A Dyer’s Journey Through Art and Fashion Until 29 November 2014
Marian Clayden, detail of Ceremonial Enclosure, 1974
From dyeing fabrics for costumes and sets for the iconic musical, Hair, to producing hand-dyed haute couture garments worn by Hollywood A-Listers, this exhibition showcases Preston-born Marian Clayden’s unique and luxurious designs. A Dyer’s Journey Through Art and Fashion is a retrospective of Marian’s career from the 1970s-90s, charting her development as an artist and celebrating her experiments in dyeing fabrics and fashion design. The show features vibrant silk wall-hangings, sculptural works and garments from her fashion label, Clayden Inc. Also included is a display by Fulwood Academy students experimenting with tie-dye techniques. See our website for details of talks, tours and workshops about the art of dyeing.

70 years of Pauline at the Harris Museum & Art Gallery
8 November 2014 – 28 February 2015
James Gunn, Pauline in the Yellow Dress, 1944
Pauline in the Yellow Dress by Sir James Gunn caused a sensation when it arrived at the Harris 70 years ago. It was given the accolade of ‘The Mona Lisa of 1944’ at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Today, Pauline in the Yellow Dress is still one of the most popular paintings in our collection. This exhibition is a rare opportunity to see a selection of the many portraits Gunn painted of his wife, including works that have not been on public display before, alongside the yellow dress and archive material. The exhibition revisits the excitement of 1944 and commemorates the life of Sir James Gunn who died 50 years ago this December. Look out for details of talks, tours and events to celebrate ‘Pauline's’ anniversary on our website.
