A Green and Pleasant Land?

Rural life in Art

25 July – 26 September

Andrew Cross, An English Field (Barn), digital video 2007

Idyllic scenery, derelict barns, farmers toiling the land? We explore how artists have been inspired by our rural heritage, from the romantic to the real. Images from our collection include Preston landscapes and work by Anthony Devis, Thomas Wade, Adrian Stokes and Norman Stevens. We also include artists working today like Georgina Barney and Andrew Cross and, in partnership with In Certain Places, we are pleased to show work by Rebecca Chesney and Joanne Lee. Visit our cafĂŠ and stairway to see complementary rural-themed displays (see page 7 for details). Families can also enjoy a trail focusing on the seasons of the farming year. See our website or call us for details of family events and gallery tours.

Style and Substance Fashion, Society, Change 1880–1930s From 27 June

Clothes from the Harris collection, 1880–1930s

From the elaborate dresses of the 1880s to chunky knits in the 1930s, we explore how British style, for men and women, evolved during a time of major social, political and cultural change. Find out about the phantom bustle of the 1880s and dangerous accessories of the 1900s. Compare the practical clothing of World War I to the flimsy but fabulous flapper styles of the 1920s, and enjoy the relaxed and glamorous fashions of the 1930s. Look out for opening tours on 27 June and vintage stalls on 8 August, both in association with the Revival vintage fairs on Market Square outside the museum.
