Mpire Takes The Unchartered Road To Success The company is bringing in top Chinese brands of commercial vehicles to cater to the needs of the growing ecommerce and logistics industry in Malaysia. Photography Song @ Picture This ounded in 2002, the MPIRE Auto Group’s humble beginnings started from one small Hyundai Sales Dealer in Kampung Baru, KL. Today the business encompasses passenger cars, light commercial trucks and heavy commercial trucks. In the passenger car segment, MPIRE runs the country’s largest dealership group that controls 30% market share of Hyundai sales, Proton 3S in Batu Pahat as well as a Proton 4S in Teluk Panglima Garang, under construction, and expected to be ready in July. In the light commercial cars segment, MPIRE is the distributor of FOTON, exclusively selling FOTON panel vans and the 18-seater window vans. Furthermore, MPIRE also is the exclusive distributor of JAC selling light trucks in 1-tonne, 3-tonne and 5-tonne capacities. In the heavy commercial truck segment, MPIRE is the distributor of FotonDaimler, a JV company of China’s largest commercial car maker FOTON and Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes and the world’s largest truck manufacturer.

“I grew up in the world of automotive. My father is a used car dealer in Batu Pahat and I remember spending a lot of time in his used car showroom after school when I was young,” said Dato’ Billy Goh, Group Managing Director, who studied banking and finance in Monash University, Australia. With that kind of background, Dato Billy testifies that automobiles are in his DNA. He remembers returning from Australia after graduation on a Friday
and clocking in at the showroom on Monday. “After I graduated, my father moved his business to Kuala Lumpur and focused on imported and re-conditioned vehicles. It was during this time that he successfully secured a Hyundai sales dealership. I chose to manage the fledging dealership business as I believed that in here lies a better future than in dealing in imported and recondition vehicles,” he said.

“We ensure our products quality are on par with the market leaders while offering better and competitive prices for lower total costs of ownership and better ROI.” - Dato’ Billy Goh, Group Managing Director
BUSINESS ACUMEN Although Hyundai was getting some popularity then, it was not the top choice among car purchasers. Because it was still relatively new in the Malaysia market, questions on parts availability, used-car value and fuel consumption were recurrent issues. Despite this, his creative management style and a willingness to learn from others, helped him grow the company to be among the top Hyundai dealer in the country by 2015. “I was young and passionate. I went through the ups and downs of the business, the highs and the lows, but hard work and persistence helped pull

us through,” he said. However, 2015 – the year GST was introduced – proved to be watershed year for the company. “Even months before GST was introduced, our sales fell by 30% due to price uncertainty. Weak sales dragged on until after GST was introduced. We were suffering and had to make a decision to either down size or go down the path less travelled and expand the business in the brand. The opportunities and low entry costs during bad times were too hard to resist. I chose to up the ante,” said Dato’ Billy. Through acquisition of potential showrooms and markets, MPIRE grew from four showrooms in the Klang Valley and Johor to eight across the country. It is involved in all sales, service and spare parts operation in north, central and south of Peninsular Malaysia. “With the expansion, we have clinched more than 30% market share of Hyundai in the country. This meant that for every three Hyundais sold, one came from us.” After successfully establishing his
Hyundai dealership, Dato’ Billy made another bold move. In 2016, he eyed the Chery vehicles in Malaysia, a brand from China focusing on MPVs. “Despite not performing well I believed there was huge opportunity for the vehicles in the country. After some research, I learnt that the management was looking for a solution, and I approached them. After much negotiation, we decided to buy all their stock of 470 units in bulk at a lower price. With careful planning, right strategy and positioning, we managed to sell the entire fleet of 470 units in less than five months.”
FROM TOP DEALER TO EXCLUSIVE DISTRIBUTOR This success proved that the company was ready to make the move from dealer to distributor, and handle a brand entirely by itself. Dato’ Billy kept his eyes open for opportunities. The Chery project also strengthened his faith in brands from China. “With the growth of the Chinese economy in past decades, the country now produces high quality vehicles due to the demanding and growing local market.

Dato’ Billy with Deputy Minister of Transport YB Dato’ Kamarudin Jaafar.
“In the 80s and 90s, Japanese car brands dominated the Malaysia market. This was followed by Korean brands. I strongly believe that from now onwards Chinese car brands will emerge as an important player in the market similar to what is seen in the success of Chinese mobile phones and electrical goods. With our track record and clear vision, we successfully secured the FOTON distributorship in Malaysia for a range of products, including the panel, van, 18-seater window van and Pick Up. MPIRE also further secured the FOTON Daimler heavy commercial trucks distributorship. “After securing the distributorship for vans and heavy commercial trucks, we explored the light trucks segment and successfully secured the exclusive distributorship of JAC vehicles in Malaysia. “Malaysia is a matured market where automotive is concerned. Because of this we picked top brands from China. FOTON, for example is the largest commercial vehicle brand in China while
JAC is the number 1 light truck company in China and top light truck exporter,” he explained. This decision to secure the top products from FOTON and JAC also helped the company complete its portfolio in the commercial vehicles segment, namely from vans, to light and heavy trucks. In 2018, after witnessing the successful collaboration between Proton and Geely, MPIRE decided to enter the business by setting up a 3S showroom in Batu Pahat, Johor, and a 4S showroom in Teluk Panglima Garang, Selangor. “We strongly believe this synergy between China’s top passenger car brand and Proton will bring forth many new high quality products and models for Malaysians,” he said.
WHAT’S THE SECRET? Dato’ Billy said there are no real business secrets where automobiles are concerned. Hard work, strong market knowledge, an ability to anticipate
developments in the industry and to grab a good opportunity have contributed to MPIRE’s success. “Also see things from the customers’ perspective. For instance, a good market knowledge and knowing what customers need were key factors that contributed to our 30% market share for Hyundai, and helped us clear the 470 units of Chery in a short time. Buying in bulk has allowed customers to enjoy brand new cars and good service, while at the same time save more than RM30 million of consumer spending between 2016 and 2017.” A penetrative understanding of the market has also helped Dato’ Billy see the domestic need for quality commercial vehicles at lower prices. He said competition has pushed for the need for low investment costs in order to stay competitive in the market. “With Jack Ma’s investment in ecommerce sites like Lazada, with the presence of international logistics companies in Malaysia, the demand for commercial vehicles is set to increase.

“Together with the advancements made in Chinese commercial vehicles, we have set our direction starting with commercial cars. We only choose top Chinese brands because we need to provide the best quality. “The local market needs and competitive prices in vehicles will bring in higher returns on investment, but quality and after sales services cannot be compromised.” Meanwhile MPIRE’s creative
solutions has seen it investing in modern and exclusive 3S showrooms in important markets in Malaysia to build customer confidence. It has set up nationwide aftersales service dealers to support its customers with spare parts and after sales management.
MPIRE’S ROAD TO SUCCESS The drive to ensure excellent customer experience and after sale service has prompted MPIRE to put in place its

Dr Ong said that it is good for JAC to be represented in Malaysia as they are able to bring in world-class vehicles that will help the development of the Malaysian economy. “Collaboration like this is vital for Malaysia as it strengthens our ties with China, knowledge transfer and technology enhancement,” he said. Managing Director of Mpire Group, Dato’ Billy Goh said that JAC is poised to produce world-class vehicles relevant for the highly demanding consumers in Malaysia. “I am confident that both imported vehicles as well as locally assembled vehicles by JAC are of the highest standards of features, quality and fuel efficiencies that will be highly sought after by Malaysian buyers,” he said.

Both FOTON and JAC export to over one hundred countries, and dominate some of the countries market share too. Because the brands we chose have strong domestic sales in both China and abroad, we are able to offer attractive and competitive prices to the market,” he said. “In the light trucks market,
The introduction of JAC X30, N45 and N75 trucks to the Malaysian market is said to be timely as these vehicles are competitively priced and positioned in its specific market segments to promote efficiency, fuel saving, productivity, ROI, and excellent technology convergence. “JAC X30, N45 and N75 are our answer to this challenge. It is the complete solution that combines our latest technology to substantially bring down fuel consumption in long-haul operations with stylish appearance and this is without compromising drivability,” stated Lau Yit Mun, Group CEO of Mpire JAC. Mpire JAC is also appointing 15 authorized service dealers nationwide in order to provide efficient after sales service to all JAC customers. Mpire JAC is currently offering a trade in program by subsidising RM3,000 for any vehicle being traded in while buying a brand-new JAC (terms and condition apply). The package also comes with free 2 years’ service (6 times) and 5 years’ or 150,000KM warranty. JAC was founded in 1964 in Hefei,
where MPIRE holds the exclusive distributorship of JAC, we aim to penetrate 5% of the market that has 13,000 units size and is predominately controlled by Japanese brands such as Isuzu, Hino and Fuso. “This is a practical target and it can be done by our emphasis in creating value, competitiveness pricing and attention in after sales support. JAC has performed very well in many international markets such as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Colombia, and also ranks second in market share in the Philippines and Brazil.”

of new FOTON Daimler Prime movers to PKT that the availability of high quality FOTON Daimler trucks at competitive prices has enable the logistics company to remain competitive in the market while having a peace of mind on the maintenance and repairs of fleets. “Instead of buying rebuilt secondhand trucks, we can now purchase new trucks with four years unlimited warranty by just paying slightly more,” he said. There is growing demand in the market for FOTON panel vans as it allows the transporting of goods conveniently within cities and towns. It also is a 15% reduction in price
compared to its closest competitor. The light trucks segment is more competitively priced at around 12% to 15% lower compared to its competitors. “We are able to offer better value such as a longer warranty period, a comprehensive service package and keeping the maintenance cost low. With better value and top quality products, and by keeping prices low, we have successfully created a new market for Malaysians. “MPIRE will continue to bring in high value and quality commercial vehicles from China into Malaysia. As an active entrepreneur, I cannot afford to make mistakes as my reputation is at stake.”
Value creation is a strength of Dato’ Billy and the company. For FOTON Daimler, Malaysian consumers is now able to purchase high quality heavy trucks equipped with international wellknown specification at 35% cheaper than European trucks. was established in 1974 by the Group Executive Chairman Mr Chiang Sang Sem, who ventured the business of designing, and manufacturing leather goods in Singapore. During a stint at the handbag making factories in Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, Chiang stumbled upon his passion for crafting handbags due to his love for drawing and working with his hands. He worked his way up from various factories to finally owning one himself. Furthermore, Mr Chiang was deeply inspired by the 16th century sculptor, Giambologna during his trip to the Leather Trade Fair in Bologna, Italy, in 1974. As a result, he registered Bonia as a brand name in 1977. Since its inception, the BONIA brand has become synonymous with impeccable quality and Italian inspired

Dato’ Sri Syed Zainal said, “This new Primax 95 with Pro-Drive is responding to feedback from surveys we conducted that asked for smoother drive, responsive engine performance, and cleaner engine with better fuel efficiency.” The world’s first Dual Friction Modifier in the new fuel helps reduce friction by 20%, as compared to previous single friction modifier, thus allowing engines to run smoother and be more responsive. The Double Detergent has boosted fuel’s cleaning agent to eliminate up to 99% carbon deposits to ensure cleaner engine and better fuel efficiency. Additionally, the Anti-Corrosion chemistry gives engines 2X better protection for superior engine performance. The new fuel formulation has leveraged on PETRONAS’ world-class
research and development facilities in Europe and the USA that have been supporting the MercedesAMG PETRONAS F1 record its fifth consecutive World Constructors Championship in 2018. The engineers carried on to formulate fuel that meets current road engine technology and requirements, from indirect injection to direct injection and hybrid. Prior to the launch, two thirdparty agencies, Top Gear and Paultan.org, put this new fuel to a blind test with over 200 popular local and international-made vehicles. The results were very encouraging, with over 70% of the participants indicating that the new fuel performed better than their current fuel in terms of smoothness, responsiveness and efficiency.

of Leasing, Ikano Centres – Part of IKEA Southeast Asia, this dynamic mix is based on co-creation. “Co-creation is something that we strongly believe in. It is not only for external relationships but within the space as well. It allows each tenant to work together and create a cohesive experience for the customers while remaining diverse in shopping selections.” “These clusters differ from the conventional single-unit anchor tenant approach. convenience and personalised touch points for every shopper.
