ISABELLE FAUST
SEPTEMBER 2017
After winning the Paganini Competition in 1993, violinist Isabelle Faust quickly established herself as one of the most intelligent and thoughtful violinists of her generation. Faust's interpretations are always based on a thorough knowledge of the historical context of the works as well as attention to current scholarship. Her new harmonia mundi recording of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto is no exception. Joined by Pablo Heras-Casado and the Freiburger Barockorchester, Faust sheds new light on this iconic work. Also on harmonia mundi, baritone Matthias Goerne tackles Bach's two cantatas for bass and Graham Ross and the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge explore the Reformation's musical and cultural legacy. New releases from the Takács Quartet are always highly anticipated. The group's latest Hyperion album features chamber music of Dvorák. Also new on Hyperion, Angela Hewitt fans will welcome her second volume of Scarlatti sonatas, Steven Isserlis performs Haydn's two Cello Concertos, Steven Osborne plays Debussy piano music and Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien offer volume four of their Mozart Violin Sonata cycle. After a long hiatus, the Opera Rara label returns to the solo recital format with releases featuring soprano Joyce El-Khoury and tenor Michael Spyres. In jazz, Edition Records presents the début recording from Rob Luft, winner of the prestigious Kenny Wheeler Music Prize. Swedish singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Loney dear is a personal favorite of Peter Gabriel. His latest release on Real World Records will take his career to a new level. On World Village, French band Lo'Jo return with [Fonetiq Flowers], serving up their signature blend of gypsy, African and French folk.

Unheard provides a supplement to the incomplete history of the music of the Interwar period, and brings unjustly forgotten composers to life once again. The Ebony Quartet consists of musicians from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. For many years they have formed the string nucleus of the Ebony Band, while also performing regularly as a string quartet. They have devoted themselves to the rediscovery and rehabilitation of music from the Interwar period that was unknown, forgotten or considered lost. These world première recordings convey the force of artistic necessity and uncompromising, selfless idealism that made the music of this period so rich and engrossing.

After the mystical Hebrides Overture and the masterly 'Reformation' Symphony, Mendelssohn embarked on his second Violin Concerto. After a long gestation in which he polished the orchestration and meticulously revised the solo part, the work was finally premiered in Leipzig in 1845. From David to Joachim, several virtuosos honed the violin part with the composer over successive revivals, leaving behind traces of their playing style: fingerings, bowings, performance marks. This precious heritage has been scrutinized here for previously unexploited expressive resources. Isabelle Faust, accompanied by the Freiburger Barockorchester in top form under the direction of Pablo Heras-Casado, offers us a miracle of purity and lyricism in this freshly minted interpretation that fulfills Mendelssohn's promise of, "a concerto to make the angels rejoice in heaven."

In composing his cantatas for solo voice, Johann Sebastian Bach combined two elements that might seem irreconcilable: strict devotion within the framework of weekly Lutheran worship and vocal virtuosity. The result was a style in which the expression of the sacred word was raised to new levels of intensity. Baritone Matthias Goerne tackles these two famous cantatas for bass which showcase Bach's skillful highlighting of the voice.

In 1517, indignant at the mercenary abuses of the Church and convinced that a public debate was needed to restore faith in the founding texts of the Bible, Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the church in Wittenberg Castle. This marked the beginning of the Reformation, which was to spread all over Europe. Five hundred years later, Graham Ross and the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge give insight into the emotional and dramatic strength of its theological and cultural legacy in a program featuring Bach's two great Reformation cantatas and other chorale-based works from the German and English traditions down to the 20th century.

The characteristic single-movement symphonic poem evolved from the concert-overture. It was not attached to an opera or play, but was suggestive of a literary work, a myth, painting or location. The five romantic gems collected in this volume, led by three legendary conductors – Ernest Ansermet, Sir Thomas Beecham and Mark Ermler – use thematic transformation to parallel the poetic emotions.

Bruckner's Symphony No.3 is notorious as the most-revised of Bruckner's symphonies. There exist no fewer than six versions, with three of them – the 1873 original version, the 1877-78 version, and the composer's last thoughts of 1889 – being more widely performed today. The 1890 Rättig edition was used on this recording by conductor Hans Knappertsbusch, leading the Vienna Philharmonic.
