Larger Than Life By Jeff Falk

he only thing better than a nature trail is an urban trail. The only thing better than graffiti is a mural. So what’s better than a mural trail? Nothing. Absolutely, positively nothing. But seriously, with all kidding and word play aside, Harrisburg’s mural trail is a really, really cool undertaking. Not only does it celebrate the city’s uniqueness, it enhances it at the same time. Harrisburg didn’t invent murals, but it may well have perfected it. “No two murals are alike, but you will see a common theme,” says Karen Hendricks, a spokesperson for the local non-profit Sprocket Mural Works. “There’s a mural for everyone out there. There are murals which depict flowers, nature and beauty and you’ll see some concrete things, and you’ll see a combination of the two. We have a lot of themes of diversity. We have a lot of themes of nature. We have murals that are interactive, where visitors can come and contribute brush strokes of their own. You do see some themes emerge in our mural trail.” The Harrisburg Mural Trail is a product of the efforts of Sprocket Mural Works, and specifically that of founders Megan Caruso and Jeff Copus. It’s a relatively new initiative on the city’s cultural landscape, dating back to its origin five short years ago. It’s a series of 40 murals, some as large as 60-feet-by-30 feet square, painted by a diverse group of local, regional and national artists, whose personal inspirations are the only true common theme. It’s billed as Harrisburg’s outdoor public art gallery, one that enhances the sides of city structures as big as billboards. “One piece of this is the time in which we are living,” says Hendricks, not referring to the COVID-19 pandemic specifically. “Murals have the power to teach people any time of the year. But we’re really encouraging people to get out and appreciate the murals now. Exercise is a great way for us to boost our spirits, while walking the Harrisburg Mural Trail, and it’s a great way to boost our spirits through art work. This might be a more opportune time than ever. 4 HARRISBURG MAGAZINE AUGUST 2020

“You can think of a mural as a large-scale painting in your living room,” added Hendricks, “and apply it to a city. Its paintings are living parts of a city. It can be uplifting during your everyday routines.” “The really cool thing about the mural trail is that it gets people up and moving, gets them into different neighborhoods and connecting with others,” says Jacintha Clark, a local artist who has designed two of the murals on the trail and been involved with the creation of others. “Having a trail, and going from one to the next can tell a story. We’re collaborating. The muralists come from all over. The trail is a connector. Generally, it’s very positive.” Because of their proximity to one another and their location downtown, the mural trail had kind of taken on a life of its own and evolved into a guided or self-guided tour. Although the murals can be found in various parts of the city, many of them are concentrated along Harrisburg’s historic Third Street corridor. Sprocket Mural Works has produced a free map of the murals to guide visitors to their exact locations and to provide a brief summary of their creations. “The vast majority are in the midtown and downtown capital district,” says Hendricks, who doubles as a mural trail tour guide. “Why Third Street? If you look at the history of any city, you’re going to see patterns and reasons why that city grew. Harrisburg was designed by the Susquehanna River and the railroad. That geography really defined Harrisburg. The major corridors are well-traveled, and that goes for visitors as well. Third Street is a natural corridor. “With the maps, visitors can explore the mural trail any day of the year,” Hendricks continues. “The tours I guide are about an hour long and we explore about 12-15 murals, and we try to change it up. We get into the stories behind the murals. Many of the artists come from highly-trained art backgrounds. Many of our artists have backgrounds in painting and fine art.” “For me, I think anything can become art,” says Clark. “I could choose

to walk in the snow and leave footprints in an artful way. It’s about inspiring others to have that passion and opening people’s minds to what art is. I think it’s very broad. The way someone moves can be art, the way someone talks can be art. I think everyone has art in them.” Many of the trail’s murals took shape and sprung from the semi-annual Harrisburg Mural Festival, the first one of which was conducted in August and September of 2017 and the last one of which was staged in the same months in 2019. Plans for the next mural festival in 2021 are well underway, but Sprocket Works has yet to firm up specific dates and details. “Everybody can feel something from murals,” says Hendricks. “With murals, you don’t have to walk inside a museum. Striking a chord inside of someone is art at its very core. The inspiration comes from a wide variety of sources. All of the ideas spring from the artists, it’s up to us at Sprocket to mold the ideas. “You can’t put your finger on one definition of what makes murals art,” Hendricks adds. “It really takes a wide variety of talents. You can see a wide range of styles on the mural trail.” “I do see murals being related to find art and street art,” says Clark, who has a background in fine art, theater and historic preservation. “It is its own thing. It takes a specific skill. I don’t think all artists can handle it the right way. It’s a public-space piece. I think it’s its own genre in that way.” Clark assisted Caruso with the initial offering on the mural trail ‘Believe in the Beauty of Your Dreams’ at 1725 North Third Street, in 2014. The creation was entered into a contest, and when it won, the prize money was used to fund more murals. “The founders of Sprocket Mural Works were both working in artsrelated fields in Harrisburg,” says Hendricks of Caruso and Copus. “They were both envisioning murals throughout Harrisburg. They were introduced by mutual friends and came to realize they had the same ideas. They put their minds together and created Sprocket Mural Works. The idea was to uplift Harrisburg through art. Harrisburg was already a great place to live, and murals were a way to make it even better. “One of the reasons Megan and Jeff were envisioning murals was 6 HARRISBURG MAGAZINE AUGUST 2020
SliceofLime
that Harrisburg had seen growth and redevelopment, but also decay and buildings being torn down,” says Hendricks. “The city is a living, breathing, changing thing. It all worked together. It provided space for the murals to go.” “If I have one common theme in my murals, it’s flowers,” says Clark. “When I think of murals, I don’t think of flowers. But they have become this inward language. I think they hold a lot of historical meaning as well. It’s an invaluable way to share color and form. I think they bring a lot joy and promise.” Hendricks says that the trail’s 40 murals cover about 25,000-square feet of wall space, and that six tons of special pigmented paint designed to last up to 30 years have been used for the entire project over the years. For some artists, the conceptualization of their work takes longer than the six or seven days it takes to paint the murals. “Some of the artists come from a graffiti background,” says Hendricks. “Graffiti art has a place in urban culture, but we don’t describe our murals as graffiti. Graffiti is a form of urban expression, but graffiti isn’t well-planned out. But a lot of graffiti artists are talented and a lot of mural artists come from a graffiti background. “Both are recognized as street artists,” Hendricks continued. “For some, graffiti is how they’re exposed to art, and then they take it a step farther. Graffiti can degrade a property’s value, but murals can enhance it. It’s a way to make people feel inspired. That’s the beauty of art.” “The first thing you’ve got to do is communicate with the community the mural is going to be painted in,” says Clark. “It’s a lot of research. It’s just talking. It’s sketching and revising and being considerate of what I’m painting. When your design is approved, it’s about putting them on walls. You work really fast and it’s something that’s a lot of fun. You work really long days, but each muralist has a different method. “For me, murals are an opportunity for people to connect with a space, and each other,” concluded Clark. “It can be an emblem that improves a space. It can help you see your environment differently. It’s also a nice maker of time. It’s a gesture of appreciation, and it’s for the public.” The murals are definitely larger than life. 7

hen the five members of Smooth Like Clyde captured “Best Cover Band” in January before a sold-out crowd at the Central Pennsylvania Music Awards, no one was more surprised than… Smooth Like Clyde. “Maybe Clyde isn’t smooth at all,” quips Kev Askins, who contributes bass, keys and vocals to this exuberant fivesome, whose collective star has been soaring, much to their surprise and sense of gratitude. Shedding their customary jeans, shorts and club duds for formal attire at Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts at the post-holiday awards ceremony, vocalist and rhythm guitarist Chris Guerrisi can be heard saying on the video, “Holy S$#%&*…we won!” “I was shocked and humbled,” he said later. “There were so many talented bands in the category of ‘Best Cover Band,’ any one of them deserved to win.” (Other nominees included The Luv Gods and The Famous.) “When they called our name, it was a complete surprise, and it took a few seconds to process. But that night will always be a great memory for me,” says Guerrisi, whose day job finds him snapping photographs of an A-list line-up of picture-perfect senators under the weighty, historic chandeliers, gilded gold, and exquisite marble at the massive state Capitol. He and his bandmates have also created special memories for so many other central Pennsylvanians. As a testament to the prolonged “moment” Smooth Like Clyde is having, the high-energy group keeps popping up in the hottest night spots, parties, weddings and stages throughout Maryland and Pennsylvania. Their trophy case also has gotten crowded with recent adds as “Readers’ Choice” award-winners for “Simply the Best Cover Band” from Harrisburg Magazine and a similar honor from Susquehanna Style. Smooth Like Clyde’s vast talent pool is rounded out by Tyrone (“Tye”) King on lead vocals, who also played with Collective and Trylogy in Baltimore; Kevin Brennen (“KB”) on lead guitar and vocals; and Ross Sackler on drums and vocals. Sackler says their CPMA award was greeted with “Complete shock. Chris and I were planning on taking a picture of the nomination screen and a video of the emcee so we could post that we were even nominated.” Winning was unexpected, and made victory even sweeter. 8 HARRISBURG MAGAZINE AUGUST 2020
Clyde’s Stride The question that seems to follow them as closely as their fans is: “Who the heck is Clyde?” “I have no idea, I wish someone would tell me!” jokes Brennen. “Smooth Like Clyde was mostly a random name,” Guerrisi explains. “When we were trying to come up with a name for the band, we had a sheet of paper that probably had 100 or more random ideas on it. In hindsight, I wish I still had that sheet of paper! But Smooth Like Clyde was one of my suggestions. A friend of my family is named Clyde, so I borrowed his name.” Sackler, a Systems Engineer for an IT service provider by day, offers his own take on their name. Clyde is “a state of mind. We all have a little bit of Clyde in us.” Clyde clearly gets people moving, laughing, and shedding the stresses of the day on the dance floor, from the first note to the last dance, so the Clyde vibe is apparently alive, well and wiggling in central Pennsylvania.
A Band is Born Smooth Like Clyde has gone through many permutations as these skilled musicians joined and left a series of popular bands on the East Coast, forming, dissolving, reconfiguring, and improving with each smooth move. Askins, Sackler and Guerrisi were original members of Smooth Like Clyde. Guerrisi was in a band called “Something Fluid,” and Sackler and Askins joined at the tail end of that band’s life cycle. After graduating college, Sackler had played in another original band called Sacred Hat. That evolved into 23 Skidoo, which gained great popularity in the region. When that band broke up, the guitar player and Sackler formed Cherry Twister, a power-pop trio with influences ranging from early Beatles and Beach Boys to Big Star and Teenage Fanclub. The band attracted a substantial national following as they performed at a variety of clubs, spanning New York City, Philly, Nashville, Memphis, LA and San Diego. Smooth Like Clyde was officially born in April of 2007. Two years into Smooth Like Clyde, original lead guitar player, Scott
“Back then the bands played the rock music and the DJ’s played the club music. We wanted to be the band that played the club music,”
Fairchild, decided to bow out to spend more time with his family and focus on his career. Partings are sweet sorrow, but they all knew KB from other bands in the area, and set their sights on enlisting his melodious craft. “He’s an incredibly talented musician and singer, so it was a nobrainer that we wanted him,” Guerrisi says. Fortunately, Brennen was available, and they were lucky enough to snag that coveted member. Brennen has also played with bands like Creamsicle, Tony Perry Project, and Empty Pockets. By day, KB holds an unlikely occupation, keying in on computer issues as a desktop support technician, and turning music into prayer as a worship leader at his church. Around the same time, they decided to replace their original lead singer, Shawn. Their sights landed on Tye King. Askins had played in previous bands with King, who was living in western Pennsylvania at the time. “As the saying goes, timing is everything,” says Guerrisi. King, the quiet one of the bunch, drove out to the ‘Burg and auditioned, and proved to be the perfect fit. He relocated to the capital city, and for the past 11 years, the Clyde five have been together, making beautiful music and memories together, for weddings, weekend date nights, girls’ nights out, charity fundraisers, corporate parties, and more.
Rising above the Crowds The Smooth Like Clyde secret to success is all about talent, friendship, energy, synergy, musicality, charisma, and an elusive X factor. “When we formed SLC, almost all the cover bands in Central Pennsylvania were playing the same 80’s, 90’s, modern rock songs,” Guerrisi explains. “Back then the bands played the rock music and the DJ’s played the club music. We wanted to be the band that played the club music,” he adds. He believes music selection, diversity and longevity set them apart from the others. “Today, there are more local cover bands playing some dance/party songs in their sets than in the old days of Smooth Like Clyde. But I still believe we play more than anyone else in the area. And we’re also very diverse. I’m surrounded by four guys who are incredibly talented and experienced. We can appeal to a very wide age range because we can cover so many different genres of music. “We can go from Usher, Pitbull and FloRida to Keith Urban and Chris Stapleton to Guns’n’Roses and Journey to Earth, Wind and Fire and Morris Day to Madonna and Montell Jordan,” Guerrisi says. “There’s something in there for everyone. I also believe our longevity is a strength. Not many cover bands make it 10-plus years with the same guys. We love each other like brothers, and we still have a ton of fun each and every show.” 10 HARRISBURG MAGAZINE AUGUST 2020
“Not to sound pompous but musicality for one,” sets us apart from other bands, Brennen adds. “None of us are young anymore and we've been doing this for many years. Some of us have degrees in music while others have just worked on their instrument(s) to be the best they can be. We are also versatile and can play many genres or requests off the cuff. We've also invested in sound and lighting for the band which (if we provide at a gig) bring another dimension as the lights are synced to our songs.” This in-synch family is suffering under this prolonged “stay at home” and “social distancing” directive. Being stuck at home in the COVID-19 pandemic, “I can’t tell you how much we miss being out there performing. We can’t wait until this passes so we can get back to doing what we love,” says Guerrisi. Locally, Guerrisi’s favorite place to play has to be Hollywood Casino and XL Live. “They’re two very different but amazing venues. Hollywood is great because it’s a beautiful venue, and we get huge crowds. It’s a very diverse mix of people coming in from all over Pennsylvania. We always see new faces at the casino each show, and we’ve played over 100 shows there! “XL Live is just a raw, in-your-face, rock’n’roll room! They have a huge stage, P.A. system and light show. It’s a venue custom-built for the sole purpose of live entertainment. Who wouldn’t love playing there?” Sackler also loves playing Club XL, along with the Works in Wyomissing, an all-ages arcade and fun zone. “Both venues have a vibe to it that you are playing much more than just a club. It’s an event from start to finish.” Brennen too sings the praises of Club XL “due to the size, stage, lights, crew, etc. They have a top-notch operation and great people. Hollywood Casino is also fun as we do really well there and usually have a huge crowd. It's cool and amazing to see some of the same faces we've been seeing for 10 years now.” Brennen says he also loves playing weddings. “(They’re) usually fun to do, fun people, nice settings, good food and good money.” Sackler says he also considered it a peak experience to perform at the raucous Party Block in Ocean City, Maryland, where the beach scene and summer heat take the mirth and merriment to a whole new level. Askins says his favorite place to play is anywhere where people dance and want to have fun. “Who doesn’t feed off of energy? We celebrated our 100th show at Hollywood Casino last year and are still excited to be a part of the Hollywood team.”
Laughter is the Best Music Part of Smooth Like Clyde’s magic is the laughter and unmitigated fun they have on stage, which has an effect on the crowd that seems far more contagious than the virus that has temporarily sidelined them. “Every time the five of us get together, we are usually laughing to the point of tears at some point in the night over something someone said or did,” Guerrisi says. “The most memorable shows are the ones where the whole crowd is dancing and singing along from the beginning to the end of the night. As a performer, there’s no better feeling than having a crowd completely engaged.” To prove his point, Sackler offers his take on his favorite song, “Don’t Stop Believing by Journey,” he quips. “Just kidding. Even Journey stopped believing.” Sackler recalls one of the funniest moments of their playing career: “Specifically, KB falling down a flight of stairs, riding his guitar case like boogie board.” Even when that laughter comes at their own expense, their smiles
can light up any darkened stage.
The Smooth Like Clyde Secrets While Smooth Like Clyde pours their hearts out there on stage, they have other secrets that keep them on top. Guerrisi says one of the biggest and littlestknown secrets of Smooth Like Clyde: “KB is an amazing oboe player. I’ve tried to egg him on several times to break out his oboe at a show. Maybe one of these days he’ll do it. “ Most of the guys in the band can play multiple instruments. Audience members have requested songs that the band has learned to play on the spot, by reading the lyrics from a cell phone. Their spontaneity and incredible knack for sounding out music are a rare and impressive find. Brennen says the audience often doesn’t realize that, “We use samples and tracks for most of our songs (just to cover keys and other things like horns, sound effects, etc as we don't have live players for them). There is a click track which is constant for Ross, and some of us have a little of that click as well so we are sure to lock in with time. Also, before each song starts in our ears we hear the song title and then a count in (Intro, 2, 3, 4). All the audience knows is we start together and stay together, but there's a lot of stuff going on in our ears!”
The Smooth Like Clyde Philosophy 101 Besides being extraordinary showmen and eclectic musicians, it is obvious that they all hit the right chords with another superlative: they are, clearly and simply, good guys. Guerrisi’s philosophy of life, like Tim McGraw’s, is: “Be kind and be humble.” That humility and kindness shows, on stage and in his day job. For Sackler, his approach to life is embodied in the song, “Let Love Rule” by Lenny Kravitz. For Brennen, KB’s favorite songs to perform change all the time, but “I still love ‘Rock With You’ by Michael Jackson. It just has a great groove, great harmonies, and I like the song structure. There's even a key change to keep things interesting.” And Brennen’s life mantra? “Treat others how you'd like to be treated 'cause karma is a #%$@! and God don't like ugly.” He is also known to sprinkle his speech with his favorite saying: “That's the way of the world.” Askins, who works full-time for a company called SP+ as the Senior Facility Manager, loves the song “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson, and takes that “It’s-on-you” message to heart. Whether they are sharing joy or a memorable song, Smooth Like Clyde lives out that Lenny Kravitz lyric: “Love transcends all space and time, and love can make a little child smile. Oh can’t you see, This won’t go wrong, But we got to be strong, We can’t do it alone.” Somehow, somewhere, Clyde is smiling. 7

A LEGACY OF MAGNIFICENT MID-STATE MUSIC An Interview With Dave Bupp, Lead Singer for the Mag Men Story and Photos By Dimitri John Diekewicz
T
he Whitaker Center heated up a chilly night in January when a celebrity list of regional musicians, studios, and industry figures converged at The Whitaker Center in Harrisburg as the Capitol city played host to the first annual Central Pennsylvania Music Award (CPMA) ceremony. The outside temperature was completely off set with the pervasive warm electric atmosphere inside among the assembled crowd of musicians, studio operators, music business owners, writers and representatives from popular live music venues. Professional practitioners in these fields were recognized for their achievements with nominations for awards in these respective categories. This was an inclusive process where both CPMA board members and music fans selected winners with votes for their personal favorite nominee. No matter who took home a trophy, everyone was a winner on this night. A special segment of the evening’s newly created annual award ceremony was the official launch of the CPM Hall of Fame which celebrates the careers and legacies of legendary mid-state music figures. Central Pennsylvania has a long rich history of producing hit performers who have made a presence on the national stage and now those names will be immortalized within this hall. The initial class of inductees include such luminaries as Poison, The Sharks, Dan Hartman, Robert White, Bobby Troup and The Magnificent Men. “The Mag Men,” as they are so often referred to, were the first to be formally inducted and this was a truly fitting selection. Band members, Dave Bupp, Buddy King, Jimmy Seville, Bob Angelucci, Terry Crousore, Tom Pane and Tommy Hoover were part of a seven man, blue-eyed soul sensation that made a huge impact on the 1960’s R&B scene that still resonates to this day. The songs they cut for Capitol Records were a new approach that paved the way for future acts like Hall & Oates, The Soul Survivors and Robert Palmer, to name a few. Selections like “Peace of Mind,” “Maybe Maybe Baby,” and their amazing spin on “Stormy Weather” made a strong impression with audiences and a lasting influence on popular music. In the wake of this momentous milestone moment with their induction to the Hall of Fame, I had the opportunity and true honor to speak with one of the founding members and lead singer for The Mag Men, Dave Bupp. During our two- and- a-half hour phone conversation many stories were shared. Here are the highlights. Question: Congratulations, how does it feel being part of the very first act to be inducted into the Hall of Fame? Dave: I’m really shocked and humbled. I mean there were so many great groups from this area like The Emperors and the fact that they chose us. It’s just incredible. Question: When you look back on your career what first comes to mind? Dave: How fast the time went by (laughs). Really, it seems like yesterday we were playing the Uptown Theater in Philly, for instance, 14 HARRISBURG MAGAZINE AUGUST 2020
and that was over 50 years ago! Question: Wow, what you can share about the experience? Dave: Well we had a #1 R&B hit in Philly at that time and it led to us being booked there. We were second from the last act on the bill between Billy Stewart and The Miracles with Smokey Robinson. We were the only white act on the bill. Question: How were you received by the audience and the other acts? Dave: Once we started, the audience loved us, and the acts treated us like we were their own. It was a great time. Question: Well let’s go back to the beginning. Where did you grow up and what were you listening to during those years? Dave: I’m from York and still make my home here. As far as who I listened to, like most kids, I was listening to the popular acts like Pat Boone, Teresa Brewer and so on and then I got turned onto Little Richard. When I heard him, that was it. I knew that I wanted to be a professional singer. I was already singing at that time; school recitals, etc. People would say, ‘You’ll never be a singer and sell records…well, I proved them wrong. Question: So this is the mid-late 1950’s and you’re in high school at this time? Dave: Yeah, just before. In high school I took a lot of music courses. Studied Folk Music, Barbershop Quartet singing, which was sort of being performed at the time with success by The Four Aces with Al Albert, The Four Lads, The Hill Toppers and so on. Of course I was really studying the black singers and trying to capture their technique. I really wanted to be black so I would have that soulfulness in my voice. Question: Like Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke? Dave: Absolutely. And there were the groups like The Dubs, I actually covered their song “Be Sure My Love.” Great stuff. Question: Speaking of groups, The Quintones were from York and didn’t they have a national hit? Dave: Yes, “Down the Aisle Of Love.” They were a big influence. They put York on the map and showed it could be done, though, we thought it (Rock n’ Roll) would be a short term. Remember, it was still not being embraced by more than half the population. Question: Now, your first group, The Del-Cords, were they formed when you were in high school? Dave: No, I graduated and basically took a break from music. I met my
future wife, got married and began working, loading trucks, etc. at a local dairy. About a year and a half out of school I ran into a guy I knew, Allen “Jap” Shue, at the old US 30 Dragstrip and he says, “Let’s put together a band.” So I hired guys to fill out the band. We were a mixed group, black and white. I was the only guy at the time to form a band in York. I was the booking agent, the manager, you name it. That was the beginning of The Del-Cords. Question: So were you guys an immediate hit in the area? Dave: Not quite. We were hired by a local DJ, Doc Dougherty, to play the Reliance Dance in York and we bombed (laughs). But with more time playing together we got tight. Question: At this time are you performing all around the region? Dave: No, just York. And I said we need to get out of York and play in Harrisburg. That’s the place. So we began playing in Harrisburg, Hershey, Mechanicsburg. We played at The Barn on Front Street. That was a popular place and some Battle of The Bands shows. In fact,t it was at a Battle of The Bands competition where I first met Bob Angelucci of The Endells. Question: So that’s where the two forces came together? Dave: Yeah, of course we knew of each other by playing out and about. Question: What kind of sound did The Del-Cords have? Dave: Well, the first year out of high school I was really into The Flamingos. They all sang, they played instruments if needed and they covered standards beautifully. Like “I Only Have Eyes For You.” Then when I heard The Impressions, Curtis Mayfield really caught my ear! Well, we tried to capture the sound of those groups. They were both from Chicago. Later when we formed The Mag Men, we had a lot of Chicago’s Carl Davis (Famed Record Producer) in us. Question: Now, The Del-Cords are playing the area and building an audience. Didn’t you eventually cut a single for Impala Records? Dave: Yes, we were signed to Impala in Philadelphia. It was above Chips Record Distribution. I remember when one of the label guys heard me sing and he asked, “Are you Len Barry?” (of The Dovells) He said I sounded like a cross between Len and Sam Cooke (laughs). But with that record I tried to catch Doo-Wop and Soul together. We got some airplay in Philly and Pittsburgh, but not much beyond. Question: You wrote both sides on that release. And this is what year ? Dave: Yes, and that was 1963/1964. . .but at the time even with a record out, we weren’t able to really break out of the area and hit other places. As I mentioned, we had played some of the same shows with The Endells and I had my eye on them, as far as possibly joining forces. I felt we were the better group as far as vocals, but they had it over us with musicianship. In addition, we were both mixed groups and at that time there were a lot of club owners who wouldn’t book either of us. It was stupid, but just the way it was. So we felt that combining and as an allwhite group we could travel and break out of the area. Question: Was that the beginning of The Magnificent Men? Dave: Well, first we called ourselves The Magnificent Seven, after the movie, but then we found out there were other bands with that name so we were up in New York at one point walking along Broadway and we saw this Marquee announcing the film “Those Magnificent Men in 16 HARRISBURG MAGAZINE AUGUST 2020
Their Flying Machines” and there it was (laughs). Question: With these two outfits coming together, what sound were you really going after? Dave: We all were really immersed in the “Chicago Style.” Artists like Walter Jackson, Billy Butler, Major Lance, Gene Chandler to name just a handful. That was our thing. We were a “Northern Soul” act even though it hadn’t been invented yet. Question: So you were the inventors? Dave: Well, maybe (laughs). Question: Now with the new group, did things begin to open up with more bookings ? Dave: Yes, and one big thing that happened was the opening of The Raven in Harrisburg. A guy by the name of Dick Phelan who was a builder and promoter had been putting on shows for a while at different locations like The Battle of The Bands at the Mechanicsburg V.F.W. which The Del-Cords had played and he approached us and said, “I’m building a club and I want you to be the house band and you can rehearse there as well.” Question: Wow, so you can say that The Raven was the club that The Mag Men built. Dave: Well, sort of (laughs), but it was really something and Dick asked me if he should bring in acts from outside the area and I said. “Yes, bring in the The O’Jays and we baked them up. (laughs) Question: And The Raven was really the place for live music at that time? Dave: Absolutely. So many acts played there, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, The Isley Brothers, you name it and us playing there regularly we were becoming more popular. Question: How did you ultimately come to the attention of Capitol records? Dave: We played a show at The Peppermint Lounge in New York on a Sunday and it was there that we met a guy who would become our manager, Ronny Gitiman. He liked our sound so much. He said he could set up an audition for us with Capitol. So we go in and perform and in no time, these executives said, “You’re Signed.” You see, Capitol wanted to get into the R&B business, but looking back, who decides to take their first step into R&B with an all-white group? (laughs) However, we were one of the self -contained groups with instruments and everything. Question: Capitol Records, they were about the biggest label on the planet with The Beatles and The Beach Boys among so many others. Did you feel like you now made it big? Dave: It was exciting, and in those days it was very rare to get a three record deal, which we did. But when we were with them and we traveled back into a given area for another performance like Pittsburgh or Detroit, there always seemed to be a new promotional person from the label and we would have to start over again with them becoming familiar with us. They had a high turnover in those positions and it led to inconsistent promotion of our music because these new people didn’t know us. Question: But they did have plenty of resources to promote you across the country? Dave: Oh yeah. Capitol had money to burn and they must of because we didn’t see any! (laughs) Thinking back, I wish we would have gone
with Motown or Atlantic; a black owned label that knew our music and how to really find the audience. Question: Now being signed to a major label, things must have picked up quick with recording sessions and live shows in other parts of the country. Dave: Yes. We recorded our first album and “Peace of Mind” was the first single off of it and the song became a hit in Chicago, a #1 R&B hit in Philly and Detroit. Now when Capitol was promoting the record they didn’t make a point of announcing that we were a white group. So when the song began to climb the charts in areas and we then had shows booked in those towns, it came as a bit of a surprise to these promoters and agents. When we played the Uptown in Philly, I remember Georgie Woods who was a popular DJ on “WDAS,” looking at us and saying, “Oh, this is going to be good” (laughs). But we went over great, and we also played the Howard Theater in D.C. Question: This was 1965? Dave: Yes. Question: Having a #1 R&B hit in Detroit of all places, how did you guys feel? Dave: We were still at The Raven at the time and The Temptations happened to come back in for a show. Now we had played with them before and at one point, when everyone is sitting around, I said to Eddie Kendricks, “I want to play you something.” So I put on “Peace” and they go, “Wow, this is you!” Then Otis Williams turns to Eddie and says, “I knew it was those white guys from Pennsylvania” (laughs). Question:That’s classic. Now is this about the time you headlined at The Apollo? Dave: Well, we were getting airplay in New York and this led to three shows at The Apollo and we headlined the third one. At the first show, the audience threw pennies at us (laughs). Question: Was this a good sign? Dave: No, but we opened with “Show Me” and quickly won them over. “Misty” was always a hit with the audience as well. I remember at one point seeing Smokey Robinson watching our set from the side of the stage in his bathrobe (laughs.) The second time up it was a Saturday midnight show which was the toughest audience, and we were on the bill with Fred Parris and The Restless Hearts among others, Tommy Hunt was the headliner. Well, Tommy was sick and couldn’t make it. Now James Brown was there taking in the show and they asked him to fill in for Tommy. So, I learned this, he (James) says to J.J. Jackson, who was on the bill, “They want me to sing and I don’t have anyone to back me up.” J.J says, “Go up to the third floor, they’re some whites who can back you up.” So that’s how that happened (laughs). Question: That just had to be incredible. And James was happy with the sound. Dave: Oh, yeah. We did a one hour show with James, and when we were doing “I’ll Go Crazy,” he turned around and was smiling at 18 HARRISBURG MAGAZINE AUGUST 2020
us. And then we had our show as the headliner in 1966. We were the first white group to headline The Apollo. Question: So you became a crowd favorite. Dave: On stage. They loved you on stage, but outside they wanted to kill you. Familiarity breeds contempt (laughs). There was just a lot of tension in the world at that time. Question: I imagine you were touring all over the country at this point? Dave: Actually, Chicago was as far west as we ever played more than once. Question: Really? You didn’t play the west coast, Los Angeles? Dave: No. It’s funny, but “KGFJ,” an R&B station in L.A. actually broke our record when they found out we were white. They literally broke it into pieces and sent it back to Capitol (laughs). Question: That’s shocking. How about television appearances? Where your records doing well? Dave: Yeah, we were on shows in Detroit, and we appeared on The Merv Griffin and The Mike Douglas Shows in Philly. We were on Jerry Blavat’s TV show in Philly about ten times. Question: And during this time you continued to have records released like “Maybe, Maybe Baby,” “I Could Be So Happy,” and “Sweet Soul Medley?” Dave: Yes, but as I mentioned, there were always new faces at the label and I just don’t think they really knew how to promote us. It was a new market for them, and they didn’t know what to do. Question: When you look back, is there any one recording that stands out as your favorite? Dave: The “World of Soul” album. That was the best R&B we could do. We really hit it with that one. We went to Chicago to record and worked with Carl Davis, which was great. Of course that was our last record with Capitol. Question: You then signed with Mercury Records? Dave: Yeah, we did the one album, and I left the group shortly thereafter. Question: What led to your decision to leave? Dave: I left after a show we did in Las Vegas. Being in a band was a means to an end as far as working in the music business, and I was looking at other opportunities. Question: You felt that things had just run their course? Dave: Sort of. I came back to York and I spent a year as a Record Department manager at places like Mailman’s, The Bon-Ton, and then in late 1971 I joined RCA in Promotions. Question: How long were you in promotions? Dave: I was in it for about ten years. RCA primarily, but also Private Stock Records. Question: So you were responsible for promoting new releases to radio stations? Dave: Yes, in the Baltimore, Washington, and the Virginia region. At one point I was
promoted to Northeast Regional Manager and had five salesmen reporting to me. But I didn’t like middle management. I wanted to be out on the front line. That’s where you made things happen and learned what the trends were in the business, firsthand. Question: Was it pretty fast paced? Dave: Well, you had three weeks max to promote a record and get it in into rotation in a market. Question: RCA was huge at that time with so many different music styles. Any records in particular that you broke which really stand out? Dave: Several. The Main Ingredient, “Everybody Plays The Fool,” New York City, “I’m Doing Fine Now,” The Tymes’ ‘”You Little Trustmaker,” and John Denver’s “Rocky Mountain High.” Question: John Denver? Dave: Yeah. I was actually at a promotions meeting one time and some top execs from RCA were there and they had reservations about “Rocky Mountain High,” a five-minute country song being able to do anything on the pop charts. I was able to convince them that with enough push, it’ll be a hit. So my manager then says, “Now you better deliver, it’s on you.” Well I did and it was (laughs.) Question: Pressure is a great motivator. Dave: Oh yeah, but it’s a great song, and I just knew it would hit. When you believe in something, you put yourself out there. Question: And I can see that you have done that throughout your career. Dave: I like to think so. Not always with success (laughs). Question: Any chance we might see a Mag Men reunion show? Dave: I don’t think so. I’m 78 now, and I’ve been retired for years now. Question: Well, we have all of those great recordings and some live footage on sites like Youtube. So the music will continue. Thank you for all of the great music and sharing some of your memories. And again, congrats on the induction! Dave: Thank you. It really is an honor. 7
Putting Pen to Paper Story and Photo By Warren Nast
I
have a feeling in my gut, that I am supposed to write, but there is a nagging voice in my head that tells me I have nothing to say. Writing silences that voice. A blank screen or page means anything is possible. Writing allows me to cross the bridge between the impossible and possible,” says Jenni Allen, a member of Fredrickson Writes. The Fredrickson Writers Group was birthed out of the Natalie Craumer bi-annual workshops which are held at the Fredrickson Library. The group first met in September 2014. Now the group meets on the first and third Mondays of every month starting at 6:45 p.m. There is no pressure to contribute or submit writing, but you must be 18 years or older to join the group. Attendance is free, but reservations through the library is required as there is limited seating. “We are crammed like a bunch of sardines in that room,” says Emily Nardella. Mike Kosarowich is Fredrickson Write’s coordinator. His role is to facilitate the meeting and encourage members at all levels in their writing. “Many members are finishing novels, working on plays and submitting articles and short stories. We are serious about the craft, and provide a safe and constructive place to grow,” he explains. “Putting a story on paper makes it permanent. As writers, we have a responsibility to tell truths through our writing. Writing is important, and there is more truth conveyed through fiction then in one on one interactions,” says Kosarowich. “One of my joys of leading the group is seeing writers grow in their craft. Sunbury Press published the anthology Bittersweet, which was composed of stories by the members of the Fredrickson Writers Group and edited by Cathy Jordan. Original member Deanne Burch has been working on her memoir and says, “Writing is a way to express myself, to keep my brain sharp 20 HARRISBURG MAGAZINE AUGUST 2020
and to be creative.” When asked about what the group and writing means to her, Jessica Chuckalovcak, who has been a member of the group for more than five years says, “Writing means everything to me. It’s selfexpression, it's storytelling, it's risk-taking, it’s challenging, and it’s playing on the page. “If you do join a writers group, my advice is to make sure that you’re ready. I attended another writing group a few times before I found Fredrickson and never went back. It wasn’t the group. It was me. I wasn’t ready to share my writing and then distance myself enough to receive feedback on how I could improve without having my feelings hurt.” “Writing gives me a sense of purpose,” says Silva Hart, an Amazon author and a former Fredrickson member. “The idea of waking up, going to a nine-to-five, coming home, eating dinner, and going to bed only to do it all over again the next day and the next is beyond dreary and tedious to me. I may as well be the walking dead. Writing gives my life passion, magic, and excitement. I get very cranky when I don’t write. Right now this is my side hustle, but my goal is to live off my writing. This is something I’m working very hard to achieve. My romance line on Amazon is generating income, so I am on my way to achieving my goal thanks to my time with the Fredrickson Writers Group.” Hart adds, “Members of the group were kind and considerate. They’re all here to do the same thing; they give constructive not destructive feedback. Sometimes it’s only your own head that is holding you back. You just need fellow writers to give you a pat on the back and let you know that you do have the legs to continue on your journey.” Future children’s writer and current member, Katie Merkel adds, “I never really asked myself what writing means to me. I hope to be a professional author one day, and I enjoy the camaraderie of talking to other writers, especially fiction writers. Writing is a way of creatively sharing my ideas with others. It’s also a way to have imaginary friends without people thinking I’m weird. Being a part of the group has helped me by giving me deadlines. Feedback from the group has also made me more aware of my bad writing habits.” Emily Nardella, seconds that sentiment and says, “I love when we get into a conversation about a piece, when we are all excited about the possibilities for a story, and share that with the writer. We do critiques, but we are really supportive and cheer each other on. I love the camaraderie of spending time with other writers. It’s great to see the growth among all the writers in the group. (and published) authors.” “Robert Craumer, a Camp Hill resident, sought a way to honor his late wife, Natalie, who was a voracious reader. Natalie read her way through four libraries, and also wrote short stories. In 2003, Craumer decided that a writing workshop at his local library would not only honor his wife, but would also further the education of aspiring writers,” says Cathy Jordan, a published horror novelist. “The workshop has been continually offered in the fall and spring, and is free to the community. Originally facilitated by Ann Stewart, I took over in 2013,” Jordan adds. “The Natalie D. Craumer Writer’s Workshop has encouraged me, motivated me, and continually strengthens my writing. The friends and contacts I have made are an invaluable resource. Learning is constant for me and the class. If you’re not writing, you’re not moving forward. This writing group keeps me going,” adds Jordan. “Joining a writing group such as Fredrickson Writes is a surefire way to overcome these mental obstacles and receive much needed validation, encouragement, and support. They keep you accountable; and ultimately make your dreams come true,” says Hart. And when there is a fifth Monday in the month members can often be found having dinner and drinks at a local watering hole...an extra bonus of belonging to a group. TASTE THIS! It’s Friday. What’s for lunch?
It’s true. Harrisburg Magazine staffers continue to look forward to Fridays so they can put their editorial taste buds to work by sampling items from local restaurants and offering their candid reviews in return. When “Taste This!” was launched in March, the idea was simple: a local eatery would provide lunch and in return get a food review, both in print and online. We thought it would be a win-win situation for all and it was. The first three local eateries to respond were declared charter members and they included Soul House Café, Hong Kong Ruby and Market Street Deli. Then COVID-19 restrictions were put in place and Harrisburg Magazine went remote. But we’re now back at 3400 N. Sixth Street in Harrisburg, practicing social distancing and wearing our masks. We’re just as hungry as ever and we can’t wait to sample what’s out there and look forward to accurately conveying the taste, texture, smell and presentation of the food items before us on Fridays for our readers. We want to thank all six local eateries for providing the delicious lunches that have allowed us to sample real food instead of relying on our brown bag lunches from home. We also want to extend the invitation for other restaurants to take part. So if you would like to be featured in Harrisburg Magazine then reach out to us. Contact your sales representative directly, call the main office at 717-233-0109, or contact Editor Jackie Goodwin, at jgoodwin@harrisburgmagazine.com.

THE GLASS LOUNGE
Since 1984, The Glass Lounge has proudly served the highest quality steaks, seafood and sandwiches in Central Pennsylvania. Voted Harrisburg Magazine's “Simply the Best” and “Readers' Choice” time and time again, its U.S.D.A. Choice steaks (23-27 ounces) are the top-selling fan favorites. Time-tasted menu items also include a garden fresh salad piled high with carrots, French fries, baked potato, sautéed mushrooms and spaghetti (available Monday through Thursday), a large variety of appetizers such as shrimp cocktail and breaded mushrooms, and the ever popular tenderloin steak sandwich and crab cake sandwich. Daily luncheon specials are also available.

Directions Fill a cocktail shaker with crushed ice, add the ingredients, shake and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with the orange peel(if you have one, if not, no problem). This is a good reason to find Orange Bitters as it complements the taste. This is a light cocktail since vermouth is only 30 proof. So it might be well suited as a pre-brunch cocktail. According to Mr. Solon, he was at work one day when the head waiter in the main dining room challenged him to make a new cocktail. Since Mr. Solon had just finished making a Duplex he decided to make a drink with gin.
Bartender’s Best By Charlie Wohlrab
T
he Bronx Cocktail, a Martini’s fruit-laced cousin, has a few reported origins and subsequent variations. Apparently, Joseph Sormani, a restauranteur from the Bronx had enjoyed one in Philly and took the recipe back to his restaurant in the early 1900s. That’s right. The Bronx Cocktail may have had its origin in Philly. The New York Times lends credence to this story with a mention in the obituary for Mr. Sormani as the creator of the Bronx Cocktail. The Bronx Cocktail is essentially a Martini with orange juice added. In the 1934, it was ranked one of “The World’s 10 Most Famous Cocktails” and was even featured in The Thin Man, a popular movie back in the day that starred William Powell. Here’s the recipe and directions to make The Bronx Cocktail Mr. Sormani’s Bronx Cocktail • 2 ounces gin • ½ ounce dry vermouth • ½ ounce orange juice Directions Fill a cocktail shaker with crushed ice, add the ingredients, shake and strain into a cocktail glass. As with a Martini, use a good gin as the taste of the gin comes through. The Duplex Legend has it that the Duplex was a pre-cursor to the famous Bronx Cocktail. Created around 1900 by bartender Johnnie Solon of the Waldorf Astoria. There are no real flavors to hide the taste of the vermouth, so I recommend souring out one that you really like. • 1 and ¼ ounces sweet vermouth • 1 and ¼ ounces dry vermouth • A dash or two of orange bitters • 1 orange peel 88 HARRISBURG MAGAZINE AUGUST 2020
Johnnie Solon’s Bronx Cocktail • 2 ounces gin • 1 ounce orange juice • Dash sweet vermouth • Dash dry vermouth Directions Fill a cocktail shaker with crushed ice, add the ingredients, shake and strain into a cocktail glass. According to legend, the drink became very popular, and needing a name it was decided to call it a Bronx Cocktail. The Bronx Zoo had recently opened and patrons would see new and interesting animals and this was a new and interesting cocktail hence the name. As long as you have gin, sweet vermouth and orange juice, why not try a classic Prohibition Era cocktail, The Orange Blossom. This cocktail, as with many of this era, has possible origins with an equal number of variations. I believe this cocktail was created to mask the taste of the sub-standard gins that were being made who knows where. What follows is a basic recipe, but a Google Search should provide many variations as well as origins. The Orange Blossom • 1 ounce gin • 1 ounce sweet vermouth • 1 ounce orange juice Directions Half fill a cocktail mixing glass with ice, add the ingredients, a few gentle shakes and either strain into a Martini glass to serve up or pour into a rocks glass to serve “on the rocks.” To fully appreciate the origin and history of this drink I like to use the cheapest gin I can find.
