welcome festival AT A GLANCE | 2019
Ian Rankin | Welcome! What a pleasure to welcome you all back to Harrogate and this year’s live-and-kicking festival after what has been such a traumatic sixteen months. This has always been a celebration of crime fiction – a celebration of fans as well as authors – and here’s hoping for sunshine and plenty of cold, frothing pints! I know first-hand how hard the programming committee has worked, aided by the unstoppable force of nature that is Sharon Canavar. Juggling large-scale festival logistics during a pandemic is not for those of a nervous disposition, so I’d like to thank everyone involved. We’ve a packed schedule for you, featuring the cream of contemporary writing, a starry array of special guests, and brilliant panels. So don’t waste a second of it. This is your weekend. Thanks for coming! Ian Rankin | 2021 Festival Programming Chair Simon Theakston | A very warm welcome, I say it every year, how can we build further on last year’s. It gives me immense pleasure to welcome you back to a returning Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, after what has been a very reflective year for us all. Our 2021 event might look and feel a little different to normal, with the Festival being run safely within government advice, however the programme is as outstanding as it always is, irrespective of some minor logistical changes. I am sure that the social side of the Festival will also be buzzing - a much loved aspect of the weekend at our traditional haunt of The Old Swan Hotel, Harrogate. I’m sure you will be just as excited as I am at seeing yet another remarkable line-up of the world’s biggest-selling authors, with our 2021 Programming Chair Ian Rankin at the helm. Ian and his Programming Committee have produced another criminally good programme, which will transport us into a world free of imposed lockdown. As ever Festival highlights span the giants of the genre whilst keeping a careful eye on ones to watch under the watchful eye of Val McDermid’s New Blood. This year we’re welcoming over 80 authors to the stage and are delighted to be welcoming back so many of our audiences from across the UK. This last year we have been kept apart, but we know the crime writing community here in Harrogate is incredibly special, and we are so pleased to be welcoming you back. I hope you’ll agree, 2021 is a poignant yet exciting year for us to host our 18th Festival. Enjoy seeing new and old faces, and of course relish the social side of the event at the bar - with a pint of Theakstons in hand of course! Simon Theakston | Executive Director T&R Theakson
2021 |
Welcome Back To Harrogate
The Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival has been much missed in our festivals calendar over the past two years but behind the scenes we’ve been working flat out to produce a safe and enjoyable event. Those twin aims have driven all our preparations. In an ever-changing environment, everything has been designed to keep people secure while delivering the same fabulous festival experience that you’re used to. For 2021, we’ll be cautious but convivial, prudent but pleasurable, guarded yet garrulous. To those ends, the site at the Old Swan will look a little different as we’ve moved things around a little to make it as safe as we can. Some regulations may change between pressing print on our brochure and actual delivery on site, but we’ll do our utmost to keep you up to date with any adjustments and to make the event as exciting and fantastic as you’ve come to know it. The road to being back at the Old Swan this summer has been long and twisting. We’ve been busy – from the creation of HIF Player where you could watch and listen to a host of podcasts dating back to our very first Theakston Crime events in 2003 right up to new book launches month by month, to a host of small pop-up live events. We’ve been worried too. We’re an arts charity and although it might look as though everything is glitz and glam with generous sponsors and full houses, but this fun and frantic weekend in July is only a part of what we do. The investment goes back into the community delivering arts events across the north as well as investing in the festival itself year on year. There’s been a devastating number of casualties over the last two years from great festivals that won’t come to life again, to long-serving suppliers like our Papakata tent partners who we have worked with for years. We’ve also had to lose some amazing staff and we’re missing some key suppliers, whilst the guidance to create an event is clearly hidden in the mysteries of a great crime novel. With these challenges, we know we’re lucky to hold a festival at the Old Swan Hotel this summer. Beyond all of that, we have missed you all. Thank you for coming back to Harrogate, supporting us as an author on stage or buying a ticket to be here. With a fantastic line-up of crime writers, excellent chat in the bars, our 2021 Festival is definitely worth raising a glass of Old Peculier to. Thanks to Simon Theakston and his team for their enduring support, the amazing Programming Committee chaired by Ian Rankin, the generosity of sponsors and supporters, and the incredibly indefatigable HIF Team who consistently go above and beyond. Have a great weekend, Sharon Canavar | Chief Executive

Your 2021 Festival
What can I expect?
Whilst there is a proposed ‘terminus’ date of the 19th July, the reality is there is no guidance for events after this date, so along with other festivals we are working in the dark. The health and safety of all our staff and visitors is paramount and whilst the current restrictions are forecast to be lifted by the time we take place, we are implementing a range of measures to ensure that our audiences feel safe whilst they are with us.
These measures include:
• • • • • • •
Moving from our traditional stage in the Ballroom of the Old Swan Hotel to a large auditorium tent located at the back of the hotel Capping the numbers on site to ensure safety including introducing a Site Ticket to manage numbers, and potential distancing for all those at the Old Swan Hotel Adapting the festival to use as much outdoor space as possible Sanitiser points, track and trace and managing the flow of people across the site Reducing the capacity of all our spaces Extra staffing to assist with numbers and potential pinch points Tickets are non-transferable and cannot be passed to anyone else
What else do I need to know?
The details below refer to where we are now within Step 3 of the Guidance. Things may change in the coming weeks, but these are the elements that are likely be in place on site at the festival: • • • • • • • •
You must not travel to or attend the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival if you are experiencing any Covid-19 symptoms including loss or change in sense of smell or taste, a temperature or a new persistent cough. You must not travel to or attend the festival if you have been told to isolate. You must have pre-booked a ticket to attend the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, these are going on sale at different stages in the run up to the event. Please keep an eye on our socials and website for further details, as this guidance may change in the days leading up to the festival delivery When you arrive, please be aware that social distancing and safety measures may be in operation in line with the current national guidelines. Please follow all the advice on site and listen to staff instructions. Based on the guidelines at the time, there may be spaces where you have to wear a mask for the duration or whilst you are walking around the site. We will be led by regulations in place at the time. Medical exemptions will apply. The site may look and feel a little different this year and in the event of inclement weather it may be wise to consider clothes to cover both outdoor wet weather for some areas of the bars as well as to cover the potential for fabulous sunshine including sunscreen. Please be patient when dealing with staff or if there is a delay at any point in gaining access or leaving the auditorium. It may take longer than normal to get your drinks or to gain access to certain spaces to allow for safety precautions. Remember we’re all working together to have a great event! You may need to observe social distancing and avoid close contact with people outside your bubble, please be mindful of this if certain precautions remain in place as part of the government guidance. If you have booked a ticket, you will be updated with the most up to date and relevant information for the festival, and in the meantime please keep an eye on web and socials.
Thank you to you all for your understanding and here’s to a great and safe festival this year!

Special Guest: Mick Herron £16
For far too long, Mick Herron was crime fiction’s best kept secret. His outstanding novels won prizes and the envy of his peers but didn’t reach the wider audience his books undoubtedly deserved. The Slough House series - charged with wit, satire and insight - changed that forever. The tales of the slow horses led by the inimitable Jackson Lamb have rocketed Herron into a different league. Readers have rightly taken the dodgy denizens of Slough House to their hearts and the forthcoming TV series based on the books, and starring Oscar-winner Gary Oldman, is sure to earn Herron an even-greater legion of fans.
Mick Herron will be interviewed by crime writer N.J. Cooper.
