Workplace 11 May – 6 July From school to adulthood, we spend a huge amount of our lives in the workplace.

In it, life-long friendships and romances are formed; it provides the arena in which power games and gender politics are played out at a macro and micro level; it is the setting for innovation and life-changing research as well as mind-numbing repetition and boredom.

Through film works made by leading international artists, this exhibition explores the frustrations of life as an employee across the globe, revealing the often humorous strategies for survival and expressions of individualism that prevail.

Artists featured: Adel Abidin, Emily Jacir, João Onofre, Pilvi Takala, John Wood and Paul Harrison and a new commission by Superflex. Workplace is a Mead Gallery touring exhibition organised in association with the Harris Museum & Art Gallery, Preston.

IOU: Volatile Light 20 July – 24 August

Step out of the summer sunshine and into a different world. Experience a miniature, wraparound universe of moving lights and sounds with you at the centre of it.

Volatile Light features an array of specially made machines with LED lights attached to rotating arms, levers and cranks that weave a series of eccentric curves, sweeping arcs and hectic scribbles in the darkened gallery. Lights are transformed into a complex mixture of overlapping light trails and patterns using digital technology.

7 September – 30 November Masterstrokes brings you the only chance to see some of York Art Gallery’s finest paintings on this side of the Pennines.

The exhibition features work from the past 600 years, from 15th century Italian art to works by David Hockney and LS Lowry.

Dutch landscapes contrast with Walter Sickert’s view of Venice and Paul Nash’s Winter Sea. A portrait by Hogarth is complemented by EM Ward’s Victorian interpretation of Hogarth’s Studio.

This is a rare opportunity to experience such a focused, yet diverse selection of oil paintings in the North West – don’t miss it.

Other artists featured include: William Etty, Bernadino Fungai, Albert Moore, Sir Matthew Smith, and William Powell Frith.

Impressit: The art of printmaking

Explore the art of quilting and how it has been used for practical, decorative and campaigning purposes.

Thirteen internationally respected contemporary printmakers showcase recent work highlighting the printing processes they use.

This exhibition brings together quilts made by the Well Women’s Centre as part of Preston Guild 1992, along with examples of quilting and patchwork from the Harris collection.

The Soldier’s Song 12–20 April

Step inside the booth and sing a karaoke duet with a soldier.

The Soldier’s Song is a quietly provocative installation from theatre company, Quarantine, developed over an 18-month period with currently serving soldiers. Find out more at Quarantine’s website: www.qtine.com

Following the recent Digital Aesthetic 3 exhibition, digital artist, Terry Flaxton, was so pleased with the installation of his work, In Re Ansel Adams, 2008, that he donated it to the Harris. This mesmerising digital video piece can be seen in the fine art gallery.

The Soldier’s Song is presented and produced by Live at LICA (Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts) with funding from Lancashire County Council. www.liveatlica.org

Stairway exhibition Alison Tootell & Gary Wiggins 17 April – 29 June Recent UCLan graduates Alison Tootell and Gary Wiggins explore themes of urban culture and degeneration through meticulous pencil drawings.

Tootell’s finely detailed architectural studies depict vacated buildings in various stages of abandonment, while Wiggins’ energetic animal portraits question our use of animals as status symbols and test subjects. www.alisontootell.co.uk

We are also delighted that John Wood & Paul Harrison have donated an artists’ proof of their video, DIYVBIED, 2012 to our collection. This piece was commissioned for the same exhibition.

Puck by Richard Dadd, acquired in 2011 through support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, The Art Fund, the Friends of the Harris Museum & Art Gallery, and a bequest by Dorothy Wade through Arts Council England, will be back on display this spring after minor conservation.

This important work has enhanced the painting and stabilised it for future generations to enjoy. The painting also underwent paint analysis and had x-rays taken to help us learn more about its history and Dadd’s working methods.

Information about this exciting research will be available on the Harris website from late spring.

In the café this spring/summer, there’s a flavour of the 2012 Cotton Exchange Project between Gujarat, India and NW England, curated by young co-producer Katherine Wynn. The displays feature artist and co-producer work; cotton industry artefacts from museum collections; textiles and other items collected on the research trip to Gujarat.

Elsewhere in the museum, from May onwards look out for Family Threads: stories of faith, love, separation and loss in Preston families through a selection of embroidered samplers from 1800 to 1918. There will also be a new display from the Spencer collection of children’s books focusing on the work of artist and illustrator Kate Greenaway.
