Editor’s Notes End of an Era After seventeen glorious years, Harrier Magazine bids a fond adieu to our many friends, contributors, readers and sponsors who have supported our efforts to provide a world HHH publication from 2002-2019. In this final edition Quick Drawers, our well traveled editor-at-large, takes us from the Grand Caymans to the tiny country of Andorra high in the Pyrenees, and on to Belgrade, Serbia. QD certainly gets around and has graciously shared his worldly adventures with our readers over the years. Bush Diver takes us to Bali, the Indonesian Island of the Gods and HHHiggins reflects on his quarter century of hashing around the globe. This edition salutes a true Hash Hero, Darwin Don, who was the world’s oldest hasher until his passing this year. Hash Boy has made us laugh with his hilarious hash adventures. Ajarn Keemao has mused of life, gin and other earthly pleasures. Special thanks go out to our designer, Jimmy Wilkins, who made the editorial content look sharp in the print and digital publications for the last ten years.

Grand Cayman

Hashing

by Quick Drawers

M

onday is a hashing night, on Grand Cayman. Hashers begin arriving in advance of the 6PM start, for this somewhat non-traditional hash, when compared to what most of today’s hashes have evolved into. Upon arrival at this Monday nights start; the Hare presented arriving hashers with several maps depicting recommended runner and walkers’ trails. There are no pre-set chalk, shredded paper or flour marks to follow; but the long-term resident Grand Cayman hashers have no problem selecting their choice of trail and heading out. Start equals finish for these hashes, normally from or near the hare’s place of residence.

ndonesia and Malaysia are very similar neighboring countries. Both countries speak dialects of the same language. People familiar with the hash know that Malaysia has the largest number of hash clubs per capita in the world and thousands of regular hashers so it should be no surprise that hashing is very popular in Indonesia as well. Whenever there is a major hashing event in Malaysia there will be many attendees from Indonesia and vice versa. Bali is the primary tourist destination for Indonesia partly because of its abundance of beautiful beaches, nice weather and its closeness to Australia.

HHH:

The end of an era?. . . by Higgins, on trail since 1991 photos by various contributors over the years

H

aving recently decided to clean up my bucket list over the next 5 years I looked at what I’d still like to achieve and reflected on 25+ years travelling the world with the Hash House Harriers.

CONTENTS

By now I have hashed across 90 countries and visited 300+ kennels. Having organised many events of various sizes including a handful of Bus Tours from HHHell (42 pax), two Belgian Nash Hash (100 pax), EuroHash 1997 (666 pax) and Brussels 2014 Beer Odyssey (2,525 pax) I guess this somewhat provides me with a unique perspective on the world of hashing and its evolution over the last three decades. Inclusion Back in 1991 when I started hashing rule #1 in many kennels was “no poofters”. Since my English was a bit basic then, I had to enquire about its meaning and received a Down Down for that. Back in the 2000’s I remember the reaction of a retired navy hasher who, when asked if he was joining us later, burst into an apoplectic bout that all male hashers joining a RDR were poofters. Also most hash songs had a strong patriarchal connotation, and one must wonders how harriettes put up with this. I guess it was attuned to the social fabric of those times, just as my engineering university was.

Eventually hashing evolved in the right direction and is now much more inclusive.

. . . Or the start of a new one? 42 Harrier

“Darwin Don” Grenville aka “Gypo” Vale DARWIN DON…“On On On..” March 19, 1923 —October 9, 2019 [Age 96]

T

he world’s oldest active Hashman Darwin Don [DONALD ERNEST GRENVILLE] finally ran out of puff and died in Sydney, Australia on October 9, 2019.

A Life Member of Sydney Hash House Harriers, Darwin Don was a Hashman since 1975. His crowning achievement was undoubtedly being named World President of all Hashdom at the 50th Anniversary of Sydney Hash in 2017. Although his decades-long allegedly unconsummated, platonic ‘marriage’ to Sydney Harriettes’ Captain Knockers was a huge highlight! A ‘living wake’ was held in Newcastle north of Sydney with him two weeks before his death with 130 of his admirers. He generously shouted the bar all night, listening to many anecdotes and memories. Darwin as always, spoke appreciatively and hilariously in response ... Here is how Sydney Hash’s Bigamist researched and remembered Darwin’s extraordinary life:

Andorra, Pyrenees Mountain Hashing

S

aturday October 12th, at approximately 5,000 feet in elevation was about the finest weather a hasher would want. Plentiful sunshine, a few white clouds in the clear blue shy and temps almost 70. Scenic Pyrenees mountain hillsides and valleys in every direction. What’s not to truly appreciate! The Andorra hash meets in the afternoon, between April and the end of December, at 2:45 PM for a 3 PM start. On this fine day, 20+ hashers turned out for the trails hared by Andorra Hash Master Colin and his wife Debbie. Three trails were available for the pack’s choosing = short, medium and long. All trails started out together on-up a noticeably inclined gravel road before branching off onto smaller narrow mountain hiking trails. Trails were well marked with chalk since there was no shortage of rocky areas near or on the grassy dirt trails. There was of course a continued gradual increase in the trail’s elevation, with expected up and downs. There were some steep declines by portions of the trail, should one not be paying any attention and somehow managed to wander over the side! I was advised that if a hiker did incur an injury requiring removal from a mountain trail by rescue personnel, that would be accomplished at no expense to the hiker (citizen or visitor). If the person injured themselves while bush-whacking off trail, then there would however be an expense. Now you know you can hash worry free on your hash visits to Andorra.
