high performance elastomeric antifungal sealant.
