USA Wrestling Women’s Freestyle
USA Wrestling Women’s Freestyle Background
•
Women have only wrestled at the Olympics 3 times (2004, 2008, 2012). In comparison, men’s wrestling goes back to the ancient Olympic Games, and was included in the first modern Olympic Games in Greece in 1896.
•
Japan is the world power in women’s wrestling, winning the 17 times since 1987. The only other nations to win a World Team Title in Women’s freestyle are United States, China, Russia, and France.
•
There are six weight classes for women’s wrestling at the Olympic Games. There are eight weight classes at the senior world Championships and six weight classes at the Olympic Games. Prior to 2013 there where seven weight classes at world championships & only four at the Olympic Games
•
Women’s college wrestling started in the late 1990s, but limited. Since being recognized as an Olympic Sport, educational opportunities have grown with over 20 college varsity teams in the United States. The female athletes in college compete in freestyle, the Olympic style, rather than the American folkstyle of wrestling practiced in college for men.
!
USA Wrestling Women’s Freestyle Today ! ! •
The power balance in women’s wrestling is changing. The traditional national power houses in the sport remain strong, but more countries are building strong teams, especially in eastern Europe where men’s wrestling has had a strong success and tradition.
•
The focus of the Women’s National program is always evolving. When women’s wrestling was first introduced to the 2004 Olympics, the focus group was the Senior team as they where the athletes prepping women’s wrestling inaugural olympiad. We will need to increase the focus on the developmental programs while maintaining our commitment to the senior level.
•
A crucial part of success is developing qualified coaches in the United States. Providing high level educational resources for our existing coaches and while recruiting coaches into the women’s coaching pool will require resources.
•
Our goal is to become the top nation in the world in women’s wrestling. We need supporters like your self who share our vision and are able to commit to being part of our program.
•
Our success depends on an expansion of resources for our program. Both financial and structural support are imperative to help our athletes reach their full human and athletic potential.
