Editor’s Notes: IS SMALLER BETTER AT HHH EVENTS? “Any intelligent fool can make things bigger....... It takes a touch of genius - and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction.” ― E.F. Schumacher, internationally renown economist - 1911-1977

In what may be an emerging trend for some popular HHH events, registrations were cut off at 281 participants for New Zealand Nash this month. Indochina Mekong Hash limited registrants to a similar number in Hanoi last year. Both events had waiting lists for hashers who did not make the cut-off. On the other end of the spectrum, Pan Asia Hash expects some 5000 hashers on board for this megaevent scheduled for Pattaya this July. Welcome aboard as the February Digital of Harrier Magazine takes you on a grand hashing tour with stops in the Big Easy for Mardi Gras, Lisbon, and on a luxury liner headed for 8 European HHH hotspots.

NEWS FLASH Breaking News:

Mekong Indochina Hash 2013 Dates Change The Chinese government has decided to hold the China International Travel Mart (CITM) in Kunming on the same weekend as the Mekong Hash was planned. This was only announced recently. Expected attendence at the CITM event is approx 250,000+. As this will create huge logistical problems, such as lack of hotel rooms, over priced hotels rooms, no buses for rent, local scenic attractions closed to the public or overcrowded, and above all, increased security, the date for the ICMH 2013 WILL be changed. Therefore, please do not make travel and accommodation arrangements until a new date is confirmed, published and advised to you, by email, in the same manner as this one.

It is most likely to be the weekend after, namely Nov 1-3, but a local venue needs to be secured before confirming. In the unlikely event that this does not work for someone registered already, refunds would of course be available if absolutely required. Any inconvenience caused is regrettable, however, it is unavoidable, and better to make such a decision earlier, rather than later. Thanking you in advance for your understanding.

Lisbon

Portugal by KC “K2” Carlson

The Lisbon Hash House Harriers (LH3) was inaugurated on 4 June 1987. We are a family hash and have regular hashers from 7 months to 70 years of age. We welcome families and dogs. Our hashes usually attract from 30-70 people. Hashes typically last for 2-2.5 hours, including sufficient time to catch your breath, and participate in the regroup party (hash circle) where snacks, soft drinks, wine and beer are consumed. At the hash circle we recognize newcomers (virgins), punish those who have committed misdemeanors (with beer penalties) and sing (mostly off key) traditional hash songs. We also have social events such as BBQ’s, dinners and weekend away hashes to interesting places in Portugal.

The city of New Orleans, Louisiana is soon to be filled with party-seeking tourists. This February New Orleans is not only the home of this year’s American football championship game, Super Bowl XLVII, but also the week that follows is the world famous Mardi Gras celebration.

CONTENTS

In an effort to cut the history lesson short, the origins of Mardi Gras trace back to medieval Europe, and there’s some mention of “Boeuf Gras”, meaning fatted calf. Now we’ll jump across the pond to a French Canadian explorer “discovering” New Orleans, naming the city “Pointe du Mardi Gras” and establishing the “Fort Louis de la Louisiane,” now Mobile, Alabama. In light of their successes, this explorative party celebrates the first Mardi Gras.

HASH TRAVEL

by Jurgen R. Schreiter

Hash Travel was founded in 2006 by AB “Automatic Balls, the GM of the Frankfurt Vineyard Hash. Imagine a vacation where you travel to the middle of nowhere and you believe that you are the first westerner to ever explore this remote area of the world. Feeling very satisfied with your achievement, you will more than likely be disappointed. It never fails, as there probably has been a German Hasher there before you. If you are looking for adventure coupled with hashing, perhaps it is a good idea to join them in one of their hash tours. The next hash travel tour will be The European Bus Tour Extraordinaire. Hashers will spend 12 days aboard a fabulous luxury 6-Star VIP Double Decker Party Bus. Every day hashers will enjoy a

Heat & Humility

at the

Bangkok Marathon By Osama Rajkhan

If there was running to be found, you need not waste much time looking if you live in Bangkok! Bangkok is home to a number of running clubs and a myriad of sports events, from the various social Hash House Harriers and Harriettes chapters to the annual Amari Watergate Midnight Run and the big doozie, the Standard Chartered Bangkok Marathon that takes place every year in November. Perhaps the same is true of many countries in the region but after having lived in East-Asia for many years I feel that Thailand stands above the rest when it comes to leisure, fitness and public sports. It’s just how the people carry themselves here. The weather and humidity can be a concern if you are
