NEW RELEASE HIGHLIGHTS

Conductor Daniel Harding and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra are joined by acclaimed baritone Matthias Goerne on a two-CD collection of Wagner opera excerpts for harmonia mundi. The Wagner Project includes preludes and scenes from Tannhäuser, Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Parsifal, Tristan und Isolde and more. Mahler’s Symphony No.5 gained widespread attention thanks to Luchino Visconti's 1971 cinematic masterpiece Death in Venice. Echoing the work's 1904 premiere by the Gürzenich Orchestra of Cologne, the current members of the very same ensemble are led by FrançoisXavier Roth in an exciting new recording for harmonia mundi. 2017 marks the 450th anniversary of the birth of composer Claudio Monteverdi and the harmonia mundi label celebrates with important releases from Pablo Heras-Casado and Les Arts Florissants. Heras-Casado leads a performance of selections from the Selva morale e spirituale while Les Arts Florissants offer a DVD of the composer's first opera L'Orfeo and a specially-priced three-disc collection of his beloved Madrigals. Philippe Herreweghe is one of the founding fathers of original-instrument movement. This month's release of a new 30-disc, limited-edition collector’s item anthology explores the many riches of this great artist’s career. Erol Alkan has never played by dance music's rules. Since the halcyon days of Trash, his legendary London nightclub, Alkan has been a dance music artist with an alternative sensibility – a psychedelic approach and a punk outlook. Alkan's latest release, Reworks Vol.1, looks back on over the last decade and includes a selection of his most iconic remixes. Danish jazz ensemble Hess Is More has built a strong following for their unique instrumentation and unorthodox arrangements, combining elements of jazz, electronica, Scandinavian folk and classic pop. Their new album, 80 Years, features a wealth of stellar collaborators. Syrian traditional music artist Maya Youssef has been compared with such legendary virtuosos as Ravi Shankar, Yehudi Menuhin and Meredith Monk. Youssef’s album Syrian Dreams is a powerful expression of her deep sorrow over the recent tragic events in her homeland.

Erol Alkan Reworks Vol.1 2 CD CD19 • SRP $19.98 PHLP08CD

F4qr93oc(^$()(s

Erol Alkan is one of his generation's most iconic remixers. His philosophy towards a remix is to "re-produce" the work as if the original never existed. Reworks Vol.1 looks back on over a decade and includes his classic versions of Justice's "Waters Of Nazareth," Connan Mockasin's "Forever Dolphin Love" and Death From Above 1979's "Romantic Rights." Avoiding methods like the transplanting of a vocal on a contemporary dance beat, or adding a four-to-the-floor 808 kick drum underneath a rock band, Alkan instead takes a considered approach to build something new that offers a fresh and divergent take on the music in front of him. Erol Alkan is a dance music artist with an alternative sensibility, a psychedelic approach and a punk outlook. What makes him stand apart in dance music is what makes him one of the genre’s most enduring and influential artists.

Following on from his complete cycle of Monteverdi madrigals, Paul Agnew – here both conductor and stage director – presents his intimate and ‘sacred’ version of L'Orfeo – the composer’s first opera (and the first great opera in musical history). In a fine collective spirit, the singers and instrumentalists of Les Arts Florissants participate in the drama on equal terms, mingling in a single set that gives increased prominence to the masterful lighting and to the protagonists, who intensify the drama with their restrained movements and expressions.

F0yt0 wc!$(!@!s

Trio Isimsiz (Turkish for "no name"), one of the most exciting young piano trios on the classical music scene, make their recording début on Rubicon Classics. The piano trio repertoire contains so many masterpieces that choosing what to record posed a real challenge for the group. Brahms’s masterful final piano trio was one of the first pieces the trio learned together, and it represents the beginning of a journey for them as an ensemble. The group enjoys exploring new music, and found Takemitsu's Between Tides to be a revelation of unique sound and expression. Having worked their way through all of Beethoven's piano trios together, it seemed only fitting to include the composer who made the form his own, bringing a greater equality to the instruments than anyone before him.

Romain Leleu & Thierry Escaich Vocalises

CD CD21 • SRP $21.98 AP158

D14opw8c! $^@!s

The title Vocalises was chosen by trumpeter Romain Leleu and organist Thierry Escaich because the sound of the trumpet is often compared to the human voice. When putting together their album, Leleu and Escaich didn’t concern themselves with stylistic labels. Its fascinating tracklist places transcriptions of renowned classical arias alongside 20th-century hits, ranging from Rachmaninov to Michael Jackson to West Side Story. These arrangements and transcriptions – most of them original – have a contagious enthusiasm that definitely spices up the usually conservative trumpet & organ genre.
