Publisher’s Note It is a special honor and a privilege to begin my term as president of the Malaysian Interior Industry Partners Association (MIIP). Our outgoing president, Tan Goo Can, deserves an enormous thank you from all of us – for guiding the organisation so ably and for making us feel that we really are a part of MIIP by spearheading new agenda, interesting events and pursuing our issues steadfastly. I hold a special place for MIIP in my heart. I made the fortunate jump in career to construction after many years of retail marketing and management with Alex, my partner in life and in business. He and I launched ourselves into this crazy, stressful but ultimately satisfying world of interior construction in the year 1988 and we’ve never looked back since. Our first big project at KLCC left a great impression on me during which the American lady designer we worked with was so overcome by passion for her job that she climbed up on one of the tables we made and started jumping furiously. The reason? To test the tables for structural integrity. The kicker? She was doing this whilst being stared at by our entire factory of carpenters. That was just the start of 30 years of excitement in the industry for me. In preparation for my presidency, the last two years has included my contribution as the Association treasurer. This has provided me with an opportunity to be part of the decision making committee and the understanding of the organisation’s financial position. Thanks to the work of all of our committed committee and members, MIIP is in good shape. I am happy to note that most of the committee members for the last term are also nominated and elected to be committee members for the new term and as such it will be smoother for MIIP to continue to work tirelessly to promote and achieve the association’s aims and objectives and be a truly respected member of the construction industry in Malaysia. We will continue with the following Sub-committees for the period 2017-2019:

Industry Government Liaison

Janet Lee President, MIIP

Previously under the stewardship of Jimmy Predeep, Lim Gao Leong and Steven Poh, MIIP managed to garner more recognition and publicity with PAM, MBAM, MIID & CIDB. The new sub-committee is now headed by Steven Poh and Lim Gao Leong.

Membership Previously under the stewardship of CT Tan, and Pierre Favre, the Association will continue to aggressively promote its membership drive with the new committee headed by Michael Chan.

Editorial Board / Website Headed by Steven Poh and Lim Gao Leong, the Association has updated and improved its website and continue with the publication of the Bi-annual magazine, MIIP Magazine. The new committee is now headed by CT Tan, Janet Lee and Angie Ng, and the next publication is scheduled to be in July 2017.

Recreation & Sports We had repeated success in our annual competition of bowling and badminton and I am glad to note that David Cheong will continue as the head of this sub-committee for the new term. I encourage more members to participate in these events to further promote camaraderie and bonding.

Marketing & Social Previously our Marketing sub-committee was headed by Jimmy Tong and Social/Networking headed by Sheanne Lee. Many of our events would not have been possible without the tireless and undoubtedly essential assistance from Sheanne. For this term the committee decided that these two sub-committee will be merged into one and headed by Sheanne and Dato’ Winnie.

Educational & Training We are grateful to Can who volunteered to head this new sub-committee to work with students on training and internship. The organisation’s main focus this year is to elevate our standards of excellence, our quality and our people. Plans are underway to increase the mastery of QLASSIC and GBI in all our members, with training sessions, talks and presentations. QLASSIC is a system or method to measure and evaluate the workmanship quality of a building’s construction. Green Building Index (GBI) is Malaysia’s industry recognised green rating tool for buildings to promote sustainability. As I experience more and more requirements from clients and consultants, I feel that knowledge of the aforementioned standards would be essential in the current age of regulation and technology. Meanwhile, our long term goals will remain our primary focus, which is driving membership, increased member participation, have a bigger voice with relevant government bodies like the Jabatan Kerja Raya, Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation, Construction Industry Development Board and foster closer interaction with MBAM and MIID. So, why should you be an MIIP member and support this organisation? MIIP is devoted to promoting the interior construction industry of Malaysia. This means using all of our resources and clout to expand and improve industry standards, workplace safety, quality workmanship, foster crossmember training and membership and also giving an opportunity for us in this specific industry to have a larger voice in matters pertaining to the construction industry. We provide venues for our members to share their findings-whether in person, print or online – and to establish important contacts to facilitate collaboration. So, thank you for your continued support, and please don’t hesitate to let me know what you think will make us even better!

Meet The President! Get to know the new President of the Malaysian Interior Industry Partners Association (MIIP), Ms Janet Lee who will spearhead the association for the upcoming 2017-2019 term.

I

n an industry filled with testosterone, Janet Lee proudly stands out as the rose among the thorns. Her dynamic personality and spirited demeanor coupled with her highly-driven business acumen has helped her through many years in a male-dominated interior built industry. Together with Alex Chan, her partner in life and in the business, the very successful Jalex Sdn Bhd was formed nearly 30 years ago. Janet’s vast experience in the interior built industry has motivated her to take on the reigns as President of MIIP, where she believes her contribution to the industry will help nurture a more dynamic approach to creating a solid platform for industry players. Although her term has just begun, Janet is ready to hit the ground running and is excited to take on the challenges that her new role demands. Read about how she intends to lead the association to success with a more focused membership drive, more communication among members and much more up her sleeves.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON LIMITING MEMBERSHIP TO ONLY CONTRACTORS AND SUPPLIERS FOR YOUR ORGANISATION? I acknowledge the indispensable contribution of consultants and designers to the field of our local interior construction scene. But as a leading force of change in treatment of contractors, champion of fair rights, a center of recognition in interior achievements and a pillar of support for our peers; I feel it is in our best interests to keep our membership focused and cohesive. HOW IMPORTANT IS INTERACTION BETWEEN MEMBERS IN THE ASSOCIATION? WHAT ARE THE STEPS YOU ARE TAKING TO IMPROVE THAT? Though camaraderie may be seen as a secondary goal of our association, I believe that with more communication between our members, we can achieve a better understanding of each other’s trials and tribulations. And this understanding will ease the work progress of our various individual projects. In order to foster such bonding, I plan to organize smaller but more frequent gatherings. HOW DO YOU PLAN TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF MEMBERS THIS YEAR? The power of word of mouth and the

4

MALAYSIAN INTERIOR INDUSTRY PARTNERS

sincerity and trust behind a fellow man is ten times better than other marketing methods. We urge each member to find other industry partners that are interested in being part of a change in our industry. HOW DO YOU HELP A NEW MEMBER UNDERSTAND THE CULTURE OF YOUR ASSOCIATION? Our committee is open and friendly, while many of our members have years of experience networking. It is clear to all new members that we are an easy-going bunch and they should have no issues being one of us. Of course we are eager to assist anyone that has problems fitting in. WHAT IS ONE CHARACTERISTIC THAT YOU BELIEVE EVERY LEADER SHOULD POSSESS? Perseverance. A leader is always looked upon to shoulder the largest responsibilities, make the hardest choices and push through the toughest of times, this puts an insane amount of pressure to not make mistakes. That is impossible, in the end, everyone makes mistakes. As a leader it is important to not take setbacks too hard and to continually push forward. The next most important thing a leader should possess is not a characteristic; instead it is a strong and supportive team. These two combine into a Force Majeure.

WHY IS MIIP MEANINGFUL TO YOU? I have been in the industry for 30 years, I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly. The situation our members are in currently is not favorable nor sustainable, hence working to change and alleviate our current predicament is both heartening to me and reassuring. Reassuring as our future generations may yet have a fair and equitable working environment. DO YOU HAVE ANY WORRIES OR CONCERNS ABOUT JOINING THE BOARD? Truth be told, I have certain misgivings about becoming the next leader of MIIP. What can I do better than my predecessors? Can I live up to their good work? Will the members be receptive to me being at the helm at such an important juncture of our association? It is with much courage and deliberation that I finally convinced myself that I could and will take up this mantle for leadership. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? I have an incessant voice at the back of my head that says I have not achieved enough, done enough or said enough. This push inside of me has lead me to where I am now, so it can’t be at fault.

QLASSIC: THE CONSTRUCTION STANDARD OF WORKMANSHIP QUALITY Datuk Ir. Elias Ismail, Senior General Manager, Construction Technology Development Sector, Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Malaysia explains QLASSIC and its importance in the construction industry here.

W

ith over 20 years in CIDB under his belt, Datuk Ir. Elias Ismail, is well-versed in the Malaysian construction industry. A civil engineer by profession, Datuk Elias completed his undergraduate education in Manchester before beginning his career in road design back home in Malaysia. One of the most significant highlights of his career includes his time in Gua Musang building roads and water supply for the villages in the area while working under the Public Works department in Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) before joining CIDB in 1998. Recently, Datuk Elias took some time out of his busy schedule to sit down with MIIP Magazine to speak about QLASSIC so that interior built professionals, developers and the public can be educated on this objective scoring system to ensure the quality of workmanship in the Malaysian construction industry.

QLASSIC enables the quality of workmanship between construction projects to be objectively compared through a scoring system. Could you share the statistics on the number of commercial buildings that have carried out QLASSIC in the last 3 years? What is the average score and which building has the highest score? QLASSIC is a system or method to measure and evaluate the workmanship quality of a building construction work based on Construction Industry Standard (CIS 7). It was established in 2007 as a means to enable the quality of workmanship between construction projects to be objectively compared through a scoring system.

The parts that are assessed are architectural and external works through inspection. Many companies including Sime Darby Properties, Metro Kajang, MK Land, Sunway Properties, I&P Group, IOI Group, Naza TTDI and many others are already using QLASSIC. In 2016, 311 of 348 projects were assessed using QLASSIC, with an average score of 72%. The highest QLASSIC score in 2016 to-date is 85%.

Does CIDB intend to enforce QLASSIC and to make it mandatory for certain categories of projects? It would be mandatory for all Government projects exceeding RM50 million to be assessed using QLASSIC from 2018.Under the Construction Industry Transformation Programme 2016-2020 (CITP), the target was for more than 50% of public projects to exceed a 70% QLASSIC score. However, for private projects, we need buyers and consumers to request for QLASSIC. If there is a demand for buildings to be assessed using QLASSIC,

18

MALAYSIAN INTERIOR INDUSTRY PARTNERS

the developers will be pressured to hire skilled workers and use good materials to get high scores. For example, the scores can be used as a marketing tool to convince buyers of the quality of work and if there is a clause that states the QLASSIC score should not be less than 70%, the developers will have to ensure that they deliver the committed quality and buyers will have the right to be compensated accordingly. I would describe QLASSIC as an important examination where CIDB is the examination body and the degree of preparation then depends on the individual developers.

Who are the qualified QLASSIC Assessors? QLASSIC assessment is being carried out by competent assessors appointed by CIDB. These assessors have passed and fulfilled all requirements set by CIDB. Only assessors that pass the training will be registered with CIDB as qualified QLASSIC assessors. At all times, CIDB will ensure appointment of assessors who will conduct assessments with the highest level of professionalism and integrity.

“QLASSIC is a system or method to measure and evaluate the workmanship quality of a building construction work based on Construction Industry Standard (CIS 7).” – DATUK IR. ELIAS ISMAIL SENIOR

GENERAL MANAGER, CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT SECTOR, CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT BOARD (CIDB) MALAYSIA

What are your thoughts on how MIIP and CIDB can better work together to create a solid platform of mutual open communication and understanding for the betterment of the Malaysian construction industry? CIDB Malaysia is working closely with industry stakeholders to promote and implement the goals and aspirations of the CITP. We strongly believe that the CITP is the game-changer for the industry and will pave the way for us to transform Malaysia’s construction industry to become one that is highly competitive, productive and most of all, respected by our peers across the region. To make the CITP a success, we will need the support and cooperation of all industry players and MIIP and its members can certainly be a part of this transformation journey by working with us on the various initiatives under the CITP. Other areas of collaboration between CIDB and MIIP in the future may include a QLASSIC scoring for the MIIP Award entries and perhaps involvement of MIIP in a quality committee. We look forward to open discussions on how to work more closely for the betterment of the industry for all.

What are the objectives of QLASSIC?

• To benchmark the quality of workmanship of the construction industry • To establish a standard quality assessment system on quality of workmanship of construction work • To assess the quality of workmanship of a construction project based on the relevant approved standard • To be used as a criterion to evaluate the performance of contractors based on quality of workmanship • To compile data for statistical analysis Why did CIDB come up with QLASSIC?

Based on personal experience did you ever conclude, “Best not to trust people”

Now imagine if you could change some of these answers.

Do you feel grumpy, irritable or anxious at times?

Think about something you worried about in the past. Now does it still worry you?

E

motions are the ultimate power - they can start wars, cause us to get married or even divorced, have children, even cause illness or health. The intense emotions we feel every day shape and rule our lives. We make decisions, choose activities and hobbies based on the emotions they incite.

WHAT EXACTLY IS AN EMOTION? “An emotion is a complex psychological state that involves three distinct components: a subjective experience, a physiological response and a behavioral or expressive response.” (Hockenbury & Hockenbury, 2007) Robert Plutchik introduced the “wheel of emotions” suggesting that there are 8 primary emotional dimensions: happiness vs sadness, anger vs fear, trust vs disgust and surprise vs anticipation. These emotions can be combined in a variety of ways to create other emotions for example, happiness and anticipation might combine to create excitement. In order to better

understand what emotions are, let’s focus on the three key elements. • The Subjective Experience While people universally experience several basic emotions, experiencing the emotion can be highly subjective. Consider anger. Is all anger the same? Your own experience might range from mild annoyance to blinding rage. Plus, we don’t always experience ‘pure’ forms of each emotion. Mixed emotions over different events or situations in our lives are common. You might feel both excited and nervous when starting a new job. Getting married or having a baby might be marked by emotions ranging from joy to anxiety. • The Physiological Response Recognize that each emotion is located somewhere in the body - heaviness in the chest , a lump in the throat, trembling in the stomach, weight on the shoulders, a knot in the back, hint of tension in your jaw, sweaty palms and wobbly knees, etc. So emotions cause strong physiological reactions, controlled by the sympathetic nervous system

“It’s not the strongest of the species that survives nor the most intelligent but the one most responsive to change” – Charles Darwin

In the past, a good indicator of success was the level of one’s intelligence. Book smarts versus street smarts. Can someone with average IQ be more successful than an IQ genius? Yes, but only if individual has higher level of EQ. Basically, IQ get you through school while EQ gets you through life.

IQ V

Measures the cognitive abilities such as the ability to learn, understand new situations, reasoning, application of knowledge.

S

EQ

Can be described as the ability to use both emotional and cognitive thought. Dr. Daniel Goleman stated that EQ is “simple yet powerful enough to effect change.” If Goleman and Darwin are to be believed, then emotionally intelligent individuals are most able to adapt to dynamic environments and therefore most likely to survive and succeed. When reason tells you one thing and emotion another, emotions hold sway in the short term. It is not that the power of reasoning is weak. It is just that the power of emotion is so strong. So remember when emotion goes up, intelligence comes down!! That’s why in any interpersonal conflict always focus on issues NEVER on people.

There Are 5 Steps To Developing Emotional Intelligence: Learning to use our emotions to benefit us instead of sabotaging us.

1

Be self – aware and know yourself. Talk and listen about your feelings. Be curious, stop and ask, “Wait a minute, what’s going on here? What am I feeling? What am I thinking? What does all this mean for me?”. Observe and pay attention to your feelings which could contribute, distract, enhance or challenge you. Take time to ask yourself what happened for you to feel some of these “regular” emotions such as love, fear, disgust, anger, surprise, happiness, sadness, embarrassment, excitement, contempt, shame, pride, satisfaction and amusement.

2

Understand and develop emotional literacy. Be able to recognise patterns, triggers or emotional hot buttons. Understand how and why you are being triggered and what you can do about it.

3

Apply consequential thinking to make more careful choices. When you are feeling frustrated or upset, before you say something harsh, take a pause to quickly assess the costs and benefits of your action. Gather your thoughts before you speak. In the heat of the moment if it feels good, don’t do it! This is the hidden cost of negative emotions. Engage your cognitive ability such as doing a mental calculation when your emotion rises uncontrollably!

4

Learn to navigate and manage your emotions. Ask, “What can I do about it?”. There are many tools, techniques even strategies you can use to cope with moods, regulate impulses and exercise emotional self -control. You do not have to be at the mercy of your negative emotions.

5

Engage in intrinsic motivation, stress management and exercising optimism.

which is charged with controlling the body’s fight-or-flight reactions. • The Behavioral Response We express our emotions through sensations or feelings and the words we use. We spend a lot of time interpreting the emotional expressions of the people around us. This ability to accurately understand these expressions are known as emotional intelligence. Many expressions are universal such as a smile indicating joy or pleasure or a frown indicating uncertainty or displeasure.

WHERE DO EMOTIONS COME FROM? WHAT IS THEIR PURPOSE? HOW DO WE DEAL WITH EMOTIONS? Emotions are formed each time we make a movement. The best definition would be emotion is energy in motion. So the most

effective technique to handle negative emotion would be to use our voice and pure physical movements. Brain scans have shown that though the amygdala (part of the limbic system) is tiny, it controls all our emotional reactions (especially fear), behavior, memory and motivation. This brings us to the issue of intelligence quotient (IQ) versus emotional quotient (EQ).

THE POWER OF EMOTIONS – KNOWING YOUR EMOTIONS We have negative emotions of fear, frustration, hurt, angry, worry, depressed, grief, anger, disappointment. But we can also feel joyous, euphoric, awesome, excited, passionate, successful, curious, ecstasy, confidence, power. There is no such thing as bad or good emotions. The secret is not to never have negative emotions as this is not realistic and a state of denial. Rather we should use negative emotion

The Messages of 10 Common Negative Emotions • FEAR Concern, worry, anxiety, terrified. You need to

prepare yourself to face and deal with something. If you deny, surrender or avoid fear , it only gets stronger and worse as you have merely amplified it.

• GUILT OR REGRET Serves you if you hear its message.

• HURT Sense of loss of trust or intimacy. Is there really a

loss? Is it problem of perception? Can you communicate the needs? Can you change behavior? For example a person has died. Say, maybe he/she is in a better place now?

Means you’ve violated your own standards. People usually deny guilt as a way of not feeling guilty. Face guilt because it will always come back to get you. But don’t stay in guilt. You will feel inferior if you feel regretful the rest of your life. Clean your act and don’t violate your own rules. Keep on track, move forward to be a better person. Don’t wallow in guilt or regret.

• ANGER FROM MILDLY ANGRY TO LIVID TO FURIOUS

• INADEQUACY Not measure up, lack self confidence,

TO UNCONTROLLABLE RAGE This means an important rule in your life has been violated by someone in your life. Can you communicate your real needs in a different way? Can you change the way you communicate or change your behavior or procedure? Anger comes out of hurt. Clarify what your rules or standards are. Be prepare to compromise on your standards as not everyone can follow your standards, sometimes.

• FRUSTRATION Feeling of being held back and hindered in pursuit of some goal. Change approach to changing goals. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expect different results. You need more flexibility.

• DISAPPOINTMENT Sad, not achieving your expectation or

outcome. Maybe there’s a need to change your expectation. Maybe there was not enough time to achieve your outcome. Set S.M.A.R.T.E.R. goals. Make goal or time schedule more flexible. Sometimes there is a lag time to rewards. Appropriate outcome to be taken within context of time, people, resources available at that point of time.

24

Uncomfortable – something that bugs and bothers but it does not have a tremendous impact.

MALAYSIAN INTERIOR INDUSTRY PARTNERS

feeling of not being worthy of something or someone. Message – do something to improve yourself but not to be perfect. Get off your butt and improve yourself. Ask a better question: “Are you truly inadequate or just merely your perception?”

• OVERLOAD & OVERWHELMED

/DEPRESSED Hopeless, depressed, feel taking on more than you can handle or deal with. You need to reevaluate and make a list of what is necessity versus desire. Create priority to the list. Take first one on list & just do it! Deal with one thing at a time. Constantly clarify what is important versus what is urgent. Important is not equal to urgent!

• LONELINESS Message of connection with people. Not

necessary sexual or intimacy but rather basic friendship like having someone to talk to, have a laugh with, share happy moments, just be with people. Then take the appropriate action – join a club, initiate a conversation, be caring towards people ….

Always remember you have the power and the choice to change either perception, communication, behavior/action or approach/procedure. The steps to take can be summarized as follows:

as a call for action, a message, a signal that something needs to be changed in your life, your perception, your behavior. Emotions add meaning and power to our lives by allowing us to move forward. Painful emotions can be our best friend if we use them as signals for change. When we don’t follow our own rules or standards, we start to feel pain. So negative emotions actually have a purpose to help us check and eliminate that pain.

THERE ARE BASICALLY FOUR WAYS HUMAN BEINGS DEAL WITH EMOTIONS: 1. Deny the emotion that is they try not to feel when they are experiencing emotions they don’t like. But this is dangerous for example a person who fears rejection and for this person to succeed in avoiding rejection, he will have to cut out all connection and relationships with people. This would mean avoiding all forms of love, building intimacy and close connection with others. 2. Endure the emotion by saying, ”I don’t feel so bad” but yet they feel the emotion internally. They try to dissociate from it yet they can never change their internal focus or internal talk or their physiology. 3. Tend to use emotion as competition as to how bad they are feeling. “I’ll show you

1. Identify the signal or emotion. 2. Appreciate the message, communication, perception or behavior. Recognize the value of the signal and decide what or whether to change. 3. Be curious, “What’s the meaning of this message?” Which direction do you want to move? What is this feeling trying to tell you instead of only experiencing pain. What are you going to do? How are you going to handle so that you don’t feel this way?. What can you learn from this? Are you contributing to this emotion due to your own rules? 4. Get certain you can handle and rehearse many times in your head. Find out what to change, how to communicate your needs so they know and respect your value or change your behavior. 5. What can you learn from all this? Get excited! 6. Remember the last time you experienced this emotion, you were able to handle or deal with it, how did you do it?. Hear the message of the emotion and act, instead of surrendering, denying or avoiding it. 7. Have fun to enjoy converting pain to pleasure and to choose tremendous pleasure!

terrible!” Comparing and making a match as to how bad they feel or someone else cannot be worse than them. 4. They can learn from and utilise emotions which is emotional intelligence.

NEGATIVE EMOTIONS AND HOW TO DEAL WITH THEM All feelings of anger, frustration, worry, depression, unhappiness are created by one person – YOU! The way you choose to focus and the meaning you attach to life. We spend a lot of time on negative emotions by spending time avoiding them! Negative emotion is a signal or message that some changes or action are required. For example fear - terrified, concern, worry over something. Because fear is so painful, we try to avoid fear or even deny fear is there. But fear is telling us to prepare for something is about to happen and we have to deal with it.

DO YOU WANT AN ANSWER HOW TO CHANGE INSTANTLY AND TO GET OUT OF THE NEGATIVE FEELING? Identify the negative feeling and the signal it is producing. For example something happens between you and your spouse to make you feel rejected. Decide is this an uncomfortable feeling? Or is it hurt, anger or loneliness? Maybe he was buried in the newspapers and was ignoring what you are saying to him. You may decide it is not so serious, it is just merely an uncomfortable feeling. Or you can start hallucinating that he is starting to get bored with you or he doesn’t love you so much. However to get out of this feeling you have to… • Change state • Clarify what you want • Immediately do something and take action – communicate to him what you want him to do But if you identify the feeling as something deeper like a feeling of hurt by his indifference,

/ FEATURE / Do not plant seeds of disappointment or fear but plant seeds of love, care and greatness in your mind garden and have a juicy life with these 10 wonderful emotions. then that signals a different message. Your expectation is not met so there is a feeling of a sense of loss which is a more intense emotion that just being uncomfortable. Here perception could be that the husband does not love you so much now. Hurt brings along pain if not handled right. Ask “Is it appropriate at this time to feel like this with this person?” Can you change your perception? Not that he does not love you anymore, maybe he is just too busy or wrapped up in his work. He just has some work issues to deal with. Can you change procedure or approach? His present behavior is not giving you the result you desire or want. Perhaps you can communicate with him how you are feeling and that you just want 3 minutes of his time to talk to him or to hold him. Or to connect with him. If it is anger you are feeling, it means your standards are not being met by any person including yourself. In this case your standard that is important to you is being ignored. “I need to change me!” Change the way you look at things, your perception, change the way you communicate your desires, change your behavior, change your expectation or even emotion. The signal of a negative emotion does not go away, it merely intensifies over time and gets worse.

1 2 3

Love and warmth Cultivate them so it will happen automatically. Appreciation & gratitude Nurture people around you to be caring.

Curiosity Growth in life. If you are always curious, you will study more & you will grow. Always ask what you really want and how can you make this better.

4

Excitement & passion Act and live with passion. Commit to it even though you many not be meeting your expectation yet.

5

Determination Follow through. If you are determined rather than wanting to do something, you have more chance of succeeding.

6 7

Flexibility guarantees success.

Confidence Willing to put on edge. You have faith when there is confidence. Use this muscle often so it will get stronger. Choose confidence over fear.

8

Cheerful If you are happy, tell it to your face and show it! Cultivate this signal.

9 10

Feel physically healthy and vibrant to do all the things you want to do.

Sense of contribution Adding not only to your own life but to the lives of others. Because you are alive, other people’s lives are better off! Smile & appreciate others. Giving more to other people. These are the “seeds” to plant daily and watch your whole life grow with vitality. Every feeling, good or bad, are not based on actual reality of life but your own perception and interpretation – what else could this mean? If you are certain what something means then there is pain but if you ask what else could this mean life has no meaning except the meaning we give to it. Make a list of all the things that make you feel good and happy. Expand the list, expand your choices – the more items you have, the more choices you have in life! For the next 2 days deliberately carry this list and develop the habit.

Self Management & Emotional Self Control After knowing your emotions, learn to gain control of your emotions. Do not avoid or deny emotions. If you do nothing, the problem becomes worse. Maybe it will be too late to try and solve it. Break the cycle of negative emotions. You have the power. Take a break, listen to your self talk, develop your self awareness, understand your triggers & hot buttons, develop strategies to deal with situations that push your buttons, do something different. Have a network of support group - people who care about you, who listens and whom you can share feelings. Restrain negative reactions, think clearly and stay focused under pressure, maintain your stamina and performance in all situations, don’t let situation escalate when provoked or confronted, remain “cool under pressure”.

World Class Leadership Practices For Leaders Of Small And Medium Companies By Haji Mahyudin Haji Omar

A WORLD CLASS COMPANY: As early as the seventies, when I was on attachment at small and medium companies in Japan, large multinational corporations were already awarding their vendors “world class” company awards, based on their performance and services rendered to these companies. Some of the criteria used were: fulfilling the ‘Just in Time’ practices; zero rejects on all products supplied to the main company; and most important of all, the pricing factor. Some of these small and medium companies were able to offer reduced prices over the time. The ability to meet these criteria were very important to the parent company. Thus they were given “world class” status award. Through my observation, the leaders of those “world class” companies applied world class leadership practices often known as ‘A Proven Action-Oriented Leadership Model’. This model is based on three basic core values, namely: (i) trust, (ii) credibility, and (iii) accountability. A leader may be well-versed in leadership theory and leadership models; but in order to be an effective world class leader, whether in a large corporation or small and medium companies, what “is practiced” by these leaders matters. Basically I would like to put eight basic leadership practices which are vital to be an effective world class leader.

28

MALAYSIAN INTERIOR INDUSTRY PARTNERS

1

MODEL ADULT BEHAVIOR AND TRUSTWORTHINESS

The leaders demonstrate consistency in behavior and values; demonstrating considerations for the needs and feelings of others. Most of the time they communicate openly .and honestly with the employees, and thus develop cooperative relationships. They listen. They value differences, and most importantly, accept responsibility.

2

COMMUNICATE A VISION FOR THE FUTURE

Leaders will normally describe a picture of what the future for the organization or team could be. They communicate future directions in clear and simple terms. They help employees see how their roles contribute to the vision. They link business strategies and priorities to the vision. They communicate the vision with personal commitment.

3

SET HIGH PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The leaders demonstrate a commitment to achieving superior results. The leaders align objectives to business goals, challenge employees to stretch and communicate behavior expectations.

4

ALLOW EMPLOYEES TO ACT

The leaders give employees the skills and opportunities to perform their jobs in a way that provides them with a sense of ownership. They share business information and involve employees in decision-making. The leaders also delegate authority and responsibility. At times they empower employees.

5

COACH AND DEVELOP EMPLOYEES

The leaders expand knowledge and skills of employees by providing feedback and developmental opportunities. They hold the employees accountable, provide constructive feedback, and review performance regularly.

6

BUILD COMMITMENT

The leaders influence individuals or groups to work towards the achievement of goals. The leaders also provide personal recognition for the employees. They create a stimulating work environment to inspire employees to reach their potential. Above all, they build partnerships within as well as outside the function and organization.

7

RAISE EXPECTATIONS

The leaders initiate the needs for change. They challenge the status quo, processes and assumptions. The leaders constantly identify best practices by encouraging innovative thinking. Continuous improvement is monitored closely.

8

LEAD CHANGE

The leaders ensure that ideas and initiatives are translated into enduring and positive outcomes. They build agreement on the need for change. Employees are encouraged to champion for breakthrough ideas, and follow through on initiatives introduced. The leaders ensure sustainable energy and commitment from employees. In conclusion, application of the above practices will normally lead to a positive work environment; a high level of commitment among employees, and often indicated by low turnover of the staff. Respect for the leaders, strong team work amongst the employees are often indicators of a leader who practices world class leadership principles. According to Dr. George Kohlrieser, Professor of Leadership and Organisational Behavior at the Institute for Management Development, Switzerland: …” a good leader is able to create vision, develop strategies and plans, and can influence people to participate and deliver the vision and while working as a team.” Ronald Cartney in his book “ High Impact Leadership” stressed that “…the ultimate success of any organisation lies in the performance and output.

Expressions Through Carpet Design Carpet design has evolved through the years creating expressive designs making it the perfect way to personalise a room.

A

rtesia Décor’s Steven Poh believes that carpet design has definitely progressed through the years, creating colours, shapes and patterns that you never thought possible before. It is a whole new world of carpet design and I’m glad to be a part of the revolution,” says carpet specialist Steven Poh of Artesia Decor.

Carpeting Done Right Carpets can give a whole new look and feel to a room. Gone are the days when carpeting was about picking your favourite solid colour for the entirety of a room. In today’s world of constant stimulation, carpeting has evolved to include what is known as carpet designing – an array of new design possibilities – more texture, some pattern, and even flecks of colour adding interest to basic backgrounds. A major shift in new carpet patterns include layered colour and soft texture in carpet. These combinations are not only aesthetically pleasing but is popular because it minimises soil and vacuum marks. However, the main advantage

34

MALAYSIAN INTERIOR INDUSTRY PARTNERS

of carpet design is that colour and texture offer more distinctive styling and fashion appeal. Artesia Décor, the pioneers in carpet design in Malaysia are ever-ready to be of assistance. Poh explains that carpet designing is an art and takes a keen eye. Their clients include big brands in hotel and commercial buildings. “Picking colours and styles that are eye-pleasing is essential to any room and can make or break an interior design.” He explains that the team works closely with interior designers to come up with the perfect carpeting and wall fabrics for a dedicated space. “This involves various designs of leaves, trellises, or flowers, for example – offer organic shapes that coordinate easily with other patterns in a room,” he explains. He adds, “Strong colours that come from commercial pallets are now available in multi-coloured loops, cut loop surfaces, and Berber styles as accents creating a whole new world of carpeting possibilities.” More recently, as evident in recent projects that have been undertaken by Artesia Décor, designing also includes design with

alphabets to further enhance the expressive design element. Artesia Décor is keeping up with the times by providing carpet designing services that meets today’s demands. “It’s an exciting industry and I’m glad to be in the middle of it all,” concludes Poh. So it’s no surprise that he shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Melamine Panels Like No Other Established in 2006, Green Panel Products (M) Sdn Bhd is proudly one of the leading melamine panel producers in Malaysia.

O

ffering a wide range of Melamine designs and colours that can be laminated on Plain Particle Board and Plain MDF Board their products are marketed under the name, Green Decor. The boards are widely used for interior design decorative application for home, kitchen as well as office furniture. The panels are available on 4’ x 8’ & 6’ x 8’ sizes with thickness ranging from 2.5mm to 25mm. However, Green Panel Products will be launching their new product known as Melamine Laminated Plywood which is still under the research and development process. It is expected to be in production by the end of 2017. Currently, Green Panel Products has seven production lines with a staggering output of 5,000 cubic meter per month. They even supply FSC and PEFC certified boards.

A Focus On The Local And Export Market Although sales is more focused on the domestic market which comprises 80% of their overall sales, the other 20% is for the export market. Their melamine panels are exported mainly to South East Asia, ASEAN countries, Mauritius and South Africa. Besides Melamine Panels, Green Panel

Products has ventured into cut size, boring and edging service. This allows them a chance to provide additional services and value-added products to their end buyer. Managing Director of Green Panel Products, Mr Ramachandran is no stranger to rainy days in his career. Having started out as an office boy, he worked very hard to get to where he is today. “As a managing director I’ve come across many ups and downs throughout my career. In the beginning, the most challenging part of this business was competing with the big panel manufacturers,” says Mr. Ramachandran. He explains further, “As the independent melamine panel producer, we had to depend on others for our raw materials such as Plain Particle Boards and Plain MDF Boards from panel manufacturers but our achievement and success is based on the true support given by our suppliers.” Mr. Ramachandran also believes the government can play an important role for industry players by strengthening rules and regulations. “A stringent law should be set up to make sure the all the raw material used in furniture manufacturing are certified and legally harvested. Also, more subsidies in the form of tax relief as well as research and development, should

Managing Director of Green Panel Products, Mr Ramachandran.

be given to manufacturers to promote green products.” He believes this will lower production costs which will allow manufacturers to offer better prices to the end user. There is no doubt that by passing on the incentive in the form of low costs, will make consumers happy to use green products. Furthermore, this will continue to support the effort made by the government to promote the use of eco-friendly raw materials. Mr. Ramachandran concludes, “Basically, it was a challenge getting to where I am today, as the competition was very high. However, as an independent melamine panel producer, I owe our success to my distributors and some end customers who have really supported me a lot through thick and thin.”
