Welcome Jazz World

“The North of England’s Leading Arts festival” The Times

This year, we pay homage to the ethos of the Festival’s founder, Clive Wilson, whose vision was a Festival of Arts and Science. 2011 welcomes a science strand headed by Lord Robert Winston, exploring what it means to be human. As science explores our genetic make-up, the arts explore the DNA of our hearts. Expect the very best in classical, orchestral and contemporary music with highlights including the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in dazzling Technicolor and Abdullah Ibrahim’s Ekaya’s only UK date this summer. Wilson also believed the Festival should widen its scope as years go by. And with three special guest programmers, we’re celebrating the best of the established and pushing the boundaries of the new and unexpected. Jazz legend Clare Teal will be introduced by a man who is a British institution: Michael Parkinson. On the other end of the jazz spectrum – Soweto Kinch – an award winning jazz and hip hop artist boldly goes places no jazz musician has gone before. This year, we see a new children’s festival offering a fun-packed weekend. The Festival is also building on its literary strand, curated by journalist and author Henry Sutton, with a very special event featuring Kate Atkinson at Fountain’s Abbey. As well as exercising your brain and creative juices, we’ll get your muscles pumping with our Carnegie Sporting Words events, where you can feel the burn with extreme marathon runner Robin Harvie. There’ll also be the usual festive frolics frothing around the edges of the main event as the Fringe gets bigger and buzzier. For those who can’t bear to be dragged away from the box (even for the world’s most inspirational musicians and writers) the Big Screen – a giant movie screen at the bottom of Montpellier Hill - makes a welcome return. Need more? Experience Europe’s most renowned crime writing event, the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival. Highlights include Dennis Lehane, Lee Child, Martina Cole, Tess Gerritsen, Linwood Barclay and Howard Marks. It’s a lot to pack in. So this year, we’re pacing the Festival over four long weekends throughout July. I look forward to welcoming you.

Clare Teal Guest Programmer Growing up 15 minutes away from Harrogate, Clare Teal used to visit the “posh town with the posh tea room” as a child. She grew up to present BBC Radio 2’s Big Band Special and to have her own Radio 2 show. A regular columnist in the Yorkshire Post, she famously landed a multi-million pound contract with Sony records – something virtually unheard of for a jazz musician outside the Radio 1 demographic. Counting Michael Parkinson as a fan, she’s worked with jazz legends and stars from Cleo Lane to Jamie Cullum. 2011 is a very special year as Clare guest curates the Festival’s jazz strand, introduced by the one and only, Michael Parkinson.

Soweto Kinch Guest Programmer The multiple MOBO and BBC Jazz Award winning jazz and hip hop artist, Soweto Kinch is considered one of the most exciting and versatile young musicians on the scene. Mentored by Courtney Pine OBE, now he graces the pages of the New York Times thanks to his innovative mix of UK urban and jazz scenes. Soweto is a crusader of music, hosting school workshops and composing scores, he boldly goes places no jazz musician has gone before. Soweto will be playing with his nine-piece band, featuring his new album, The New Emancipation, combining recorded and live footage and delivering a lecture that encompasses the economic downturn to race politics and the travails of the independent recording artist. Soweto brings a bold new voice to the Festival through his role as guest programmer.

Henry Sutton Literature Curator Narratives come in all shapes and forms. But what makes them stand out is how they are told. With literature it’s not always the story that makes the biggest impact but how it’s actually written – with intelligence, insight, humour and a sense of humanity. On top of this, of course, we always want to be entertained. The authors who’ll be appearing at this year’s festival don’t just know how to write but they also know how to inform, intrigue and entertain. They are all wonderful communicators, and all will be exploring, one way or another, that thin line which runs between fact and fiction. Whether the influence and inspiration is historical or contemporary, personal or political, mysterious, religious or satirical, all do great justice to the art of literature.

Aquarelle Guitar Quartet Artists in Residence We are honoured to be Artist in Residence for this year’s Festival, a truly remarkable event that brings together an amazing variety of musical styles & genres from the distinctive sounds of Abdullah Ibrahim to classical masters such as Andras Schiff and Steven Isserlis. Our passion as a quartet is in performing varied music spanning the globe, the guitar is ideally suited to this cause and in our Festival programmes we have endeavoured to capture elements of the musical styles portrayed by the other artists. We welcome some of our most respected friends and colleagues to Harrogate to share the stage with us and to create yet more diverse and exciting music making. Variety is the spice of life and there can be no better way to celebrate this than with the music events in Harrogate this summer!

John Wilson

Kim Criswell & Gary Williams

Putting on the Ritz: a celebration of Fred Astaire and his leading ladies John Wilson and his glittering scores have been the most exciting part of the recent BBC Proms seasons. Their sound – as big and technicolour as the great MGM musicals whose music they regularly play – matched with their ebullience won over audiences in the Royal Albert Hall and across the country via live television broadcasts. For this Gala Festival opener, Wilson is joined by his regular partner in crime the mesmerising Broadway vocalist Kim Criswell. Sharing the limelight is Grimsby born-and-bred singer Gary Williams, who started out as a regular singer with the BBC Big Band before landing a starring role in the West End show, Rat Pack.

Abdullah Ibrahim - Ekaya Musicologist Wilfrid Mellers once described the much loved and hugely influential South African composer and pianist, as a musician of both the old world and the new “on a razor edge between hazard and hope”. When Duke Ellington first heard – and recorded - Ibrahim’s band, his life was re-rooted from South Africa to New York. The versatile artist performs both solo and with his band, Ekaya, and not only on piano but on flute, saxophone and cello too. In addition to performances in concerts and clubs, his music can also be heard on the big screen as Ibrahim composed the soundtrack to the award winning Chocolat, and more recently No Fear, No Die. After the end of Apartheid, Ibrahim split his time between America and his home country. This dual citizenship reflects his unique sound with music that recalls the sounds of South Africa, mixing his country’s vocal and harmonic traditions with the rhythmic feeling and improvisation of jazz. The result? It’s said that once this man’s music is under your skin, you never forget it. “A legendary performer whose musical tensions deliver a sound that offers a “rare eloquence” The Guardian Tickets: £30, £22, £15. Bartok Chopin Schubert Beethoven

Rhapsody No. 1 Sonata Arpeggione Sonata Sonata No. 5, Op. 102/2

Acclaimed worldwide for his technique and musicianship, British cellist Steven Isserlis enjoys a distinguished career as a soloist, chamber musician and teacher. He’s played with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Washington National Symphony, delivered recitals at London’s Wigmore Hall and appeared at the BBC Proms. Renowned for his ingenuity and innovation, he is passionate about bringing music to children and delivers master classes all over the world. The recipient of many honours, Steven Isserlis was awarded a CBE in 1998 in recognition of his services to music. Perhaps one of the most romantic and evocative instruments, the repertoire for the cello never fails to show it off and Isserlis brings to Harrogate some of the most definite cello repertoire around. From the master of 20th century string chamber music in Bartok to Schubert’s Arpeggione – which whilst going through many incarnations for different ensembles, the cello arrangement remains the most cherished among classical-lovers. This programme is truly a treat not to be missed. “The music world - and music itself - is infinitely richer for the presence of Steven Isserlis” Gramophone Magazine Tickets: £20 Unreserved. Whatever your opinion of the forthright former New Labour Director of Communications, it’s impossible to deny his influence on the way the media portray – and people perceive – the workings of Westminster. For years he was at the heart of the Blair Government. A former Daily Mirror reporter and political editor, he faced his own demons in alcohol and stress before becoming one of the most influential people in the country through his work with the Labour party. Melvyn Bragg: The Book of Books The Radical Impact of the King James Bible A lecture event by Melvyn Bragg to mark the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible. Melvyn Bragg sets out to persuade us that the King James Version has driven the making of the Englishspeaking world over the last 400 years, often in the most unanticipated ways. He argues that while many think our modern world is founded on secular ideals, it is the King James Version which had a greater legacy. The King James Bible not only influenced the English language and its literature more than any other book, it was also the seedbed of western democracy, the activator of radical shifts in society such as the abolition of the slave trade, the debating dynamite for brutal civil wars in Britain and America and a critical spark in the genesis of modern science. “Have a break, have a Kit Kat”. It’s one of the most recognised slogans in advertising. So how did the humble milk-chocolate coated wafer become a global brand? The origins of the brand go back to 1911 when it was first produced by Rowntree confectioneries in York. Changing the foil wrapping to plastic was one of the most controversial moves for fans – but the bar has evolved and dominated; a master lesson in marketing, advertising and brand management.
