Bobby Gunther Walsh Chats With Paramedic Jenn Eicholtz I NT E RVI E W BY BOBBY GUNTHER WAL SH PHOTOS COU RT E SY OF CETRONIA AMBUL ANCE CORP S

Gunther: This month I'm featuring a really great, amazing, feel good story that happened with the Cetronia Ambulance Corps. As a result of what happened, they ended up awarding their First-Ever Citizen Hero Award on July 3 to a nine-year-old girl. To tell us about it is one of the people involved, Paramedic Jenn Eicholtz... Jenn, how ya doing? Jenn: I’m good. How are you? Gunther: Good. So this is an amazing story...talk to me... give us the backstory... tell us the whole story... I got a great press release, but I don’t want to steal the thunder... I’d rather you tell us. Jenn: Absolutely. I’d love to tell it... it is an amazing story. It was Friday, April 26... it was absolutely pouring outside; we had that monsoon like weather, and I remembered the date, because the next day was actually my birthday. It was close to the end of our shift, and we were dispatched to a MVA with Rollover with Multiple Injuries. When we arrived on scene, we were the third truck in.There was a car that had hydroplaned off of Twin Pond Road and landed on its roof into the woods. When I got on scene, the first truck in was in charge, and they directed me to a minivan that was up on the road with a bystander. Inside the vehicle were three young children, a toddler and two young girls... all who had been inside the vehicle. I quickly triaged all three to make sure one wasn’t more critical than the other. They were all fine; just shaken up. So I grabbed the one that was closest to me and literally picked her up...and it happened to be Mahliyah. I carried her back into my truck, did a thorough assessment of her, and asked her what had happened. When she told me what happened, her absolutely amazing story, I was really taken aback. She said the car had gone off the road and landed on its roof. She happened to notice a light coming through the trunk so she unbuckled herself and crawled through the trunk, through a hole that had formed from the accident, went up onto the road in the rain and waved down an oncoming car. When the car stopped, the driver had told her to get into the car and she said no, that she would not get into the car, but needed them to call 911 and follow her back to the accident scene. She walked to the accident scene, crawled back into the car and removed a toddler out of her car seat, and helped her get out of the car to safety and then her friend, who was almost out of the car already, she finished helping her get out 4 LEHIGH VALLEY MAGAZINE AUGUST 2019

of the car. As it had turned out, that was Mahliyah’s very first ever sleepover... so she was a guest with this family. She wasn’t even with her own family. She also, at nine years old, knew every phone number to every family member, and gave me her mother’s cell phone number. Her mother’s name is Alicia. I had to call her from the back of the truck to tell her that her child was not injured, but was in a car accident. Alicia was at work, and didn’t answer initially, so I just kept calling and calling and calling until she finally answered the phone. Obviously, she was upset and had a lot of questions which I answered, and then she asked to talk to Mahliyah.I gave her the phone. Mahliyah was calmer probably than Alicia and I put together, she was like ‘I’m fine mom, we’re good...’ after a couple minutes, ya know we hung up, and were getting ready to leave the scene. I called Alicia back to let her know we were leaving and we would be at Lehigh Valley Hospital--Cedar Crest in about 20 minutes. I told Alicia what her daughter had done, and that we were all very proud of her. After the call, I met with my Director of Operations Chris Peischl. He said ‘hey, ya know, I think we need to do something here. It’s not every day that we see adults doing these things, let alone nine-year-old children, who show such courage and bravery... and she was smart enough not to get into a car with a stranger...‘ It was all pretty impressive. So Larry Wiersch, our CEO, and Chris Peischl agreed and we created this award and presented it to her at our station on Broadway, which was pretty exciting. Gunther: Yeh...this is an amazing story... a nine-year-old girl, folks, with the presence of mind to free herself, go out and wave somebody down, tell them to call 911, not get into the car with them, lead them back, get a child... a toddler out of her car seat and then help another friend... and then of course, your guys had to extricate the driver because she was trapped, but that is such presence. It wasn’t just that she did it, but she apparently did it with such composure. Jenn: Absolutely. It was impressive. I keep telling her, she can come be an EMT on my unit any day! Gunther: You guys gave her... you guys created this Cetronia Ambulance Corps' first-ever, Citizen’s Hero Award. Jenn: And it couldn’t go to a more worthy recipient.

Gunther: By the way, what was her dad’s reaction? Jenn: He was not available... and I did not meet him... and I apologize... I don’t know his name. Gunther: They gotta be blown away by their daughter. Jenn: Absolutely. Apparently, from what I understand, she has a history of first responders in the family. There’s a lot of family members (grandparents, aunts, and uncles) that are involved in either Fire and EMS...and plus, when they came for the awards ceremony, her younger twin siblings came (they are eight years old)... all three of them, their past time is to watch safety videos on you tube. Gunther: Oh my gosh... you’re kidding. Jenn: No, I’m not. I wish I was... and her brother, his name is Julian, he’s eight years old, one of the twins... he wants to be a firefighter... and he rattled off all these facts about firetrucks...I’m pretty sure he knew more about them than our actual firefighters. Gunther: Wow. This is an amazing young family. Jen: They are all amazing. Gunther: What a great hero. I mean, who knows what the outcome may have been otherwise... and not only to do what she did, but as you said, to have the phone numbers, everybody’s contact info. It’s great that you guys created this award, and it’s great what the Cetronia Ambulance Corps. does all the time... you can find out more at www.Cetronia.org... so thank you for

the work.. cuz I’m sure you guys see a lot of gruesome stuff, and a lot of tough stuff...so for you guys, this had to be a morale booster for everyone at the ambulance corps. Jenn: It absolutely is. We do see a lot of devastating things, but we see a lot of good...ya know, people think there is a lot of bad out there, but I can tell you, there is a lot of good...it just really leaves a mark when it’s a nine-year-old child that had that kind of courage. Gunther: What are some of the takeaways? There are a lot of lessons here. What are some takeaways from this for what people should do at the scene of an accident? Jenn: Well actually... we participate in Safety Town, which is technically run by Lehigh Valley Hospital where they go into Elementary Schools... for a week...every day they are at a different elementary School in the Valley... they go through different kinds scenarios...teaching children what to do in emergencies... inside the home, outside the home...so they had a little bit of preparations... but like I said, these children find entertainment in watching safety videos... so she was probably more prepared than most adults, just given that fact... but what she has been doing, thanks to her school (Cetronia Elementary), they asked her to tell people, other children in her grade, what to do in those type of situations... so she is also now out there educating other people and educating her community, which is also phenomenal at nine years olf age. Gunther: First of all, what was her Mother’s initial reaction when she met you at the hospital? About what her daughter did? And, what was her reaction as they were receiving the award, and were now more composed and had time to think about it? LEHIGH VALLEY MAGAZINE AUGUST 2019 5

Jenn: So, I actually did not meet Alicia at the hospital. We ended up arriving before she was there. She had been quite a distance away, like I said, she was working. I didn’t meet her until we presented Mahliyah with the award. When I spoke to her she had said to me,‘ya know, being a mom, her first sleepover... all day long, I had this weird nagging feeling... it was just kinda like bothering me’... so when Mahliyah and this little girl had gone out to dinner and she hadn’t heard back from them, had sent a text message and whatnot...and shortly thereafter the phone call she had received was from me...so it was apparent that this had happened on the way back from wherever they were eating dinner that evening. Gunther: Yeh, it was a Friday night. Jenn: Yeh... so when I spoke to her at first, she had this weird nagging mom feeling... so she was kinda surprised but not surprised, but extremely relived... I did my best to reassure her that she was ok, everything looked good and we talked for a little bit. But again, I’m not surprised sometimes by Mahliyah’s courage ... her mother is pretty impressive too... she has a good strong family there. Gunther: Besides the mother’s intuition that something might be wrong, what was her reaction though, to what her daughter did? Jenn: She, at first was speechless.I kept having Mahliyah call her.Every time she asked to talk to her mom, I let her use my cell phone. I let her call. We both just kept saying over and over again, I can’t believe she just did this... like wow... that’s all any of us could really say. And every time I repeat the story, when people ask me about all of it... everyone is kinda speechless initially, like her mother. Gunther: What a great story, so I thought I’d share that with you from the Cetronia Ambulance Corps... and their first-ever Citizen Hero Award... given to Mahliyah, she calls herself ‘Mia’ Perez... Cetronia Elementary School Student, nine-years-old... getting that first-ever award, that’s amazing...that’s impressive! Jenn, thank you for what you and again thank everybody at the ambulance corps for what they do... and thanks for sharing this story. Jenn: Thank you for taking the time to give her the attention she deserves. Gunther: Absolutely! 7
