Welcome to the first monthly new release catalogue that combines all titles offered by [PIAS] America. From exciting albums by ground-breaking rock and pop artists to jazz and classical releases featuring top performers from around the world, this is independent music at its best. The eclectic style of American indie rock and folk musician Karl Blau incorporates elements of country, R&B, grunge and worldbeat. Blau's latest, Out Her Space, is a gorgeous, languid and tuneful mix of soul, funk, jazz and Afro-pop. Recently signed to Heavenly Recordings, English indie artist Baxter Dury (son of Ian Dury) returns with his fifth album, Prince of Tears. Simon Raymonde, ex Cocteau Twin and co-founder of the superb Bella Union label, returns to the spotlight as part of Lost Horizons – a new collaboration with drummer Richie Thomas. Iconic composer, arranger and producer George Martin (of Beatles fame) is featured on an album of his film music that includes selections from Yellow Submarine, Live and Let Die and The Mission. Jazz releases for November include Lucky Peterson's colorful, bluesy tribute to his mentor, jazz legend Jimmy Smith, recorded for Jazz Village. Classical titles are headlined by the latest harmonia mundi release from maestro René Jacobs. Continuing his acclaimed Mozart series, Jacobs presents the world première recording of a new reconstruction of Mozart's unfinished Requiem. 2017 Gramophone Artist of the Year Vasily Petrenko is featured on a new Onyx recording of Stravinsky's iconic ballet The Rite of Spring. On SFS Media, The GRAMMY® Award-winning team of Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony present a live recording of the complete Schumann symphonies. The extraordinary French label Aparté offers a new recording of Jean-Philippe Rameau's opera-ballet Pygmalion performed by Christophe Rousset and his ensemble Les Talens Lyriques.

Currently celebrating 20 years piloting his revered record label Bella Union, Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins) has scaled another personal peak – a new collaboration with drummer Richie Thomas (Dif Juz). Performing as Lost Horizons, their stunning debut album, Ojalá, is a rare signing of two gifted musicians who have been largely absent from music-making for the last 20 years. Ojalá incorporates a heady cast of guest singers. Some are pulled straight from Raymonde’s Bella Union roster (Marissa Nadler, Tim Smith of Midlake, Cameron Neal of Horse Thief), and others are personal favorites (Karen Peris of The Innocence Mission, Sharon Van Etten, and Ghostpoet). Following his signing to Heavenly Recordings, Baxter Dury returns with his fifth album, Prince of Tears. Speaking on the inspirations for his new album, Dury explains, "You could get shot and split up with your girlfriend in the same week and you'd still think about your girlfriend. So that happened, but I used it. Last year was tough, so I just spent my time concentrating on this, nothing else." Brutally open, this is Baxter’s first album using a full band and orchestra to bring his slinking, netherworld soundscapes to life.

Originally released in Japan in 1997, Continental was a compilation album of previously released material and one-off recordings - such as Saint Etienne’s classic house take on Paul Gardiner & Gary Numan's "Stormtrooper in Drag." Saint Etienne's songs have been compiled in every shape and form since their inception in 1990, but this collection of rhythmic pop is one of the best by far.

Available for the first time in the US since 1998, Good Humor represented a major turning point for Saint Etienne. Recorded in Malmö, Sweden, they replaced their samplers and synths with guitars and horns. Produced by Tore Johansson (The Cardigans), their acoustic left turn only sharpened their slickness and pop instincts.

Originally released in 2002, Finisterre combines the influence of Saint Etienne's forays into more acoustic music (Good Humor) and trip hop (Sound of Water), but is not merely a collection of previous influences. The band pilfers from electro and hip hop with a brashness that could sink most pop groups, but Saint Etienne's effortless cool still manages to shine through.

On 2013’s eponymous debut album, Sumie tapped into the mid-point between Scandinavian and Japanese folk music to deliver an album of blissful restraint, its quietude shaped by a combination of parenthood and natural inclination. 1791 was a busy year for Mozart. Already working on Die Zauberflöte and under deadline to deliver La Clemenza di Tito, he received a commission for a requiem. However, Mozart's untimely death left his Requiem unfinished. The work was completed by Franz Xaver Süssmayr, a copyist and composer who was working with Mozart on his operas. Although commonly performed and recorded, Süssmayr's version has never been embraced by scholars. In 2016, René Jacobs championed a new version of the work as completed by young French composer Pierre-Henri Dutron. It was performed for audiences in a series of five concerts around Europe and met with widespread acclaim. The harmonia mundi label is proud to present its world première studio recording, featuring Maestro Jacobs leading the Freiburger Barockorchester. A special vinyl release of this recording will be available, recorded in pure analog.

Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques transport audiences to the stage of the Royal Academy of Music where Jean-Philippe Rameau's Pygmalion was first performed in 1748. This opera in the form of an acte de ballet was inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses. It tells the story of the sculptor Pygmalion, who falls in love with his own creation. He appeals to the gods to bring her to life, and when his wish is granted, the statue of the beautiful woman falls in love with her creator. Walton’s Symphony No.1 burst onto the scene in 1935 and was quickly recognized as a masterpiece. Violinist Rosanne Philippens is joined by pianist Julian Quentin and the Sinfonieorchester St. Gallen led by Otto Tausk in an all-Prokofiev program. Most of the pieces on this recording were written before Prokofiev became vexed by ideological discussions. With the exception of the solo sonata, they were all composed in the West. It was only after he settled in Moscow in 1936 that he experience the tragic fate of many great composers and writers under the Stalinist system, revered one day and maligned the next.

Composed during C.P.E. Bach's time at the court of Frederick the Great in Berlin, these sonatas provided the court's viola da gamba player with ample opportunities to display both virtuosity and sensitivity. The instrument was going out of fashion when these works were composed, but they represent some of the finest and most expressive music in the repertoire. German viola da gamba player Johanna Rose lives in Seville, Spain. She is a member of the group Accademia del Piacere and has played with numerous ensembles. Javier Núñez, a native of Seville, studied with Davitt Moroney and is professor of keyboard at the Conservatory in Majorca.

A virtuoso harpsichordist and organist, it is remarkable that J.S. Bach composed only one original work for keyboard and orchestra. The fifth Brandenburg Concerto created the blueprint for all piano concertos that followed. However, Bach the great arranger mined his other concertos to create seven more keyboard works. This program from Korean pianist Sonya Bach and the English Chamber Orchestra showcases not only Bach's ability as a player, but also the composer's genius as an arranger.

Carlo Graziani, born in the Italian city of Asti around 1710, was one of the earliest cello virtuosos. Well traveled, he played in London with the seven year old Mozart in 1764 and wrote sonatas and several concertos for his instrument. The Six Sonatas Op.3 were dedicated to Friedrich Wilhelm II, who must have been an exceptionally gifted pupil. Armoniosa deliver elegant and polished performances of these sonatas by one of the key figures in the cello's development.

Jacqueline Du Pré (1945-87) was one of the most celebrated cellists of the second half of the twentieth century. She performed and studied alongside such masters such as Yehudi Menuhin and Mstislav Rostropovich. Her performing career was cut short by multiple sclerosis at age 27, and she died tragically at age 42. She left behind benchmark interpretations of Beethoven and Brahms, but most celebrated was her reading of Elgar's Cello Concerto. The composer owes the popularity of his piece to her definitive 1963 Proms performance. This touching tribute from Praga features Elgar's masterpiece alongside concertos by Haydn and Delius.
