President’s Message Dear esteemed MRCA members,
Datuk Seri Garry KS Chua, President, 2016-Present, Malaysia Retail Chain Association
As we work towards an invigorating year ahead, we can expect the country’s GDP to grow at a more moderate but healthy pace of 5.2% this year. Growth will likely be supported by a resilient domestic demand and an improved consumer sentiment amid a lower inflation. Retail Group Malaysia has said retail sales are likely to grow by 6% in 2018. But such forecast is highly dependent on a stable ringgit and tourist arrivals. As retailers, we need to anticipate the needs of the consumers and continue our strong efforts to innovate. I hope to see positivity among our members despite the moderate economic times. The association continues to hold relevant events to encourage strong networking between domestic and international partners. MRCA is proud to have a growing membership – now with more than 450 members. I am looking forward to more companies joining us this year. It is also my pleasure to see a highly successful MIRF 2018 exhibition and MRCA Retail Conference. This year, MRCA and the organising team will be upping their efforts to hold an even better exhibition at KLCC. MRCA is sending a delegation to the Taipei Franchise Expo in March to encourage more international participation for MIRF 2018. MRCA will be organising numerous charity events to raise funds for the less fortunate. We see it as our corporate social responsibility to spread some cheer during the festive seasons. This year, we will continue our tradition in hosting the CNY Banquet to show our appreciation towards fellow members and supporters. It will be held on February 27 at Wisma Huazong in Seri Kembangan. We are expecting more than 1,200 people and I hope to see you there. The much awaited Installation Night will be held on April 26. As for the upcoming AGM, I encourage everyone to take part and let your suggestions be heard. It will be on March 28 at Mah Sing’s headquarters. On behalf of MRCA members we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the late Ricky Thye, our council member since 2012, who passed away recently. His contribution to the association was invaluable. I would humbly like to thank all the well-wishers after being conferred the Datuk Seri title from the Yang di-Pertuan Agung in conjunction with Federal Territories Day. Lastly, I would like to wish all our readers, a prosperous Chinese New Year.

Flexible and cost effective insurance tailor made for retail chain owners in Malaysia.
hen a business owner is preparing to open a retail outlet, most are concerned about getting foot traffic, and moving products and services as well as achieving revenue targets rather than buying a business insurance that meets their needs. However, having adequate protection against suits, accidents, theft and natural disasters is essential. Retail business owners cannot afford to pick an inadequate insurance coverage that, at the end of the day, hurts your bottomline. Business can be disrupted by everything from fires and floods to lost Internet connections and broken delivery vehicles. Owners may be held responsible for repairing structural damage, as well as replacing lost merchandise.
W
Malaysia Retailer met with Horst Habbig, Chief Sales Officer of Allianz General Insurance Company (Malaysia) Berhad, where he shared important views on getting the right insurance coverage. Why should retailers bother about insurance? Insurance helps to protect your business. If you want to have a sustainable business model, insurance has to be a part of it in order to protect your assets, stock, employees and profits. Why pay for insurance when I choose to take the risk myself? You may be surprised with the specially tailored product for MRCA. The costs for insurance per location becomes very small compared to the risk.
Malaysia Retailer Vol 6 No 1
How different is this product compared to traditional business insurance? Smart Retail Solution is a 12-in-1 comprehensive package which provides the most competitive premium in the market, offering two options on flexi and combined single limit package with additional features of emergency relief benefits, No Claims Discount and renewal bonus, free coverage on contractor all risk insurance for renovation works or fittings out works at any new or existing outlet, first loss without average clause and nil excess for miscellaneous classes. At the same time, this policy helps to ease the administrative works and burden on the insured for easy monitoring.
Why should retailers choose Allianz? Because Allianz General Insurance Company (Malaysia) Berhad is the only company that provides this tailored product to MRCA members. Furthermore, Allianz is the leader in the General Insurance market in Malaysia and prides itself to always strive to provide excellent customer service, especially our Claims Services which are fast and efficient. My bank insures me because I have a loan with them, what can I do? According to Bank Negara every insurance customer can choose their insurer freely. No bank is allowed to force the client to insure over them. Please talk to us, so we can advise you how to go about it.
12-IN-1 INSURANCE PACKAGE THAT’S JUST RIGHT FOR YOUR BUSINESS
7 How much can retailers save? The Fire Insurance Market in Malaysia was detariffed on July 1 last year. Insurance companies are allowed to provide up to 30% reduced premium for Commercial Fire insurance. The actual amount depends on the nature of your business. Please contact us for a quotation. How many MRCA members have signed on? Since the launch of the product, around 50 member companies have signed up. Who are Solution Risk Consultants? It is an insurance consulting company which has been established since 1988. They represent several reputable insurance companies, both local and foreign, mainly servicing corporate sectors from SME to SMI, public listed companies and MNCs. They also specialise in customising insurance for particular sectors. Where can retailers get more information? Please contact Ms Goh at 013-367 2790 and Ms Yap at our general line 032148 3811 or drop an email to goh.kk@ solutionrisk.com or src@solutionrisk. com. Visit solutionrisk.com for details. hemed ‘Silver Jubilee & Beyond’, this prestigious event commemorated the association’s milestone achievements and successes over the past 25 years. The event was an evening of glamour and elegance, with activities to celebrate, entertain and inspire. About 1,000 guests comprising entrepreneurs, CEOs and corporate senior management helped the association celebrate in style. Special guests were Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Dato’ Seri Hamzah Zainudin and the Transport Minister’s special adviser Tan Sri Dr M. Kayveas. Meanwhile, attendees were serenaded by Tony Eusoff and Theresa Goh while tucking into a scrumptious dinner. MRCA has grown from a humble association led by visionary retail leaders to become a major and influential force in the retail industry. Currently led by Datuk Seri Garry Chua, the President of MRCA, the association provides a platform for members to share their knowledge and experiences, thus supporting one another and the growth of the industry. “MRCA is recognised as one of the most dynamic associations, actively promoting and representing the retail and franchise fraternities. “The association has formed local affiliations with many important associations and collaborate with the Government to further benefit members, the public and the business sector,” said Datuk Seri Garry in his opening remarks.

Moving forward, he said the retail sector was expected to meet greater growth in view of the digital retail trend. “Today, 98% of business establishments are SMEs contributing to 36% of the country’s economy, while the retail sector alone accounts for 20%. “This will continue to grow if we include digital retail.” Chua also announced the soft launch of the MRCA “Who’s Who” Directory to promote awareness of its members’ brands and franchising plans. “This is to kickstart the fund for our future standalone building as envisioned by Dato’ Eddie Choon. “For the first time, the public will have access to MRCA’s full list of members’ backgrounds and success stories, and we’re hoping it to be launched soon,” he said. Chua added the association would continue to pave a clear road map for the next five to 10 years in order to ensure a greater foundation to represent and enrich its members. Today, MRCA has garnered over 430 members who have expanded locally and internationally and are competing with international brands. With the leading franchise and retail store operators covering more than 25,000 outlets throughout Malaysia, these members help provide over 100,000 job opportunities to Malaysians across the country. Co-Organising Chairperson, Dato’ Winnie Lim: “This year’s celebration is very significant and extraordinary as we are celebrating our Silver Jubilee… 25 years of history. This is indeed a great milestone for an association that started off with just 20 members in a tiny office with one full-time staff member. Through the years, the MRCA has proven itself time and time again by achieving significant milestones, such as increasing our membership to over 400 members under our current President Datuk Seri Garry. I would like to thank the Council for giving me this honour to be the Organising Chairperson for this event. The past few months have been a busy and challenging time for all of us and I thank our dedicated and committed team for working so hard, for staying focused to create a unique and memorable night for all. We did our best and paid careful attention to each and every detail for tonight’s event. And, we hope we have succeeded in doing just that. Last but not least, I would like to extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to our generous sponsors for their tremendous support.”

We are delighted to see all of you, who represent the best of the best in retail and franchise to celebrate MRCA’s milestone of 25 years, with our theme “Silver Jubilee & Beyond”, to mark our milestone of 25 years of success. To take it a step further, MRCA will be honouring 25 pioneer members who provided their unyielding support over the many years.”

Christmas Dinner To Be Remembered Over the course of 2017, MRCA has received numerous sponsorships by supportive member and non-member companies as well as depended on the hard work of hundreds of employees and volunteers to execute their plans. In an effort to recognise and honour that support and efforts, the Association with President Datuk Seri Garry Chua and his council members hosted a fun-filled evening on 14 December at Kingdom Palace Tropicana City Mall. Guests were feted with a sumptuous Chinese style dinner while being entertained by singer Eivy Kan and a special appearance by Dato’ Leonard Tan. MRCA Council Member and Executive Director of Bentley Music Sdn Bhd Ken Phua was the event coordinator. That night, he also sang and played the keyboard, entertaining guests with his musical talent. Datuk Seri Garry was present to give his speech where he expressed his sincere gratitude for their contributions throughout the year. The night did not end after dinner. Guests had the opportunity to let their hair down by playing a number of Christmas-themed games where they took home some interesting prizes. Those born in December were treated with a cake-cutting ceremony. The night continued on with a boisterous karaoke session.

Marrybrown Rakes In More Awards Malaysian fast food chain receives highest recognition from home state and second MATRADE Export Award. ith 36 years of franchise experience thus far, Marrybrown is no stranger to winning domestic and international franchise industry awards. However, one of its most recent recognition came from its home state of Johor. The world’s largest halal quick service restaurant (QSR) was presented with the Icon of Johor by Menteri Besar Dato’ Mohamed Khaled Nordin on 26 January in a star-studded affair at Holiday Villa, Johor Bahru. Representing the company was Managing Director Datin Nancy Liew. The state conferred the award to the company as a form of recognition for its efforts to improve and enhance the Malaysian and Johorean franchise industry while inspiring young entrepreneurs to garner success.

Meanwhile, Marrybrown also received recognition from MATRADE on 30 January, in conjunction with the agency’s Export Day 2018. Presented by International Trade and Industry Minister Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed, Marrybrown Chairman Dato’ Lawrence Liew was proud to receive the company’s second MATRADE Export Award. Under the Services category, Marrybrown was one of three to be awarded under the Large Company segment. The company has an established presence with outlets operating in Malaysia, China, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Africa, the Middle East and Myanmar. Founded in 1981, Marrybrown pioneered a number of firsts in the quick-serve industry. It was the
first major fast food chain that introduced menu items that are now staples on most fast food menu boards, including rice based products and satay burger. Today, Marrybrown offers a broad selection of innovative products. Chicken remains the core of the menu, including the signature Lucky Plate, Chicken Porridge, Nasi Marrybrown the 100% Black Pepper Chicken-A-Licious. And, because value is important to fast-food customers, the company also offers value-priced products on “All-Time snacks,” including muffins and burgers. It is certainly living it up to the company vision: “To be a national restaurant company of most admired brand – through the power of our people and our culture.”

opportunities via MIRF 2018. In line with MRCA’s direction for cross-border retail expansion plan, MIRF sets Malaysia as the ideal international retail and franchise hub to seek potential investors and partners. This year, MRCA selected the theme “Platform for Growth” to emphasise the fact that MIRF is a growth platform for the retail and franchise businesses. This expansion is not merely constricted to the revenue of these businesses but also to include shaping and cultivating new business model along with innovative strategies. Organising Chairman Raymond Woo said, “MIRF 2018 is slated to attract over 10 countries worldwide to participate in the exhibition – presenting a variety of business opportunities for Malaysians to explore. This makes it an essential event for retailers and consumers as they would be able to interact, transact and form new collaborations as well as cross-border partnerships. “We are confident that this year’s MIRF will be far more successful as many have seen how our previous MIRF exhibitions have effectively opened up new business opportunities to the public.” MIRF also intends to take retail development beyond sales alone and in this respect, it will provide an opportunity to explore new business models and innovative retail strategies for businesses to keep up with the digital economy, Raymond Woo said. MIRF 2017 successfully transacted over RM65 million in business revenue with a record of more than 21,000 visitors. MRCA is positive that this year’s exhibition, will be able to record a 15% increase in these figures. MRCA President Datuk Seri Garry Chua reiterated, “We are pleased to present the MIRF Exhibition for the third year in running. Through the MIRF 2018,

MRCA hopes to help promote Malaysia’s economic development and create more fruitful entrepreneurial opportunities for local businesses.” Earlier, MRCA signed an MoU with PIKOM, one of the supporting partners of MIRF 2018. The agreement was signed by Mr Raymond Woo and Mr Chin Chee Seong, the immediate Past President of PIKOM. Mr Chin said its partnership with MRCA is aimed at helping retailers adapt to the digital economy. To keep pace with the fast paced technological world, retailers need to innovate to adapt their business to the changing demands of the customers. Dato’ Liew Bin, advisor to MIRF 2018, stated that there is still a lot of room for growth in the retail business. MRCA Deputy President, Ms Valerie Choo said that the public can benefit
from the exhibition in terms of ideas for successful retail business models. “If you are looking for successful retail business models, this is the exhibition to go to,” she stated. MIRF 2018 is endorsed by Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) and Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE). Meanwhile, supporting partners include Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau, Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Secretariat for the Advancement of Malaysia Entrepreneurs, Commerce Development Research Institute, Hong Kong Trade Development Council, The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCIM), The National ICT Association of Malaysia (PIKOM), and Asiawide Franchise.

This is due to M Vertica’s strategic location in the city which is ideal for owner-occupier and investors who are looking to rent. Helmed by the Lim brothers, Senheng has gained its reputation and credibility that has made it the number one in the industry.
Senheng’s Seamless Business Direction In 2018, the company plans to integrate offline and online shopping for the perfect customer experience. enheng recently unveiled its new business direction for 2018, which is known as Seamless 2. It will offer an integration of in-store shopping with online shopping for the ultimate customer experience. The Seamless concept is a crosschannel business model that the company uses to increase customer experience, with the objective of offering customers better information, more convenience, added value by aligning in-store, online and mobile shopping activities with customers’ consumer buying preferences. For example, in a typical seamlesschannel approach, the mobile app matches the look-and-feel of the website, which also reflects the lookand-feel of the bricks-and-mortar store. The logic behind Seamless is to create a consistent and convenient brand experience to achieve a better top of mind awareness from customers and greater loyalty because they would perceive the retailer as one brand that understands and appreciates them. The key elements that support the
S

running of a Seamless model require integration across all business functions namely product, pricing, inventory, logistic, payment mode, repair & service, loyalty program, promotion and sales partner benefits. The O2O here takes the form of diversion of traffic from the online experience to the offline experience and vice versa, to achieve an integrated shopping experience for the customer. For example, the customer may download or purchase a voucher through Senheng’s online channel to be redeemed at its physical stores. In another example a customer who visits Senheng’s physical store but needs time to decide on a product can be given an e-voucher to entice them to purchase the product online. Instant response was launched where customer’s enquiry received through Senheng’s mobile application will be channelled to the nearest branch. This facilitates a speedy and efficient response from the sales team who are equipped with the product and service knowledge. Senheng was first established
in 1989 in Pandan Jaya, from a tiny consumer electronics half shop lot set up with stock worth less than RM30,000 to the largest electronics chain store today with branches across Malaysia. Helmed by the Lim brothers, K.H., K.C. and K.Y., Senheng has gained its reputation and credibility that has made it the number one in the industry through progressive, forward looking, and innovative strategies. Senheng now has 121 outlets, including Senheng and senQ. All Senheng sales staff have undergone stringent training programmes to enhance service professionalism as well as product knowledge. The company offers a variety of electronic appliances from home to kitchen, from computer to smartphones, acting as a one-stop consumer electronic centre for its customers. Senheng PlusOne Loyalty Program provides a series of benefits to its 2.2mil members. Some of these include FREE extra 1 year warranty, 1-to-1 Product Replacement Warranty and many more. Flexi-payment options are available through it multiple payment methods. The stores also provide after sales service and repairs as well as free delivery. Senheng believes in giving back to the society, through its participation in programmes by the WWF-Malaysia and sponsoring badminton activities through Malaysia’s premier professional badminton league, Purple League.

Sunway Malls Going Strong Amidst Challenges The brand has collected multiple awards in 2017 and has more plans in the pipeline. ast year has been both an interesting and challenging one for the retail industry. New malls continue to open amidst a more cautious consumer sentiment and the advancement of online shopping. The brand currently has five successful malls under its belt; Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Velocity Mall, Sunway Putra Mall, Sunway Carnival Mall and Sunway Giza Mall. Earlier in 2017, Sunway Pyramid held a grand celebration to celebrate its 20th anniversary, and the mall later received The Edge Malaysia Property Development Excellence Award. It is through the experiences of operating Sunway Pyramid that Sunway Malls is no stranger to economic turmoil. “During the 1990s, there was a wave of emergence for malls with mixed-integrated developments and Sunway Pyramid is amongst those who opened when the country was hit with the Asian financial crisis. Through the uncertainties, we persevered and the mall was recognised as an iconic landmark of Subang Jaya and Selangor,” said Kevin Tan, COO of Sunway Malls. The group also celebrated the first anniversary of Sunway Velocity Mall – one million square feet of space with an investment cost of RM1.2 billion. “Sunway Velocity Mall opened in 2016 with 75% occupancy and the mall has grown it to 98% today despite soft market conditions. Furthermore, the traffic on per square foot basis matches Sunway Pyramid. “Sunway Velocity Mall also won an award for Social Media Excellence by

Malaysia Social Media Week Awards last year. And we are of course extremely proud that Sunway Putra Mall won three major awards in 2017. One of it is the coveted FIABCI Property Malaysia award,” said Tan. Currently, Malaysia’s mall industry offers a real estate value exceeding RM100 billion. There were concerns on the oversupply of malls as well as the rise of online shopping but Sunway Malls believes it is all about planning ahead coupled with the right strategy. “For us, careful evaluation and research are carried out by Sunway Group as a whole to study an area before pursuing a mall business. With the strategic advantages derived from shared resources, network, size and human capital; Sunway Malls will be in a better and stronger position to manoeuvre
and navigate the ever-changing retail landscape. We believe this will place us in a firm footing in meeting the challenges of tomorrow. “Never had there been a time in Malaysian mall industry that we are looking at such intense competition. Not only from online shopping but from physical brick-and-mortars as well. The Retail Group Malaysia has again revised down retail forecast and the Consumer Sentiment Index has reported another drop. Although disconcerting to hear, we believe the long term prospect of the industry remains bright and resilient,” he said. “The growth of urbanisation, rising affluence and especially change in lifestyle will be key catalysts of the industry. Malls today and particularly, malls of the future, will increasingly gain traction as places of congregation and socialisation which goes beyond commerce in a relatively cash rich, time poor society. This ensures the continued relevancy and legacy of malls.” With a few Sunway Malls in the pipeline in Penang Paya Terubong, Ipoh Tambun, Sunway Iskandar Johor Baru and further expansion of Sunway Carnival and Sunway Pyramid; Sunway Malls is set to be Malaysia’s largest mall owner and operator.

Managing Shrinkage Effectively Many retailers just put up with losses, but they don’t have to. With the help of technology and a change in mindset, there are solutions to the shrinkage problem. etailers, big and small, face issues with inventory loss affecting revenues caused by shrinkage. Data indicated the average shrinkage in the retail industry is about 2% of sales, amounting to US$123 billion for global retailers in 2015 alone. The problem can be attributed to a host of factors, including employee theft, shoplifting, administrative errors, vendor fraud, damage in transit or in store, and cashier errors. Lack of inventory control also contributes to shrinkage. Counting, restocking and monitoring are also tasks that take up costly time and resources. Integrated technology solutions provider Strongpoint tells us the most stolen products are small premium price products such as condoms, batteries, make-up and tobacco. These are items that are easy to conceal and resell. To provide the customer with a pleasant shopping experience while deterring theft, many large hypermarkets in Europe have opted for a different approach to securing small premium price products. Among them is StrongPoint’s Vensafe, which is a Select & Collect solution for premium price products and tobacco. As discussed in previous issues, this solution minimises losses, achieves compliance with tobacco regulations and optimises inventory operations. It can also serve as an attraction to push these items to consumers, instead
R
Malaysia Retailer Vol 6 No 1
of retailers locking these things up behind a glass case. “Premium price products and tobacco are stored in the secure Vensafe dispenser. This protects profits by preventing all losses due to shoplifting or employee theft. Tobacco products can be displayed according to sales and advertising regulations in various countries. With Vensafe, tobacco products can be sold through selfcheckout screens,” said StrongPoint Senior Vice-President and Managing Director APAC Roine Gabrielsson. Popular in other countries is a form of self-collection approach, especially for e-commerce retailers. For example, StrongPoint’s Click & Collect is a pick-up station for those who opt to get their purchase on the way home. “Customers can shop online and pick up the groceries without having to enter the store or keep to the store’s opening hours. This gives them the convenience of online shopping without the costs and inconveniences related to home deliveries. With the items accounted for, it can help minimise shrinkage.” Pick-up stations are designed with three temperature zones: ambient, chilled and frozen. Customers get a code by SMS that they input on a touch screen for the locker doors to open. Retailers can monitor the entire process and the status of each locker through a software that is easily integrated with existing in-store systems. Another solution that can be
adopted by retailers to prevent shrinkage is an improved cash management system. Right now in Malaysia, retailers are still using the same checkout process adopted decades ago. It is unreliable, timeconsuming and prone to theft. Seeing that cash is still king here, retailers need to take a different approach to cash handling. For example, StrongPoint’s Cash Management solution CashGuard automates, seals and secures the cash handling process at the point of sale and the back office. “There are 30,000 CashGuard systems installed around the world and some five million retailers use CashGuard systems daily. The system is well-known for its quality, reliability and security,” said Gabrielsson. What CashGuard gives is full control of the software to handle cash, saving time and money and frees up resources for smaller retailers. With its Retail Suite, the company’s technology solutions can be monitored and operated from one single point – a PC, a tablet, a mobile phone in-store or from a central office. The information flow from the stores to the central office will also be much easier and with a much better overview.
Retail has changed a lot since the 1950s. Why do you still struggle with shrinkage?
It’s time for Select & Collect StrongPoint offers a Select & Collect solution that eliminates shrinkage while maintaining an efficient and pleasant shopping experience. Theft-prone products are stored in the solution's dispenser. Customers select product tickets at touch screens around the store or at the checkout, pay for the items and then collect them at the dispenser on their way out. We think it's time for you to start enjoying the benefits of Select & Collect. Don't you?

It’s flagship store at Citta Mall.
Furnishing Malaysian Homes Hauslife brings the world’s top furniture manufacturer to the country in style. shley Furniture Industries is a name synonymous with functional design and high quality. This is the key to that led the furniture manufacturer to the top spot in the world. One of its most popular business segment is the Ashley HomeStore that first opened in 1997 in Anchorage, Alaska. Since then the retail chain has opened more than 700 Ashley HomeStores around the world. Meanwhile, the Ashley HomeStores concept was established in Malaysia in October 2014 via its exclusive licensee – Hauslife Furniture Sdn Bhd. Its flagship Ashley Furniture HomeStore was set up in May 2015 at Citta Mall, Ara Damansara in Petaling Jaya. Housed on level one with 10,000 sq ft of retail space, the store cleverly exhibits the latest products from several Ashley Furniture Lifestyles. Later, the company opened two Ashley HomeStores to cater to the evergrowing demand for its elegant products – one in Bangi and another in Penang. The Penang HomeStore will soon have a dedicated mattress section. As an authorised licensee in Malaysia, Hauslife is given access to Ashley Furniture’s entire catalogue, especially the latest releases. Shipped out of Vietnam, Malaysians can boast of owning furniture right off the design room. Ashley Furniture is in high demand thanks to a strong team of designers and researchers whose

work creates enviable lifestyle setups for customers around the world. Its strong support for Ashley Furniture HomeStore licensees ensures staff at every HomeStore is diligently trained to advise on trends, placement and design. If customers could not find the furniture they want in a particular HomeStore, arrangements can be made for the licensee to order from the online Ashley Hub. “Ashley Furniture catalogue has more than 10,000 items, which is impossible for us to ship every sample to Malaysia. Hence, before every release of new items, we are invited to Vietnam, China and even the US to view them. We then curate products that will suit Malaysian climate, trends and demands. “Instructions on arrangements, store setups and more come directly from the headquarters. Their designers are meticulous in every way, from the furniture frame designs, fabrics, accents to complementary occasional pieces,” said Hauslife CEO Yu Kong Cing.

The company also uses social media to its advantage. The team updates the latest products almost daily and attending to customer queries online. “Most our of customers have done their research before stepping in. They come with photos of specific products they like and concepts they want for their homes. So our staff have to be highly informed to be able to serve them better. “As for customers who are not familiar with the Ashley Furniture brand, we hope to introduce them to our philosophy when they come into the store. Staff have to be quick to understand the styles first-time customers like,” he added. In addition to the retail business, Hauslife is working closely with a number of property developers and hospitality clients to furnish their premises with Ashley furniture. “Ashley Furniture is not in the business of selling piecemeal furniture. We hope to bring a certain design sensibilities to any space – living room, bedroom, dining, office, hotel rooms. “Currently, we are in different discussion stages with different corporate clients. This is part of our company’s business diversification efforts,” said Yu. Hauslife is also looking into opening a few more Ashley Furniture HomeStore in a year or two to serve more Malaysians.

delivered his keynote speech on “Why Our Future is ABC (Analytics, Big Data and Cloud)”. Highlights for the event included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Fusionex and PIKOM to accelerate the rate of big data analytics adoption in Malaysia. The MoU will see both parties working together to provide training in BDA and encouraging the building of data skill sets within the workforce, which is a crucial step towards Malaysia becoming a BDA hub in the ASEAN region. Fusionex continues to do its part in this farsighted effort by contributing the services of its Fusionex BDA Academy, which include training courses in Data Analytics, Data Engineering, and Data Science.
MDEC – SPEARHEADING MALAYSIA INTO THE DIGITAL ECONOMY Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation Sdn Bhd (MDEC), is a holistic government-owned agency launched in 1996 to pioneer and drive the transformation of Malaysia’s digital economy. Its roots stemmed from Vision 2020, the main national strategy designed to develop Malaysia into a fully-developed nation by 2020. MDEC pursues a digital future that unlocks significant economic, environmental, and social values within the nation. Entrusted to oversee the development of the MSC Malaysia initiative, its efforts include nurturing the growth of local tech companies whilst attracting foreign direct investments (FDIs) and domestic direct investments (DDIs) from global multinational companies. The impact of this includes increasing Malaysia’s Gross National Index, bridging the income gap, and improving standards of living for all Malaysians.
HP RELEASES NEW POS SYSTEM HP is re-imagining the retail industry with the unveiling of its innovative and versatile all-in-one point-of-sale (POS) system, the HP ElitePOS. With e-commerce influencing consumers’ shopping experiences, brick and mortar retailers must ensure sales associates are data driven to better understand buying behaviour and deliver the best possible customer experience. “As retailers seek new ways to interact with customers and reinvent in-store experiences, technology must empower sales associates and engage customers in a way that feels like a natural extension of the brand,” said Kym Lim, Managing Director of HP Malaysia. The ElitePOS features a stunning, modular design, different from large, boxy POS terminals commonly used in retail environments. Its design is also functional, supporting use cases beyond checkout to make shopping faster and easier for both customers and the sales associates assisting them. These use cases include: interactive signage, employee
attendance, and self-service applications like a customer check-in and access to additional product offerings in the “endless aisle”. For businesses who want technology to complement their brand’s experience, the ElitePOS and its accessories add further customisation and flexibility. Attention to detail – including an optional receipt printer that integrates into the column stand, and an optional magnetic stripe reader built into the display, create a clean counter space for retail environments. Additionally, line-busting will be a breeze with Windows 10, DDR4 memory, and 7th generation Intel Core processors with vPro technology. The ElitePOS is available direct from HP and the company’s global network of more than 250,000 partners.

ARISSTO’S SHARED ECONOMY CONCEPT ENTERS COFFEE INDUSTRY Italians regard coffee as a national treasure, placing emphasis on taste above all. A cup of real Italian coffee offers a thin layer of foam, and demonstrates a distinctive three-tier ratio, creating multi-levels of tastes and feelings. Arissto, which hails from the iconic city of coffee, Sao Paulo, Italy, launches its first-of-its kind “shared coffee” programme (based on shared economy) to promote enjoyment of real Italian coffee. Within the next three years, it aims to install a million of its intelligent coffee machines, on a free of charge basis, in offices, commercial establishments, public and family-related areas and other places. Astrology & Feng Shui For The Year Of The Earth Dog 2018
RAT
The Rat needs to go with the flow rather than fight against the winds of misfortune and afflictions coming its way. You should carry the 5 Element Pagoda Keychain as a remedy. Appease the Three Killings with the 3 Celestial Guardians in the North.
OX
TIGER
The annual hostility star visits the Ox bringing them a nasty affliction that generates negative gossip and backstabbing at work. To remedy, place the Red Apple with Peace Symbol on your work desk. Display the 8 Hums Protection Wheel Mirror in the Northeast to enhance luck.
The vitality and strength of its inner essence brings the Tiger power to do well this year. You should carry the Dog with Safety Amulet Bag Charm to activate ally luck. Display the Earth Seal Jewel on your work desk or bedside table to strengthen Earth luck.
RABBIT
DRAGON
SNAKE
The Rabbit has every reason to smile in 2018 as the three important energies of its life are very strong this year. You should grab on to all the opportunities that comes your way. But carry the Anti Burglary Amulet and wear King Gesar’s Ring to enhance success luck.
Your energy is not as strong this year and being in direct clash with the Dog, it is important that you appease the Grand Duke Jupiter by having the Tai Sui Amulet with you at all times. Strengthen success potential with the Bejeweled Windhorse in the Southeast corner, of your home or office.
2018 benefits the Snake with the Seal from Heaven and the annual #8 star, which ensures the Snake will enjoy good relationships, careers and prosperous business luck. You should display the Bejeweled Wealth Granting Tree and carry the Treasure Chest Amulet with you to further enhance wealth luck.

HORSE
SHEEP
MONKEY
The Horse shakes off last year’s dependency on others and becomes more positive and passionate, achieving greatness in the year of the Dog. You must wear the Double Dorje Watch in order to control the Wu Duo Star. As you confront the annual Three Killings, you should place the 3 Celestial Guardians in the North.
2018 brings the Sheep heaven’s blessings in the form of the Heaven Star as well as the multiplying effects of the Yi Duo Star. This potent combination means the Sheep will benefit hugely all through the year. Activate the heaven star with the 3 Great Emperors on Horseback in the Southwest. Display a Rabbit Figurine in the East.
The Monkey will feel increasingly energized and empowered as the year progresses. The more effort you put into your career, the stronger your success potential will be. Enhance the luck of the Golden Deity with Kuan Yin sitting on a Snow Lion in the Southwest. Carry the Emperor Heaven Star Amulet with you.
ROOSTER
DOG
BOAR
The Rooster is on a roll this year, enjoying incredible success, luck and possessing strength, vigor and vitality. The annual #2 illness star needs to be subdued by placing Medicine Buddha in the West. Counter the Reducing Energy Star with the Tara Peacock Mirror on your desk with the mirror facing yourself.
The Dog can expect a series of good fortune coming its way even though its personal spirit essence and lung ta is low. Carry the Dog Charm Amulet to create multiple sources of good luck and carry the Victory Banner Amulet to jump start your career.
This is a year that benefits the Boar if it lets the Feng Shui winds blow and roll with them. Work on enhancing the good stars that visit by placing the 5 Element Banner of Victory in the Northwest. Carry the 10 Hums Dharmachakra Amulet to keep you safe from harm.
