The Festival Spiegeltent returns to Crescent Gardens as a pop-up venue as part of the Festivals’ HIF+ programme. Jay Phelps - Guest Curator

Jay Phelps Quartet

Being asked to curate at the 2016 Harrogate Festival has been such an honour. As this is my first time as a curator, I wanted to show a wide variety of fantastic artists, some whose music is new to me and some whom I know very well. ESKA, is an artist like no other and a definite Festival highlight, I’ve known her amazing music for many years and it’s a privilege to be able to include her. Supporting the Festival’s Young Musicians programme is something I’m proud to be associated with, and I’m very much looking forward to hearing from wonderful young talent Vanessa Rani’s ensembles; Manjula and the Sandrani Duo. Her beautifully fused music is deeply-routed in India’s rich musical culture and effortlessly blended with sounds from around the globe. Another new voice on the scene is Alexander Bone. Just 19 years old, Saxophonist, Pianist, Composer & Arranger, Alexander won the BBC Young Musician - Jazz Award and I know he’s destined for big things.

Monday 12th September I 7.30pm

I have also brought two of my own projects. I’ll be performing original material from my upcoming second release with the Jay Phelps Quartet, whilst the Projections of Miles programme, is a night dedicated to the life and spirit of the great Miles Davis. I’m very privileged to present such an array of talented artists, I hope you enjoy! - Jay

Tonight you will hear classics and beautiful compositions not typically synonymous with the Davis cannon, all painted with a colourful contemporary brush. “The sold out crowd left the gig with smiles on their faces and Miles Davis ringing in their ears” London Jazz News

The debut album, How Do You Plead? was highly acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic - with American Songwriter stating it as “as authentic as anything out of Nashville or Texas”.
